As brought to my attention there are grammatical mistakes within this video. I should've taken my time more with this video and looked it over better. I got frustrated due to some technical issues that kept reoccurring while making this, but even that is no excuse. The grammar within the video may not be 100% correct on the slides, but the information within this video is.
So TJ I would like to know what's up pertaining to this: Is the B5244T5 aka 4t5 2.4 better (and how so) than the B5254T4 2.5 in the R's that has more stock Horse@296? Not talking sht bud, just seriously curious. Send me any link, lead or info you can pertaining would be greatly appreciated.
@@adammacpherson1579 the reasons why the 4t5 is the best Volvo 5 cylinder for modding is all covered in this video. I don’t have links just saved off hand but you can research and look up the engine specs online, read up on the forums, and get information from various different places. The only reason why the 4t4 R engine makes more power from factory is because it comes with larger injectors from factory and a more aggressive tune that’s it. The 4t5 uses the same exact turbo, cylinder head, cams, exhaust manifold, stroke, crank, etc as the 4t4. They’re literally brother and sister engines. The differences lie in the block and pistons. The 4t4 R engine has a 2.5l block giving it a 83mm bore making the block weak and prone to cracking were as the 4t5 uses a 81mm bore (same as the 2.3l) making the block much stronger and able to handle more power. So the 4t5 is identical to the R engine but has smaller injectors from factory, a stronger 81mm bore block, smaller pistons of course due to the thicker cylinder walls, and most 4t5s use a oil pan with no oil level sensor although some European variants use the same oil pan as the R with the oil level sensor.
@@T5_T-Rell Thanx man! actually a bit of what you stated here was not in the vid but exactly what I wanted to know! I figured the block would be stronger if the difference was in bore but did not know if it was.
@@T5_T-Rell I have a modded 4T5 myself (K24 hybrid turbo, 650 cc ev14, full bolt ons), but I was not aware of the lack of an oil level sensor. Does that mean a CEL will not be triggered if I suddenly loose oil for whatever reason? Thinking I might need to set up an oil pressure gauge.
@@SD-uj5kk yes this is exactly what happened to my OG 4t3 in my s60 T5. I checked the pcv system before buying the car and it passsed the glove test, regardless 3 months into ownership I did a bunch of general maintenance: spark plugs, coil packs, fuel filter, and pcv system. I checked the pcv system after completing the job and it passed a glove test yet again. Anyway 2-1/2 weeks later as I’m driving home from work the car blows the intake cam seal straight off the head and the car gets a massive oil leak. There was no smoke and no warning lights on the dash. The engine started knocking and then the CEL came on for knock sensor after it was already too late. I highly recommend a oil pressure gauge since most 4t5s don’t have a oil level gauge like the R.
No doubt the cost will probably go up due to this video but it’s already one of the most expensive if not the most expensive Volvo 5 cylinder on the market today. The Volvo community has already drove up the prices like crazy. Also just because it’s the best factory 5 cylinder doesn’t mean it’s the most cost effective option especially when it comes to making power.
@@T5_T-Rell if you only knew the insanity here in Sweden. You can buy 900dollar rwd volvo from the 80-90s and do some mods for 500dollars and then you can sell it for 4000 dollars
@@motokid1492 it's pretty much same here in Finland too. For example, my father bought recently 940 classic sedan with no MOT for 1500 euros. Then he got it painted little bit and got MOT for it and sold for 4500 euros.
Just checked used priced: Cheapest S60 I could find in my country, 406,000km, scratches all over, chewed up seats... 5,100 EUR... For 5,500 I can get a mint condition 2010 e60 530i or a bunch of other simillarly classed cars...
That and the SAAB B204 / B234 engines. Can be tuned to 400bhp with no engine mods at all. just add bigger turbos and injectors. Super reliable too. One of mine has been on a 360bhp tune for 150,000 miles so far.
I actually really like the fact that not too many people know about the capability of those B52*4T engines. Here in germany, my 855 with a fairly modified B5254T (stock internals) is just some big old station wagon from the 90's. - No trouble with the police - BMW, Mercedes or VW GTI Fanboys don't see me as a threat on every stoplight - No envy from other drivers ... until I let the moose loose. Couldn't be any better
I am honestly surprised to see someone from germany appreciate and recognize the capabilities of swedish car's, since you have audi's, bmw's, mercedez and such. Though i know another from germany who loves volvo's too.
