Really enjoyed your video. I agree with you all the way. I drive a 1977 Triumph 2000TC with overdrive and she too is a joy to drive! Thank you for sharing such a cool 2500S!

I’m a Coventry kid born just down the road from where this beautiful car was built.I have yet to meet anyone who has nothing but praise for this gorgeous model.This should have been the British 5 series beemer.

My dad had two big Triumph estate’s thru the 70’s; the first a 1970 2000 then a 1975 2500s... These cars gave his family a massive 28 days of summer camping holiday’s all over the U.K. for 10 years ( me 6yo thru 16yo)... You can only imagine the Nostalgia these cars evoke.... The cars always seemed stylish and when I first laid my eyes on a “Stag” ( at probably 10yo).. I knew I wanted one... Just bought my baby at 48yo; me now being 54yo and 29000 genuine mile on the clock.. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ and BOY ... what a nostalgia laden classic 😘

Thank you so much for posting this. The S was a lovely car. When they were new I only ever seemed to see S estates. The saloon looked (in my opinion) absolutely fantastic - the pinnacle of that basic body shape that goes way back.

I had a 1971 2.5 PI, you couldn't rush the gear box but what a beautiful car to drive. Thanks for the memories.

That takes me back!... I had two Triumph 2000's, and three 2.5 PI's. The last PI was a stunner... it should have been a "Keeper", but new children quickly soak up funds! When the end of the Triumphs came, I moved to BMW 3 Series. There is a marked degree of similarity between the Triumphs and the BMWs, so it was a logical move. ** 1978 320 (carburetted). ** 1986 320i... I only had it a couple of weeks, when the dealer traded my "Most wanted", so I did a swap. My "Most wanted" was a: ** 1986 325i. Loved it, and kept it for many years. ** 2000 328i. ** 2012 335D Touring. Three litre twin turbo diesel. Massive torque, blisteringly fast open road express, it was amazingly frugal on fuel. ** 2017 330e. 2 litre turboed plug-in hybrid. Lovely car... all our local motoring was electric only, using free electricity from our energy plan. Out intro to electric, which resulted in: ** 2023 Kia Niro EV. Don't laugh... I cannot believe how good this thing is! The fit and finish is flawless, our "fuel" bill for 1 year / 10,000 km was NZ$76! And... I look forward to driving it! SORRY, IT LOOKS LIKE I GOT CARRIED AWAY HERE... BUT I DID LOVE THE TRIUMPHS, AND THEY STARTED THE WHOLE ROMANCE! 🥰 👍 OK, Back to reality!🥴 😜

I had one of the last delivery 2500S in Australia.. The independent rear suspension with sliding splines on the rear axles were fun. Accelerating hard out of a corner or bend and the rear would squat down and the splines lock. As you changed gear the rear end would give a David Campese skip as the rear geometry adjusted and it would speed away. Brilliant car to drive.

I am 72 and had a Triumph 2500 PI (petrol injection). Like most of the British cars that I have owned it was 95% great but the 5% made it hard to own. The rear suspension virtually collapsed and I use to keep spare injectors in the glovebox. It was a beautiful looking car and was very fast with great handling and very comfortable. I didn’t keep it for long as the faults really spoilt it. I have also had a number of British motorcycles with which I had similar experiences.

You may be the only person that refers to the car as a Twenty-five Hundred. Until now, I only ever heard it said as Two-thousand Five-hundred, including when they were still being built.

I have driven with my Triumph 2500 TC from 1976, newly bought, now more than 280.000 km. (also with a big caravan behind the car) and I still love to drive with this fine car, only not anymore at a daily basis.

It's a proper Triumph. Designed and developed by those (Michellotti, Webster) who knew what they were doing. Even BL couldn't screw that up.

I really liked the non glossy finish on the woodwork on those Triumphs.Most cars with wood features nowadays are super shiney and look like polished plastic.

Hi. I had a ‘71 2.5 PI. British racing green with red velour seats and carpets. It was such a fast car, wheel spinning in second gear was easy. But the trouble was, I couldn’t get more than about 18-20 mpg out of it. And 5 star fuel aswell. But I did love that motor.

I bought a 2500 with carburetors since local fuel injection was replaced by previous owner fir 250 euro about year 1998 in Sweden it was an amazing car but was too poor to fix the bearing problem on one of the wheels on that car but I drove it unregistered to the local shop many times just an amazing car nice engine sound gearbox and comfort seats best car ever:)

My father drove a couple of 2.5PI's he kept his last one until about 1980 when it just needed constant work on it. Mum had a couple 2000's before going over to Rovers in the late 70's. Remember driving down to London in 1975 doing about 110mph (shock-horror back then motorways less heavily policed) I was looking out the back window watching a car flying up behind us, dad somewhat confused moved into middle lane & a Lamborghini countach flew past with a flash of his lights & "thankyou" wave. Just when you think your in a quick car eh.

