I have to give credit to those actors in opening scene in Jakarta they did an excellent job and the scene was so chilling and terrifying that you could feel the hopelessness when she was explaining to the official that there was no medicine or vaccine and that they had to bomb the city.

I like that Joel respected Tess’s wishes by leaving her. Rather than arguing. It shows that those two characters had so much respect for each other. I think it also shows they know when to leave emotions out of it to think rationally and when it’s safe to feel those emotions. Beautiful

Now that we’re on to the second episode: My wife is an ER nurse and while watching that first episode (she hates medical shit in shows) she said Sarah’s gun shot wound and subsequent death was one of the most accurate depictions she’s seen. And that’s coming from someone who deal with GSWs on a daily basis and has coded multiple children. That just speaks to how the writers and directors do such a good job.

Wow that's so awesome to do! I just had a call with my bf a few hours ago (around the time you probably made your comment haha) about how we hate when people don't do their research and how much better things are when showrunners consult experts in their field, like in those video critiquing historical accuracy in history dramas and blacksmiths reacting to blacksmith scenes etc cause sometimes portraying something inaccurately completely breaks the immersion for someone who knows their shit. It's just great to see people do their research instead of thinking "we're a rich popular corporation, everyone will love us regardless and no one will notice".

I was a paramedic years ago and yea her death was pretty realistic. Children can compensate for blood loss like adults, but with adults there's this slow decline as we lose too much blood. For kids its more like a cliff. They can compensate for only so long and then they just fall off quickly. If they had IV fluids and there was a hospital right around the corner maybe she could have been saved but obviously in that situation there's not much you can do.

Tess couldn't light the lighter because the psychotropic effect of the infection was already taking hold of her brain and trying to prevent her from killing the other runners. It was also the psychotropic effects of the infection that caused her to be accepting of the mycelial kiss from the other stalker. You could see the fear in Tess' eyes as her body refused to act because the infection was taking hold.

according to the writers, the ending is not a kiss. they responded saying that the fungus is actually not violent and has no evolutionary reason to be, infected are violent only when attacked. Tess has no reason to fight back or escape, so the infected had no reason to be violent. they don't bite to eat, they bite to spread their fungus from their mouth through our bodies. it wasn't a kiss, it was simply the proper natural way to infect, or in fact, speed the process of infection and connect her to the hive mind.

The part with Tess being "kissed" - it wasn't that she was allowing it. It was showing that the fungi was taking over and she was loosing control of her body and becoming a puppet to the fungi. They had to bite her again because of the spore removal from the show. In the game Joel realizes for sure only when they have to flee into the spore infested metro and Ellie is able to breath there without a mask. Tess does not die in an explosion in the game. In the game you can hear how she gets gunned down by FEDRA and you see her on the floor from the upper level and you have to fight or sneak your way through the rest of the capitol building.

I like the creators’ explanation though. They said a fungi-infected host would not naturally be violent unless it was being attacked or resisted. Since Tess just stood there, it had no need to be violent. Plus, this was a concept that was considered for the game originally.
@ShadowPhoenix82
@ShadowPhoenix82 Год назад
I don't think there were that many layers to the "kiss". There was no reason for it NOT to go for her face while standing, and she already has an open hole level with the fungal tendrils. They all recognized she was infected, but she was just being added immediately to the collective.

They've already chosen to make the characters more hostile in general and to each other. Joel through episodes one and two has yet to do one likeable thing. Ellie is hostile like an older criminal teenager and not like a spunky younger teenager. It's an interesting show but they have a lot of work to do. Spoiler: Ellie was bonded to the firelies in the game but is just hostile and unknown to them now.

Tess' death was even better here than in the game. In the game, it's soldiers, not infected, chasing you, and Tess is killed off-camera. You just hear the gunshots, then loop around upstairs so you look down and see her dead body in the atrium. The showrunners said the reason the spores travel mouth-to-mouth instead of through the air, like in the game, is that they didn't want all the actors dressed like Bane the entire series.

To people spreading misinformation about the nature of the infection. This people have posted that the infected won’t attack you unless resisted or attacked is 100% lie. In the game I was attacked multiple times by Stalkers and Runners Ellie and I did not know were around us. Ellie on one side of the room reading a joke but and me in the other reading a letter from the Firefiles and I look up and runners ate attacking us. Unless reading is viewed as aggressive behavior by the infection, why would they attack us? I have been attacked every time I be been around one. Ok but that’s in the game. Then explain why in the show Sara was attacked by her elderly neighbor??? Or why Joel being very nonaggressive carrying Sara and is immediately attacked on sight and chase without him resisting or attacking in anyway. He literally looked at the thing and it chased after him. It isn’t the Predator it’s not checking to see if you have weapons. I don’t know what quote Show writer you are referring to but that’s not the lore of the game and clearly it’s the same on the show. The only reason they didn’t rip Tess apart was because she was already infected but if you believe they won’t attack unless provoked or attacked. You lack the ability to reason.

I know it's nasty, but I think there's something to be said for the inherent erotic nature of the kiss scene. Something that I really like about the show is that change in how the infected function. Spores make sense for the game, this weird sorta hive mind makes sense for the show. When we consider that framework, of the infected being functional extensions of a larger whole, the infected, in a sense, become much less alien, we can somewhat glean their motivations. It's like the infected have bought into the biggest cult ever, and just want everyone else to join it. So when this single entity spots tess, alone in a corner, we have this expectation that it'll, in tess's words "rip her to shreds." The fact that it doesn't, that it instead takes her into this horrifying but nonetheless affectionate embrace, is at once horrifying, disarming, and in some sense sensual. It is the recognition of the other in a nonviolent capacity. It's the same kind of erotic tension that we see with vampires. The bite of a vampire and the bite of a zombie are both horrifying and revolting in similar ways, but are also perversions of intimacy, a metaphorical kiss of death. In a way it challenges us to examine the acceptable boundaries of intimacy and our relationship with othe beings. All of this to say: the last of us is a fundamentally queer story, and no one can convince me otherwise.
