The Last of Us HBO Episode 3 - Angry Review 

When the trap kills the one infected, Bill says "never gets old", indicating he's been dealing with lots of infected the whole time.

Why do people think that they only got attacked once? Do we need to see every attack? I only saw them eat 2 meals, but I assume they ate more than that over 20 years.

we've only seen the men eat two meals during the span of 20 years, but wouldn't it be safe to assume Bill and Frank would have been eating throughout the years? So with that being said, I think it would also be safe to assume Bill and Frank had to deal with raiders and infected on more than one occasion.

There's better ba a 5 minutes in each episode where Joel upgrading his gun on a random convenient workbench 😆🤣

I do not think we can say there was only one raid. I think they just only showed the one raid, and how effective his defenses are. That said. Why in the f*ck does Bill stand out in the open and shoot? That was more unbelievable than fungus zombies.

I think we are purposefully not getting nonstop gunplay/violence because we are going to get that towards the end of the season. Though we see this world is brutal, we are mostly being shielded from the immediate violence by the storytelling. (We don’t see the two Firefly gun battles, for example.) This is to set up the devastating violence that will happen to lead characters later. Thus adding to their overall narrative impact.

Why such a high scores? It doesn’t add anything to the story, you could have technically skipped episode 3 altogether. The hilarious chemistry between Elly and Bill didn’t happen, it’s such a shame. A complete waste of this chapter in the game

Its implied when Bill says "it never gets old " when a runner dies from one of his traps that he regularly deals with the infected. There could also have been more raids from hunters that just isnt shown because the episode isnt really about that stuff . its about Bill and Frank.

Did you guys miss the big pile of cars stacking on eachother? I found it pretty obvious that they had being attacked more then once. What a great actor Nick Offerman is by the way

Bill and Frank’s town not being raided as much or infected not appearing as much is kind of justified because of two reasons. The town is a on the country side where there is not a lot of chance of population being around as much. It also felt like really small town by the number of people FEDRA evacuates from the region at the beginning of their story. Fedra would have cleared up the other near by towns as well so less likely that infected would be around. Humans are also less likely to find their town because the town does not have any highways passing near by it. Joel and Ellie both take a small road to get to Bill and Frank’s which does not feel like an interstate or a highway. In the game Bill lives in a more city type region so it makes more sense to have infected there and not here. It also makes sense for the game because it gives the player something to do. The second reason would be because of the time jumps. They might have had previous raids as well but showing the raids for the sake of showing it to wouldnt really work for the story they were trying to tell i think. This could also explain why Bill got so cocky and didnt take cover while shooting at the raiders. Because in the supposed previous off screen raids the protected, electrified and apparently gasolined up fence would have taken care of a majority of the raiders and infected giving Bill over confidence in his ability to stop the raiders. The point of the love story is to make audience feel that there could be love in an apocalyptic grim dark world like this as well. At the same time Joel understanding the same thing as well is important to the story. He needs to understand and realize that his failures to protect the ones he loved shouldn’t make him lose all hope and stop him from trying or atleast this story is supposed to nudge him ever so lightly toward hope and not despair. In the game (unless you go back to the place), Tess’s death was never really shown to be processed or grieved by Joel. While in the HBO series, Ellie stopping short of reading Tess’s name aloud from the letter, Joel walking out to take a breather all make Tess’s death feel much more impactful than the game. In some ways the choices made in the series elevate the story even more than an already stupefyingly fantastic game.

I didn't have an issue with the with bill being gay and showing the relationship between bill and frank. My problem is how they openly promoted suicide as a good ending for this couple. When frank in the video games would had never killed himself. He's a survivor through and through and they made him do this complete bitch move? Completely out of character, and very irresponsable for them to again promote their suicide as a sort of good ending or solution to their problem. As someone who struggles with suicide myself for years, that wasn't the way. Specially since it's not something the character of bill would ever do. I smell the agenda of population control a mile away. More gays, more trans, suicide is the way kids. You can skip this episode entirely and not miss anything.

