It's a new The Last of Us! A very sweet and very sad installment this week. The last twelve seconds of the reaction got muted by RU-vid for the Linda Ronstadt song. Sorry for that.

Bill's role in the game is not entirely different from that in show. His story is different, but his role is exactly the same: 1) Supply Joel and Elli with weapons and a Truck - check! 2) Be a catalyst for Joel to begin opening up to Elli - check! In the game he's the bad example for what Joel would turn into, if he'd continue to tread the bitter "survival alone is everything" path. In the show he's the good example for what Joel could have (purpose), if he'd start caring for someone. Both versions lead Joel towards getting closer with Elli.

Thanks for seeing the upside to this change. Too many folks seem hung up on the missing developments during gameplay in this chapter. There's plenty of chance for that to continue to develop, everything doesn't need to happen 1:1 at the same time and place as the game. I liked the changes here, and it was a great subversion story wise for folks thinking they know everything that's gonna go down.

People struggle to admit the fact Bill purpose to Joel's story arc remains Intact.. Different examples used but both lead to same outcome for Joel's story development. From a visual perspective of a viewing audience it was better to make Bill's story this way! The letter he wrote had meaning that we have seen that would make sense in a visual storytelling narrative! The game version wouldn't translate well. We would still be more understanding to Joel's hardened character after what he went through start of outbreak. This showed us some whom was worse than Joel before outbreak happened to becoming a better person during outbreak through trust and love

I read the scene where Bill looks startled to see Frank up when bringing him his first meal the same way you guys did at first, that he's wary of Frank snooping around. After seeing it a few times I'm reading it more like he's startled because he thinks Frank looks really good cleaned up. Like if it were a man and woman I think that that would have been a really apparent interpretation.

It took me seeing some reactions to realize the purpose of the radio message being "Danger". that was Bill essentially leaving a message for Joel and Tess to come "help", but when they got there they'd find all the weapons and things they ever needed to protect themselves. It's Bill leaving behind for his "friends" what he could. And when Joel comes in, the door slams shut. Bill can finally go.

Don't forget that this began in 2003, when being gay was more frowned upon, and marriage was illegal. That might explain some of the characters' actions and proclivities.

In the game it's implied that Bill and Frank were a couple from the letter and Bill's reaction to Frank's death. As well as Bill's magazine outing him. The show gave them a bigger story, but it wasn't a new story.

Exactly, it's weird to me people claiming they played the game but are now outraged that the show 'changed' Bill to be gay. They weren't paying attention or ignored it due to their bias/bigotry.

There is a video from Georgia Dow (a therapist react) that explains the episode and both personality of Frank's and Bill. It makes much more sense and even more heartwarming. Frank is a very trusting person with a child-like wonder that's why he was very forward and too comfortable.

In the podcast, it was sort of revealed that Frank could see Bill was gay, and Frank is a handsome man. Even without getting new ideas, it's similar to how girls act when they see a guy likes them - you tend to be more positive. When he made compliment to Bill "I know I don't seem like the type - No, you do.", Bill's reaction said everything - "did he say that?why did he say that? what did he mean??nothing, Bill, calmthe***ckdown!!!he meant nothing!!!!!". Being a gay in a traditional-surroundings small town, Bill probably always felt alone and ashamed, he was never able to find anyone and he kind of shut his feelings down. Frank, showing his intention - he leaned to kiss him very slowly - showed him that this sympathy is very mutual.

I’m sad we didn’t get the Bill/Ellie scenes from the game. I’m very very happy Bill got this ending instead. And both versions accomplished the same goal, getting them a ride to the next chapter, and reminding Joel to let someone in
@mathewfinch
@mathewfinch Год назад
Both versions serve the same narrative purpose: showing Joel the value of letting people in. It's just that in the game it's more of a cautionary tale if you don't let people in, and the show is representative of the beauty of letting other people in.

Talk about a changing of the times...the one relationship in the show that's somewhat healthy and normal (for an apocalypse) is a gay couple. Not something you'd expect 10, 20 years ago.

Assuming Bill's in his 40s in 2003, he would have grown up in the 60s and 70s. In a small town. While gay. Yeah, I would have hated the world too. It's so sad that in this universe the apocalypse happened less than a year before gay marriage would start to be legalized in the US.

