Ellie’s whimper in reaction to Henry suicide was so heartbreaking. Bella Ramsey is such a good actress. Also, they managed to make sam's death even sadder, f*ck 😭
I was just shocked about everything, even though I played the game multiple times, but at her reaction broke me. It almost feels like she was so in shock that she didn't even realized what happend and her little whimper was more like reaction to the loud noise of the gun. I just want to hug everyone on that show haha
@@datboidego I actually felt like the "I'm sorry" was about two things, the point you mentioned but also about her being immune but not able to help him
Finally someone noticed Joel's panic and shaking when that clicker was getting in the car with ellie. Great acting from pedro, everyone else has totally ignored it.
I think it's more like Ellie is growing up in a harsh world and is adapting but Joel grew up in the old world and these crazy things are affecting him more than it is her. Or maybe they're holding off on something. They switch around some cause-effect stuff from the game. So we might be just getting to that.
@@thomaschristopherwhite9043I definitely don’t think it affected Joel more than it did Ellie, bc they showed specifically her heartbreak and reaction to both Sam and Henry’s death. It’s likely fueling her survivor’s guilt for being immune even more, while also making her less carefree than she was last episode
@@beccazach Yeah that could be too. But I think she's taking it better. Even in the game it's like that. Like I said, she adapts. Doesn't mean she's numb to it. She's just better at dealing with it being born into this reality.
*SPOILERS* If you played the game you know by the end, they basically swap places emotionally. Ellie is very broken by time they get to salt lake. While Joel is talking her ear off and she tones him out a lot.
I think Ellie isn't shutting down. Rather, now she feels responsible and driven to get West ASAP. Joel on the other hand might feel the need to push Ellie away further because if she dies, he doesn't want to end up like Henry.
And the first time he kills somebody directly, it’s his baby brother. While I get hit harder by Henry’s reaction to shooting Sam in the game, these actors killed it this episode. I was bawling lol
@@thechad4485 really? i thought the game version was a lot worse it felt rushed and we didnt really get as much of a connection - although the first time you see something is normally when it hits the most
Joel said the kids don't have anyone relying on them, so it's easier for them. After this episode especially, Ellie feels like the whole world is relying on her.
Yes, I thought the same thing! She cuts her hand not because she wants to be nice or anything, to me she does it because she might think something like "I'm immune and what for if not for saving people, right?!". She does it because she wants it to mean something. I also saw that at the end when she wrote "I'm sorry" and then immediatly started walking west, she seemed so determined, as if losing Tess and now Sam would be the very last people who would die because of that fungus. I love that so much!
@Rick King 22 I don't really think there's much of a point in differentiating in this case. There's really no detail on whether or not the infected's consciousness remains or not, but I think it would be pretty safe to assume that even if the heart is still beating, the infected person is brain dead.
In the game sam is 13 years old...but here as being 8 years old...just hits harder...and damn another heart wrenching and wonderful episode...the kid actor did a great job
When Tess died it was Ellie who just stood outside feeling her grief while Joel just walked away without caring if Ellie followed or not. This time it was Joel who was feeling it while Ellie just focused on the task at hand, heading west and started off leaving Joel to catch up to her. This was the last time Ellie will get to be like the child she is.
Ellie's reaction to Henry devastated me. I've never seen a moment of a performance like that. Its only a second long but that micro-performance blew my fucking mind. I feel lucky to have been able to see it. Stunning stuff.
One of my favorite episodes. I was really hoping the ending would somehow be different from the game. I fell in love with Henry and Sam just like with Bill and Frank. This show rips your heart out. Btw the kid playing Sam is actually deaf. He’s adorable
Yeah, I also hoped they'd do a different ending. Especially due to changing up Sams character. Aging him down 5 or 6 years and making him deaf/mute ... so I thought, maybe they are gonna travel with them this time ... and after he showed her his leg, I hoped that the blood thing somehow worked, despite that being way too easy ... and it didn't >.
Diamond Dave does a great job not spoiling for the guys, and I really enjoy his reactions from the side of someone who's played the game. Really fun stuff 😊
I think the fact that Ellie thinks her blood would help Sam in that moment, and it doesn’t, which leads to him and Henry’s death makes her want to create a cure even more. Which makes the ending and second game’s adaptation even more dynamic!