@@Starnerdz My '96 850 AWD makes it really easy for me to appreciate Volvo. Based on the price and how it is equipped it was a competitor to Mercedes Benz E-Class, BMW 5-series and Audi 100 / A6. None of those before mentioned have such a superiour overall longtime quality. The only thing not working on my daily driver Volvo is the AWD and that's because it was not designed to handle the added amount of torque, due to the engine mods. Others than that it just runs and runs and runs. And boy, does it ever run 😈. No electrical issues, no rust, just the usual bushings, brakes, timing belt, etc. I wouldn't know what there is not to appreciate about it, besides the high fuel consumption maybe. I could very easily buy a brand new car in a comparable size and class but I don't want to. Theres simply no need for it. Cheers from germany
Downpipe, 200 cell cat, simons muffler, 3 inch diameter all the way As a more "under the radar" alternative I also have a 2,5 inch exhaust with simons mufflers left and right
here in Scandinavia, they were given the respect they deserve. people tune the shit out of them here. meet up and have parties on the roads between the borders of Sweden and Norway. happens around summer all the time every year.
3 years ago I had a taxi ride in S60. At the time I didn't even had a drivers license but I knew that I would buy a volvo as my first car. So I asked that guy some questions about his 2009 volvo. He said he bought it for 7k eu and that this engine makes 260hp stock. He did some pulls and I was shocked. Only after 3 years I realized how lucky I was to have a ride in that car
That is pretty much how I feel (yes I am a swede) but I also understand it. Over here in sweden seeing for example a nissan s13 or an evo you react with (damn that's niice!) but over in japan I can imagine it's pretty much like seeing a volvo or a saab just another one on the road might have chosen bad examples but you know what I mean.
Over here we don't have cheap junkyard LS engines, they are actually quite expensive. Volvo 5s though, they are everywhere and are swapped inte many type of cars cars, and tuned to the moon an back. Lots of tuning parts are available cheaply aswell.
These engines are well known in Europe, they ended up in the Focus ST because they were so good! I've had four Volvo cars now, all five cylinders and a mix of petrol and diesels, the one that impressed me the most was the 2ltr 20v engine; it was a high revving powerhouse in an old man's car.
@@khalildalak8176 never blew up. Abused it like crazy with lots of rev limit with pops and bangs. Drove it once with a massive coolant leak. Sold it after about a year, it still runs now 2 years later.
This engine is also in the Ford Focus RS MK2 as well, which in the UK is considered to be one of the most sought after cars by collectors. Owners have extracted as much as 800 hp, and even breaking the 1000hp barrier.
It's a thing in Sweden to swap these engines into an F/R configuration in a volvo 240/740/940. Another great engine is the Saab B234. Mainly because it is so cheap vs its power. It's like a 2.3 liter SR20 for 100-500 bucks
I never had any heat problems with the engine of my volvo s60 T5 / 260 hp. But it ist is not tuned anyway and I just have it for one Winter. This Winter here in Germany was a bit colder than the last years. At 255 km/h for some minutes the water temperature did not change a degree. But I will check it in the summer and i think you are right because some parts in the engine can get really hot, eventuell in the water is at normal temperature. Other important things to do: Always check the oil and don't run the engine too fast when it is cold because that can kill every turbo.
Nah. The 240s have the 4Cyl Redblocks ranging from the B20 to the B230. They had turbo variants of the B21, B23, and B230 as well. These are also legendary engines in their own right and can make big power if you know what you are doing
@@volvolovers2005 It was so sad... the engine was like new... only 351k Km. But she had many electrical problems. She was Almost full optionals... Optima best car i’ve ever had love it
My s60 2001 is still running fine with 365000km on it. Got it from my father who bought the v60 hybrid. Biggest cost for it was a new exhaust which costed 140€. Awesome car and awesome Sound. Love it and planing some tuning on it soon.