This brought back pleasant memories of the Chicane 2500TC automatic I owned in the 80s. Despite poor build quality, it was always very pleasant to drive (loved that long-stroke straight six exhaust note) and was, dare I say it, a lot more reliable and cheaper to run than the BMW E39 I owned in more recent times. I wouldn't mind another 2500 if I could find a decent one (unlikely in SA now) - very pleasant and usable classic for everyday use.

That is good to hear! Imagine if British Leyland had of built them better. How’s things might have gone. True it’s getting harder to find clean 2500s. Prices have gone up a fair bit as well. I still want to own one someday. The one I drove at the auction will be the benchmark! Thanks for watching👍

The South African cars, like the Australian and New Zealand cars were CKD's or complete knock downs delivered in crates and pallets to be locally assembled.

My dad had a 2000 but the best one they made wasn’t the 2.5 but the one they never sold in Europe. The v8(not stag engine but small block rover) 3500. Now THAT was badass

brought mine in 84, green no sun roof, £650, was great to drive lasted 4 years before the dreaded rust start to claim to much of the chassis. still miss it.

Revisiting this clip... My 2500S manual o/d was a fantastic car... roomy, fast, very long legs and comfoirtable when touring... Would I have another? You bet!

I remember a car Identical colour to that on my paper round back in the late 70's in Allesley Village Coventry.. My first car was herald 13/60 and I had 1300 TC both 1968 but over the years I had a couple of 2.5 TC and PI 1973 and 1974. I had spitfires to 3 in total 1300cc and 1500 cc plus I had dolomites 18/50 and a sprint with webasto roof and last I had TR7 too convertible.. All these cars I bought for hardly anything..erm around £75 -£500. I wish id hung on to them..

Love it , I had the Pi and a 2000, pi was best drive I’ve ever experienced , up there with my BM. It was weird how I got it and had inspired me to try write a book

I remember a neighbour here in Australia had an Australian assembled fiery yellow example with Borg Warner automatic he bought for his son as his first car, in the 1980s and remember the crisp exhaust. The last examples of this body shell were very handsome cars indeed front and back and I even had a large plastic toy police car based on this very car as a child. DID YOU KNOW Australia built their last ones in 1978, a year after Great Britain ended production on theirs?

Its always interesting how overseas markets still get a certain model long after they've been discontinued in the home market. Are there many left running around Australia these days?

Take to the Road certainly not. I did come across one parked in the street not too long ago and spoke to the owner, who was a young English lad about 30. He opened the bonnet for me and it was a 1977 build by Leyland Australia. The interior was abit tatty inside but the exterior was presentable but not without blemishes. It was a semi daily driver and he said it had been reliable and used on the motorway a lot without trouble, though it revved a fair bit with the three speed auto. You will find this excerpt I found in Wikipedia of interest. "In New Zealand, CKD production of the Triumph 2000 continued at New Zealand Motor Corporation's Nelson plant, with 2500S models until March 1979. Sir Rob Muldoon, New Zealand's then Prime Minister, privately owned a white 2500S and had been known to drive to work in it. This car is now owned by a member of the Auckland Triumph Car Club. The 2000 was assembled in Australia by Australian Motor Industries.[16] A special version was known as the 2000MD ("Managing Director"), which had special features such as knock-off wire wheels, triple Stromberg carburettors, and the battery moved to the boot.[16] Total production of the 2000MD was approximately 100".

I had a Daimler V8 250 with a 3 speed auto as well. It really needed an extra gear on the open road. So I imagine the Triumph would have been very similar. I would like one some time though.

For me it depends on the car. In an ideal world I'd have a manual and an auto version of the same car. Something I would have liked with my Daimler. Mine was an auto but would have loved to see what it was like with a manual.

@@timwingham8952 yes it was an S with overdrive ,it was absolutely mint garaged I bought it in about 1995 it ate fuel but was great to drive and bags if power unfortunately the prop shaft snapped ,I had it welded up but it was never the same ,I sold it for 3 times what I'd paid a year later even with the prop being Dodgy,👍

Brilliant & FANTASTIC CARS. The Car Every car maker wanted to make or DESTROY. NOTHING Was Better Until You Doubled or Trebled the Price. STILL the CAR to have today. AGELESS STAG Styling. 1000's of Stags Everywhere, BUT WHERE are the MINT 2500's ?? Much more RARE & Valuable than any STAG. 2500 'S'. vs Stag ? Wave the stag GOODBYE at the LIGHTS & on the M'Way Flat out .