Moreover, they have already built Caitlin into the series - SPOILER vvvvvvvv the prototype of Ellie from the second part, a person who puts her revenge above any other things. Known from the podcast.
With Sam being deaf I was wondering how they were going to do the Sam and Ellie talk at the end before Sam dies… turns out they made it even more heartbreaking
I love how they fake you out with the sniper’s bad aim. We initially think this will help Joel and Ellie, and it seems more believable when we see it’s an older man, but really he’s just trying to keep them in place until Kathleen gets there.
mmmmmm I don't know. That's a bit of a stretch. Since he's an old man it makes sense that he's got bad aim, specially at night time, in the dark. And it's only after he's dead that Kathleen asks him to hold them there. What's sad though, is that he just had to do as Joel said and he'd be alright, cause he had to know by now that if Joel (outsider, bad guy) wanted to kill him, he'd be dead already. Maybe he still moved his rifle cause he saw an opportunity to be done with the suffering and misery and just die. He knew the second he moved his rifle Joel would shoot.
@@arijitsarkar4874 mmmm really?? How would you know that? Thats a bit of a stretch, if you ask me. But i think it makes more sense that Ellie wrote it cause she feels she failed him not being able to cure him. Or maybe not even that, maybe its just a "im sorry this had to happen to you".
This hit me harder than the game. In the game Sam is nearer Ellie's age, here he's just a baby and the actor really got me attached to his sweetness. 😭 And I liked Sam's reaction to the shooting better here than in the game, the shock in his voice and eyes felt so authentic, superb acting. I also really love the reveal that Kathleen's brother wasn't a monster but instead a really good man who didn't deserve to die. It puts an interesting nuance on Kathleen's crazy.
It’s even more heartbreaking because Henry has never shot or killed anyone before… he’s not a fighter at all and the fact the first and last person he ever shot and killed was his younger brother
I am hearing, but I’m conversationally fluent in ASL and I love that people are realizing how OP it would be in situations with sound-sensitive monsters:) a quiet place went there too! If fungi finally figures out how to take over humans I am absolutely teaching everyone around me ASL 😉🙌🏻
Bella Ramsey is not only killing this role, she is a very good actress. I had my doubts that she even has the range to do the second game (an older, more complex Ellie) but I really think she does.
Given how much love and thought has gone into this, they probably included some more "older Ellie" material during the audition process to make sure Bella was going to be the right fit long-term.
OH my god, stop giving spoilers! Fu"#$k! Oak and Quinn dont know anything about the game, let alone about part two, so to address an older Ellie is spoiling a whole lot of story, (who lives and who dies). Dont be stupid, guys, let them jump into their own conclusions and dont say things directly associated with what's ahead.
I just loved seeing the juxtaposition of Henry and Sam, to Joel and Ellie. Henry doesn’t have the brawn, the skills, and the gun power of Joel to survive but he’s strategic, and aware of his surroundings. I love how they talked about fear. I’ve always thought Ellie’s “fearlessness” is because she mimics Joel who often tells her “they’ll be alright”, and never shows her any sense of danger. Sam, copies henry who often seems afraid, and unsure. It broke my heart when he said he was hungry. It makes you feel greatful for the little things you have in a society like this.
18:26 The way the bloater kills Perry by ripping its head in half by the jaw is the exact same way it kills you in game. The difference is that in game, you have to watch it up close and personal.
WOW- I was not expecting Sam to show the bite, and Ellie using her blood....Damn this was a welcome change, and makes my theory(which I'm gonna keep to myself)make more sense.
The big monster y'all saw was a Bloater. It's heartbreaking watching Sam get infected for Henry to kill Sam and then kill himself. That killed me and it made me cry.
Also in the situation where the clickers start pouring out of the ground, it’s actually better that Ellie stays where she is for a bit. The clickers are blind and can only detect humans through movement or sound so her staying still was actually safer.
Hi guys, I was talking to my daughter this evening, and she told me on this episode while they were shooting the big explosion. She was on the backside of it, and she said that it was really impressive to watch happen. Also, when the Snipper shots were being fired, this was in an industrial area, so she was a bit away, but what was cool was listening to the echoes of the bullets throughout the area. She happened to be in an area with tall buildings, and the sounds reverberated around her. She says that was a cool experience.
