Yeah I was digging hard on The last waltz and I'm I'm a kid compared to most of the people that are going to read this comment yeah he died he died right what the hell is shity old Van Morrison doing these days anymore anyways
It's actually ridiculous how amazing and powerful his voice is. It's one thing to sound good on a record album, but what separates van is his ability to sing like that at a live concert. Ridiculous talent
Look at the faces of the Band members when Van starts his Elaine Benes “little kicks.” It looks like they’re saying, “Isn’t this the greatest thing ever?”
Van Morrison has more soul than 99% of the artists today who masquerade as soul/R&B performers. A true original and legend that we should all appreciate. If you don't like Van the man then just don't bother talking to me...
@@frankgreally453 It appears you have been tasting a little bit of that white snow.. Why else would you think something like that, hmm. Better be quiet.
There's something mystical about the horn section at the end, a slow and subtle entry which grows in ecstasy as Van prepares for the greatest exit in rock history.
Saw The Last Waltz at the Granada Theater in Buffalo, NY. Van's performance killed it. The movie theater audience broke into applause at the end of Caravan. Talk about LIVE!
Van Morrison is one of the best singers of all time but unfortunately also a bit of an asshole. You can see this in this video already which is more than 40 years old, but it has only gotten worse.
This is by definition facing your fears, Van Morrison said he struggled with stage fright and you can see his intent to not look at the crowd but he gets out there and does what he has to and made one of the most historic live performances ever!
This is the difference between singing like you don't want to make a mistake, and singing with your heart and your soul and just going for it with every fiber of your being. Only by doing the latter are you going to create something memorable. "Turn up...your RADDIO!"
After so many repeat listens, I can't believe I am still surprised that moment when everyone comes in at the beginning, and it's like, oh! I see everybody's brought their A game, how could they do less ... this experience lives forever.
Just an incredible performance all around. Van Morrison is electric. Robbie's guitar playing is on fire. Levon is just in awe the whole time. The kicks at the end. Thank you, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm. Thank God we still have Garth. Tonight, I'll turn up my Rah-dee-oh and play this. Rest easy, Robbie.
In 1978, I was an 18 yr old kid in the Navy on a submarine on patrol. In those days for some reason we had access to “new releases” . I remember watching this movie and this performance, mesmerized, and to this day, I remember my words said out loud to no one in particular, “who is this man?” As soon as we got back to shore, I bought every record I could get my hands on by “Van the Man” . 40-some years later, I bet I’ve listened to and watched this performance hundreds of times and always feel like it’s the first time I “discovered” Van Morrison.
I was on a submarine on patrol roughly forty years after you were in the Navy, but I had download as much of Van Morrison into my iPod as I could manage before we left. He got me through long hours and isolation and some dark feelings. There’s probably a whole fraternity of military guys that Van has kept going through some tough times.
Well, he signs off key, so I wouldn't call this the greatest performance. You should go look up some of the 1973-1974 live concerts by Van that you can find here on RU-vid.
It wasn't just Van... the whole performance was just amazing.... every musician on the stage that night got into it and contributed to a truly timeless work of musical art.
you got that shit right. This is one of the best performances of all time. i am shocked everytime I listen to The Last Waltz songs. how great the sound recordings are. the detail. boy if at least one song from this performance doesn't move a persons soul. Just wow.
Thisis the night the stars perfectly aligned, the gods smiled, everything came purely and brilliantly together and "The Last Waltz" happened. . A once in a lifetime event.
These days singers do mic drops at the drop of a hat. Given that he'd just finished the best number of the night, as part of a concert featuring several of the most revered and influential artists in rock history and delivered a performance that ranks among the greatest of all time, Van earned that one.
At 76 Van the Man is still going strong today! No one will ever beat the passion he puts into his Voice. I think his performance actually shocked the Band (you can tell by the smiles on their faces)because it was the first time they worked together with little rehearsal. Van deadest his Fame, and it only provides him the vehicle to create more music. Van suffered from Stage Fright and this was his first live performance in 2 years. How such Humble, introverted Human Being can possess such a commanding stage presence is remarkable! This has to be considered the best live performances by major artis on video tape! The kickout by Van is historic.
I have come back to this life affirming clip every couple of weeks for many years. Mainly for Van but also for the rest of The B/band - today though there 's no Robbie with us. Sad but, hey, he did this and I thank him for it.
Robbie Robertson is so in tune with this performance of a Van Morrison classic … RIP Robbie. So sad to witness the standard of music I had growing up , and the throwaway nonsense that gets churned out these days.
just change out some names (like the great Robbie Robertson) in this statement and that's probably something your grandad said (and his grandpa before him).... This music is amazing, BUT there is equally fantastic music out there now, recently created... but how would you know? I'll bet you are not exposed/don't expose yourself to anything current. You thinking there is nothing new and good is a shame. You're wrong and what's worse, you're missing out.
@@lizc6628He’s not wrong though. The standards are much lower now and that’s quite sad. Obviously there is still some good stuff out now but not nearly as much as there used to be.
I can't stop listening to this version, it's great. I also love the looks on Levon and Robbie's faces as Van Morrison just fuckin bowls off stage before the song ends LOL gets me every time!
Van is the Man, he knew what he was doing when he smiled off that stage knowing he had just blowin` the roof off the place and the Band can play just go with it, no problems. Van The Man. And crowd famously called for more.
