Thats why Okinowan’s live so long…gardening…walking the hills etc? Also Orchestra conductors live a long time. Moving those arms and hands for hours a day.
I do housekeeping all day. It keeps me moving, throughout the whole day. I'm only sitting a few hours a day when I come home, like watching youtube videos like Thomas's.
Thomas, I started the rusk sack exercise. I got a cheapie rusk sack and put 10 lbs in it. I carry it to work. I lift it with both arms, put it on and walk. When it feels lighter, I'll put more weight in it. I can't stand going to a gym but I'll mow the yard, carry my computer equipment, take the stairs all the time. Works for me.
When I go to the gym, I see a lot of folks sitting a long time after doing heavy sets. I have moderated my resistance training but increased my overall non-exercise activity. I burn fat like a machine now.
I see that in the gym, too. I'm thinking, are they trying to build muscle? Because waiting all that time won't do it. Their physique is scrawny, surprisingly...not
Hey Thomas! I feel like I am a good candidate for a study lol. Having watched your channel for a few years I made the jump to lose weight. I have lost 40 pounds in 6 months via IF, now I have begun working out 4-5 days a week with a mix of cardio/resistance training. I also work at a restaurant where I walk 15-25k steps per day. This video really hit because I have been overweight for most of my life despite only ever having had a very active job. Your body adapting to an active lifestyle is no joke and I've seen first hand how it can take a lot more to work on loosing the weight. Currently sitting at 212 and working towards a goal of 180! Thank you for being so inspiring and providing so much knowledge 💪
Good on you for losing that much weight; it's not easy. Be sure to eat clean and organic, since it's now known that the body can also make fat (to store toxins away from major organs.)
I lost 39 lbs - 18 kgs doing OMAD. I focused on micro bouts of resistance training, than doing specific step counts. As for NEAT, that was not that great either. It is all well and good to do things in the short term, but what about in a few weeks and beyond? My bottom line is, do something that avoids being a couch potato.
The problem is that the LESS we exercise, the harder it is to do more neat when you get older. So many things are pulling at you to SLOW DOWN as you age. It would be great if your muscles and joints were screaming for you to be active like when we were children but they don't. Regular exercise makes it easier to be active outside of the act itself. I get mentally nervous when I'm going days without exercise and it makes me increase my neat on its own.
YES, the ago old 1970's advice - move more (NEAT) and eat less (fasting and correct diet). Exercise makes many people hungry so in turn they might eat more when they eat. We know from worker studies in China, India,....where they eat rice, noodles , veggies and meat but work 14 to 16 hour days, they never gain weight. Never.
❤😃 *Italian offended...* I'm laughing "Wooden spoon survivor". My Mother would make the other siblings go get the wooden spoon, she knew how to divide and conquer until we broke the spoon.
@@DrAJ_LatinAmerica 👊🏼 Madonna Mia, Italian Mom's Used psycho / logical warfare on us. Fear does not exist... "Who are you more afraid of "Shadowy silhouette of Mom with her head tilted and belt dangling at her side" Buckle out" Them or me? Pain does not exist - "You don't feel pain" I made you stronger than that... She never watched the Karate kid but I'm sure she was a Cobra.
Mom had a drawer FULL of wooden spoons for when the current one would brake, so the next kid up still got it! She got even more clever later on and got a slotted plastic spoon 😢. My hair stands up even thinking about it now, it hurt much, much, more. It flexed being plastic, so when the spoon end caught up to the handle end it was moving even faster, and the slots made for even less wind resistance during her swing. You were left with a barcode looking welt. The only time she didn't get all of us all was when my little brother came out of the bathroom in his towel (she would let us choose before or after our shower), and turned his behind to receive his lick & our mom just burst out laughing. He had snuck a book into the bathroom before his shower, then after his shower, somehow put the book over his butt and wrapped the towel around his waist. The square shaped butt under the towel was so obvious but with his straight face and that visual, she just laughed and couldn't do it, lost her nerve.😊
@@belojay2850 My Step Mom was Chinese, she would chase my half siblings around with Bamboo sticks. Your Family had different tactics I see very savvy. Sounds like you all had some fun huh? My Mom used psychological warfare on us, whenever we were afraid she would say "Who are you afraid of more them or me?" So fear was not allowed. Tell her my Pitching arm was sore "You don't feel pain"... Some sort of Jedi Mind trick. She was definitely a Cobra and didn't know it.
100% agreed that exercise should be enjoyable no matter what it is. There is always a funner alternative to an exercise that feels like a drag. Also, efficiency is a good thing. For example no one wants to feel exhausted after sparring for just 30 seconds, you want to train to be able to last for a 20 min fight.
There are a lot more outdoorsy people in Russia and walking is something people do together for fun. Winter sports are also big. I think the main problem is that 30% of the population smokes and nobody cares about the diet. Additionally there is still that WW2 mentality with the older population. St. Petersburg was under siege for years with millions of people starving to the point they were eating starch glue from their wallpaper. 1.5 million inhabitants did not make it. So to this day people tell you to eat more and once your plate is empty they pile more food on.
"high consumption levels of tobacco and alcohol have been recognized as an important factor in the low life expectancy of Russian males" global data... just like smoking killed Eisenhower not his saturated fat intake / meat and just like long lived communities they generally are not fat, are useful and not kicked to the curb when turning 60, have loads of social life, don't eat processed refined low micronutrient crap, and drink moderately. Smoking in Greece is the reason their life expectancy is lower than Australia and we eat more meat. Hong Kong - largest meat eaters in the world longest life expectancy - smoking rates less than 10 percent of the community, Greece, nearly 50 percent.
