The Leica D Lux 8 is Coming

Leica have announced the new D-Lux 8 and while we haven't seen it in person, it's always great to see another compact digital camera enter the market, especially when it has the reputation that you get with a Leica camera. While it packs some pretty similar specs to the D-Lux 7, the design has changed and there are a whole host of accessories available as well.

I am tempted to upgrade because I love the operation of the Q3 and the D Lux is no where neard as easy to use. But I am disappointed that Leica did not bump the spec AT ALL.

Disappointing, I loved my original LX100, which I’ve just sold for the X-T50. The LX100 ii wasn’t a big enough upgrade at twice the price and I didn’t bother. Whilst this cosmetic update looks great, why couldn’t we have the new G9 25.2 MP sensor to give it in excess of 20 MP. Ive been really looking forward to this release - Technically it isn’t an upgrade at all.

I had the original DLux 109. Mechanically, it was a joy to handle, and image quality was superb for a compact, but I sold it because it was also a most frustrating camera to use. Very, very slow response. Flipping through review and it freezed by the 5th or 6th image, needing 5 to 10 seconds to recover...

Really? Why not? I still use my 16mp Olympus E-M1 from 2013 for corporate work in London. The client never complains

Pretty much the innards are, despite the Leica Made in Germany on the top. They should still be giving Panasonic the nod for still using older technology.

Disappointingly no grip released at th esame time as the camers (as i have on my D Lux 7), esp as they have removed the small grip on the back.

No weather proofing according to the other only reviewer on YT. But he also says it doesn't really need it. My old M6 wasn't weather sealed, but it always coped in the rain.

I'd rather get a Ricoh GR IV when it finally arrives. APS-C sensor with a really high quality f2.8 lens is better than MFT sensor with a zoom IMHO.

The only reason I'm not getting a Ricoh is that there is no viewfinder and, while it's a non-issue for many, I much prefer a viewfinder on a camera. I think I'll end up keeping my great D-Lux 7 and buying the new Fuji X-T50. Leica kind of blew the opportunity to make the next iteration of the DLux line an impressive one, having skimped on this older tech model they call the DL8.

17MP is more than enough for 20"x30" prints. That's what I use.

As a long time Leica owner, I see no point in introducing this camera. Putting a 21 MP MFT sensor in it, yet the lens can't cover the sensor and it only uses 17 MP of it. No IBIS, and by all accounts this is just another cosmetic revamp of a an seven year old LX 100II with cosmetics from a Q camera. Where is Leica going with all this? Without trying to be impolite, people paid the silly Leica prices partly due to the ownership being a small club of true enthusiasts. It looks like Leica partnership has decided to cash in on the exclusivity while the going is good.

IBIS is ‘in body image stabilisation’ which is only needed in interchangeable cameras as it provides image stabilisation for non-stabilised lenses. This camera, if the same as the Panasonic LX-100ii, will have optical image stabilisation.

@@mdjmurray I don't want to be customizing any more buttons than necessary when they had an exposure compensation dial that was so easily accessible already. Almost anything can be assigned, but why take it away when it was immediately at hand? I like it on my DL7 as it's changeable so quickly. The new Fuji X-T50 is looking better and better all the time, with the dials that we use frequently right on top.

Because that would likely make it too big, or too expensive. Leica have to eat too. The new M12 will likely only sell to a few, so Leica will have to make money elsewhere to survive in an already crazily competitive market. I think the D-Lux 8 will sell very well, because it's not only so cheap, but a rehash of an older design but with completely up-to-date innards and OS.
