At FilmSpeak, we're BIG James Bond fans and so it's about time we shed some light on The Legendary James Bond Movie Everyone Forgot...Tomorrow Never Dies in a video essay!
Tomorrow never dies is the eighteenth Bond film in the franchise and the second James Bond movie for Pierce Brosnan. Directed by Roger Spottiswoode, Tomorrow Never Dies 007 also stars Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Pryce, Teri Hatcher, and Judi Dench. Media mogul Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) wants his news empire to reach every country on the globe, but the Chinese government will not allow him to broadcast there. Carver doesn't take no for an answer and plans to use his media empire to fuel flames of war between the Western world and China. Thankfully, James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) is on to the insane news tycoon and travels to China to stop him with the help of Chinese secret agent Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh). While audiences may remember and revere Pierce Brosnan's first Bond movie Goldeneye, the sequel to his explosive debut often gets forgotten. Tomorrow Never Dies is arguably the most underrated and overlooked James Bond movie and has only scarily gotten more relevant with age. If it's been years since you watched the Tomorrow Never Dies movie or if you've never seen the second Pierce Brosnan James Bond movie, it's worth a revisit. Griffin (@griffschiller) explores and analyzes the legendary James Bond Movie Everyone Forgot and makes a case in this James Bond video essay for why Tomorrow Never Dies is an underrated James Bond movie!

My thoughts are keep your political views to yourself. I don't need to know about your hatred towards the right or conservative media. We had an entire summer of burning churches, violent riots, killings. Meanwhile the mainstream media lying headlines read "peaceful protests" as a building was literally burning and looters were robbing stores. So keep your politics to yourself.

A bit cartoonish for my liking. The supposedly redeeming feminist character was reduced to a cart-wheel spinning anime character incapable of original thought. Glad things moved on really.

Wonderful video essay. Tomorrow Never Dies was so ahead of its time, especially when you look at the global news and social media in present day. The film has aged like a fine wine and even beat Mission: Impossible Fallout to the punch with Halo jumping and a remotely operated BMW.

My all time favorite James Bond scene is when he escapes after months of imprisonment and walks into a high class hotel looking like a bum with his unkempt hair and beard. However protrudes confidence and charm despite his current condition. He then gets a fancy room, cleans himself up and walks out of the hotel with a new haircut, a shave, and a new suit. That to me is James Bond.

I think it's party because people mistakenly think very serious characters are more realistic, but being very serious and lacking a sense of humor is one of the biggest things I believe make fictional characters less like real people. @JorgeObando

Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan ARE James Bond as Ian Fleming imagined him; and no other actor enjoyed being James Bond more than Pierce Brosnan. He is the only one who never complained about filming workload, paychecks, Bond’s personality, and so on. Do the homework and compare Brosnan’s movies with Craig’s era: even the light is bluer (sadder) in the latter (Skyfall and its sequels). Of course, in Craig’s movies you get 500% more stunts, but James Bond is about glamour, intelligence, and passion for what he does while saving the world. It is not about a man’s struggle with midlife crisis and, on top of that, save the world, if you don’t mind, please, Mr. Bond?

I said I think Bond is actually ahead of his time, story wise and action sequences. They were all like no just another Bond film. I said do you see the way the world is changing. Maybe it was just me. In my Jr. and Sr. year of H.S. I spent half the day working on computers. This is going to age me but I don't care. I graduated in 1987. I was the top student two years in a row on those ancient machines. It came with perks though. If the teacher left the class everyone knew I was in charge. It also came with a recommendation to work at the IRS on the weekends while still going to school. I digress, I love this movie and wish more people would appreciate it what it accomplished. Peace

@@FilmSpeak I grew on Brosnan films. He was THE Bond for me, followed by Moore in my childhood, I didn't understood Dalton for example, and Connery's looked dated. Since then my tastes have shifted completely, Dalton and Connery are the Bonds for me now, so are their film tenures I consider the best (add OHMSS, CR and scenes from other Craig's for perfect cocktail). Still, the sentimentals is still there. Brosnan surely looks the part. And his films are FUN. For kid me, DAD was great, and I was later surprised by the amount of hate it gets. The line "There are no more enemies since the cold war ended" is kinda laughable after the War on Terror, but you remember the news in the 90s? Excellent essay. I've personally revisited this film and I can firmly say this is the definitive Brosnan Bond film. I love Goldeneye but that film was more of a return to the franchise which Pierce anchored. You're intro spoke on that. TND is saying this what a Brosnan film is. Paris death scene is still one of the strongest Bond scenes IMHO of the entire franchise and Pierce nails it.

