Marlene said in the first episode. The other Fireflies were going to kill Ellie, Marlene stopped them. Not because she really knew for sure that Ellie was immune, but because she knew who she was (she'd probably been keeping an eye on her even though she grew up in the Fedra school), and she's more level headed and realized that it was peculiar that one kid had turned (and been killed), but the other hadn't. So they took her, but put her in chains and under observation. They couldn't be sure she wouldn't turn eventually, perhaps it was just delayed... but decided, no, apparently not, after a few weeks.

About the other dead corpse snacks, my interpretation is that part of sending the groups out to scavange included obtaining "long pig" if nothing else could be found. So Joel and Ellie would have been hanging up there had they killed them instead of escaping. So the other corpses were just others they had killed out in the world not part of the group.

FUN FACT: David's right-hand man, James is played by Troy Baker, the original Joel from the video game. So, you could say in this iteration, Ellie killed Joel. :)

Funny fact here: The guy Joel knifes in the basement is also the director of thos episode and the finale. As for where Ellie put the penicillin, as long as it went into the stomach muscle, it was okay to put it in Joel's gut.

I think the four people last episode going out ‘looking for supplies’ were in on the cannibalism, and the others who were in the meat locker were either travellers they hunted or other members of the tribe who died by natural causes. I don’t think they had started deliberately killing their own yet.
@cullenarthur8879

I have heard people say that they thought those four guys were on a hunting expedition for other people when they ran into Joel and Ellie, which is why they attacked them. I'm not sure about that. Why would they not have any guns with them if they were hunting people? We know this group of people had guns because they were shown with guns when they were looking for Joel and Ellie. Why wouldn't a group of four people hunting for people have them? I think it's more likely they were doing just what David told Ellie they were doing, scavaging.

Ellie really excels in her acting in this episode and my heart just leaps every time Joel calls her baby girl for the first time... and yes why did no one else from the community come to see what was going on with the fire... looking forward to sharing the end with you.. do love your reactions

You *will* find out in the final episode exactly why Ellie wasn’t killed on sight. In the game, Marlene and Ellie had a *slightly* more cohesive relationship. Not close by any stretch, but they knew each other prior to Ellie getting bitten. Also, the exact details of Ellie killing Riley are left to the imagination in the games.
@IDEALFRY
@IDEALFRY 9 месяцев назад
if you watched the 1st episode more carefully, the infection flyer tells u that the people who got bitten on the leg would take the longest to turn which is around 12-15 hours, we can reference that to how long it took for Sam to turn as he was bite on the leg. Also, Ellie was found the next day but not in the daytime as the resistance would never risk being caught moving around during the day, which means by the time the firefly found Ellie would have been way past the time span of even the longest lasting period for anyone who has been infected on record. That reason alone would have made Ellie become someone very special in most people's eyes, not to mention the resistance leader Marlene also has a history with Ellie, those two obvious reasons alone were enough to save Ellie's life.
@Martyntd5
@Martyntd5 9 месяцев назад
Firstly, remember Marlene knows Ellie. When the fireflies turned up at the mall, they found a mature, dead infected, a newly turned and dead Riley and an alive, unturned and bitten Ellie. Marlene r4ecognised Ellie should have turned by then and stopped the fireflies from killing her (she said this to Ellie in Ep 1). Marlene had an emotional connection to Ellie, she was puzzled that she hadn't turned yet and maybe ...she had another reason for suspecting Ellie might be immune? So they chained her up and waited to see what would happen.
@RinaIosad
@RinaIosad 9 месяцев назад
I don't think there was any strategy to David's words about Ellie as his equal, at least not along the lines of her being immune and also good with guns/having hunting skills or something like that. To me it comes across more like a typical grooming/predatory behaviour, just a variation of 'you're not like other girls' or 'you're really mature for your age'. Re: bodies and people disappearing from the group - the other bodies are probably travellers like Joel and Ellie, just without the plot armor.
@kennycooper294
@kennycooper294 9 месяцев назад
the diner is a level in the game, you have to sneak around avoiding david until you can get attacks on him with the knife. david was a child predator he didnt want her as a partner he was just telling her what he needed to get her to join. people always jump to "they ate the dad" but once you see other bodies you kinda know a body has to be prepped to eat and stored so her dad probably is not in line to be eaten yet. the season ends with the conclusion of the first video game.
@Martyntd5
@Martyntd5 9 месяцев назад
Did they know there would be a season 2? They knew it would be a possibility, but it doesn't plug into this. The plot is following the game very closely and they didn't know there would be a second game when they ended the first ...in fact there was a 7 year time gap between the first and second game and the second was only developed because there was such a demand for it following the success of the first. So the game concludes as a self contained story and the show appear to be following an identical path.

@@TahoeNevada I was talking about real life. If they had planned a sequel from the start, seven years is a long time to make people wait for it. Between 2007 and 2017 Naughty Dog released 8 Uncharted games. I'm pretty sure TLoU was planned as a stand-alone game. If they had considered a sequel in 2013, they had no idea what the story was gonna be.

