Donald Triplett - the first person to be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder - died last week at the age of 89. Triplett had an enormous influence on the treatment and study of autism. Journalists Caren Zucker and John Donvan produced a documentary about Triplett's life and joined CBS News to discuss his legacy.

Mr. Triplett, you were not the guinea pig that was experimented on. You were the drill that burst the dam open and began an increasing deluge of neurodiversity that has now flooded the world. Thank you and kudos for that, and thank you FAR more for enduring everything you had to endure so that I and literally millions of others in our community would never have to. Rest in peace, you trailblazer.

As an autistic person, I feel like I owe everything to this guy, because of it wasn't for his life and legacy as the first diagnosed autistic person, we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are today with a slowly more accepting and understanding world finally appearing before us

Im autistic I love seeing him in a different key. He had quite a sense of humor and was very funny in parts of the show in a different key.

I had a community that rolled with my differences and it helped me to be extremely successful in many aspects of life. No one ever knew why i was so eccentric but autism is the only thing that makes sense now that I'm an adult. I've learned alot by not being really treated different until I left my home town. I think this is extremely important just like this is showing.

My youngest daughter is nonverbal autistic I will never give up on her she has lots of love and she is a smart girl, she is a quick leaner, loves playing with sister I am proud of her

Anyone else diagnosed notice that when you talk to people the light from their eyes seem to go out? Could this be something else? It's awful.

I've heard that people can immediately tell someone is autistic when they meet us, they just don't KNOW it. And because of that they immediately think we are different from them, even if we we are doing nothing wrong. I don't know if this is true, but maybe it's because of that.

I don’t think that happened to me, but I do get what you mean when people look at you weird or give you that flustered look in their face. Then you just start to become monotone and self conscious. Even when you try to mask, they still see that there’s something wrong with you. I hate it so much, I want to be normal so bad

I am a parent of autistic child, I moved back to USA when I discovered my daughter has autism 11 years ago when she was 5. Thank God she is billion times better now. Thanks Donald Triplett for that, I hope we will find freedom from that one day. God bless you all.

@handleykp You are normal You just look at things differently. The key here is just be who you are, don't try to hide who you are from anyone because who you are is what make you unique. You don't need to please anyone but your self. Enjoy life ok.