I think M's statement about Carver's death on his yacht was a reference to Robert Maxwell.

I always liked TND precisely because even back then you could see where the whole '24 hour news' business model was heading; even good ole Aunty Beeb got sucked into it. It has created monsters; not Elliot Carver's (yet?) but it lead to 'fake news', alternative truth' and rampant egotism in the media mainly from one source: Murdoch.

Tomorrow Never Dies is Pierce Brosnan's answer to You Only Live Twice and The Spy Who Loved Me. What do the three James Bond films have in common are 007 is dressed in a Royal Navy Commander uniform, a state of the art vehicle such as Little Nellie, Lotus Esprit S1 and BMW 750, and an awesome villain's lair such as Blofeld's hollowed out volcano, the Liparus supertanker and Carver's stealth ship.

What I found funny about James Bond crashing his car from the top of a parking garage; the car smashed right into the office of a car insurance company. Of course it was product placement. Still a great visual gag, though. It got me as a 12 year old when I first saw the movie and it will continue to get me.

I’m always undecided as to whether I prefer goldeneye or tomorrow never dies; GE has a fantastic central connection between bond and trevelyan that’s very unique to the film, so I feel it’s more engaging dramatically, but I also never get bored for a single second in TND. Great video!

This was an AWESOME vid! TND is definitely an underrated Bond film, and a terrific entry. I LOVE that you fell in love with Bond through the TND video game, as that's a Bond game that is also VERY underrated Carver has always been one of my personal FAVORITE Bond villains, as his plan for manipulation of the media was genius (and the perfect plan in a post-Cold War world). That was in 1997, YEARS before social media became a thing, and his plot is even more relevant today

Easily my favorite Brosnan-era movie. The bmw car chase! Dynamic and incredibly fun. The bike chase! Original and exciting stunt extravaganza, with the coolest Bond girl. Pierce at his SMOOTHEST under pressure, whether it’s machine gun fire or a past lover. The modern suave professional just doing his job. The media controlling villain mixed with stealth technology is almost proper science fiction. For me, this movie has to be considered as one of the best implementations of the Bond formula.

A couple of things I like * The on-screen relationship between M and Admiral Roebuck is, I'm sure, better because Judi Dench and the late Geoffrey Palmer were also at the time playing joint leads on sitcom As Time Goes By, and he was also in Mrs Brown with her the same year as TND. * I also love M's barb at the Russian guy of "Can't you people keep *anything* locked up?" which I've always assumed is a reference to the sheer number of "ex-Soviet nuke falls into the wrong hands" plots going round in the 90s. * Vincent Schiavelli is great, and is I think the only reason why that goofy scene coming straight after Paris' death isn't awful - he's got the charisma to pull it off. * There are *so* many later-to-be-famous actors playing sailors on the Royal Navy scenes. Hugh Bonneville, Jullian Rhind-Tutt, Gerard Butler... * M's obituary of Carver refers to him falling off his yacht, which was the *other* media mogul of the era, Robert Maxwell

I also imagine despite it not being as good as goldeneye making a lot of money. Kinda the same way TDKR made more than TDK simply because of the latter being so beloved.

Goldeneye is objectively more polished but Tomorrow never dies is so much juicier! a villain that (unfortunately) aged really well, amazing action pieces with great practical stunts, and an emotional thread that connects back to justify his mantra in Goldeneye of "i stay alone to stay alive". Paris's death proves his mantra right and Brosnan excels at playing the effective cold killer with repressed emotion. It sets up how women are a coping mechanism for him to avoid processing trauma. Plus this movie moves relationships forward from Goldeneye, showing Moneypenny as Bond's wingwoman (not only an office flirtation) and making M and Bond allies (beyond the contentious boss-agent dynamic). p.s. Arnold is so good you could watch the movies without dialogue and he will still guide you along the emotional narrative in music

Absolutely! It’s just a perfect follow up and date I say did a better job advancing the series into the 21st Century. Goldeneye said good bye, TND said hello. Also yeah, Arnold is incredible