One story was that Van had to be talked into going onstage to sing this one due to last-minute stage fright. You can't tell by his performance, once he got into it, he was all in! One of the greats. The Band seems very amused by Van's antics. They certainly, and even Van, were not known for extra demonstrations on stage. But Van was feeling it that night.
@@gregscheyd4131 What the hell are you talking about? Van Morisson was known for having serious performance anxiety and stage fright frequently. He had to get dragged on at this gig apparently. Certainly doesnt detract from how brilliant his performance was!
@@gabrielfoskett4262 WELL , JUST FOR THE RECORD , I AM NOT WORTH A DAMN , UNLESS I AM DRINKING ..... IF I AM DRINKING , I CAN DO ALMOST ANYTHING !!!!!!!!!
Nothing get's me pumped up more than this LIVE version of Van the Man performing with THE BAND!! If this doesn't bring you up and out of the doldrums, you must already be dead!
+Douglas James Ive been watching this for a number of years and it has risen me from the dead on numerous occasions . I will now click onto " into the mystic " to complete my most recent resurrection .
Van didn't even want to do this show and he had pretty bad stage fright before he went on. I must say he literally kicked ass and did indeed blow away everyone at this show. Love Van the Man!
You are so right, AJ Rose! I heard the studio version on the radio the other day and it was anemic by comparison. How in sync Van and the boys were! Magic!
He says frig the mic stand I'm letting the Jameson handle this, interrupts the guitar solo with scatting, kicks the air like he's kicking away a rabid dog, and then drops the mic and leaves the stage. Friggin LEGENDARY
does the audience realise just how lucky they were??...... witnessing this once in a life time performance. VAN THE MAN at his awesome best. That soulful voice is just inimitable. The Band outstanding. Absolutely love it.
Love the look on the guitar player's face - living the natural high of music, he's thrilled, and knows he'll remember this moment for the rest of his life
This performance is incredible - it sends shivers down my spine and makes my eyes well up every time, but I've no idea why. It's just so powerful and passionate. It seems to come from a transcendent spiritual place.
Im only 23 and I heard this on CD before watching and didn't know who sang this and I can tell you the way Van looks was the total opposite of what I thought I was gonna see. WHAT A BAD ASS!!!
Wish I could live my life the way Van performed this song...such an epic badass this performance was, and he knew it. Talk about a true original who just didn't give two fcks what anyone thought. The original mic drop. The expressions are priceless. This never gets old.
jasonwheel honestly, i never heard any music from any of these artist, or payed attention to them in the least until i heard neil young and the band - helpless. now i'm hooked on this last waltz concert footage.
Easily one of the greatest performances of Caravan I’ve ever heard… I have loved this show since I was a small child and that love has only grown over time. Seeing Robbie with that giant smile and energy bursting from the seams is downright magical. Thank you for sharing this!
I was wondering WHO IN THE HECK give Van THE man a thumbs down? What the heck? Ur right we just have to send those lost souls "light and love" because they are in the dark to this man's greatness as TRUE artist/musician/poet/spiritualist. peace
I just read that Van was absolutely terrified to go out in front of this large crowd and the only reason he appeared on the stage was because he was physically pushed to get out there. He even went on hiatus earlier in the 70s once the size of his audience began to grow because he felt he simply couldn’t do it. Needless to say, you wouldn’t be able to tell he was nervous if no one had told you. Absolutely incredible.
Best performance of the whole damned concert. Blows me away and makes me get up and do those kicks every time I watch it. If you enjoyed it, you'll love "It's Too Late to Stop Now", Van's 1974 live album.
Im 58 and saw this at The Ziegfeld Theatre at age 13. The smoking section in the balcony was like a live concert with people passing joints down the line. As a teen growing up, New York was such an incredible place in the 70s.
"Turn it up, now, just a one more time, just a one more time, just a one more time ....thank you" ; the fantastic horn section reaches its phenomenal climax, while Van kicks and punches the air to the rhythm before leaving the stage exhilarated and exhausted at the same time, wow!!! I´ve been enjoying this grand music for the last nearly 40 years ...Thanks Van & The Band!!
thomas o'sullivan in what way is it fraudulent? he was popular in SA, my parents listened to him, and thought he was dead till the 90s, when he was found, and performed a concert here. Those parts are all true, and he was definitely an amazing musician. On top of that, it was a brilliant documentary. What part was fraudulent?
Anyone who thinks today's music and performances are good... please watch this great moment in music. An introverted singer-songwriter stealing the show, fronting as a guest, an immortal band. This performance was rehearsed ONCE.
@@justandardprocedure Booze and coke can loosen a person up, true... But can they PERFORM at this level? I understand your cynicism. But I challenge you to drink, snort, and then get up and blow an audience away like this. Let us know it goes. Hopefully, your triumphant performance will be recorded for posterity. Have a great week👍!
@@tdsims1963I wouldn't call it cynicism. It's pretty well established that a LOTA people were snorting that garbage. It wasn't just an 80s thing. From what I have read, most ameris got introduced to it in the mid 70s. Before that I think people could easily just buy amphetamines over the counter. Just like any time the government bans any other substance, it just creates an extremely lucrative black market for even worse drugs
This is the only song that will get my baby to sleep. It has to be this version, currently listening to this whilst the baby is sleeping. The best thing about this is you can never get sick of listening to this. Best. Song. Ever!
