In this episode of The Leather Element, Chuck goes over the basic parts and functions of a leather stitch groover. A clean stitch groove instantly elevates our leather projects. It gives us a clear line to follow when punching holes with our chisel, and allows our stitch line to sink down into our leather to avoid snagging. And if you don't feel like stitching, a groove line adds a nice decorative touch for a more finished looking project.

I've always just used a pair of wing dividers, but I always assumed this groover only had a blade attachment. Good to know you can change the heads to different options. Learning something new every day, Chuck!

Great video. I bought a leather kit some time ago but haven't moved forward and one of the reason is that I don't really know the tools. (I have decided to do a local course to get me going.) This video really helped me. Just a suggestion - when mentioning imperial dimensions it would be really helpful to have the conversion on the screen in text to show the metric dimensions. I think this would be more inclusive of an international audience.

One piece of advice for people just getting into leather like I am. DO NOT CHEAP OUT ON THE GROOVER. I’ll admit I bought cheap starting tools off Amazon. And I’ve been able to complete projects and get decent results with everything EXCEPT the groover. Cutting head didn’t like up with the guide when fully seated, dull blade leaving more of a scratched in groove than a nice cut one. It was a nightmare. Trust me, spend just a little extra and get a decent groover.

Can you buy a quality cutting edge replacement? I think that might be worth it when you're getting started instead of buying a whole new groover.

Unfortunately, there's not a Weaver Leather dealer in South Eastern Missouri. Id be buying my leather products from a store rather than off the internet.

Just a question, how do you sharpen a stitch groover?

There's a groover blade and then a flat piece that will just leave a mark without cutting into the leather.

Honestly I pretty much quit using the stitch groover all together. One slip and your project is done and it's too difficult to follow tight radius curves. I just place a light line with wing dividers and follow with pricking irons. If I want a decorative line I have several easier to run tools for that. Also I've found a groove for the purpose of burying the stitch completely unnecessary. Just my methods.

You have to pay attention to what your doing... mind your edge, and remember that leather has different densities as you go along... It is a learning process.

I’m with you brother I hate the freaking stitch Groover OK it’s a love-hate relationship… I actually have tried to sharpen it on the the leather on the piece of wood what do you call that Strop board. Which helps occasionally most times it’s just doll or it gets clogged up hopefully he’ll give us some good tips on sharpening that little demon leather tool… Rock on dude hey good point I never thought about just punching my holes without the groove cause I know I’m gonna mess that up too lol rock on brother

You can also use the Compass thing for just a line you don’t have to have a groove or just use a stitch Gruver for a little line to get a straighter stitch punch… Oh yeah I’ll make Holsters. I’ll do very little stitching anyway but occasionally I do a man bag. Typically I just double cat my stuff

Why not give us 2 arms,one long and one short,people would pay a few cents more so they dont have to or dont know how to cut an arm down.
@Martin-pb7ts

That is an awesome idea! I wonder if you can buy a replacement arm part and then cut that one down.