Wow. Phenomenal episode. Loved the minor changes with Henry and Sam, as I felt they lent room for a more emotional ending. I got misty-eyed for sure with this one. That and the infected scenes were done beautifully and I’m actually so happy they had that latter scene. Probably my favorite episode yet.
This episode was incredible. I loved how they filmed that infected scene and the characters of Henry and Sam. This show delivers in every aspect. I think the interesting thing they gave us to think about was that no one is really right and good, humanity is a mess. Fedra esp in that city sounded horrible but then the people who take over do horrible things too. Yeah the infected are dangerous, but they act without choice because they got sick. People are the real monsters.
Ellie's blood doesn't have antibodies. If the fungus was killed by something in her blood, then the scanners wouldn't show red. Her blood is full of the fungus, it's just not taking root in her brain. I've never played the games, but logically speaking, Ellie's blood isn't the cure. If anything, her blood might actually infect someone. She's a carrier.
Fun Facts: Joel collects the comic books in the game for Ellie. Cordyceps is one of the fungi that is composed of chitin; crustaceans and a lot of arthropods also have a lot of chitin in their exoskeleton. As the infected get worse and worse (covered in more and more of the fungus), you can kind of think of it as having more and more armor/exoskeleton. This was a great episode. I think the whole "nothing happened until Kathleen took over" is referring to how the brother was very pacifistic, but sometimes that doesn't work. Sometimes you have to be cruel and aggressive, like Kathleen, to win. Great reactions to the big boy infected! Oh, Ellie's belief that she could cure Sam made it so much more painful. I think she genuinely believed that it would work. She is a child, she has been told over and over that she is a cure, she has no understanding about how a cure would be made so it makes sense that she thinks it could be relatively simple... Oh, so sad. She apologized at the grave. When Tess died, Ellie hung around to grieve, while Joel shoved his emotions down grimly and pressed on. This time it was Joel who lingered and Ellie who left. He is becoming more emotional, and she is becoming colder/more traumatized. Also, Joel and Henry mocked "endure and survive." Henry survived but couldn't endure. Both parts are important. Sam also faced the window. Two things: He knew he wouldn't see Ellie, which means he wouldn't attack her. He was protecting her. As he felt himself turn, he knew he wouldn't hear her. If he couldn't see her, he wouldn't know she was there and thus couldn't attack her. Also, it has been confirmed over the years of the game that runners DO have the person in their head. So Sam was in there when he attacked Ellie. Something to think of though -> If Ellie never touched him, if no one ever touched him or got in his vision, he would be sitting there forever watching the sunset. He's deaf, so he wouldn't hear anything. Once he hit the clicker phase, and he could no longer see, then he would be sitting there in darkness and silence forever. If you play the video game, when you get to the sewers area, get every note from Ish. They give a nod to him which I appreciate (the part of the tunnels with the kid's room and the picture on the wall that says, "Our protectors -> Daddy and Ish." It's a fascinating and heartwarming/heartbreaking story).
After watching you guys react I cried all over again. This show is more than an APOCALYPSE SHOW! In large part this is due to the actors , If the casting had not been done so well this show would not be this good. The acting is Phenomenal by everyone. Oak is right THE LINES ARE so BLURED between good and bad, right and wrong, and this show makes you understand people are just as dangerous to other people. In the end human kind is its own worst enemy.
I thought episode 3 was sad but man this episode hit me like a ton of bricks! I knew one of them had to be infected but wasn’t prepared for the heartbreak of Ellie trying to save Sam and Henry’s horror at realizing he just killed his little brother. Oh man, I can’t deal with this show, it’s so intense but so good!
I never played the game and know everyone has been crying through these episodes . I had not cried until I watched this episode. I was recked! The kid actors in this show are incredible. Sam was amazing you felt his fear. The little kid clicker in the car with Elli and the way she moved was incredible. The effects in this show with the creatures just gets more and more fantastic as this story builds.

Great episode. Also really happy that Kathleen got what was coming. You don’t mess with kids man. She and the militia became just as bad as FEDRA there.
Just wanted to let u guys know how much i appreciate the reactions. Been watching you for almost one year. Never change the great and unique way u guys do the great intros, reviews and reactions!!
This show is so great. For a show about a post-apocalyptic hellscape, there is so much dedicated to human interaction and the relatio.... 17:23 WHOA! The look on your collective faces is priceless!! Lol, they just gave us the action we were expecting and more.