I saw in another vid a comment, "Bill knew how to survive, Frank knew how to live" I think this encapsulates their relationship very well, and I love it.

Bill didn’t only have to deal with “one” runner. We only SAW him deal with one. He actually chuckled and said “never gets old.” Inferring it happens often. I could guess similar for the raid. We only saw one, but they may have had more than one

I like both versions in the game and tv adaption… overall the point of each Bill’s story was to show Joel that there is more to living then survival… the game version shows Joel not to become a bitter old person who shuts everyone out… while the tv show gives the same but while showing to have someone you love to bring your life meaning

Not feeling it man. Ellie isnt Ellie, Joel definitely isn’t Joel. Bill was a joke.

This episode was a tough pill to swallow... But, they really crushed it in the end.

In the game, the outbreak also started in the food supply, albeit not flour and grain specifically. In the beginning of the game when playing as Sara, you can find a newspaper in Joel's house with a headline about the fungus contaminating crops on a wide-spread scale.

This episode LITERALLY did NOTHING FOR THE PLOT and was only there for AWARDS.

Episode 3 ruined the show for me, I stopped watching the show after this episode.

I actually wanted to see Bill doing his survival stuff more

The "hehehehehehe" from the letter cracked my wife and I up! Says something about the character writing to get a good laugh from a suicide letter.

This episode was complete trash. Nobody asked for the mess they shoved in it for no reason other than their agenda..

Why is a woke character arc that doesn't even stay true to the game a perfect episode? As a lover of the game and someone who doesn't want to sit through man on man action for an hour ill say,? I interpreted him leaving the assault rifle in the gas station as him believing he was going to come back for it when he returned to the QZ. He wasn't committed to taking ellie anywhere other than bills to drop her off to be someone else's problem and he thought he was going to go back to his old way of life...sans tess

That letter was a significant point in the story… it resonates hard on Joel because he failed to protect Tess as he failed to protect Sarah his daughter. This will strengthen his efforts to do whatever it takes to not fail to protect Ellie!!

So most reviewers, reactors, & commenters have lauded this episode as the best of the season so far; yet user ratings on sites like IMDb & Metacritic have ranked it as the worst of the series to date.

It was very easy to grasp that the infected and raiders weren't the only ones he had to contend with. He even said "never gets old" while watching the infected walk into the shotgun trap. Also, I heard them say that episode 6 or 7 is going to be the flash back of Ellie in the left behind dlc

I was really looking forward to seeing Nick Offerman (Bill) interact with Bella Ramsey (Ellie) as I thought the chemistry between the two characters in the video game was great. So I was a bit disappointed by them cutting that out from the show. I also felt like, because Bill doesn't interact with Joel or Ellie in the present, his character overall has less importance to the story. Nick Offerman was great as Bill, which only makes me more sad that we didn't get more time with him or have him interact with Ellie at all.

Episode 3: An hour of Brokeback Mountain from 2 sentences in the game. Not an entire episode w the apocalypse or Tess. Anyone surprised we got one about a certain topic? Not a good sign for where it's going.

I liked this episode, it was done really well however I prefer the video game version of episode 3. Finding the clues to what happened to frank was so entertaining. The different traps and obstacles they had to do through to get the car was insane, it brought a lot of moment for character development and building more trust and father daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie. I hate how they just waltz on in and get a car. How was bill and frank supposed to defend themselves if it’s that easy to get in. Also why wasn’t there any signs of attack? Damage or burnt buildings when it cuts to 2023? They could have easily had frank mention that all his hard work repainting had been destroyed by raiders. Something to indicate that they’ve struggled a lot more as time has past. Also I felt really uncomfortable with the ex scene, it went on for too long. Just imply they’re doing it by them walking into the room together and closing the door behind them. I did not want to see their god dman chest hair rub on each other lmao.