Yes I live in America and this video was more so talking about how it is in America at least. 5 cylinder Volvo’s in general are somewhat known in the tuning world but they’re definitely not modified or respected nearly as much here as they are in Europe. In fact modified Volvo’s are pretty rare to see. Where as in America seeing a mustang, camaro, Nissan 350z, BMW 335i, Subaru BRZ or whatever else is pretty common. This engine is not really known about in America at all other than by hardcore Volvo enthusiasts.
I had a 1987 Volvo 760 TURBO with the Garret t3 Turbo from the factory. My friend adjusted the wastegate and it was pretty fast. Iron block 4 cylinder with rear wheel drive made it fun to drive. Total sleeper.
I have a V70 Glt N/A.. practical and fun to drive.. no rust only scratched bumpers but I will have them repainted.. changed all the hoses and the PCV system and gave it an all filter change which the last owner did not do 😂 Have had it since last September.. found a dark marble interior trim which Im going to put in soon
Last Volvo I owned was a 1995 850 Turbo Limited Edition - pearl white in 2003. Fun and fast car. Loved the feel and sportiness. Boosted the turbo was all I did.
I used to own a 07 v50... T5, 6sp, awd... bone stock... I used to go out hunting STIs with it all the time... that car was a total badass!!! Also, had a friend that owned an old 240gt... Volvo is a totally underrated marque... love those cars and I take a lot of flack for it, too... but I know... I know!
I have a 2006 Volvo XC70, no rust at all, new suspension,3” Stainless Snabb catless downpipe, 3” 304 Stainless pipe with Borla resonator and racing muffler, Elevate tune, IPD strut bar solid mounts, poly engine mount, silicone hoses, Snabb turbo pipe, Simota cold air intake. Just had the oil pan cleaned out -port was blocked with years of sludge, new PCV box system & hoses. Next on the agenda: Do88 aluminum Intercooler & radiator, new turbo, Elevate front & rear sway bars, IPD rear adjustable control bars. The list never ends.
He's talking about a specific engine, B5244T5. The Modular Engine family consists of several different 5 cylinder engines, the B5244T5 is the strongest from the factory. It could probably make 650whp reliably with a good EMS and E85 tune.
Thanks for the vid..just great..!!...I wanted to say that in 1998 ,I bought my'dream' daily at the time..,the VOLVO V40 T4 (4cyl/1.9l Turbo/FWD 5 manual/ 200 HP stock/a few years ago ,I took the engine out at168.000 kms and rebuilt it with new light racing parts and Turbo, chassis parts with a new suspension(SACHS) and brakes(endless) ,the rear hatch was rebuilt in fiber as well as the hood and much more goodies(weight today 1090 kg/for 345 HP/488 NM...it"s my dream sleeper but it was never 'ridiculous' stock..!!..at 50 today I give headaches too younger 'bimmer' guys and I love it.

Oof, well here in sweden they're not rare at all, Even I got one. And I got it for $2000 USD aswell.. And I must say I love it ;D The volvo parts here in sweden is cheap as hell aswell
Just saying but $2,000usd is not at all cheap when it comes to these Volvo engines. And in fact that’s probably the most I can say I’ve heard someone pay for a 4t5 or any of these older Volvo 5 cylinders. You can get a 4t3 with say 130,000 miles for $700 or less where as a 4t5 will cost $1,200-$1,500. But yes In America they are rare and expensive. I’ve already noticed from being on the world wide Volvo pages that Europe got way more facelifted p2s than America so s60 T5s and V70 T5s that came from the factory with this engine are much more common over there.
@@streeatbeat you must live in country outside the U.S. because $4.5k will get you an entire Volvo s60 T5 the engines alone (4t5) generally cost $800-$1.5k depending on mileage, year, and overall condition of the engine. I've seen plenty listed for these prices over the past 2 years on various volvo pages on facebook, ebay, and "buyusedengine.com"
I'm a BMW guy and i knew this engine when i was searching the difference between S60 T5 and S60R. But thanks for the in-depth performance capabilities of these things
I drove one before. '05 S60R 2.4T stage 2 and this '14 M3 was tailgating me. I gave the M3 to pass and let him run. A few minutes later I ran 200kmh and bumped to him again. The M3 was shocked and try to run 240 but no shit I'm still behind him. Then he let me pass with his thumbs up. I just smiled and open the ways for both of us.
