Most important lesson: Having a 2-party-system is harming you. Most advanced democraties nowadays have moved towards a multy party system where 4-5 parties have a chance to be part of an elected government. This has a better chance of leading to a real "contest of ideas" - because you can't simple fight for "whatever is the oposite to the other partys opinion".

Here in Brazil we have multiple parties but they end up within two groups: right and left.
@sofusbudtz
@sofusbudtz 8 лет назад
From an outside perspective, this seems like a huge problem in the US. Here in Denmark we have a multiple party system, and even though the parties are divided into the right and left, it is mostly a symbolic gesture. If you stop thinking about politics as either being democratic or republican, but rather influenced by ideology, politics get much more nuanced. It is possible to break down every political agenda to its root ideology: Conservatisme, Liberalism and Socialism. a certain party can have influences from various parts of each ideology. instead of identifying yourself as a member of a political party, instead use ideologies to define your views on politcal subject. A better understanding of the roots of politics will help any democracy, which is why it confuses me that this stuff is not taught in American schools, as far as i know.

yeah, but in different degrees and policies. for example in the UK we have the left wing labour, liberal democrats and greens, and the right wing conservatives and UKIP.

we'll get there eventually. it has to happen naturally though, and the aftermath of this election might actually help change our mindset
@idnwiw

I think the election system plays also a big role: "First past the post" systems tend to favourize the big 1-2 parties and invites all kinds of cheating like drawing electioral districts that favour your side. A proportional system is much better at giving smaller parties a voice.

Ha, that's what your party says :p No seriously, I don't think you get a meaningful number if you want to express that as a percentage. That would be like 100 people on the planet, or something like that.

You forget one prejudice here. Using politics to change the world is only what one side wants. I'm not American, but I am pretty much what would be a conservative in the US. One way I noticed I am is, that in the last 3 elections, I always voted to blockade the parliament, to make it as hard as possible for the legislature to do something, because I expect them to screw very badly up on avarage. I always aimed to maximize opposition with my vote. The video is good, but what it says is not actually new to us right-wingers, and is it not new for us to hear it from left wingers. Which I assume proves the point of the video. It is very hard to look at the world without your political prejudice, e.g. "It's important for politics to accomplish something".
@JackvanHouwelingen
@JackvanHouwelingen 7 лет назад
You're right ; quote "It's important for politics to accomplish something". And what do want and often do accomplish is lobbying to create a juicy top jobb after they left politics . all 3 left , right , center politicians do that . from right i can understand it from center i can accept it but those left suckers are just hypocrites . started as an office worker att a union became president of the union , went into politics in of course a left party , became party leader won the elections so became prime minister , left politics and became member of the board at Shell oil company . A fucking traitor to what he has claimed to stand for .
@arthurobrien7424
@arthurobrien7424 7 лет назад
That is not logically connected to what I said, if you want to suggest that. You changed the topic. Sure, the populistic propaganda for politics to "accomplish something" is the main engine for corruption in politics. But that is not the only reason somebody pushes for that. Some honestly believe that. Also, I get no notifactions for answers. Neat, youtube.

That's why I love this channel, because it speaks of helpful ideas that I didn't know or you don't hear enough, and it even makes sense and is presented with good sources. I was a bit aware that behind most of the hot things, like sjw or politics are people with overblown personalities/identities (and everyone has identity, I have an identity, it's natural, I do stuff and write stuff to make me feel well of myself and imagine someone reads, I like the know thy self of this idea), but didn't know how well that shows winning in such statistics compared to sexism/racism/etc. And generally those are the ideas that I would like to be more out, the ones that you don't hear much but make sense of the human condition. We are all alone, trying to feel important by sticking to our evolved identities, infused by the culture, making friends and enemies, belonging and thinking we are special for fighting for something. I am not really against this, since it's in our nature and sometimes this is what motivate us to act, but being more aware of this could maybe prevent from going too overboard with our obsession.