My only problem with this episode was that Bill trusted frank crazy fast ... it needed more than just a piano playing to trust a stranger and have him in your bed while he easily could have murdered you

Episode 3 totally bombed imo. You didn't need an entire hour of that. We didn't get to see the town, we didn't get to see all the traps, Ellie didn't meet Bill and had funny quips, we didn't see the school or the bloater, and didnt push the truck out of the garage while fighting infected. They ruined Boston

They cut out so much of the game just to show a love story that was hinted at in the game. The fact that ellie didn't meet bill ruined the episode

My favourite part is where he shows Nick Cage the statue of him holding the golden guns.

Episode 3 was painful. Totally pointless, unrealistic, character-destroying, love story just haphazardly slapped into the show. Boring to boot... Bill and Frank, and their relationship. just far superior in the game. It hinted at a much more interesting past. I think Druckman resents TLOU 1 being universally liked.

What is impressive to me is that this episode was more like a separate movie. I also like how the episodes have different lengths.

If they can set the seeds for Abby and her father to be characters to be people we give a shit about instead of having us root for our main characters almost the entire time. With good execution we may actually see it be really compelling. I hope it’s good whatever the case

I didn't like that they deviated from the events of the game almost completely but it was done well. My biggest gripe was Bill standing in the middle of the road under fire as if he had a death wish.

I think it was alluded to in the show that Joel was who actually saved Bill, Bill told Frank to "CALL JOEL". They just didn't film Joel actually doing that, this is why Bill "owed Joel a big favor" which was never explained in the game.

The point of Bill being reckless is that his character got progressed to being more protective of his loved one (Frank) than himself which is why he's literally risking his life to protect him

I 100% thought Bill would survive the 'poisoning' right up until the end so we could see him help Joel and bicker with Ellie, I was sad that didn't happen, but I found the episode moving and enjoyed digging into some Bill back story.

They only show us one runner, he pretty explicitly says 'never gets old' which implies he has been dealing with Infected. He is also a survivalist, not a soldier. He didn't want them shooting at the house his lover was in so he went outside.

It's a powerful testament to Nick Offerman's performance that he could make me see the soft side in a paranoid conspiracist prepper with a Don't Tread On Me poster. When he was struggling to be intimate, clearly emotionally overwhelmed and struggling with severe anxiety simply from being touched intimately, I FELT that, man. Beautifully well done. I did not expect to love Bill in this way. Frank was also just wonderfully played.

I really wanted the voice actors for Bill and Tess to play the television versions but now I understand why not. Rest in Peace Annie, she will always be the one and only Tess in my eyes. Had no idea she had been sick until she died. After watching last night not sure the VA would have brought that version of Bill out. Luckily we get to have both versions.

The gay stuff in this episode was unnecessary and only felt like a checkbox they needed to check. Otherwise it was not bad. maybe a bit filler-ish. Now that it's been confirmed that season 2 will be the story of part 2, I'm EXTREMELY concerned. Big Big chance I won't watch each episode on release date and decide if I'll watch it after multiple episode.

I actually thought Bill was going to survive the narcotics and get grumpy that he survived. I would have mixed the two stories. Bill survives the suicide only to find Joel at his footsteps. The gate is swarmed with infected and Bill ultimately gives his life up pushing the car telling Joel to get in. That he’s live the life he thought he’d never have… in doing so honoring his late husband by reaching out to others. He sees the strawberry field and smiles as he pushes. A singular gunshot heard as the car rolls away to ignition

The show not being 1:1 with the game is a very good decision. This way you can experience both the game and the show without fully knowing what to expect.

I was expecting Bill to wake up the next morning, and survive the double suicide attempt, thus transforming him into the gruff, slightly bitter character we saw in the game, and so we'd still see some recreations of the Bill/Joel/Ellie interactions that were cutscenes in the game. I think it was a decent enough episode, but I feel it was completely unnecessary to deviate so much from the game, and to devote so much time to a minor character, who will only ever appear in this one episode.