@@Martyntd5 I get you now. Craig Mazin did say they were gonna split TLOU pt2 into two seasons. I think HBO officially announced it was renewed for a second season after the premiere of the first episode. Waiting impatiently for the SAG/AFTRA strike to end so production can begin.
@Martyntd5
@Martyntd5 9 месяцев назад
@@TahoeNevada I don't know how they are going to make the next season work? The first one had such a strong story it was an obvious candidate for a TV adaptation, but the second game is so very different. Also, Bella Ramsey (now 20 years old) looks exactly the same. That's gonna be a difficult sell in the context of the second game. I'm gonna predict the second season will be a huge departure from the second game. Also everyone loved the first game, not everyone loved the second. Unlike a video game where you pay your money and then you've got what you've got so might as well play it through, there is no such captive audience for a TV show. People can just tune out for the second episode if they don't like the first ...and if they stay true to the game, a lot of people are not going to like it. ND will be under a lot of pressure from HBO to give it a broader critical appeal.
@TahoeNevada
@TahoeNevada 9 месяцев назад
@Martyntd5 Craig Mazin was around the ND offices during the development of Part 2, I'm convinced part the structure of pt2 (flashbacks etc) were because of this. Flashbacks in season 1 set the tone for season 2-3. Also, need I remind you of season 1 of Game Of Thrones?

Super late to this, but as I casually scrolled through the comments I didn't see anyone talk about it, so I was compelled to address your questions/thoughts at the end. I just wanted to add a bit more depth from the gaming side. I agree that Davis was being predatory and probably telling Ellie what he thought would best sell his "nice guy" act, but there was much more to it in the game. When Ellie first shoots the elk and she's waiting with David for the medicine, the two of them are attacked by a HORDE of infected, including several of the larger ones that you saw from the episode with Kathleen in Kansas City. So all this talk about how impressive she was, seemed kind of out of place in the show. It was lore accurate for him to say those things but given we didn't see her do anything particularly impressive, I understood why you were confused by him saying so. In the game that came from a shared experience of fighting for their lives and defending each other when the chips were down. So that's at least where that was coming from. Half of it was creepy pedo crap, and half was he was genuinely impressed by her.

I don't know if I commented this after the episode with Henry and Sam, but Bella Ramses nonverbal vocalizations are just amazing acting. As far as the bodies and who they were eating I think the people Joel and Ellie ran into at the university wrought looking for people. That's why they attack them. So maybe they weren't eating the people from the group unless perhaps they died of natural causes ...

@@tananario23 just curious, when is that made clear, because, as pointed out, that would be hugely problematic if they are killing their own. People from the group who die for a reason, ok, then no questions amongst the people who don't know what's going on (remember he says only a few know), but healthy people just disappearing?. ... and the guys at the college went after Joel with pretty murderous intent.

@@HapsardI've heard people say that the guys Joel and Ellie ran into on the campus were hunting people, which is why they attacked them. I'm not sure about that. Why wouldn't they have guns if that were the case? We know this group had guns because we saw them with them when they were looking for Joel and Ellie. You would think they would give a group of four people hunting for people at least one gun. Instead, the one guy attacked Joel with a baseball bat. I think it's more likely that they were doing just what David told Ellie they were doing, scavaging.

@@Hapsard yes, he was aggressive. I think that may be because of how the world has become. You may have to assume hostile intent from strangers to be safe. Or, he could have just seen an opportunity to steal their stuff and attempted to rob them. Remember though, this is fiction, and it was probably just written that way to put Ellie in the position to have to save Joel's life, bringing them closer together. It's kind of silly to hypothesize about the motivations of fictional people.

Why didnt it seem like they were just out for supplies? Four guys armed only with baseball bats? This brings me to my thoughts on perspective. If we had been following David's group from the beginning, from Pittsburg across the country, we would view this whole sitution differently. We would be upset at the people starving. Very upset that Alec died, leaving his wife and daughter who everyone would be crying for. With his group starving, including that wife and daughter, Alec sees two people, armed with guns and riding a horse that could feed his group for a month and possibly loaded with supplies. He also doent know if they are part of a larger group who could now come and attack his group. When we hear about and see Joel killing innocent people, we brush it off as "you do what you have to do to survive in an apocalypse " or "He’s just protecting the people he cares about." Thats all the guys with bats were doing too. I dont think they were actively killing the people they were eating. I think they were just using what became available to them. Here's another thought. Not whether or not the penicillin was really penicillin, but what if Joel was really allergic to penicillin? She would have just finished him off. It wasnt so much subtext about Jesus being that gils father as it was straight up text him telling her he was her daddy now. The creepiest thing about all this, is that that pedo was a teacher before this all happened. I still dont know why David beings that cleaver down next to Elliw just because she yells out that she's infected. Either way, he was a second away from chopping her up. He should at least have taken her arm. At least that way he could have looked to see if she was infected.
@TahoeNevada

In my headcanon, David wasn’t just a pedo, but a serial killer in the before times. In the post apocalypse, he’s just living his best life with a literal flock at his disposal.

I think the reason he was so infatuated with ellie (yuck) is because she wasn't a follower. Every person he ever encountered, he was able to manipulate. Every person he encountered was immediately a subordinate. He had power over them...but in some twisted way felt responsible for them too. He felt like because he was able to manipulate them, they weren't his intellectual equal. Then here comes Ellie, who immediatly sees him for what he is, and calls him out on it. Instead of being angry or offended by this, he sees her as an intellectual equal...as someone who's not going to just swallow his lies wholecloth. Super twisted thinking.

The answer is you don't know the whole story. Have a nice day. The game is very brutal and so is the show. The nagging question you should be asking is 'What does good and bad actually mean?' Its not so easy to get from the show but its there. We have a habit of just pulling for the main characters. In actuality Joel and Elle are a couple of not so good people. The show uses this episode to show a turn in Elle that you slightly notice. The ethical question is what does good and bad, right and wrong actually mean at the end of the world?
