A Death Note Analysis that focuses on systems of people, and how Buddhism plays a role in the overall Philosophy of Deathnote. Talking about the moments characters like Near get lucky in the story, but more so pointing out the many moments Light Yagami also did, and how this luck is emblematic of DeathNote's writing and themes.

God is being sarcastically used when referring to Light. Light isn't actually God but he believed he would become one and he believed he had divine providence, which was a lie. He was lucky, not divinely selected and eventually his luck would run out/karma would get back to him

I've always loved the second half of death note because all of Near's luck doesn't come in a vacuum. Light is continuously getting more arrogant and angrier that Near has the "audacity to challenge God." Near gets lucky, but that's because Light could never see anyone but L as a threat to him due to his own arrogance. If Light took the time to better control his pieces, there would have been no luck at all.
@ZionSairin

Okay so I literally sent a comment on another video 5 minutes ago that said I didn’t feel Near should have won... but you kinda just explained it a lot. The luck part, I mean.
@ellienas5179
@ellienas5179 3 года назад
Exactly Light really let himself go after L died. At some points he couldn't even mask how arrogant and put off he was in front of the Task Force (he'd outright manipulate and use Takada in front of them, something he wouldnt dare do in front of L, and he just felt darker and more stand off-ish)
@ryuk5673
@ryuk5673 3 года назад
True but from the beginning Near is set up as the spiritual successor to L. While I thought the ending was satisfying, I can see why people feel like Near should not have won. It never felt like he could be outsmarted, unlike L who made some grave mistakes as well as risk a lot to gain important pieces of information. Unlike Near, who is so confident that he risks everyone’s life at the end just to prove he is right. It felt formulaic, predictable. The second season had amazing moments, but for me the ending was not one of them
@UnknownCartoonEditor
@UnknownCartoonEditor 3 года назад
Arrogance is what brought Light down. Season 1 he was more calculating, season 2 he was too haughty after becoming the “god of the new world”. Even at the end when he’s caught he can’t really reason his way out of it. All he can do is give a passionate speech as “somebody had to do it!”. It’s not strategic, it’s just emotional. When L died, his strategic side died with him, and he thought on base level no one could ever match him strategically.
@Pantalaimon91
@Pantalaimon91 3 года назад
@@ryuk5673 Light did outsmart Near though. He was just too arrogant and didn't control his pawns correctly. It's Mikami's fault that Near ever figured out what the plan was, otherwise he had no idea. Light singles out the killing of Mello to be the weakest point in his plan and his biggest gambit. He himself can still recognize it's where the most could have gone wrong, and it did. I personally feel like it was meant to be a little unsatisfactory. We're watching the villain who has convinced himself he's the hero, lose because of his own anger, arrogance, and overconfidence. It a weird place to be in as a viewer/reader. Part of you still wants Light to win because, "He's our protagonist. He's who we were rooting for from the beginning right?" You especially don't want him to lose to Near, who is just as arrogant and manipulative as Light is. You're angry that Light beat L only to lose here, which is exactly the point.

I hate how people disregard this because of the idea that "luck" is related to stuff like horoscope and shit. No, luck is just a part of the randomness of the world. Like when he explained how Light only met Naomi because of boredom, it is already established that Light has always been bored. That's how he found the Death Note. It's still incredibly lucky for him but it's not entirely unreasonable. He could've chosen to do other things in other parallel worlds but the fact that he happens to do that is luck, plain and simple. And that's the same with reality. Mindless action can affect something else randomly without reason because it doesn't need to. I think people who think "there are no accidents" are even more unscientific because they frame everything as if it's all orchestrated by the universe.

Light's biggest mistake was revealing so much information about the death note since the first episode just to taunt L. If he didn't reveal he could control the time of death, he would have an automatic alibi when monitored or incarcerated. If he didn't reveal he has access to police records he wouldn't have been caught at all, they would have to check all the people in the region instead of police officers and their family. He didn't need to kill his fbi agents and all but confirm he's kira with the bus hijacking and camera footage. Basically by the second season Near knew light was kira already. He also willingly decided to become the second L when he should have quit and layed low so no one knew his location and N couldn't turn his own people against him. It was a matter of time before he lost.