Is that why there’s no other videos talking about this specific engine no articles and barely any documented builds using this engine they are way under rated when compared to other engines. If you look up just about any other engine in the world of cars and modifying them they’ll be plenty of videos, articles, and documented builds using said engine. If we were to talk about the Chevy LS engine, Nissan RB26, Toyota 2jz, Mazda 13b, Nissan sr20, Ford coyote, Bmw S54, Bmw N54, Toyota 1jz, VW Vr6 and so on there’s plenty of coverage on these engines. The same can’t be said on this engine and based on how this video is performing that holds true.
@@T5_T-Rell I don't know where you are living, everyone knows about these here in Europe, it's one of the most talked about things in the Volvo tuning community and they certainly get the recognition that they deserve, until they crack a cylinder wall or bend a rod

That’d be like me saying “everyone knows about the 4.6l Ford v8.” Obviously a ton of people in my country knows about it since it’s a Ford and it originated in my country that doesn’t make it popular worldwide. If the 4t5 was popular worldwide there would be multiple videos covering this engine and multiple articles. Like I mentioned before there plenty of good engines out there and they’re well known world wide and it shows the same can’t be said for this engine.
@@JamesCherrill ik the difference between N and RN I’m by no means new to Volvo’s or modifying them. Not all RN swaps use this specific engine. And yes there is just a handful if I wanted to find information, see videos, or look at other peoples setups for any of the other engines I named there’s a plethora of videos, forum posts, and articles going over the engines the same can’t be said for this engine. Also an engine being popular among Volvo enthusiasts mean nothing I’m referring to popular as a whole within the car community. @@jaahasjaahas8729 the base engine is the same. They bored it out to 2.5 and sleeved it. The early debate thought the RS used the same engine as the S60R, as both had 2.5 displacement. But later on, it was confirmed that this 2.4 was taken, and bored out to 2.5 as the thicker walls it had gave more option to ford's engineers in modding it out
@@jaahasjaahas8729 The RS block is more akin to the S60R block apparently but being RNC based, they were both machined differently in the factory than the RN gen engines. Being more similar to RNC in which, RNC engines are fitted into Ford Global C1 platforms (Mazda 3, focus, Fiesta, s40/v50/c30). So you're right when saying the block is similar to the RNC found in s40/v50/c30. But a guy who said he worked for volvo engine development wrote that the internals are more RN than RNC. That's where the debate starts tho. BTW, I also thought the RS engine was truly RNC gen engine and the same as the s40/v50 but as pointed out, it's actually more RN and modded to be RNC A
Great vid! Own a B5244T5 in a '07 V70 T5 260hp for a year now, and love it! One question, what about the ‘preventive oil pressure recover measurements? Needed or not at this engine? I hear different stories, even at Volvo specialists
Yeah, i had a v70 t5 2002 too, last yeah just for a few month, it had about 350k kilometers down and had more like 200-220hp but the sound and feeling was really great :)
It is a legend in the making. Give it 10 more years. I have 2 of those (kind of): One is my everyday V70 non-turbo which still sounds really nice and is approaching 500k km (>300k miles) and the other is the sunday-morning-cruise C70 turbo with just 200k km (160k miles). Also, you can use any 5-cylinder volvo block to produce lots of hp, they are basically all the same. Bolt on a big turbo, modify injectors and engine management and off you go!
I have an xc70 2005 with the 2.5l version of the same engine -B5254T2. Firstly the 5 cylinder gives such smooth power delivery from low revs to about 5. Also highly tunable and well though out blocks. My 300k engine had the turbo finally die. So it was replaced with a k24. Some ECU work to let the engine breathe more, and my days do you feel the difference. Been driving with a bigger turbo for well over 3 years and about 40k miles, daily, without a problem. Nice cars too. Have had many opportunities to buy a much newer car, but somehow like the volvo too much.
Back when volvo made good engines and good cars. Theyve turned into a puppet ever since they were bought by chinese company geely. Now all you get is four cylinder hybrids.
My daily driver is volvo v70 2.5 T AWD Momentum 2005 and I love that car it feels amazing like after 17 years its still a great car. Volvo needs more attention but maybe its better that nobody knows how good they really are.
