the whole point of this long video is just to monitor muscle mass loss due to decreased protein intake as a result of eating only in a limited time duration. keep up resistance training, keep taking adequate protein and all essentials &antioxidants and maximize authopagy potential of the body, such a fundemantal evolutionary defense mechanism alone by itself can take care of so many issues fundamentaly wrong at cellular and even at dna level inside the body. you're good to go. untill "engineered" telomerase repair and elongation is achieved customized fasting regimes for individuals alongside proper macros and autophagy targeted physical training (this is another science) is the golden recipe. no other trash talk now in 2024 can prove otherwise. these are hard limits, hard boundaries well established after massively experimented fads purposefully marketed by the industries for profit maximization and creating consumer dependence on the status quo for the last 60 years starting with the invention of "american breakfast" in 50s&60s. we all know from 80's industrial campaigns against butter/meat/organ meat etc. only to starve whole populations with hydrogenated palm oils, carb&fruit juice loaded diets only to increase obesity to a level never seen in human history before!

Everything in moderation, including fasting. And for women especially, it's not wise to intermittent fast longer than 16/8. One longer fast per year (3-4 days) is sufficient. Also: too much protein is hard on kidneys.

The South Beach Diet, The Zone Diet, Atkins, Weight Watchers, Protein Power, Fasting, High Carb, Low Carb, you can lose fat and weight on all of these diets because the main culprit isn't so much what you're eating, it's how many calories you consume that causes weight loss or weight gain.

It is worthy. I am 73 years old and living proof of it. I have been fasting for the past 20 years without any negative side effects. I fast 16 hours on and 8 hours off. On Saturday and Sunday up to 20 hours. I do not take any medications of any kind, not even Tylenol. The last time I had a cold was in 2002. I exercise daily from 0500 to 0600 hrs, do not feel fatigue, tired; rather, full of energy ready to tackle the day by standing up to 8 hours dispensing medications to people my age and much younger. I practice good eating habits and take my supplements. There you have it. Not bad for an old fart

Thomas, you are mixing up what they are saying. Dr. Attia's stopping 3 and 7 day fasts is completely different from Dr. Patrick's skipping a meal. They are not talking about the same thing and you try to make it seem that they are talking about the same thing just because they use the term "fast". I stopped 3 day fasts because they affect my workouts, but I still do OMAD and have not noticed a detrimental effect from eating only once a day.

I have always been fasting at least 16 hours a day. But in the past year, I have really been following Dr. Mindy and increasing the longer fast. Doing one 24-36 hr fast once per week followed by daily intermittent fasting. I have GAINED FAT, Gained cellulite, lost energy and it seems like my metabolism is stuck. Like now, I’m afraid to eat because even when I do eat healthy… And I incorporate, walnuts, nut butter, avocados that fat goes right to my thighs now. And now that I don’t have the energy to run like I used to before I cannot burn that fat off. I feel less energized and motivated after longer fasts and definitely don’t have the stamina, strength energy or endurance to do the workouts I used to that left me feeling way more lean, energized and healthier than fasting has gotten me. I need to get back to doing maybe 16 hours of daily fasting but increasing my workouts several days a week. Because walking and doing longer fasting just doesn’t do it for me. It’s like I have no muscle tone, no strength and actually more cellulite than I ever had before. 🏃‍♀

@@HH-gv8mx I'm so sorry you are experiencing so much! I can't speak to your results because I don't know your medical situation or food intake! But I know for me, after 30 years vegetarian and juice fast cleanses, I hit menapause and slow metabolism. I follow Dr. Mindy, too. For over 5 years, and Dr. Boz. I had a cancer scare, pre diabetic numbers/ insulin resistance, and some related health concerns including 30 extra pounds of weight! 72 hour fasting on keto diet (whole , unprocessed foods, no seed oils, organic, HIGH FAT 80% of my diet is fat very low carbs) brought my AIC from 5.7 to 4.8 and my cholesteral ratios, HOMO IR to perfect. I reversed all insulin resistance. Cancer healed. I evicted over 30 pounds. I keep it off with IF. But low fat , high carb made me unhealthy. I believe that it's important to eat properly along with the fasting, and to understand the body chemisty as this goes on. I'm going to be 58 years old in June and I feel and look healthier than ever in my life. I get compliments on my skin and hair all the time. There are hundreds of peer reviewed scientifically supported studies on the benefits of fasting, and metabolic switching is important. If you don't follow true ketosis then it's simply "yo yo dieting" and can mess up the metabolism rather than correct it. A continuous glucose monitor CGM is a great tool I paid for it out of pocket for three months, just to see how my body reacted to certain foods. My insluin is down to 6 from over 20! I believe in the power of fasting , correctly, and low carb high fat.