There were about 2,000 Stags imported into Australia. I think about 1500 are still on the Stag register here. There were about 20,000 Sedans assembled here and only a few hundred or so left. There were about 29,000 assembled in N.Z. What happened to them all?

Brings back memories, I had an ex police Delft Blue one like that on which I fitted a 2nd hand Webasto. Shame the wheels are wrong. The 2500S had the same alloy wheels as the Triumph Stag, much nicer. Unusual that the clutch is light. I had numerous Triumph 2000s and 2500s in the 1980s, all £100 or under and the one common theme was heavy clutches!

We're they Mk.1 models . They had a 1" bore clutch slave cylinder . The Mk2 model slave cylinders were 7/8" bore .hence the clutch pedal was lighter , very noticeable.

in 1986 i bought one of them for 50 pounds !!!!!!!!!! it had no mot , i took it for the test and it passed first time lol. i owened it for 5 years and it never let me down . now i regret ever getting rid of it :( .

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I prefer the 2500 to the Stag. I've owned both. The Stag is too fragile, shouty, wobbly and cramped. The 2500 is refined, smooth and feels more modern.

No this one was sold at auction Dan. I was lucky to get the chance to drive it for a few hours before it sold. Yup I would agree its a great cruiser.

Nearly original, but the original five-star mags were even nicer than the Minilites. Weak point was always the clutch plate/pressure plate, and the infamous Triumph 'lurch' when the outer rear wheel bearings failed.

Wasn't the Triumph 2000 introduced in late 1963 at the same time as the Rover 2000. I think the 2500 with petrol injection engine appeared about 1968 that was not very reliable. Then the car was facelifted in late 1969 to be the Mk2, and the unreliable 2500PI replaced with twin carb (2500TC) engine about 1972, and finally the 2500S built for two years from 1975 to 77. The 2500s have different wheel trims to the 2000s, not sure about the 2500TC, but the 2500S wheel trims appear to be identical to the Stag.

Yes they both came out the same year. The Lucas fuel injection was a major headache which was why they swapped back to carbs. A pity really as if the Lucas system had worked it could have helped Triumph with more sales. Wheel trims I'm not sure really. I've seen a few different styles on different cars.

@@TaketotheRoad The Lucas injection unit tempted drivers to use the performance, but it wasn't really designed for high revs. If the engine was never taken to the beginning of the red line on the rev counter the injection unit was reliable enough.

Interesting info there James. Hadn’t heard that before. I have read of course that Triumph had problems with the reliability and had to drop the spec and go back to carbs. I guess the early Lucas injection couldn’t match twin carbs for performance.

@@TaketotheRoad I bought my PI from a garage mechanic, and it was he who told me to avoid the red line and why. In fact he had replaced the standard rotor arm with a rev limiting one and when I drove it hard the engine wouldn't go more than 4000 rpm. I changed it back to the standard rotor arm and watch the rev counter instead because I don't like cars that decide for me what I should do. For performance the Lucas Injection was better than the twin carbs. It just didn't cope with the engine being thrashed, hence the reliability issue. A friend of mine has a MK1 PI Estate automatic many years ago (mid 1970s) and for an estate it really shifted, and he thrashed it because it was fun. He realised that all was not well when it started with frost on the windscreen with no choke and it gave him 7MPG. In those days there was a local to him Lucas repair centre, so he unbolted the injection unit, took it along and asked them to fix it. 3 days later he got it back and fitted it on the car, and the performance was better than it had been since he had owned the car, and it gave him a bit more than 30MPG. He later sold it on to a friend of his, who had heard that the injection system was unreliable, and he converted it to the twin carb spec. It still went well, but was noticeably more docile than it had been with the injection unit refurbished.

hmm ' i would not expect it to handle well' you might do well to read about the car before 'reviewing' it. The triumph 2500 was campaigned as a rally car and had success. It also competed on tarmac to a lesser extent.

Interesting video but why such long pauses between a few words? Most reviewers try to seem like they're having a conversation with you. I'm just wondering if this is all one take stuff?

+LAZAROS ANTONIADIS Thanks! Yeah it's a pity they disappeared when the Rover brand took over. A lot of motoring heritage was lost when Triumph was no longer used.

I think it was because they were intense rivals. Triumph choose to develop their own V8 for the Stag by grafting two Dolomite fours together, than make use of the proven V8 from the Rover division. We all know how that went. Brilliant sound tough. Many owners fitted Rover V8s later on.