This show breaks my heart the way Walking Dead used to in it's early seasons. Stunning attention to psychological detail, directed in a way that lets us feel what they're going through instead of just watching things unfold.
Incredible episode. Best so far IMO. The acting from everyone has been phenomenal. HBO just doesn't miss. The Sopranos, Game Of Thrones, House Of Dragon, Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Wire and now The Last Of Us. Just incredible.
When Sam and Henry die in the game it absolutely destroyed me, keep in mind I was around 15 when the game came out in 2013. I couldn’t keep playing for a couple minutes, I was in utter shock.
Ellie's reaction to Henry's death is heartbreaking. In the game you just see Joel's reaction and hear her say "oh my god", here it was all the way around, which made it even harder to watch. This show keeps impressing me every week
I always love The Oak's outlook and analysis. He goes so in depth into every project may it be Wall-E Or The Last of Us. When I started watching you guys' channel i never expected yall you be so introspective and appreciative of your work, but I'm glad I gave yall a chance and subscribed. Now u watch all your reactions!
The little changes they implemented with this episode in comparison to the original story lends itself better to what plays out later. Very smart of them to do it this way
OMG, this episode made me weep like a baby, with the Henry/Sam storyline. The actors did such a beautiful job , wanted their story to continue into the next episode. Another fantastic reaction. 🎉 Love you guys! ❤
Diamond Dave I really appreciate your editing. It is always stellar. 👍 This series is amazing. Fabulous science fiction themes of situation ethics. Note - the actor who plays Sam is actually deaf and the show searched very hard to find him. And they used WETA Workshop of LOTR fame for the infected.
The fact that Joel still lunged to help Ellie even without a gun before Henry shot at him just shows how much he cares for her. You know that had Henry not pointed the gun at him, he would have been right there to hold her after witnessing Sam’s murder. Bella and Pedro are both so expressive with their eyes, and I’m so glad so much of the cast was nominated for Emmys! So deserved!
Last night's episode had me on edge of my seat. Then at the end, in tears. I believe what happened to Henry and Sam will have a effect on Ellie. And that bloater OMG.
“You better get up and run Ellie” she was crawling to a hole (the car window) just like Joel told her to do the day before. I LOVE the unspoken bond between them in this one. “Do you trust me?” As soon as she got out of the car she looked up to where he was KNOWING he had her covered. Joel on over watch taking out anything that came near her was GREATNESS.
Hey guys, great episode. The level of performance on the part of everyone involved was spectacular. Not to mention that they released all the infected that had been missing in the previous chapters 😅😅😅😅. It's always a pleasure to see the chapter with you again Greetings from the distant land of Chile
I’m watching a few other people react to this show but I truly enjoy watching you guys especially. Y’all do an amazing job throughout and at the end with the analysis. Credit to Diamond D for not giving anything away. ❤ you guys.
The Bloater roaring from the ground sent a shiver down my spine. It would've been epic if the Bloater attacked one of the trucks. I hope we get more Bloaters in S2
I love how they're showing the flipside of "We the people." Different doesn't always mean better, anyone can be blinded by revenge. Reminds me of how Nazi collaborators were treated. Yes, some were real POS, but many were just trying to survive. I would have lost it on them for making so much noise! "I'm scared all the time." Reminded me of Bruce's, "I'm always angry." Lol I was waiting for the reveal of one of them to be bit...wasn't expecting Ellie to try THAT though. Kinda poetic that Kathleen got taken out by a kid while trying to kill a kid, but also fatalistic that Sam gets bitten. Henry's reaction is perfect. GREAT ENDING. You can feel how Ellie and Joel are feeling inside. It's cool that they got a deaf person to play a deaf person. I never realized how different Bella's natural voice and acting voice are. Definitely still right behind Andor. TLOU and Hill House are fighting for #2 right now.
@@litttlemochi Makes sense...Even to me, as I consider the game script to be canon...It's not easy to change the details of such a beloved story without fans' brains going: That does not seem right! 😂 But they are doing a good job so far, imo.
Earlier in the episode Henry mentions that he never shot and killed anyone (himself, with a pistol.) And knowing that his own little brother had been the first person Henry killed with a gun. and of course also the last. Ouch, it hurts!
Oak is like my spirit animal. Even though he's such a big guy, you can tell he gets the most emotionally invested. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. Really enjoy Quinn & Diamond Dave too. Loved your reactions to everything HP, loving the Hill House reaction series and this one too. Keep 'em coming!
