Russ is on the cutting edge of the bike industry for the everyday cyclist. Make it happen!

This is definitely not cutting edge. It’s a friction shifter with a ratchet. It’s a step backwards with a quirk. Gevenalle already made drop bar friction shifters.

I am definitely interested in these shifters and I would 100% buy a set as soon as they hit the market even though I don't have an immediate need for them. The existence of these shifters would create an ecosystem in which we could easily experiment with drivetrain components.

In an industry where nothing is compatible, having ONE shifter able to do anything is a breath of fresh air and there is totally a market for this. Getting a nice steel bike with both mullet setup on one set of gravel wheels then swaping the cranks for a 2x for touring... Genius. Get it done!

This is very cool, and I’m always glad to see new parts made available for those of us outside of the mainstream. That said, I most likely won’t ever move from 2x9 or 3x9 drivetrains unless forced to, so it’s unlikely I’d have a need for this shifter.

I was thinking that, but then I thought why not a 2x with a not-gigantic-but-still bigger-than-36t 12-cog rear? With much closer jumps? I'll spend the rest of the day doing gear-8nch numbers dannit

Great job Sir. I love the direction. I am an avid fan of friction shifting, almost all my 30 bicycles have it. I am also a rabbid fan of Paul Components specifically the thumbies. I am ok being stuck at 10 speeds with the Paul's thumbies but I kinda wish there was more compatibility between things. So compatibility is my two cents. Great job on the channel, I love almost everything you guys put out, Cheers! - M

Just in time?!My wife and I we’re talking last night about preferring friction. We’ve been running Sram road shifters(1x) the last couple years and while the benefits are fantastic for us. Less exposed cable/housing(always traveling) and being able to safely shift in an intersection at the bottom of a hill in the rain with traffic for example(again always traveling, new places unexpected weather, detours etc.). We’ve never adapted to the plastic click feel and never attained the enjoyable intuitive visceral experience we get from friction. I will say our current road brake shifters have preformed flawlessly and the overall tidiness is appreciated. But it never feels quite right. Also Loves the Wild Bikes interview!!!

I'm not going to lie I find the return of friction shifting as an option to be kind of heartening. Indexing is cool and all - I've got trigger shifters on a trek mountain bike I've rebuilt, but 8-speed shifters with a 7-speed cassette just looks wonky even if it works, but I like the low maintenance worry-free nature of the thumb shifters on my other bike.

I am running a 3x10 11-42 cassette, a 105 long and a set of old shimano thumbies on alt bars. Thumbies would be my preference however I would try bar ends just for shots and giggles and would reconsider drops to have the capacity to run a 2xwide range cassette to meet my needs. I would certainly buy one. A matched one at of ratcheting thumbies would be my dream

This is awesome, 12 speed 1x mountain range on a drop bar is something we DESPERATELY need. This would even allow a 2x12 setup to get a super low range, or not have to use a crazy 50T rear, or just get better gear ratios throughout the range. I've run a friction bar end once as an experiment on your channel's suggestion and LOVED it. I was deeply disturbed, as an index fundanmentalist, and now feel inexorably drawn to throwing Campagnolo wheels into my Shimano roadie set up. I can currently bodge left hand ( friction ) spare shifters into my 1X drivetrains but a Soma 12 ( and maybe 13? ) future-friendly bar end would be a VERY DESIREABLE THING.

In other words, it's a ratcheting friction shifter. The concept is similar to the SRAM three speed indexed twist grip shifter, which has lots of ratchet notches instead of three fixed position. I've found it to be very nice, so these bar-ends should be just as friendly to use. A lot nicer than the SunTour stem shifters on my 1974 Benotto. No slip.

I’ve been on friction for a couple of weeks now and it’s been great. I’m running an Uno with a 1x Deore setup. It took me a little while to get used to it. It’s super easy to shift to a smaller cog but it took me a while to learn to do decent shifts to a larger cog. Makes sense because the derailleur is always pulling toward smaller cogs. I finally figured out that, if I’m shifting to a larger cog, I need to give the shifter a very slight bump after I feel the chain shift to the next cog. It’s become second nature and it’s working great.

Running the microshift sram friction / indexed bar end shifter for 11 speed here, it works ok but this looks way better. I, for one, am all in favor of your 11sp shifter. Personally, I prefer simplicity in my bicycles over the convenience of failure prone brake-shift levers. I have used ERGO levers, and while they are good if anything breaks I am unable to get parts for them because they're too old! Simplicity, reliability and serviceability make my bicycles go. I hope you're able to get these shifters made. I'll be buying several.

Bonkies, Russ! Your collab with a manufacturer to make production possible is a breakthrough! Just to mention it, another benefit of a larger shift pulley will be to lessen cable breakage at the shifter due to all previous shifters having too tight a flex radius for the cable diameter. Thank you for your representation of an underserved market segment you are helping to define.

So I finally did the setup I wrote about four months ago: rear is the ENE 12-speed bar end, front is a Rivbike silver shifter I had in the bin. The ENE drives a Tiagra not-compatible-with-prior-Shimano-ten-speed-cable-pull needs-extra-cable-pull ten-speed derailleur (and runs it very well, thank you!). I've got it on my Ti road bike, and I don't give a good goddam what anybody I ride with, or anybody on this channel, thinks. Bikes should be affordable and customizable, and old stuff can be made to work. Thanks to you and Merry Sales.