Light should’ve hid. He shouldn’t have played a game. Similarly, L shouldn’t have kept goading Light with more information. Should’ve never revealed himself. A real investigator, in a situation like that, would’ve hid in the shadows like Raye Penber did. But L could’ve done it more effectively. L could’ve hid from inside the school. Never revealed his name, gotten bad grades on purpose, and wait for Light to make a bad move.

I always find new meaning and details when I rewatch deathnote. Like for example when I realised that light and L both shared the same fate like L said because of the chains they wore or that L rubbing lights feet is biblical symbolism for when Jesus rubbed the feet of Judas who Jesus knew was a traitor. Little meanings like that are the reason death note is my favourite anime of all time.

That is a wonderful extended metaphor. I do have to be a little nitpicky though. It was foot washing not rubbing. Foot washing is an ancient custom meant to honor someone. Most often a guest. The other is a foot massage. Also while I'm far from a Biblical scholar I'm pretty sure any such moment between them happened well before we can definitely say Jesus knew Judas was going to betray him.

Something that people don't realize is that Near "getting lucky" by Mikami going off on his own to kill Takada is partly Light's own fault. He both didn't give Mikami enough information (like the fact that he could kill people in emergencies) and the fact that he failed to consider to outcome of Mello's actions. Luck certainly plays a large role in the series, but it's a shame that people look at one instance where Near could be considered lucky and ignore all of the times where Light did as well out of bias. Awesome analysis though. I love that Death Note is still so beloved after having ended so long ago.

I never considered how much Luck carried the fortunes of the characters. I always had a theory that maybe if there were Gods of Death, that Gods of Life exist too, in order to balence the structure of the world, a Ying to the Yang as it were. The Death Note is very rule oriented and has multiple contracts for its use, so I imagined that the Life Note is very chaotic. This 'luck' of the Death Note characters, I always suspected were the tapestries of the Gods of Life, though nothing I had concretely assumed.

Light is quite an intriguing character, claiming that he would free the world of bad people and reign over it while balancing it himself, while also not being able to put apart his ideals when it comes to achieving his goals. In the end, Light lost because of the destroyed path he'd left behind, and I don't see Mikami's action being "lucky" for Near, as it was just a matter of time for a disruption to happen between the 2 people that had that power, which was once alluded to by how Mikami's ideal of a perfect world was to also eliminate the lazy and threatened with killing them as well. Light knew sharing his power was something risky, and the risk came at a high cost in the end.

I still think there was a big arrogance ingredient in this. The guy went in person to a warehouse unarmed and I think I know why: he gave L a giant smile just before his death so that he died knowing Light was Kira. He went out of his way to catch him just to grin at his face and rub in his victory to his face. He probably wanted to do the same to Near, he was indeed looking forward to the second Mikamk wrote those names. If he had been just a tad more prudent he would not have died.

For me the Reason I disliked the 2nd "half"/part of death note was because I liked L too much. I just loved everything about him, he had flaws that he knew about and in the end these Flaws led to his downfall his emotions caused his Failure but it made him more human than light. In general I always rooted for L and him dying was just a waste for me because he was so close and it was so frustrating like even though Light had a literal God of death and Supernatural Powers on his side on top of lucky moments like Misa and Rem (Raem Ram?) being easily used tools for light that got him the upper hand. Everything was perfectly set in Line for light he just had to put it all together. Not to discredit him his plans were genius and he was a step ahead of L in the end, but all the odds were against L and even then he still got sooo close and kept going was inspiring for me. So him failing felt unfair because simply of the odds that L had no way of knowing at that moment was so tragic, I did not want Near to succeed I wanted L to win. As you said in your last Video Near was more of a successor to Light as to L and thats why I was never a big fan of him. Near was simply not my cup of Tea and I just enjoy watching L way more than watching Near. Im not saying hes a bad characther im just saying I like him wayy less than L because of personal preference.

