If I ever need a surgical procedure, I'll be sure to ask if the attending doctor uses a checklist. If he doesn't, I'll find another one.
@DJ_POOP_IT_OUT_FEAT_LIL_WiiWii
You could also use a marker to highlight where the operation is supposed to happen. I also recommend writing *DON"T STEAL MY ORGANS* behind your medical card. That way they won't rush to unplug you in case something goes wrong.

This is great. As a medical student, I am plagued with the stats about medical errors all the time, and I'm very worried about this issue when I have to make medical decisions and do procedures on actual patients. This study eases my mind a lot. I'm a chronic list-maker and I make lists for absolutely anything it is possible to make a list for, mainly because I have ADHD and I would forget anything and everything if I don't write it in a list, calendar, and/or put a reminder. So I know that this will be my strategy for reducing medical error when I am treating patients. (The trick is not forgetting to make the checklist lol)
@DJ_POOP_IT_OUT_FEAT_LIL_WiiWii
As a checklist hater I found that never taking notes helped me a lot to not forget. I just became better and better at remembering everything by making a conscious effort to do so. I'm not working in a critical field though.
@monkiram

JJ K My mom is like that as well, and I'm sure many people are blessed with the ability to remember things without lists. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those people :(
@liesdamnlies3372

JJ K That's all well and good until lives depend on you not forgetting something. I make lists for anything important. Because it's *my* life on the line, in a sense.

Excellent report! Checklists work and have MANY applications. Yet, they are very underestimated. Sad, but true. Never underestimate the power of a checklist.

Interesting that kahneman described a checklist for the cognitive biases as I have watched a video where Dr. Henry Marsh was describing his initial frustration with checklists and also the realisation that even after he accepted it's implementation and value there were still medical errors he nearly made due to those cognitive biases that would not be stopped by the who surgical checklist. The reduction in error in the ICU is not surprising as there is mandatory 1:1 or 2:1 nursing:patient care there depending on your hospital. But on the wards I've seen nurses inhumanely tied to up to 15 patients. 1:15! That on top of both us and the nurses working superhuman hours. Checklists are a basic requirement for survival in medicine; we don't manage patients (that's for the higher tiers of staff such as attendings to do); we do one task after another the best we can, cross that off and move on to the next.

+Fabian I was thinking of doing a video related to that actually. Here are the 12 he listed. 1. Self interested bias 2. Affect heuristic 3. Groupthink 4. Saliency bias 5. Confirmation bias 6. Availability bias 7. Anchoring bias 8. Halo effect 9. Optimistic bias 10. Disaster neglect 11. Loss aversion 12. Sunk cost fallacy

2:53 who would use a mixed width font for programming, honestly?
@azai.mp4
@azai.mp4 8 лет назад
+Leo S Actually now that I think about it, why do we use monospace fonts for programming in the first place?
@leonhrad
@leonhrad 8 лет назад
Most people prefer the columns lining up, when writing code, because it makes some code structures clearer. I don't actually know if there are studies about which fonts are easier to read, though. A big reason is probably also that we're used to it. Early terminals (and also today's terminal emulators) were really simple and they were only capable of fixed width fonts. And because early computers were almost exclusively used by programmers, we have kept the tradition of programming in monospaced fonts, while proportional fonts are used for other documents.
@azai.mp4
@azai.mp4 8 лет назад
Leo S I was already thinking it would be something like the tradition thing you mention. Though, I think most things that need to line up would line up in a mixed-width font as well, considering indentation moves with constant steps regardless of font, and quite a few mixed-width fonts have fixed-width numbers, a.k.a. 23456789 lines up with 11111111 (unless you're using a different font to view this page than I am)
@monkiram
@monkiram 8 лет назад
+Leo S I have heard of some studies about which fonts are easier to read, but they looked at different things besides the spaces between letters that you're wondering about. Apparently it is more difficult to read text when it is fully justified and it is easier to read serif fonts than sans-serif fonts.

Found myself magically unsubbed to you. Life got busy, your channel almost slipped my mind, until I found myself in a difficult situation unable to make a decision. Sought help online on how to best to make decisions and remembered how your channel provided scientifically sound life advice in an interesting and understandable way. This video did prove somewhat useful, maybe I could refer to a cognitive bias checklist to aid decision making. Decision making would be an interesting topic for you to cover, hope you'll consider it! Thanks for the great videos :D Oh yeah, do you have any psychology books or resources you would reccomend?

The video quality is good, but the awareness is bad. Nobody's ever going to find this channel on their own. The best way to resolve this is, instead of waiting for your videos to percolate without help, to self publicize. Notice the last time one of your videos was noticed on a major online media outlet, it caused the particular video to accrue nearly three times the average view count for videos on your channel (search with quotes "On using Socratic questioning to win arguments : philosophy").