Last of us is a disappointment

You guys rip a part anything that changes from the main source even in the slightest but now we're tip toeing through the mind fields when they changed this so dramatically, we can tell everyones just afraid of cancel culture. The episode could have been exactly the same without it ending that way; Bill should be in ep 4 simple as that. The Twitter echo chamber is old your opinions are just copy and pasted from it every single review, can we stop now? XD

I must be the only one who didn't like this episode. I thought it was a complete waste of time and didn't advance the plot whatsoever. We didn't need a 1 hour love episode, it could have been summed up in 20 minutes but it kept dragging. I truly believe the only reason people are praising it so much is because it's between 2 gay men. If it was Bill and a woman, people would have called it an average episode and the praise wouldn't nearly be high 🤷‍♂️

This episode added literally nothing to the story. It was literally made to show the showrunners support gay people. There is no counterargument.

I took Bill standing in the street as a sign of depression, especially when he had a completely non fatal gunshot and gave a premature "I'm dying here's all the things" speech. Like he only wanted to die with meaning.

My only problem with the episode is that the banter between Bill and Ellie in-game was hilarious. I'm annoyed that the adaptation of Bill in the show never actually met her, and we never got to see the three of them (Joel, Ellie, and Bill) work together

Bill got shot because he was trying to protect Frank… he wasn’t thinking like before as a survivalist. He did say it wasn’t afraid before Frank came to his life

Episode 3 was horrible because it does nothing for the story of Joel and Ellie.

After the episode finished I was like, "Okay, so we've had our soft interlude... Next episode is going to rip my heart out." That's the formula I was sensing.

The raid scene just needed a line to imply that this isn't the first time they've been under attack. A short montage of resetting traps after infected trigger them would be helpful too.

If the season was 20 episodes then sure have these emotional flashback episodes every now and then but 2 full episodes out of a total of 9 based on unnecessary details of minor characters is just a bit jarring, especially when other episodes feel rushed and a lot of the story from the game is missing.

Why isnt anyone talking about how they turned the show into a gay romance, bill was shooting out in the open, and they killed bill off early. But no its "aww that was so beautiful i cried w my wife" stfu.

I really did not expect the 90 degree turn they took this episode. I was expecting more backstory on how Bill, Tess, and Joel met during their interactions with the Fireflies as alluded to in the video game. Instead we got a love story? Definitely did not expect that.

Less gaye shit more survival shit...

Nothing romantic or beautiful about suicide. This was a boring filler episode that absolutely was a waste of time fast forward to see when the infected would show up and get inside. This did not move the story forward at all. This was not better than the game just a stupid flash back for two characters that don't impact the story in any good way.

They turned one of best video game levels into a full on gay love story

It seems like most people liked this episode, but I have to be honest I didn’t like it *as a The Last of Us episode*, not as a show (which standalone would be great). They removed so much of Joel and Ellie’s journey and relationship with just a single episode. I mean, they entirely changed Bill and Frank’s arcs (Frank left and hung himself) and removed all of the banter and growth between Joel and Ellie, and the previously-hilarious Bill for that matter. Furthermore, changing Bill and Frank’s arc wasn’t even the issue, it was leaving out so much that hurts it, it could’ve been two episodes. If they wanted to spend an episode on characters that will be dead immediately (Bill doesn’t even die in the game) then why not show their impact on the main characters? It makes absolutely no sense, I’m sorry. This episode was basically a standalone series that has NO BEARING on Joel and Ellie other than leaving them a truck and gear. No infected, no bloater, no Joel hanging from a trap upside down, no surviving Bill’s traps, no escape with the truck, and no Ellie stealing shit from Bill. No bow, a smaller thing, no music shop, no gnomes, no “Bobby Fischer”… I can go on and on. I know it’s a show, they have to cut stuff, and it’s a reimagining of it clearly, but they cut the BEST stuff, the most important stuff to the characters who we are going to be with the entire time. Ellie hasn’t and never will meet Bill in this show. It’s just too big of a departure for me to feel confident in the remainder of the show. Anyone I told to watch the show will now have to play the game to know why I said that, which I suppose isn’t what I was hoping for. That’s kind of my own issue I know, they obviously want to tell a new story, I just wasn’t expecting that enormous of a change in the story I guess.