Fasting was the most mind-blowing "discovery" I made for myself (I put that in quotes because obviously I followed others like Dr. Fung talking about it). It was like discovering how I had lived in my own "Matrix", got to see it from the outside for the first time, and now I live outside of some unknown prison I had lived in for 40 years (the belief that I HAD to eat). Fasting changed my life utterly, both as intermittent and as the prolonged version. It's one of the most powerful tools available to us, along with what we chose to eat, how much of it, the exercise we chose, and the mental stress we place upon ourselves. Play with all the variables, discover what works for you (and it's fluid - what works today may not work in 10 years as you age and can't do some exercises, for example).

I think they need to define/clarify their use of the term fasting. 1. Are they referring to intermittent fasting? (Eating only within a specific time window each day?) 2. Are they referring to OMAD (one meal a day?) 3. Are they referring to 24 or more hours without food? Etc.

I'm 60. I regularly do 18:6 fast. Sometimes this is done by skipping breakfast, sometime an early dinner/late lunch at work at 3PM, then breakfast 9AM. I work out 4 times a week, 5PM weekdays, morning on weekend, and always eat plenty of protein after I work out, meat and plant. Any other times I stick to mostly plant-based proteins. DESPITE FASTING, I HAVE GAINED PLENTY OF MUSCLE MASS! So much, that is is obvious in the mirror. I am not competing in any sports, so really how much muscle does one need, if one is obviously very muscular? When I did a 4 day fast I did lose muscle, but I got it back soon enough. So I do a prolonged fast only a couple times a year just to hopefully get into autophagy. Fasting is the easiest way for me personally to keep off the fat. My priority of low belly fat and sleep well (I can't go to bed too hungry). Since I lost weight this way five years ago, I no longer have heart palpitation or puffy feet!

All I know is this: Due to 18-hour fasts on a daily basis, I was able to lose over 30 pounds in a 4 month period. In addition to the weight loss, certain biomarkers improved significantly (i.e. cholesterol, blood sugar/insulin resistance, blood pressure). Not to mention better energy levels and mental clarity. So, considering all of the benefits mentioned above, I will continue with my daily fasting protocol. Naysayers or individuals that no longer fast will not deter me from continuing such a practice. 👉💯🧘‍♂️🙏☯️

@@azzgunther Yes, I agree. An, imo, those here who are reporting weightloss with Fasting may have missed the point of this video.... IMO the point of this video was to make viewers aware that Fasting can have drawbacks - especially when it comes to the realization that a loss of muscle mass will generally accompany fatloss. I DO think Thomas chose the wrong (unfortunate) title AND subtitle for this video. When we get past the negative (possibly clickbait) title- and watch the video, we see that no 'expert' is generally against fasting - but, instead, are stating that fasting d/n work for them - and further that they wanted to convey some of the misnomers about - and drawbacks of - Fasting. This, imo, clearly came across in those video- but again, an unfortunate and misleading title was assigned To this video!

I am not so sure that they are warning against fasting. What I am seeing here are suggestions to be more mindful about protein when considering or engaging in fasting. For instance, suggesting being cautious about skipping breakfast is not suggesting against fasting, it may simply mean having your feasting period earlier. Eg. I used to have breakfast around midday and my last meal around 7 or 8 in the evening. I now have breakfast around 7 or 8 am and my last meal around 5pm. Then I saw the suggestion that prolonged fasting need not be frequent. I don't see warnings against fasting generally

I feel something they may also have in common is a relatively intense/religious workout schedule - you could probably call these people athletes. There's lots of benefits common to fasting and exercise, but that doesn't mean more of both is better in combo. Constant heavy workouts probably do pair better with "feasting" mode. If you're already working out so much that you couldn't gain fat if you tried, maybe you're already on the edge. Like, I am noticing the contrast with the perspective of other big fasting proponents who advise to keep exercise low/light during long fasts so as not to confound the muscle preserving processes - which seems synergistic with the natural rhythms. Maybe those guys have just been on the money all along, and if you're a gym junkie with a high exercise load who would never dream of skipping a leg day, this is just the expected result of "I'll just add fasting to what I'm doing". Sometimes these "biohackers" have a tendency towards extremes that override instincts, you know? If I did what some of them do, my body would fall in a heap - or at least it would have at the beginning of my healing journey. I wouldn't care to try their way now. I don't know. I'm no expert myself. But I do know fasting works well for me for keeping my health in check with a lifestyle that my body can sustain. I feel like I'm working with its natural rhythms and it isn't going to revolt on me. Let them experiment with maintaining heavy training AND fasting AND adding 2g/kg of protein and crunch their spreadsheets to see the results. My body and I will keep on doing what works well for us.