It's still not that much though like 25.5% an increase but does this mean that we're truly divided on the level you implied in the video?
@Trepur349
@Trepur349 7 лет назад
However 72% of Democrats and 73% of republicans are married to someone of their own party, while only 9% of democrats and 15% of republicans are married to someone of the other party (rest are married to independents). So while not everyone is saying it's important, they end up marrying someone who shares their politics. The thing with bias is in most cases, people don't know they have biases and prejudices.
@DJ_POOP_IT_OUT_FEAT_LIL_WiiWii
I call BS, a 25.5% increase in weight is definitely more important than politics. Especially if you just tell her to shut up and who to vote for.
@DJ_POOP_IT_OUT_FEAT_LIL_WiiWii
+Trepur349 Your statistics don't make sense either. Given two similarly attractive prospect, are you gonna choose the one who bitches against your values? Only if she is the more attractive or richest one I believe. So politics have little to do in the end since people tend to marry people of similar attractiveness/social class or engage in some kind of trade of relationship between these two factors.

The only path to changing minds on politicized issues: Listen to the other side. Find a point (or at least sentiment) you agree on and mention it. And then, depending on the individual, you can bring up an opposing view. I'm finding that this takes a genuine relationship to get to this. Otherwise, political talks (and 98% of Facebook posts) are virtue signaling intended to get "your team" to approve.

We are competitive on many levels comprised of different stages. Stage 1 between consists of our friends and family on things such as affection, intelligence, and wealth. Stage 2 is local, which contains competition on our environment - based on things such as who has the better house, better job, and better schools. Stage 3 is regional, based on things such as 'best state' or 'best social norms', or 'best political view'. Finally, stage 4 is global, where we are competitive on a country wide level. Many people don't realise that no matter how hard you fight your neighbours or argue with them, in a regional level and global level whenever you attempt to argue you are better - you are arguing for those on lower levels as well. Its one of the petty issues with human society - you want to be the best in everything you are part of, and want to show it off, and yet we are willing to put aside our differences just to argue against opponents on a higher level. The only way for humanity to truly ever bond together is if we reach a 5th stage, a planetary stage, but in that case aliens would have to exist - so perhaps humanity will never meet eye to eye.
@dddmemaybe
@dddmemaybe 5 лет назад
You are smart but you would be a horrible teacher with that information transfer "pathing"! Maybe it's only that you are bad at using only-text or it's not your native language idk. Sorry if you are a teacher lol. I had to decrypt your information to get your meaning. 1) "Stage 1 between consists" -> the "between" makes it super confusing, likely wrong word idk. 2) Why are the stages ordered in this way? I had to finish reading to realize you mean the _scope_ of "people as communities" instead of as individuals. But going back to older information stalls the learning process and begets(asks for) a break of flow and denial of "mental information-acceptance" for a lack of a more fitting term. I'm not infinitely(hyperbole) better at teaching or sharing I thought I'd just add something even if on some random comment; it's a good "thought exercise" for myself. Also something better than Planetary stage is actually (at least potentially) to just dig down deeper into how an individual functions. So that we can uproot the problem(which is wrongfully-used "competition-like events" that breaks our political potentiality and political health) at its core.

This is the best video that I have seen in probably around three or four years BSP, thank you so very much. It's hard to prove to people that I consider myself truly neutral politically speaking, so I won't go into that, but I've been having serious difficulty understanding the hostility towards me over many years of debating political issues. I've never been a racist, a sexist, a gun-control activist or a non-believer(if you will) of climate change. I've just believed in the information that I could find, and(as close as possible) prove to be factual. Thanks for essentially giving me a cure to a very longstanding issue I've had with society in general. I'll be more understanding, and in turn I'll use this information to communicate better to others how I differ from their opinions if at all.

Really well done. If arguers used moral category labels anywhere near as often as they use political identity labels, I think conversational gridlocks would get dissolved far more often compared to what we see now. More importantly, if you're a welfare consequentialist, there can be no political sacred cows. There are only policies and procedural norms which happen to work (worthy of continuation) and those which happen to not work (worthy of discontinuation). Problem is, political junkies rarely (if ever) think along consequentialist lines. The overwhelming majority of them are oblivious to it and any other systematized theory of ethics. Much like with civics. Political Pragmatism > Political Ideology

As a centered libertarian, I usually just confuse people due to their expectations of me based on opinions that i've expressed to them prior. I have a mixed bag of "Conservative" view points as well as "Liberal" ones. I think each issue needs to be dissected on a case by case basis, the only problem is that this is a lot of work. So I could understand why people would rather pick a side.