It also might seem strange for the author to include such a competent character (Naomi) out of the blue just to just as suddenly get rid of her as if she was never there in the first place and existed more like an inconsequential loose end. It's covering up an unintentional issue with the writing of her character. The author originally planned to include her as apart of the task force, but accidently made her uncover things he later realized brought her much closer to solving the case then the author intentionally wanted for the story, and so had to get rid of her prematurely even though he actually wanted to include her in the future. Even if their meeting was purely based off of luck, the resulting mind-game became my favorite part of the show.

I can't believe that some Death Note fans will say that Near only won due to luck and use that fact to justify their hate towards him, only to turn around and worship Light for his intelligence. Light relied on luck SO many times throughout the series. That's what makes Death Note thrilling. Even if he prepares for every possible scenario, there's still a possibility that every one of Light's plans could fail due to bad luck.

Correction to you in regards to Mu. Chapter 107 confirmed that the rule that states death note users can't go to heaven and hell, it simply means heaven and hell never existed in the first place. Ryuk was surprised when light realized this because he assumed everyone believed in the afterlife. Ryuk confirms that heaven and hell doesn't exist and EVERYONE goes to the same place irregardless of what they do. Death is equal . The last few rules confirm this by saying that all humans will die and will go to nothingness. Ohba confirms this multiple times in death note: how to read. He says that there is nothing after death and no one comes back to life
@kritikumar6134
@kritikumar6134 3 года назад
I always thought that Mu was the void that was shown in Death Parade. Since Light made a cameo in Death Parade and both shows were made by the same studio, I assumed Death Parade was created as a way to expand upon the briefly explored concept of the afterlife in Death Note. If that is the case, then it has been confirmed that heaven and hell don't exist in the Death Note universe and that the only place left to go according to Death Parade is either reincarnation or the void. I'm assuming Light went to the void and I'm hoping that L got reincarnated.

Which I thought was odd in a world with Death Gods and magical killer notebooks. Especially since it's kind of clumsy to suggest Heaven and Hell do exist by stating humans who specifically use the Death Note won't go to either. It seems like a contradiction or retraction that should've seen the heaven and hell thing edited out. No wonder it leaves people speculating about the concept of afterlife in the Death Note world. Especially when the idea is clearly established that there are alternate planes of existence that have very limited interaction with one another. So it's very possible that there are planes existence the very limited Death Gods don't know about. It's similar in regard to that whole thing about the Death Note or the shinigami attached to it possessing its user but also claiming that the users are acting entirely of their own free will. Either you don't understand the concept of posession in this context at all or the line regarding it should've been cut.
@samukajabateh1640
@samukajabateh1640 3 года назад
@@oxtheunlikelycontemplator2682 its not clumsy . Look back to the second to last chapter. The hidden meaning of the rule was that heaven and hell didn't exist . When light heard that death note users can't go to hell or heaven, he surmised that neither existed . Ryuk praised him stating that he thought all humans believed in the afterlife. Also. Dont say there are realms that the shinigami don't know. The author EXPLICITLY said multiple times that there is nothing after death and you only live once. He even says its one of the underlying themes . There's not much more confirmation than you need. No contradiction . Just elaboration . Dont jump to herculean leaps in logic
@oxtheunlikelycontemplator2682
@oxtheunlikelycontemplator2682 3 года назад
@@samukajabateh1640 it's not a Herculean leap in logic to say that explicitly stating that specific persons can't go specific places implies those places exist. Otherwise there'd be no need for a rule about it yet alone one with such specificity. It's also not much of a hidden meaning if you blatantly reveal it by refuting the implication in the same text just a little further down the list. The only reason I can see for it is to create the story beats where Light asks Ryuk about the apparent contradiction and Ryuk tell him there's no afterlife to which Light says he knew that already. And it's not needed for that. It's strange to me that most humans disregard the possibility of an afterlife based off lack of belief in the supernatural but Light has tangible proof that the supernatural is real yet apparently still doesn't believe in the afterlife or consider the possibility? Like who wouldn't ask a Death God about the possibility of an afterlife after they now know for a fact that a kind of spirit beings and another realm of existence are real? There's no need for that rule to be in the Death Note it could just as easily be nixed and keep the one about all humans going to nothingness and the exact same message could still be delivered in almost the same way. But having heaven and hell alluded to in this manner, in a rule set in a magical killer notebook for a bunch of immortal grim reaper figures does create a certain degree of ambiguity. You were able to resolve it by looking up author interviews. When an author has to clarify a major theme in their work in this manner it's because it's not well communicated in the work. That is clunky. I suppose that would be kinder than clumsy. I still love Death Note but that doesn't mean I think it or Ohba are perfect.

