Fabulous actress. A beauty and look how she has aged, she still looks beautiful because she is not VAIN like all the other vain beauties.

Fun Hollywood history story! (Excerpt from a 1997 interview with director Lewis Allen) “Do you know who the lady in the shop is? Moyna Macgill, the mother of Angela Lansbury. Moyna was a very famous English actress, and when the war came along, she came out to Hollywood with her two sons and her daughter, Angela. I later gave Angela a part in a picture because Moyna said, "Oh, I wish you'd give her a job." I was doing Our Hearts Were Young and Gay [1944], and so I said, "Send her in," and I hired Angela to play in Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. About three days later, here the picture started, George Cukor called me, and he "Have you just hired a girl called Angela Lansbury?" I said. "We haven't started yet, but she's going to be working for me, yes, George. He said, "Well, we're making tests for Gaslight, and I'm testing her she's any good, will you let her go?" The following day be called me and said, "I've just looked at the test, and it's very ged. We want to hire her, but you've got to let her go." So I let her go, and you know the rest she got an Oscar nomination for that, and that was the beginning of her career.”

Sounds far more English here. She modulates (perhaps unknowingly) when she’s speaking to an English interviewer. Her charm was transatlantic for sure. What a star.

It's from Paul Merton's Birth of Hollywood. No, Ms. Lansbury only appeared in one segment.

Did anyone else notice how she made her voice much more British when talking with the British interviewer? It must be a subconcious thing. I know it is how she spoke growing up but in her American interviews her accent is still British - but much less so.

Very astute comment. Linguistically happens a lot that people revert to the accent related to the situation. It is common amongst Irish living in UK that when speaking about their childhood or with relatives from the "homeland" they tend to have more of a lilt when speaking. Great you noticed.

I’ve got a friend who lives in Australia. When he comes back to the UK he sounds Australian but it he soon loses it & reverts back to his British accent.