Yup it went very well indeed!😕I've seen a few Stags with the original Triumph V8, pretty rare these days. Actually prefer them with the Triumph lump.

Something about the water jacket not allowing proper flow of coolant into all the galleries. It can be corrected. Best V8 note ever. It would be fun to see one put into a 2000 sedan.

Triumph had already pumped millions of pounds into developing their V8 before the merger with Rover and British Leyland. That's why they used there own engine as apposed to chucking millions away.

I'm not sure the TR7 was any more advanced mechanically, it may have looked a little more modern, the only 'slightly' more modern thing about the TR7 was the 2 litre 4cylinder OHC engine from the Dolomite sprint but with an 8 valve head instead of 16 valve.

My family had 2 x PI saloons, 1x PI estate and 1x 2500S when they were current. In my view the 2500S was made of far poorer quality steel than the earlier PI's. It rusted as badly as the later Maestro's while the PI's never needed any welding in the same time span. The first PI, a 1971 model my dad had, did not have tinted glass, power steering or inertia reel seat belts. The later ones had all this but did not have the cloth seats of the 2500S. Also the PI was a lot lot faster and more fuel efficient. The 2500S is not a bad drive if you get a good one, but compared to a good PI there is no comparison.

It sold well at the auction alright and demand for the big Triumph saloons here in the UK is strong. Prices have been climbing gradually for a few years now.

Ha ha 506BHP? BL would have been doing well to get that back then. They were rated around 130BHP which actually wasn't too bad for a family saloon of that era.

They Are "A DREAM to Drive " & Ride in. & Were Very Fast Back in the Day. Actually Far BETTER than a JAGUAR XJ6 at the time. 2500's were a CAR ! XJ6's were a BADGE ! Even today I would Gladly Have a 2500 'S' . 1977/8 . ONE OF THE BEST CARS IN THE WORLD !! I said ONE OF ' !! & not about Price. JUST LOOKS & RIDE & THAT FANTASTIC ENGINE. The Engine is as Smooth as the ride. The Next Best thing to Impress me in that Bracket, Rover 827. & BMW e34 525. Forget any other car Similar. Smaller is the Dolly SPRINT, & e30 BMW 320/ 325. Anything Bigger ? ORIGINAL RANGE ROVER. Anything Newer / Smaller = MAZDA MX5, Anything more expensive is a waste of money until you are spending THREE TIMES THE PRICE of an MX5. Merc SL 107, BMW e30 6 cyl Conv'. is better in SOME ways. / Personal preference applies. Merc= MAJESTIC & CLASS. BMW, = The Best of ALL & Every World, Performance AND PINSHARP HANDLING. MX5 = OUTRIGHT FUN & CHEAP As " CHIPS " to buy & RUN, ZERO DOWNSIDE to an MX5 . It will THRILL YOUR PANTS OFF. THE BEST £ GRAND YOU WILL EVER SPEND !!

You know I would agree with you there. Except for the refinement or lack of it in the cabin (everything is going to shake above 60mph). But that's old cars for you. Apart from that it is great. Really want to own one now!

Great car slow gear change clutch quite troublesome heavy pedal this one sounds like the exception exhaust rattles as it goes through rear cross member brakes fad quickly if driven hard

I was driving on a private road with a speed limit. And with the car going to auction hours after my filming it wasn’t really a good idea to go blasting around.

The steering is light? Interesting. I assume that is without assistance. It is a pity that Triumph did not persevere with their "petrol injection" technology. As I understand it, its problems came down to poor maintenance by owners. Yes in the 1970s, the cars were exciting, and good. The unions had come under the influence of socialists, and were bad. When has socialism ever improved anything? My secret is that I actually prefer the Mk 1 versions.

Not really as original as you say. Obvious respray (good) which as fellow panelbeaters used to say is the hider of all sins. No car from the 70s that's looks that good hasn't been restored.

@@TaketotheRoad God the rusty tin mob are sensitive. I was pointing out to the gullible buyers of old cars that buying them resprayed is the best way of buying rust. A mini with underseal is an example of when to look for tech screws and pop rivets. Take a fridge magnet with you and find how much bog is in it.

Rose tinted glasses. I owned Triumphs in the 70s/80s. As did friends. Total poo. No wonder the Triumph brand was trashed. It makes me sad, but unreliable, under developed rust buckets.

Not everyone loves Triumphs and plenty remember the bad old days. Obviously my review was based on driving it for a couple of hours, which is very different to living with one everyday. But the first impressions were good. The thing is the expertise is there now to solve most of the problems that plagued a lot of British Leyland cars. Not all of course but enough to make a 2500S like that one feel like a nice car.