The beauty of this episode is that it subverts our expectations. We've been conditioned through modern storytelling to fear everything, especially the benign, the innocuous. Dolls, children, children with dolls, dolls that look like children, all manner of seemingly harmless and familiar things, all trying to kill you. We expect that any kindness will be answered with violence, that any trust met with betrayal. We as an audience have been primed to fear the most faithful of friends, the most reliable family members - especially in this particular genre of horror - and when we encounter a story about caring and commitment amongst the ruins of a dying world, we don't know how to process it and it hits hard. "I was not expecting this" seems to be the most common refrain, with good reason. This is ostensibly a series about a 'zombie apocalypse' where anyone and everyone can go from being a kindred soul to a mortal threat in an instant and no one is to be trusted, especially other humans. Yet this particular tale is about trust, and love, both matrimonial and romantic. It's about allowing oneself to be vulnerable and in that vulnerability, finding those moments of existence that are both ephemeral and priceless. We expect a calamity, a personal buskin beyond the destruction of our civilization. We anticipate a type of misfortune that doesn't occur. During the worst catastrophe in the history of human kind, we bear witness the best thing to ever happen to these two humans, and it's profound; jarring. We await a devastation that never comes to pass; that expectation of tragedy is subverted by a story of love. We expect blood and destruction; what we get is a masterpiece about small, beautiful lives lived less ordinary. This is one of the best stories ever told on film, in my opinion, and it's based on a video game; we've come a long way from Pong.

the stones are for water level, peoples who live near rivers do this to measure the rising waters, and know if you can camp nearby or not. when the river rises, the water gradually covers the stones and we can see them disappear below the water level, it is a kind of measurer over time to know id the river level is stable and safe or not.

dunno how to feel about the ep . i like some of the stuff it wasnt a bad executed romance it got me even a tiny bit emotional and we got a bit of expossition about the outbreak and how it further did unfold with some nice visuals to boot . on the other hand did the relationship between joel and ellie again suffer compared to the original not just because the story of frank and bill was rewritten and leaves their for a different impression on joel and ellie it also took most of the 1 hour episode up what was just unecessery . aside logical fallacies like bill just standing like an idiot in the middle of the road to shoot at the raiders or them not putting up more defenses against a raider that would actually be smart enough to just drive with a car through the front gate . i didnt want to see gay sex either but hbo makes it clear that i am not allowed to not like what i see . the acting was quite good but the way it was written was very morally dubious but not in a good way . and the entire piano scene was just dumb insted how it was intended to be impactful simply because it was way too fast . fast is fine if properly executed but this wasnt . i wanna like the episode but we remain with joel and ellie and their relationship barely changed until the last 5 minutes of the ep . worse ellies over confidence with her lack of fear and empathy just puts another big red flag onto this for me . i want to like it but this episode just makes me think its gonna be just completely differently written because of Part 2 and Abby later on . i fear this story is just a vehilce for pushing Druckmanns ideology and he doesnt care if he has to tackle Part 1 of the game to death for it . the 1 : 1 scenes will probably leave a bitter sour taste in my mouth when this continues on .

You're missing the bigger picture. The series is called The Last of US not The Last of Joel and Ellie. In every episode their has been a tragic loss due to the apocalypse. The first episode we lost a little girl, the second...we lost a Women, and in the third we lost 2 men. They are depicting that we are losing our humanity, communication and most importantly Love/Friendships. Secondly, I find it amazing that everyone that has any kind of feedback on that episode always focuses in on "Gay Sex" when it was 1 scene. You would think from the way you guys like to describe it, it was a full gay porn episode. It was Love..no matter how you want to minimize it. The piano part was basically a confirmation that they saw each others heart. I think you just turned it off because it was 2 guys and you're possibly an Andrew Tate crony who believes that men shouldn't be sensitive or wear their emotions on their shoulder. Thirdly, what has Neil Druckmann done to you besides bring you a game that you obviously love because you are wanting them to portray the exact same scenes from the game into an "Adaptation" of the game. I think you need to remove your prejudices and insert your Humanity and Heart and understand what message Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin is trying to convey here in the amazing series. I swear you will feel a lot better when you remove your expectations of the series and watch it for what it is.
@timdouglas2056
@timdouglas2056 Год назад
A note -- this change from the game was Mazin's idea, not Druckmann's. I'm positive the team behind the show wants the best show it can make, not to push an agenda. It's okay to not like the change. Not everything is a conspiracy, though.
@EsperUltima
@EsperUltima Год назад
Maybe you can't just see it, but the theme of this episode is Tess's last words "Save who you can save" and eventually was also what Bill passed on to Joel albeit in different words. The story is there to add gravity to those words as it wouldn't have emotional impact on the audience if they just skipped the story and just use those words. Here is the thing...the truth isn't absolute. The mind does this weird thing that if you believe in something to be true, then it doesn't matter what everyone else says, it is your truth. Just like how you think every depiction of gay relationship is an agenda, if you believe that it is an agenda, it will stay that way in your mind, even when it's not an agenda and just simply a story to be told. I mean, flat-earthers believe earth is flat...🤷🏼‍♂️
@JimmyRussle
@JimmyRussle Год назад
Oh did you get triggered by the gay sex? Poor boy. Whats "Morally Dubious"? The fact they are gay? How does HBO force you to watch? If you dont like it, dont watch. Gay people exist. They have forever. Now that they are occasionally depicted in media, you take great offense and label it morally dubious. Also, whats your problem with Abby? She has muscles? I mean i cant imagine a circumstance in the apocalypse why a woman would want to train and get buff so she can actually fight and be an asset for her community. It would just never happen! Women are supposed to be meek and cook your food, not be out there actually doing things. Ewww.