The video featuring Thomas DeLauer discussing expert opinions on fasting, including those of Dr. Peter Attia, Dr. Rhonda Patrick, and Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, offers several key takeaways on the reconsideration of fasting practices: 1. **Shift in Expert Opinion:** Many health and fitness experts who once advocated for fasting have revised their views based on emerging evidence and personal observations related to muscle mass preservation and overall health impacts. 2. **Concern Over Muscle Mass:** A significant concern among these experts is the potential for muscle loss during fasting, especially with prolonged periods without food. Maintaining muscle mass is emphasized as crucial for health and longevity. 3. **The Importance of Protein:** The discussions underline the critical role of protein in preventing muscle breakdown. Adequate protein intake is essential, particularly after periods of fasting, to support muscle protein synthesis. 4. **Revised Fasting Practices:** While fasting can have benefits, these experts suggest modifications to fasting routines to mitigate negative effects, such as focusing on sufficient protein consumption and timing workouts to preserve muscle. 5. **Protein Intake Recommendations:** For those engaging in fasting, a higher protein intake than previously thought necessary is recommended-ranging from 1.6 to 2 grams per kilogram of body weight-to support muscle maintenance or growth. 6. **Exercise and Fasting Compatibility:** Resistance training is highlighted as beneficial during fasting periods to help counteract muscle loss. Proper nutrition, particularly adequate protein and calorie intake around exercise, is crucial. 7. **Balanced Approach to Fasting:** The experts advocate for a balanced approach that incorporates fasting into a lifestyle that also prioritizes muscle preservation through diet and exercise, rather than fasting in isolation. 8. **Fasting is Not One-size-fits-all:** The evolving perspectives of these health experts reflect a more nuanced understanding of fasting, recognizing it can be part of a healthy lifestyle if properly managed, especially in terms of nutrition and physical activity.

So I put myself on a strict keto diet and started intermittent fasting. But I'm doing this to heal a body that has been under stress for a very long time. So for me while keeping the muscle is important because I'm an older woman it is also important that I get this weight off and don't go down the road of diabetes. So for those of us who are not at a healthy weight or not at a healthy point in our lives fasting might just be the thing we need.

Some people are overly focused on losing weight fast. It can easily turn into an eating disorder and obsession. They become weak, lose muscle, and they are anxious all the time. They start to believe they look healthy.

@HH-gv8mx Longer fasts do not work for me either. I was in the hospital for 9 days at the end of last year. I could not eat because of surgery on my colon. I was shocked at how much muscle and strength I lost. It took weeks to get my stamina and strength back. So long fasts are not for everyone.

The best benefit of fasting is that you lower anxiety and dettach emotions from eating, so you are not associating bad or good feelings with food, so you feel really liberated, you feel control of yourself, pain is not that bad, fear is gone. That alone is worth of it.

Fasting has changed EVERYTHING for me. When I adopted a whole food no-grain/sugar/seed oil diet and then finally added an OMAD approach to eating, my health has completely transformed! I am a retired trainer/weight-lost specialist and fasting has helped me drop to my leanest weight without overtraining. For me it’s the true solution. I do focus on clean protein, organic vegetables, butter and single-source olive oil in that exact order and at 67 I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been.

@@scotlandtheinsane3359 I do. I test my blood sugar and ketone level every morning. I do 160g of protein daily and my ketones are usually between 3-3.3. Times have changed, keto doesn't have to be the standard high fat keto of the past anymore. High protein keto is practiced by many.

@@scotlandtheinsane3359 totally true! most people eat high protein keto and dont measure their ketones... and are not in ketosis... @Pazybienaestacasa I'm okay with a bit higher protein on it, so I consider myself lucky in that respect. But you utilise protein better on keto, so it's not as necessary anyway. I've always felt that it is super easy to regain muscle after fasting. I water fast for usually 4-7 days a few times per year, and no question, you do lose some muscle. But within 2-3 weeks, I'm back to making progress at the gym. Sometimes you have to take one step back to propel you two steps forward.

@simplenothing OR you could be the type of genetic outlier known in (mostly gym circles) as a 'gainer' - put on muscle very easily. ...def, not common for the majority. And so... not recommended, imo, for the average person. Another case of 'What's good for the goose'... NOT necessarily 'good for the gander.'

I have to agree; at 61 (now 63), I began Keto (which saved my life; long story), but I didn't know about the increased need for protein. With multiple 2 and 4 day fasts I lost a lot of fat AND lean muscle; the latter which I had from my many years of working out as a younger man. Now I have a shoulder issue because of it; still trying to recover. So I take creatine and have upped my protein; doing mostly carnivore diet with some fasting on the weekends; "flexing out" of Keto (per Keto Kamp's channel); often doing two small meals and a big one - with some carbs once or twice a week.