I'm referring to it as a philosophy as opposed to authoritarian. Not the party.
@No_Avail
@No_Avail 8 лет назад
I think paternalism vs. anti-paternalism covers that ground far better than the vagueness of 'authoritarianism' vs. 'anti-authoritarianism'. Most political philosophers see their pet theory as being anti-authoritarian, but the theorist-next-door would decry *it* as being anything but (usually because it critiques or violates _his_ particular idiosyncratic notion of liberty). Same goes for the Folk. When I ask people to pinpoint where the _authoritarian_ line begins & where the _anti-authoritarian_ one ends, across different policies, I tend to get as many dissimilar answers as the number of people I ask. Ditto for intra-libertarian disputes over legitimate vs. illegitimate authority. If a term is that cheaply muddled, it deserves abandonment. Frankly, I'm more concerned with people's unwillingness to question unearned power in the household (i.e. parent/child) compared to democratically elected power in government.
@MrMycelium
@MrMycelium 8 лет назад
AntiBullshitMan You make some very good points. I suppose it is a very relative term. That being said, there are some that are pro- authoritarian. Usually they are the proposers of autocracies and believe that the individuals needs come second to the nation's/communities. Though, That collectivist mindset is far less common in the world now a day.

Mr. Mycelium I always find it hilarious when libertarian ancaps call tax-defenders (NAP violators) lovers of authoritarianism. They do this even when the tax-defender is a minarchist. Such high-mindedness and consistency, all while believing that humans have an inalienable right to torture non-human animals via factory farming, because non-humans don't qualify for moral-concern under their imagined "natural rights" scheme. @lexer_

I think there is another aspect to this problem. If you want your vote to have any impact you have to vote a big party. But this is the only contribution most people thing they can do so they have all their hopes and believes for the future tied to this vote. I think people start to justify their vote decision by supporting everything their party is saying because they don't want to lose their hope that they've done the right thing. I think it's an existential problem of the way political parties work. You have to vote something and implicitly accept all the decisions of this party to every problem that they ever will address. A root problem of all this could be the completely missing diversity in the political landscape. Maybe it even would be a good idea to be able to vote not just for a political party but for individual statements of different parties with a positive or negative vote. You could indirectly immediately see which areas are most divided and what bothers people the most in general. (just an idea of the top of my head)

Hey great video again. Yours is one of my favorite channels. I had a little problem with this video however. I couldn't understand the last paper/experiment. What is the conclusion? I tried watching it twice.
@BiteSizePsych
@BiteSizePsych 8 лет назад
The last paper was about how to change someone's mind on political issues. The idea was because political values are very close to our heart, we tend to be more defensive/biased when someone challenges them. This is true for any of our core beliefs (e.g. imagine arguing about religion, personal values, family/friends etc.) So, perhaps if we reinforce these core beliefs beforehand and buff up their self-concept, people won't be as defensive when challenged on political issues. Basically, I use it as evidence that politics, like religion, is another core belief that forms our identity. Hence it's very likely that when it comes to politics, our actions and behaviours will be more biased, more self-motivated and more irrational. Hope that helps.

The biggest problem I see is that issues over facts have become political arguments. No one can except that for somethings there is objectively a correct answer. Why is global warming political when the objective science points in a certain direction? Critical thinking is disappearing and fact based decisions are never based on what would actually be the best.

This video definitely resonates with me. I'm a conservative and a Trump supporter, and I run into a lot of vitriolic hatred online and in person when discussing politics. (As I'm sure people on all sides of politics face) Most of the time I spend discussing things with people are divided down those lines, and it's all pretty predictable. However, I'm not even that far right. I lean left on several political issues like legalizing drugs, gay rights, etc. One a political compass, I'm hardly off from center. The reasons I support Trump are more based on specific policies than personality or party lines. He's opposed to TPP, which is a big deal for me, and he wants to cut taxes across the board. I never really talk about these things with people though, because I'm too busy getting wrapped up in the battleground that is American politics; too busy arguing about personality and party lines than policy. It is definitely an impediment to real discussion.

