Described in the papers of his day as a holy terror and one of the greatest manhunters to ever grace Indian Territory, Bass Reeves served as a deputy U.S. Marshal for over three decades; routinely traveling into no man’s land and returning with wagonloads of prisoners. With over 3,000 arrests and over a dozen kills to his name, Reeves was not only one of the most effective lawmen of the Old West but also one of the most deadly. But who was Bass Reeves really? What kind of man was he? Where’d he come from? How does a mere mortal grow such an amazing mustache? And did he really inspire the Lone Ranger? This is part 2 and the final installment of the Bass Reeves series. Link below for episode 1. Today we cover Reeves’ hunt for Ned Christie, his transition from frontier marshal to town police, and whether Bass truly inspired the Lone Ranger. #history #wildwest #lawman

The more I learn about Ole Bass Reeves the more I am in awe of his life. Life was seriously hard back then, add that your also black and a lawman, makes it even more fascinating. Add to that he had ten children, that in itself to me is mind boggling.

@@edreynolds8721 You bring up a lot of good points, personally I would have been fascinated with Bass Reeves history. Yes, he was a badass with his background and his 3000 arrests. Going back to shows like Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc. Reeves would have been an icon in the western films a long time ago. On top of that a real-life character. The good news is that he is deservedly being acknowledged and heralded. Thanks for the reply.

As a long retired peace officer, and a third generation one, I regarded Bass Reeves as a genuine asset to us all in the profession. they did a low low budget movie on bass reeves called "hell on the border" but there was one outstanding scene where the badman n his gang bass reeves was after crossed paths with frank n jesse james n also a lady.. they were digging a grave.. don't know who the lady's character was portraying but she was scary bad! her interaction was brief but an edge of your seat highlight.. they need to do a very expansive quality story for bass reeves.. no soap box series.. a deserving tribute for the best lawman ever!

Why all the apologies for speaking about the issue of race. It's completely relevant and historically true. One of the consequences of the reluctance to speak on the real history of race in our country hurts us as a whole and protects fragile minded people who need to be informed. To speak on the relevant issue is not the same as inappropriately shoving the issue on people. Thanks for the podcast very interesting.

I’m a Potawatomi tribal member and aficionado of western history. Really enjoyed hearing about Bass Reeves’ gun fight in Potawatomi County but for the record the Potawatomi pronounce it “Pot a WAT omee” not Potawa TOE me. Even that is a matter of speculation though because time alters vowel sounds and syllabic emphasis. What I do know is that Bass Reeves was a bad ass dude who was respected as a Black man when that wasn’t the norm. Thanks for an entertaining and interesting video.

When mentioning about Bass's probable 500 yard shot it brings to mind what may be the greatest shot ever taken. Billy Dixon shot an Indian warrior off his horse at which later was determined to be 1,538 yards using a Sharpe's rifle. This was done in 1874 and just imagine how difficult it was to take someone off his horse from that range back in the day.

You apologizing for talking about race. You assuring folk you're not going woke. Please... This is america you can't talk about america and not talk about race. FACT: Bass Reeves was one of the bravest, toughest, smartest and most accomplished lawmen in the history of this country. BUT...he was, in spite of everything, a BLACK man in america. He never was given the positions his accomplishments merited. He never served on a force or in a unit where the leader of that unit was more accomplished than him. And yet he knew he would never get that position. FUN FACT: in the year Bass Reeves died, 1910, one Jack Johnson, black man. having gone to Australia [in 1908] after chasing, and shaming the current white champ all over the world got him into a boxing ring. Where he beat him all over the place, met one Jim Jefferies, the former undefeated white champion of the world in Reno, Nevada for the world Heavy weight boxing title. Jack Johnson beat the brakes off of Jefferies, [THE GREAT WHITE HOPE] that very day race riots took place all over america. Thousands of people died. So...don't apologize about the race angle. ...it simply is what it is, and always has been. Nice show by the way.

I had a grandfather I never met killed in the line of duty was an elected lawman and coal miner couldn't read or write is in the fallen lawmen memorial in DC and the stories heard from different sources about what he did when confronted with life death situations sounds like a movie character but I believe when faced with that confidence and adrenaline goes a long way on taking a chance to stay alive I can believe what Marshall reeves and my grandfather is storied to have done was mostly true those were hard men

Like to see a movie made of this legendary law man, if they (Hollywood) could just stay to his achievements and leave the polish off, This man is incredible, After reading my Great Great grandfather diary of how it was, Reconstruction after the Civil War soldiers or law man it had additional risk, Not uncommon to find a Sherrif and deputy ambush by who knows by whom, or swinging from a tree limb. after the Civil War men made the way back up north to the Union States, some accounts have stated 4000 men were Bush wack, like Johnny Cash sings the ( 🎶 Gun fighters' last ballet🎵 ), it's was a very hard time.

Lone Ranger definitely has no evidence he was inspired by BASS REEVES. Just like Hang Em’ High definitely doesn’t have a shred of evidence that it was inspired by BASS REEVES. BUT… Tell me when you watched it when you finally watch Hang Em’ High which I highly Recommend you do. Tell me you don’t see very close similarities?????

Can no for certain but i wouldn't clarify jim as a liar perse. He told stories and tall tails. But lets keep it in perspective. He knew when to draw down and when to talk. Telling stories and entertaining those that can easily be enemies was a skill. Do you want to hear the truthful telling of 1 group massacres another group? Or something more spicy with some jokes? I imagine "i killed about 3 naitves in single combat with my knife vs i was surrounded and cornered but 25 with only ny knife?" The whole put of the stories is to entertain not to make someone tense., especially to those that may put a arrow in you while you slept.

I was being a little sarcastic. Bridger was very well known for spinning tall tales but he told the truth when it mattered. He usually reserved the lies for pilgrims and them that was too hardheaded to accept the truth.
