The Space Wolves can be said to be like Odinists; or the fascists who take on the Viking aesthetic. However, with how egalitarian and how much the Leagues aren’t out to be conquering imperialists and their devotion to their Ancestor Cores as gods (but not zealotry), the Leagues could be seen to be the true Vikings.

Other fun fact - old episodes of Dr Who featured an AI core known as WOTAN, which while also being named after Odin is clearly very similar to an Ancestor Core in the 40k setting.

@@tamonk9054 You can have hope in Grimdark and still have it be Grimdark, in fact, in my opinion having hope and then having it be crushed or annuled makes a Grimdark setting more interesting than just constant doom and gloom things are shitty and there is no chance for it to ever get better

The Tau were like that until loud people cried bitter and salty tears that there was an actual good guy faction in 40K and it wasn't their faction. The Leagues will definitely have the same fate. I hope they don't but I never underestimate the power of people's salt

@@tamonk9054 You make a fair point about Grimdark's unique appeal of fighting on without hope, however, and this is entirely my personal opinion, with your own clearly diverging, I do also enjoy when someone fights for hope, thinks it is there, only for it to be crushed by a force greater than themselves, a force they could not hope to beat, crushing the false illusion they had and leaving them to despair as they die I disagree that there cannot be hope in Grimdark without sullying it, I agree that there cannot be continued hope in Grimdark that only doesn't manifest or get dashed because it is ignored, but I do not think hope fundamentally clashes with Grimdark, how it is handled can clash or cooexist, but the concept of hope does not inherently oppose Grimdark

@@tamonk9054 and I dislike having no hope for the sake of no hope. Not only does it make the setting incredibly stale but pointlessly unrealistic. Having hope or the idea of hope that's constantly suppressed by some kind of force or circumstances makes it way more interesting. Hell even the idea of hope is tied to a Chaos God so there's room for it and for interesting storytelling. But that's my personal take. If everything is bad for mere sake of being bad it's uninteresting to a story and universe as a whole.

... when you say "irreligious", I would caution not to misinterpret through a modern and incompatible lens. The sensible-minds of 40K may have discarded authoritarian dogma, but even their most insistent contrarians are deeply "spiritual", by our standards. The connections we deem as modern pseudoscience... are genuine-science in 40K. Don't think for a second that Guilliman isn't aware of how his soul was cast. Angel or Demon... he has an intimate knowledge of "architecture and architects" far beyond Humanity's limited conception. A knowledge that must be a companion to any species that transcends... or attempts to transcend within the 40K Universe.

Lion might do well but he would probably have been a bad pick ultimately being too militant which wasn’t something the imperium had issues with, I think the religious side would have been handled tactfully enough however. The 2nd primarch whose name I forget would have turned the imperium into a masssive basket ball team Rogal the same thing, but even worse with how taciturn he is, and he may even have tried to brute force the religion out and caused a canon dornian heresy Vulkan may have actually been able to lead the imperium into a more positive empire, however path to destruction is paved with good intentions and he may have ultimately been a bad leader, reducing the production in favor of workers rights and crippling the war effort for example. Leman Russ, I think may have done an okay job, seems like he wouldn’t care about the religious zeal, but the bureaucracy would remain as crippled as ever as he wouldn’t touch it. Corvus corax might have actually given Cawl more resources for primaris but other than that I’m not sure. Jagatai kahn, would show up, take a look around, put on sunglasses and ride into the sunset

100% Agree on the Interex coming back. I had a discussion recently with my buddy about the Interex and they made a interesting point: GW is pumping the Horus Heresy stuff why not add the Interex in to test the waters? If the majority of 40k players like them than GW can come up with some story and have them in regular 40k :P

What would really shake up the lore is if it’s revealed that humanity dipped out of the Milky Way at some point and had colonized the andromeda galaxy. With tech and AI that makes dark age tech look primitive. There’s no way a power imbalance that big would actually be reasonable but it’s still fun to think abt

Eventually it rose up in revolt with the Chaos Cults overwhelming the Imperial garrisons leading to a crusade. Those chaos cultists the Blood Ravens gunned down? That's what became of the Interrex. Those Chaos ships blown up by the G-Crons? That's the Interrex. Those terrorists Gaunt shot down? That's them.

I think it's implied that Demiurg is simply one of the many Leagues who struck out from the Galactic Core, and kept quiet about the true scale of their race and society.

I think the Leagues are ripe to be the true protagonists of the 40k setting but with the proper grimdark flavor; dirty on the outside, almost spotless on the in.

We just don't hear about it because all of them died of system overload

The Votann have the privilege of being iterated to the point they are. Older 40k heads recognize them as the Squats, which were the original 40k dwarf race, which were at the time categorized as an abhuman faction of the Imperium. Now the Squats have been retconned to have been a League of the Kindred, who got cronched pretty bad by some Tyranids and are virtually non-existent. The homeworlds of the OG Squats, especially Necromunda- well, those guys are actually more aligned with the Imperium than the Votann are.

"No realistic point of reference" You know that throughout history the 'good guys' weren't always good to their people right? There is your realistic point of reference. One look at history and you'll see people suffering under the rule of their governments and institutions. As 40k becomes more mainstream (a good thing) it is diluted by casuals who see everything as too dark/horrible and want to project their black and white simplicity onto a world which allows for none. They want the very obvious good guys to fight the very obvious bad guys because they cannot fathom a world where moral ambiguity is the constant state of affairs very much like their own real world circumstance. This over time makes 40k just like every other fantasy movie, novel etc which is precisely why it gained traction because it was _different._ This is the effect of casualisation in where popular titles gain prominence because they're different only to become like every other mainstream title, boring and forgettable.

Having hope in an absolutely fucked up galaxy makes it all the more Grimdark. Not everyone needs to be an evil motherfucker for it to be Grimdark. Having that one spot of hope in an otherwise uncaring galaxy would've made the Grimdark better, because the Noblebright good guys that want the best for everyone can't do shit because if they did anything then they'd be erased by the more ruthless and callous big boys like the Imperium. The best hope for the galaxy becoming a better place are the bastards that would get erased the moment they do anything the others don't like. They're noble, but they can't do jackshit despite their niceness because they have no hope of becoming anything more than that one guy in the middle of nowhere that everyone forgets about but loves to pummel them into the dirt when they do remember. So, following that, if everyone is equally evil, why should you bother getting invested as all you want is for literally everyone to just fucking die? If everyone is evil, you have no one to root for. In that sense, the Squats are the closest to Noblebright outside of the Farsight Enclaves and it's fucking refreshing to see. Sure, they're a selfish lot, but they are a far cry better than anyone in the other factions excluding the Enclaves and are basically the same as the elves. It's not about grimdark or noblebright, it's about having a breath of fresh fucking air and something different from the usual "Hurr Durr, grimdark best, daemonculaba greatest grimdark," because that's not how it goes. I’d rather The Leagues give The Imperium the middle finger and say no, only for The Republic Of Skaven (A satrapy hegemonic empire that’s part of the Imperium) comes in and repairs the Golden Throne.

This could be used to explain as one of the many, many reasons as to why the kin are slowly getting more retarded and grayer in morality, as well as showing that The Imperium’s solution to fixing the Golden throne was to look inside itself this whole time, both figuratively and literally .😅