I used to teach English in Tsuruga, Japan, right on the Sea of Japan. A lot of Russian ships used to come into port, and you’d see the Russian sailors in town. They looked very vacuous, almost zombie-like. When I was new in town, Japanese ppl would come up to me and say, “You’re American!” I’d respond, “yes, but how did you know?” “Because you look happy.”
There are some things I disagree with here (respectfully) and is something that fitness advice given from SELF EMPLOYED BUSINESS OWNERS is a little short sighted. Yes NEAT /activity WOULD be a better option IF you have an occupation where you can move around a lot... I've had pretty much a desk job now at 48 for 20 odd years. BUT I've also had EXTREMELY ACTIVE jobs, waiting tables, concrete plant labouring, truck mechanic. My NEAT on the manual jobs was massive. But guess what happened, I naturally increased appetite and was too tired to do structured activity most of the time and had to drastically cut back..so in a reversed way you could inadvertently end up in the same spot...Constrained energy model...in practice. I spent all day shovelling concrete and was too destroyed to get off the couch at the end of the day.. With a desk job and currently driving to work, apart from a standing desk and walking up and down the stairs a few times I can tell you UNLESS you at a minimum go for a walk at lunch you have pretty much minimal opportunity for neat..and no, you can't go for a walk for 15 mins mid morning as that's not allowed. SO are you saying forget a lunchtime run or bike ride and instead twiddle your thumbs a bit ...!? NEAT is not conscious...therefore anybody that says "get your 10000steps a day" thing and you're good,is nonsense...3 20 minute walks IS STRUCTRED EXERCISE and a pretty inefficient way of doing that at best ...Don't get me wrong walking was the only way I could exercise after a PFO operation to have stent put in my heart after this congenital heart disorder...and was great...BUT as the caloric expenditure compared to bike riding or running was way less it was also not sustainable and sooooo boring after 8 weeks!!I went nuts. Now I use NEAT at weekends when I don't have to be at a desk 7 hours a day..Then I have time to do NEAT. Exercise and of course weight training is a substitute for NEAT in a modern environment where we don't have to walk and hunt dear or chop wood. I get what you're saying I just thing NEAT is overly emphasized and not as applicable for those that have sedentary jobs.
YES, my tang su do master was there. He spent 6 months on a sabbatical. He said he felt like a giant at 6' 2" 205lbs and 8% body fat eating rice, noodles, veggies and meats / seafood. He eats 3 cups of rice a day. Some fruit that grows there. No fear of any weight gain. Plus he said he did 3 shots of Awamori per day for digestion (some type of alcohol they make). Every time I try to talk to him about carnivore or keto, he slaps me for being stupid. His blood work is perfect so I can't argue nor do I dare 😂😂
@@DrAJ_LatinAmerica Sounds like a cool and funny dude. I will try this for a few weeks, difficult finding non farm bread fish in my area. Services have gone way down.
With respect to it taking a couple of years for your body to find a new activity setpoint… Would be interested in a reference and/or more detail on this if you can find it. 9:52
Hi Thomas. I am a big fan. I wanted to let you know my opinion that you look much better with much less and shorter beard than the length you have in this video. You look your best if you have no to little beard. Just a feedback.
As a Mom and Grandmother this is why I worry about the harmful effects of video game addiction.....sitting for hours many days in a row....I have nothing against gaming....just the act of sitting and not moving.
I will have to try walking around while doing the dishes.. but I can’t see how that will help other than the fact that I’ll have to mop the floor after..
If it’s not enjoyable for the time being, simply take time off. Hour to an hour and a half is all that’s needed in the gym. And that’s targeting 2-3 muscle groups in one day. 3-5 days a week. Volume varying due to how many days and the duration in your workouts in my unprofessional opinion
I wonder how much of this study was done in Japan or S. Korea. I doubt they exercise as much as westerners do, but they do a lot of walking and day to day activities. One of the lowest body fat in the world too.
As I see it, there are two kinds of people. One who can eat as much as they want and anything they want and they just don't get fat, even if they are fu.cking lazy bastards. And there are the other kind of people, who need to have extraordinary zen-buddhist like discipline to keep themselves in shape, otherwise they grow like hell. I don't think we have so much obese people because all of these people are doing something wrong. Some of them, yes, there are extremities. But I'm getting to the point when I can't blame all of these people anymore. I can gain weight easily, and I have to be VERY disciplined to not to be obese, and I can not do it all the time. People can't live their life like zen-buddhists. When I was in the army, all of us were slim and fit. And all of us were constantly fuc.king hungry. I don't think that average people can do that by self-discipline. So yeah, I understand that NEAT burns some calorie, but for most people when they are in a calorie deficit, they hungry like a wolf in the winter. You can't discipline yourself to not eat when you are hungry. Not for long.
Soleus pushups is perfect activity to burn fat (calories is ab obsolete unit, use kJ instead it's more precise). because it can be done seated everywhere and is so easy to do by almost everyone.

Our dog is now 11 years old and has slowed down in the last couple of years. We previously averaged 4 miles per day. He had an operation in June on his right elbow and has struggled to do any distance or speed since and I'm carrying him up and down stairs. My weight has increased a bit but I'm certainly fatter so I must have lost muscle from not walking. Should I get him put down and buy a puppy?
I used to resent having to walk him and now I feel guilty about walking without him. My back is giving me pain from carrying him so I'm resorting to drugs [Ibuprofen and Paracetemol] to manage my pain. He's getting a lot more than me! Yeah, I don't remember hearing about Non-Exercice Activity Thermogenesis before, but it seems to be a thing.
Russia is easy: low life expectancy due to poverty (only the two biggest cities have money), depression, and alcohol. Alcoholism is a huge problem in Russia...