I loved Henry & Sam in the game, but boy, did I love them here. With all the additional infos and the fact that Sam's deaf - their whole story was so well written! Also, combined with all the action, the comedy and drama it was one of my favourite epsiodes. The moment I saw the sniper, I was like "here we go, shit's going down" 😭Loved your reaction, especially to the bloater, the little clicker girl and of course little Sam's death and Henry's suicide. The "I'm sorry" at the end hit me really hard, not as hard as episode 3, but still. Thank you for your reaction, guys 💚💪
Yeah, this one broke me. More than Sarah and more than Bill and Frank. I was sobbing at the end, I've always felt this was the saddest game chapter. (In the 1st game 😉) Kathleen's quest for revenge wiped out her entire community - definitely a running theme, if you know, you know lol. Diamond Dave's face when the Bloater came out was EPIC, and you all reacted the same way I did "HOLY FUCK RUNNNNNN!!!!!" 🤣🤣 This show is so freaking good, it proves if the writing is good it will stand up in any medium. See you in the next one guys, I think we ALL need a doctor now!!👊
I was literally yelling for Ellie, Sam and Henry to MOVE JUST RUN so much hahaha I was so immersed this show is phenomenal so far and I can't believe we're already past half way through season 1 :( i'm not ready for this to be over
Thank you for giving one of the only nuanced discussions about the no good guys/no bad guys (and at least understanding it from multiple perspectives) aspects of this show. (I get very disheartened when people don't because they live in our real world.) This show is very clever in getting you to detest a character and/or their moral argument only to punch you in the face with a likeable character making the same argument and then getting people either to struggle with the cognitive dissonance or be (hilariously, horribly) hypocritical.
Actor Jeffrey Pierce who played Perry and got wrecked by the Bloater does the voice acting for the character of Tommy ( Joel's Brother ) in the video games 😎
I think no one has commented on that, may be I'm wrong. But if by any mean you missed the info : Percy, Kathleen's right hand man with the beautiful white beard, is actually played by Jeffrey Pierce who actually is the actor who plays Tommy in the video game :)
Great reaction guys, yet again!! I started tearing up the minute Ellie & Sam were in the bedroom together and especially when Ellie put her blood on Sam’s wound and hugged him. It’s crazy how instantly you get attached to characters in this show and feel so much when they die.I’d love for this show to continue for many seasons.
Finally watching your reactions! Man, even though I was sad with Bill and Frank, it was Sarah and then Henry and Sam that rlly got me. It's just something about children, who have their whole lives ahead of them and have hope and their whole futures ahead of them ended tragically and unjustly, that just pains me to my core. Idk if you guys listen to the post episode podcasts, but the directors said that the fact that Sam can't hear is an indication that he was still in there, when he turned. They said that the original mind deteriorates as the brain gets infected, but it usually takes months for that process to finish. And I remember in the games that you could hear some of the infected cry or ask for help when they were feeding so it makes it especially sad that Sam was still in there somewhere, watching his body betray him and do things he didn't want to do. Just adds a level of dread to Sam's story, especially with his question about if it would still be him inside if he turns into a monster. It also makes it so heartbreaking because he was turned away from Ellie when she woke up, implying that some time in the night, he knew he was gonna turn and turned away so he wouldn't attack her. Also love your perspective on Kathleen. Most people just hate her and feel vindictive joy when she dies a horrible death, but if you think about it, lots of us wouldn't be able to forgive, nor feel any resolution with that type of compassion, in her shoes. I know I wouldn't be able to forgive someone if they killed my brother or a loved one of mine. I would hope to believe that I wouldn't be the type of person who would commit to revenge, but who knows? If I was pushed that far, in a world like that, maybe I would? Especially because you can see both sides of the story, with Henry and Kathleen, it just goes to show how f'd the whole world is and how people have to make choices that they shouldn't have to make. It also goes to show how messed up revenge and rage-filled anger is, when you get consumed by it, letting it cloud your judgement and priorities, but can't process those feelings with anything besides more misery and anger. In their podcast they said that “So much of The Last of Us is about people that have to make choices. And whether they’re heroes or villains really depends on your perspective.” And I think that really fits with the theme of The Last of Us. Again, thanks for another great reaction!