I was waiting for the LGBT checkbox to get checked. Surprised it actually took 3 episodes to get to it. So we got a bit of a breather with the first 2 episodes...guess that's something. Cause of course the odds of the last two random guys alive in a huge area of land to also both be gay are 100% likely. Not 1 gay and one straight, or both straight...but both gay. 🙄 If anything it would have been more compelling story wise if 1 was gay and one was straight, and say Frank fell in love with Bill but couldn't say anything...that tension would be more real and compelling than the standard hollywood checkbox scenario.

I was so crushed when bill and frank died, I truly enjoyed the episode and I barely remembered bill from the game. It was just an episode done great and it built up that connection with the audience as it did with the two characters. Great episode and the two main actors of the episode were superb.

I always felt Bill was wasted as a character in the game and did not like the whole idea that his only friend would have left him, so the change the TV series has made is definately an improvement. However, I wish we had seen more Bill and kept him alive, especially when Nick Offerman is cast in the role which is about the most ultimate casting ever. We need more Offerman please.

I didn’t mind any of the changes they made to Bill and Frank, i just wish Bill was still alive, coping with the grief of losing frank so we could see him interact with Ellie and Joel. It made it worse to lose that and could have given more weight to bills message that its enough to save one person, further convincing Joel to move forward and bond with Ellie

This was a dumb episode. More woke throat stuffing. That part of the story in the game is you literally finding Bill to get a battery for your car. They wasted an entire episode on a love story that has no impact on the outcome of what happens next in the story. LITERALLY. If the new viewers are upset about them dying wait til they get a load of Abby. 😂 Neil Druckmann is going to screw this up just like TLOU2. Mark my words.

Horrible episode. Waste of time to introduce a character that’s already dead. If it had been a love story of a man and woman the reviews would be much different. Everyone is just scared to be considered a homophobe so they are just praising the acting. The acting was great, but as an episode to the entire season, it fell short.

This episode was perfect at showing the theme of the story: living to care about the ones you love, not just living to survive

We get to see Bill changed from a tough guy persona to getting fed berries in the garden and giggling like a school girl. SMH that wasn’t Bill.

next episode: Joel and Ellie meet two brothers and fight against an army of cannibals.

Not only was it stupid that Joel told strangers his name, it was FUCKIN stupid that for all Abby knew, he could be a DIFFERENT Joel??? Like what if it was another guy named Joel that killed her dad and she smashes the worng skull in?! My fucking god.

I think they spent way too long on the relationship considering they have almost no effect on the main story

This episode was a waste of time. Pure filler that wasn’t needed if you skip episode 3 all you’d wonder is how did Joel get a truck that’s literally the only advancement of the plot.

My thoughts... This show is lacking tension and zombies. In fact, the zombies look horrible and it just looks like makeup is being overused on them. Tess struggles with a lighter to ignite the fuel around her when she just spilled a bunch of grenades on the ground (just use a damn grenade to ignite the fuel). Her death was mad stupid. Pedro's acting is so blank and generic. Ellie is running around like she doesn't give a shit about what's going on and she doesn't show any fear. Bad guys instantly get ignited by fire in soaking wet, rainy conditions (those traps were mad dumb and impractical). Episode 3 should have been its own movie, because that's what it feels like. Neil is pushing the woke narrative way too much instead of focusing on the zombie apocalypse. It's insanely tropey and lackluster. HBO used to be the channel where top tier shows were released and you were expecting to see something special on screen. There is *NOTHING* special about this show.

I can’t listen to this BS slobbering all over this garbage episode anymore. Nothing was relevant to what happens down the road in this show. Why not flesh out Joel and Sarah’s relationship or Joel and Tess in the beginning? Something that has real meaning to things through the series. They are going to miss some important stuff later just to throw in some stupid love story that has no relevance to the overall story.

I like that in the show Joel only promised Tess he'd get Ellie to Bill. Turns out Bill is dead. It makes his decision to take Ellie across the country more believable, since he never wanted to do it in the first place. He's going to find Tommy anyways, so he reluctantly brings her along. Instead of a quick promise to a cross country trip during that one moment in the capital.
