I got laughed at on a boxing thread for bringing up Meldrick Taylor and Edwin Rosario in conversation about Chavez Sr and Arguello`s opposition, do you think they were right? I brought up Taylor`s skill and speed and how Chavez did well in dealing with that in their classic bout, I also mentioned that Rosario was very good defensively, but I got laughed at.

His punches look so slow and floaty but they have so much bodyweight and leverage behind them. Gotta love Mexican power punchers.

One of the greatest in the sport of all time. He reached 62 and 0 with only 3 wins by decision ! Think about that he KOd and beat guys so bad they quit for 59 of his first 62 fights! Stunning punching power from a Bantam weight. He retired with 89W 13L 3D and 79 KOs. Ruben Olivares has a special place my boxing heart along with Manuel Ortiz, Jesus Pimentel, Vicente Saldivar and Solomon Garcia. The Old guys that fought to get title shots in and OUT of the ring. Many greats that have come out of Mexico, Ruben Olivares is certainly in my top 10 all time.

I know, I know, Chavez, Sanchez, Zarate, Ricardo Lopez, Marquez, Barrera, Canto, and the list goes on and on and on........... but in my 50 years of following boxing, there has been no body, no body more beloved and revered than the unforgettable, charismatic, and superb RUBEN OLIVARES. Campeon, on behalf of all of us that saw you in your prime, we salute you. SALUD!.

I think Ruben Olivares is the real GOAT of Mexican boxing, not Chavez. Yes, Chavez perhaps has more wins against Hall of Famers but Olivares has overall better resume. He fought and became the king of the toughest era in bantamweight history. Going 69-2-1 against legendary bantamweights, Imagine that! You can forget about Olivares' featherweight campaign and the guy is still great. You can't do that with Chavez. Chavez still needs his multiple divisions championship and 89-0 to cement his legacy. Olivares' Bantamweight campaign is more than enough for him.

@@fhdbsgs3964 laugh all you want but that's a FACT. Olivares bantamweight resume alone is enough for him to be recognized as the Mexican GOAT. Can you say it to Chavez's super featherweight-lightweight resume? NO! Plus Olivares fought and became the king of the toughest era of the bantamweight history.

Was at a barbershop not to long ago, I struck up conversation with an older gentleman while waiting my turn. We got talking about boxing and great boxers. He brought up Olivares and how when he was a teen he would go see him train in Acuña, Coahuila. He told me stories of his fights and going to go see him. Had it not been for this man I, a 20 yr old aspiring boxer, would of never heard of this man.
