We had one at work which was used to produce our own marketing videos. I took it to air shows as well which was great; people assume you're from the 'TV News' and they just get out of your way !!! Doesn't take long to get to the front if you're carrying a Betacam LOL !

Love the footage... I have a Sony J-30 SDI beta deck and lots of digital beta tapes I want to transfer. I heard the best way is through SDI but no one seems to know what converter or capture card to use. Of course want to not compress the video. Everyone tells me I have to use USB 3 or other software capture cards that seem seem like they don't work well "fickle" and people's reviews aren't getting good results. Thanks@@!!

Try a Blackmagic DeckLink Mini Recorder...SDI and HDMI inputs and can capture 8-bit and 10-bit uncompressed AVI and M-JPEG at the proper raster for DigiBeta.

You want to use a Blackmagic or AJA capture device because of the software they come with, cheaper SDI to USB3.0 options can work, but they don't offer 10-bit or capture software and the software they're compatible doesn't understand interlaced video.

@@cbehr91 that does the trick for me at least. Quality will then only depend on your processing on the PC. Firewire will most likely apply DV compression to the signal which would be a shame to do to DigiBeta recordings.

the thing holding this back is the lens.

somehow we shoot serials on DB at the very beginning of 2000-s, then switched to XDcam. That samples reminds me my Lenovo P70 mobilephone)

I am desperately trying to get a PCI-E adapter for my laptop so I can use it as a portable video recorder for ingesting component analog video directly from my Sony BVP-E30WS video camera, which is the system camera and ENG/EFP analog to the DVW-970, in my opinion. I have an AJA Kona 3 capture card that can upconvert the analog/digital component video signal (I am not sure how it's encodedd directly out from the 26-pin multicore cable connector, but I believe the Y bandwidth is 10 MHz, whereas the B-Y and R-Y bandwidths are both at least 4.5 MHz, or as much as 5 MHz). I want to use the capture card to sample at 13.5 MHz for the luminance channel, and 6.75 MHz for each of the chrominance channels, and a 10-bit quantized, 4:2:2 ouput, uncompressed. The bit rate is over 200 Mbps and an hour of footage would take about 90 GB an hour; since RU-vid has a 100 GB limit to upload, and this would be the highest quality source material I can possibly get from such a camera, would it look the best of any SD/ED material online, including your own footage? Also, is that really a composite source signal, because it looks truly amazing if so!?

Digital betacam records component video with 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 compression. The bitrate is 90 Mbit/s. Why do you feel that you need to sample at such a high bitrate? I think sampling it that high the quality would be unperceivable. Do you have an SDI output option on that E30WS?

The camera adapter attached/docked to the video camera is a CA-570, which has a 26-pin connector that multicore cables connect to, and there is a triax BNC connector as well. The camera head is digital, but I don't know if the camera adapter keeps it digital or outputs in analog over the multicore cable connector. The triax connector, I'm guessing, outputs in digital. I wanted the highest possible level of quality, so I figured that this is the only way. I am planning on starting a business in the future that aims to professionally shoot all video in either uncompressed 4:4:4 RGB (linear) or at least 4:2:2 YCbCr (linear), 10-bit (or better) output, so I figured uncompressed SD (486/59.94i) or ED (486/29.97PsF) would be the best place to start off with, especially considering how it's all I could afford right now.

I'll have to drop an SDI board into the DVW-970 and show you the difference.

@@NUCLEARARMAMENT Hi, Sony ca-570/p doesn't have SDI output, but Sony ca-950/p (optical fiber camera adaptor) have SDI output and ther you have best image quality of your BVP-E30/p...

Nice Video. But if you transfer it from your J3 Player per firewire directly to your PC, it will be much better
@eastkingstonnh

Or better yet, SDI, but my 3 only has composite out.

Oh OK... I thought firewire was standard at the j3.

Wish it were. I think I have SDI on one of my cameras, just too lazy to break one out.

J30 has Firewire and SDI as standard. The J3 can have SDI as an option (one of my two J3 machines has SDI).

those cameras are absolutely marvellous pieces of equipment. But you can’t deny the fact that technological advancements have not been nice to them. I really do not like the pictures I am seeing here, the resolution, even converted, is awful. Colors are overly saturated and contrast is way too high. I owned a pdw-700 myself, and with lens and accessories included paid more than €50,000 for it. Nowadays with Magic Lantern installed in my Canon DSLR I have even higher resolutions, bit rate and dynamic contrast. for €3000. And The Bokeh is Included For Free. It is a shame though that those machines went into oblivion so fast. They were certainly much more ergonomically designed. The Extra Weight Made Your Shots on Shoulder Very Stable, And You Looked Really Macho 😀 Nowadays With Some of Those Rigs You See Cameraman With Their Neck Muscles and a Cramp All The Time.

You'll be saying the same thing about your Canon in ten years, things are moving very quickly. How about the 8k Ikegami? I'll pass on that, I regularly use an A7s and a Panny DVX200 and recently, the Sony PXW-X400 which is nicely balanced for ENG shooting. For fun, I collect and fire up the old SD dinosaurs.

I'm still waiting to see the 4:2:2 720x486 10-bit output on this bad boy, this is just composite (CVBS) output upscaled to HD!
