Never was a Halo gamer, I grew up as a PS kid. But knowing there was a devout group keeping the game alive, seemingly making a nod to Halo Reach, is definitely heartwarming. I'm an avid Team Fortress 2 fan and the whole, Dead Game, nonsense as always been an annoyance of mine. Like you said, a game isn't dead as long as those brave few dare to keep it going. Amazing content man! Learned something new today.
i knew of the story, didn't know how long it went. to this day though, there has not been a game that has struck an emotional chord with me better than halo 2 & maybe reach. Bungie did a fantastic job with the orchestral sound blending with military march rhythmic drums and hard rock. hearing the soundtracks again gives me chills, bringing me nostalgia and so many emotions of my escapist youth playing games with the boys. Halo will always be my favorite game franchise. but when I say Halo, I mean combat evolved through Reach. thank you for the quick video commemorating the love and dedication people had to Halo, and to the original game that put xbox live, and online gaming as a whole on the map.
I've seen this story covered before, in a bit more detail, but every time I remember it, it just...hurts. Knowing that, whether or not it's "just a game," this is what people are willing to do for the things they love. Even something as simple as a video game. I can only imagine, though. Being Apache. Being the last one. Because once everyone else was gone, and he started that final, 15 hour marathon, there was nobody else to do it. Nobody else could finish the job now, except for him. Knowing that _your_ hands would be the one to end something that touched so many people, to know that you finally pulled the plug and let it go. Even for a video game service...that can't have been easy to do.
Right? I was trying to visualize and re live the moment he experienced. Like what was he thinking minutes before planning to leave? It probably felt like he had all this power, all these shared memories in his control and it will all be gone at the push of a button.
Microsoft was just as hurt as everyone else was, but the future was around the corner and there was much to pave way for the modern gaming scene, which sadly is an incredibly divisive landscape these days
But when one thing ends, another begins, just like when a flower dies, there is the promise of a seed that sprouts a new flower and therefore a new beginning
And they say videogames are just videogames, truly and really one of the greatest, yet emotional stories ive ever heard, really reminds us how far we have come and thats what makes us appreciate old games even more
My first hour of playing Halo 2 multiplayer on OG xbox the servers were getting shut down that day. So I just decided to leave. I should have stayed in the game.
Whats wild to me is Halo 2 multiplayer online only has 5 years, 5 months, 6 days. Really just think about how much happened in that time. Thats a super short period of time now compared to most games. Whats even more wild is how long halo 2's multiplayer on the MCC is coming up on 9 years this november. Still boggles my mind.
Fun fact: on April 9th, 2024, nintendo officially shut down their nintendo network service (online play for the 3ds and the Wii U console) it was kinda like this, where as long as you stay connected, you'd be fine. as of august 14, 2024, one player is left standing. Fishguy6465 is the only remaining player on the network, "playing" mario kart 7.
2004-2008 Halo 2 online was amazing. I ended up using a Dazzle to record awesome trick/slide jumps and 100s of Super Bounces. VHS tapes were my first recordings lol. High Impact Halo and Mythica websites were full of an amazing community. It's unfortunate 100s upon 100s of glitches and tricks have been erased from history since Mythica shut down. We were also using put locker (putfile?) maybe. YT wasn't around then. I got to 37-39 rank across all Playlist. Unfortunately again, everyone at that level was modding or bridging for host. Bridging for host was viable because modders needed host to mod a matchmade game and it had to be on a DLC map. Host also gave you the ability for your shots to register much easier and faster. I loved Halo 3 but not the competitive side. The BR was broke and was not fixed until 5 years ago on MCC.
Best game ever... best ppl to talk shit with while no scoping fools, animation cancels, and super jumps... best friends Ive never met but we played daily.. miss you halo 2... thanks for making the video, didnt expect to get so emotional over it..
Just want to jump in and say that I don't know where the idea of Bungie offering us Beta codes started. I want to be clear in that as far as I'm aware, nobody from Bungie or Microsoft contacted us in any way. Certainly not me. The REACH Beta code I got was given to us by a writer at Gamesmaster or Game Informer or something.
Best game ever made. I once had a Grail H2 poster signed by the entire development team. I sold it for just shy of $5,000 cad. I hope it’s still out there in good hands. I love this game so much that I have some regret on that sell. RIP
You can still play online on Halo 2 lol custom servers and also insignia is working on getting it back up with their Xbox live replacement, I’m modding my Xbox tomorrow so I’ll be online on Xbox OG soon. Like over 6000+ have signed up with insignia already and it’s growing. You can already play over 60 games online too.
Another great story is Minecraft's Great Potato War. Well worth watching, hilarious video, but a sad true story. Technoblade never dies. The legend lives on. I'm going to watch it again right now.
Halo 2 was crazy for the medium of gaming. There shutting down 360 in 2024. Gaming has gotten pretty stale the last 10 years. A hot take from me. The remakes recently are signs of hope for the new hardware. Dead space. Re4. Im still in favor for a halo ce re remake but it probably won't happen.
You seem to have missed the point of everything and devolved into your childish state of making fun of things people enjoy simply because you don't like it.
@LikeZoinksGangWay I'm not saying it wasn't fun and the whole server standing story is pretty impressive Although that would have simply never happenned on PC since anybody can host a server and easily keep it active at any time of the day, there are plenty of instances of devs shutting sever off but the game still being active for years since you actually have freedom to mod, customize and host your games that you paid for Even a 20yo game can still be hosted by anyone meanwhile on consoles when the devs pull the plug there's just nothing you can do, they just took your game away from you

We are all on the same side, we are all players, the devs and manufacturer are the ones on the opposite sides. They are he ones limiting consoles capacities