Light, Misa, Takada, Mikami, Higuchi and everyone in Mellos base died. While L and Mello also died, despite never using the notebook themselfs, they just planned for other people to do it. Also Light's father didn't use it and got to die thinking his son isn't kira and didn't kill the guy who pretty much stopped kira in the end. Karma, in my eyes is just a fancy way of claiming your actions have consequences. It puts the belief in the idea that if you are a good person and if you complete good deeds, then you will be rewarded with that same treatment back. However, that isn't always the case. I do agree that if you take an action, just by existing you create change in the world. As you are born people must react to your existence and you react back to theirs constantly as we all interact. However, that doesn't mean just cause you are nice you will be treated nicely, and that is where 'karma' is turned on its head. Karma overblows the idea that every action or deed you do, will immediately take effect afterwards, and says that being good will always bring good back to you. To me though, that isn't always how life works. In interactions with people you've met or never met, then that will likely work to that small scale. However, no level or amount of good deeds can eliminate all wrong, all problems, etc. That's cause we and this world can never be perfect. Now, that I'm done rambling, great work on the video, keep it up :)
@GlobusTheGreat
@GlobusTheGreat 3 года назад
Yes, I think I agree with what you're saying. I dislike when "Karma" is thought of as a cosmic force that will balance out your deeds and rewards, because I believe in no supernatural cosmic power like that. I think karma can be more suitably understood and relied upon as a heuristic for human nature; doing good unto others tends to beget good from others, and people can sometimes sense positive attitudes, intentions, and dispositions in subtle ways that can cause rewards to appear cosmic in nature. Being good to others is a good rule and is likely to reward you; but it is foolish to think that the mechanism is one of divine balancing, and it is more likely to lead to depression once you realize that you can't calculate what you will reap as it is imprecise and indefinite.

there is actually nothing in the philosophy of karma that suggests you will be treated better for being a good person. rather the belief is these good acts will bring you good fortune in your next incarnation. not your present life future. what your thinking of is a very westernized interpretation of karma that simplifies it to, if you do good good things happen, if you do bad, bad things happen. but that is not exactly how it works. it has more to do with justifying the caste system, then trying to encourage being a good person. which it also is trying to do.

I understand Light got lucky many more times than N, I still hated that lucky bust though. Not because of the luck alone but because some random new guy came in and wins because of 1 lucky instance. L put so much hard work into what he did, for N to solve the entire case that quickly felt very cheap and only cheapened all of my time spent loving L. I understand that in real life, the good guys only really need to get lucky once to find the bad guy so this story is partially true to reality; But at the same time, it will illogically always cheapen the ending of the story for me. Maybe if we had more time with N, time to maybe understand he's not some new brat that got lucky and won. Because that's all N is to me. Sorry for the long comment here, I just really do love Death Note as a whole and have many thoughts on this part of the series, thanks for the awesome content as always Hiding

I wouldn't say that it was one lucky instance that did Light in, but rather a combination of many factors that Light didn't take into account, which allowed for Near to put the pieces together much easier than anticipated. As this video discusses, luck is an element that exists throughout the story. The actions (or lack thereof) of the characters determine the role luck ultimately plays in the narrative. Near getting lucky wouldn't have mattered if Light hadn't gotten overconfident and took the struggle against Near more seriously. Light's hubris caused him to make errors in judgment that Near was able to use to his advantage. Near's conflict with Light isn't done very well in the anime & it doesn't do his character any justice. The manga actually does showcase how he isn't just some substitute for L, but a character that is complex and varied in his own way.
@alexanrsousa
@alexanrsousa 2 года назад
As someone who only watched the anime, I think the issue is that the second part was more rushed. If the anime adaptation kept the same pace, that part would have as many episodes as the first, and thus N would've had way more screen time, just as much as L. Also, N wasn't idle during the timeskip. He had to rebuild the case as Rem made Wasabi delete a bunch of data related to the case, IIRC. That being said I do want to read the manga once, just to experience the plot in its original pacing.

