This song is a masterpiece. It talks about The Road to Hell which is getting yourself into debt making you a prisoner to corporations. His breakout song in the USA was, "Fool if You Think it's Over" which was a song to his teenaged sister who was broken hearted over being dumped by a boy.

Chris Rea loves driving but he hates traffic. Finding himself stuck in traffic made him realize that he had made some wrong turns that put him on a bad road: the one everyone else takes. Imagining the ghost of his mother (who died in 1983) approaching the vehicle to warn him that he is on "the road to hell. Great song! Haunting and true

Chris Rea forecasting the 2007/8 credit crunch 18 years before it happened, when everyone was living beyond their means, loading up with credit with many of them having no way of paying it off: "And all the roads jam up with credit, and there's nothing you can do, it's all just bits of paper, flying away from you. Oh, look out world take a good look what comes down here... this ain't no upwardly mobile freeway... this is the road to Hell".

Chris Rea is criminally underrated rated as an artist and guitar player. He has so many incredible songs. Every song on the Road to Hell album is a must listen. His follow up album, Auberge, also has a lot of fantastic songs. If you get a chance, some of his other songs I would HIGHLY recommend include: Auberge, Looking For the Summer, On the Beach (1988 Version), Working On It, You Must Be Evil, Daytona, and Texas.

'The Road To Hell', IMO, is human progress poisoning nature, selling yourself for success at any price, is about running forward, towards the cliff, with a stupid smirk on the face. I loved this Part 1 &2 since the first listening. And there's another song I love by Rea: 'On The Beach', the opening track of the 1986 album of the same title.

Sam was pretty spot on with her interpretation about selling your soul (figuratively) for superficial financial gain. There's always been a North-South economic divide in Britain, but it was particularly pronounced in the '80s, when Thatcher's policies was closing down much of the heavy industry, coal and iron mining etc, in the north. Chris Rea is from the north east of England, and here he's reflecting on the movement of people, breaking up northern communities, moving south for work, subjugating themselves to the rat race of the south east (the "valley of the rich" mentioned in the intro, is the Thames Valley, full of towns, including London, focused on service and financial industries, as opposed to "proper, honest work"). Sitting in stationary traffic, on the M25 (the motorway that surrounds London), he reflects on what his mother would say, if she were alive to see what he had become, and the choices he'd had to make to provide for his family, in the recession-plagued '80s, and if he wasn't losing something more important.

Hi. This song is based around the M1 motorway in England which he describes very well. Everything he says about the road is true. It sounds so meaningful, but it's just about a horrible motorway. He had to do the journey quite often, from north to south and back again. Fantastic though. Love the reactions.

The song is about the London Ring Road, the M25 Motorway, a badly concieved and badly designed relief road which simply cannot handle the amount of traffic, or the roadworks to keep it functioning. Bumper to Bumper stationary traffic causes mood swings, road rage and many many accidents. Simply the definition of 'The Road To Hell'.......The song is that simple.....

Loads of great Chris Rea songs - Looking For The Summer, Stainsby Girls, there's a nice duet with Elton John called 'If You Were Me' which really shows how laid back Chris' voice is in comparison...it gives me images of Chris chilled out in a big armchair while Elton's stood up at the mic putting far more effort in

A very different but still brilliant song from Chris. Chris and Billy Joel have a very similar history. They both tried anything and everything to become famous and make a lot of money quickly.......including Boxing. Both settled on music and became clever song writers and professional performers. Chris was a good looking rooster who aged very quickly, seeming to go from movie star / model looks to homeless street person looks almost over night. To me he wrote the best light rock and pop rock you will ever hear, he sung it well and his guitar is as good as anyone from the light rock genre, he had it all. You will know some of his early work.....used in movies, adds and easy listening radio, but still high quality rock / pop.
