Remember, a very slow plane was *NOT* what ship defenses expected back in those days. That's why the Fairey Swordfish was so dangerous, because its slow speed made it actually difficult to shoot down from ship AA fire.

Fancy having to fly a slow-moving wooden plane towards enemy ships bristling with AA guns, knowing that the chances are you will never get there, and also knowing if you do get there that you are going to die anyway. Crazy.

Historical notes - First, this attack actually happened just past midnight. But I had to make it in the late evening in the recreation, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see anything! Also, the USS Callaghan also had a camo paint scheme I believe, but I was unable to get that specific livery for this video. But other than that, it should be accurate :) Please consider supporting me by grabbing something from the TJ3 History store! TJ3History.shop

The Fairey Swordfish “Stringbag” was an amazing plane. Biplane. It was the front line torpedo bomber for the UK for the entire war. They attacked the Bismarck in numbers. And they raided Taranto, Italy’s main naval base, sinking Battleships there, setting the example the Japanese copied for their attack on Pearl Harbor. And they did it with hardly any losses. In both cases they made it back to their carriers and the carriers made their way out of harm’s way. The book, “To War In A Stringbag” is an excellent resource.

TJ please don’t take this constructive criticism the wrong way. I enjoy your videos, especially the WWII Aviation. Your voice is not terrible, neither is your audio, but there are gains to be made. Your delivery, however seems a little forced, Shattner like if you will. Though I appreciate not hearing monotone. I appreciate seeing the face of the voice. You could optimize that more. The CGI video footage is outstanding. The story structure and timelines amazing. I don’t know squat, just my two cents, which inflation adjusted, even in that last two years equals about .01 cents.

Dad was in that Taffy and fought at Sea and on the Shore at Okinawa. He spoke of this sinking. After the Atomic Bombs were dropped and the Surrender Occurred, Pop was tasked to make sure all Japanese Aircraft had their Propellers removed after an attack by Japanese Planes on a Yonton Airfield , Okinawa Based B-32 Dominator over Tokyo . ( with the last Air Casualty for a U.S. Air Crewman.) Dad was part of the Joint Forces Technical Air Intelligence Bureau. To make sure the Japanese had removed the Props from all Aircraft he and a Pilot found a VERY War Weary Japanese Willow Bi-Plane( the only open Cockpit Aircraft available… and used it to film 🎥 Aircraft from at Atsugi Airfield , and Japanese Ships at Kobe, Yokohama and Yokosuka. The Engine was almost totally burned up and gummed up from using a Crude Pine 🌲 Root Derived Turpentine for Fuel. The Fuselage had been packed with oily rags, paint cans and anything flammable for a Kamikaze Flight that didn’t come to be. He and the Pilot removed the material, but almost passed out in flight from the fumes. The Engine was HEAVILY scored inside from the Turpentine” Fuel”. The Film 🎥 he shot can be found on You Tube if you know what and where to look for.

You're mistaken on saying the Japanese were running out of planes. They had over 12,000 planes left when they surrendered. Before the surrender they were still producing planes. What they were running out of were experienced pilots. So pilots were given enough training to fly to a target and crash into it. They used old biplanes knowing if they mixed them with monoplanes. The ships would be more occupied with the faster monoplanes in a Kamikaze attack.