Death Note is the most well written anime that I have ever seen. Those that feel cheated, usually feel "ENTITLED" and did not like the ending of Evangelion either.

Naomi thought that bus criminal's death maybe due to Kira, and that he can kill without heart attacks! Then.... if it would give away light. It can be, since ray was investigating light and he was also in the bus, but naomi did not knew about it while L knew. Know compare:- 1. If Naomi informed so to L, there would just be more possibilities but no proof. Light would be suspected, but it can also be kira killed the criminal and ray from somewhere else(no one knew about the death note's rules at that time) 2. L found about Noami's suicide, but since he knew her from BB Murder Case, he thought it was a unnatural move and kira may have a hand. Also then he may have the power to kll without heart attacks(Naomi's suicide!)....Ray's position at death must be weird since he knew light unlike other FBI agents who died suddenly, so from this observation, L suspected Light. Naomi's hypothesis was only proved after the death note was retrieved from Higuchi....but by then the false rules protected light and misa.....eventually klling L....So, except for showing Light's sadistic nature and eliminating a possible hinderance to the cat and mouse race between Light and L, nothing much was changed. Also, It didn't delay investigation by more than 2 days since Naomi and L reached the same clue within that time......

The main reason it would have been a big deal is specifically the day of the accident Raye penber was trailing Light, so if Naomi had informed L that Raye spoke with a suspect and gave the date L would have known Light could have gotten information that lead to their deaths. It changes a TON. Like it's not bulletproof evidence but it's about ABC as you can get

The very premise of the show, someone like Light finding the death note, is already a huge matter of luck, hinged on one God Of Death *being bored*. The weight of everything that happens, the main thematic thrust of it, is driven by Light himself, his ego, his wild ambitions. He’s the one that views it all as a game he is meant to win, to prove to himself that he is meant to wield this power and use it to judge others. Because he is the protagonist, its hard to not see the events of the story through this perspective, losing sight of the fact that for all his schemes and accomplishments and natural abilities he has… he’s just a human who stumbled onto a magic book. He was never *really* in complete control… had ryuk or any other shinigami willed it they could have written Light’s name down whenever they wanted. We assume that by virtue of many things going on in our life all at once, that complications beyond our understanding form, that there is some greater purpose to it all, that some level of control and planning exists somewhere by someone, and that if things go wrong theres always something else that could have been done. There’s always that illusion that we could have had something, known something, done something, that would have right some wrong in our life, that will never go away because we are constantly moving forward into the unknown. I see Death Note as the ultimate display of humility; even given an extraordinary power with significant advantages, we are still at the mercy of factors beyond our control that only incidentally allow us to continue, and when we lose sight of that and our ego goes out of control, we become capable of doing monstrous things, until the universe inevitably puts us in our place.

Ive actually never seen death note before this year, and this was the same year that I have been hard-core studying Buddhism and eastern philosophy in general. I saw instantly what you're talking about and it made me happy to see someone mention it. The subtle yet not so subtle in this show makes me very happy.

I just realized that death note could be an allegory for anxiety. Think about it, you over analyze, over thinking, everything, and you see threats everywhere.

@@Nemopoly it's a piece of art, it's subjective. Of course people are going to project themselves into it. And my argument is based on something that is present throughout the show. It's completely valid to interpret a piece of art on your own, you should try it sometime.

I'm so glad that Neir killed the corruption that is light. Why would we WANT light to win? He's no longer the person he was before and he became the very thing he hated. He became a terrible monster that only saw everyone as pawns for his own gain.

I've honestly not watched death note since everyone kept spoiling it to me and I couldn't really be bothered watching something when I know most of the twists, but this review for sure has changed my mind!! Should I watch it?

Absolutely. Even if you know all of the spoilers, getting to see how it plays out is fantastic. Death Note isn't really about the endings, it's about the journey to those endings.

I love death note and rewatched it because of your last video. It would be awesome if you talk about the 2020 one-shot of death note because it showcases a whole new perspective of using the death note and I know you could make it interesting. Thanks for being so damn cool with these analyses.