The point at the end is really how we work. It's where the phrase warming someone up comes from. Flatter them, affirm their views, be on 'their side', and then comes the pitch.

Really good video. I honestly came into this video very skeptical and was getting ready to bring out the pitch forks. Goes to show that you are absolutely correct. It sounds ridiculous, but less so now, that the American war was more divided by Republican vs. Democrat instead of North vs. South as we all learn. Both are true, but some scholars have argued the political party divide was more responcible for the war than geography. Now I'm starting to believe that analysis a little bit more.

The issue comes in a single statement. Had a conversation with someone who told me and I quote "I have these kinds of discussion to change the opinions of others". I'm being honestly serious. And it gets me to thinking how many other people think in that same way. That when they speak they can change the minds of other people. To me it seems to be a position of naivety and ignorance. That people should not be focusing on trying to change the opinion of others. Merely to have a discussion that shares ideas, and shares opinions. Whether you agree or disagree should never be the point. The point is to find some kind of common neutral ground that sparks conversation. I find it much easier to have a discussion whether or not in the end you agree or disagree, as long as you took something out of the conversation. What your beliefs are, or what your political party is should not matter. What should matter is the common ground where everyone can agree on a small portion of one whole.

As someone doesn't fall in line with either major party (or either 'third party' really), I really appreciate this video. Thank you for trying to be as unbiased as possible in this. I always try to de-escalate a conversation as soon as the word "liberal" or "conservative" are dropped because it's the person immediately inciting this unbelievably strong bias. If I disagree with you and you're a "liberal" then I must be a "conservative" or vice versa.

Great video. I encourage everybody to learn about the stanford prison experiment, to understand how the situation and external forces would change people and how they act and react in a society as complex as ours today. The division in sides by the politics is not working cause its making people lose their identities to be part of a group, even though sometimes not all of the ideas are compatible with the person's opinion.

It's pretty damn weird watching a video with such well reasoned arguments seemingly use such terms as "social justice warriors" as if it has any meaning other than being a divisive slur word used against just about anyone expressing even the most remote sympathy for oppressed groups of people. Besides that, excellent video.

For me it seems ridiculous that people still believe in a wage gap. Regardless of who researches the situation and their political persuasion, we should only look at the evidence, not who is giving us the facts. The truth is, there is no wage gap, there is an average earnings gap due to a broad spectrum of variables, such as hours worked, time taken off work, position of job etc. Whatever people think of Islam, we must take into account the actions of members of their religion and the writings within their texts. There are extremists in any group, political, religious or anything, but when a surprisingly large number of Muslims want Sharia law in places like America and the UK, there is a problem, especially when systems like that actually do oppress women. *Sura **2:22**3:Your women are your fields, so go into your fields whichever way you like* Sura 4:24 says this about slave girls being sexual property. *And forbidden to you are wedded wives of other people except those who have fallen in your hands (as prisoners of war)* Regardless of my political persuasion, which I am not even sure of, the facts are still facts. So I implore people, don't defend something based on a media narrative, research for yourself and the truth will be shown. Political persuasion is unimportant when the facts aren't even there.

This is, by far, the most pertinent comment I've ever read about politics. The moment a 3rd party is allowed to join the race is the moment most things cease to be either black or white and become different shades of grey.

it is an especially an American thing. only thinking about tge extreme left or right. it would have been much better if Trump didn't run with the Republicans and Sanders not with the Democrats. that would have been a good change in the American electoral system.

I think it also applies in the rest of the world (albeit I don't know to what extent). I'm spanish and, even though we have more than two parties that have a prominent enough role in the politics of the country, the left-right divide is strongly ingrained in the people. I know quite some people that use "right-leaning" or "left-leaning" as an insult. And that's just absurd, especially taking into account that the traditionally left party and the traditionally right party are both pretty much in the center for all intents and purposes.
@CamelDance

It would be interesting to see how this works in different countries. In the US, you have two parties. In most European countries, there are five or more. Would political discrimination work the same way if there are more groups?
@timtomerson3402
@timtomerson3402 7 лет назад
A good way of fixing the bias, and actually focusing on issues, would be to introduce a neutral party to senate and congresse, which's sole purpose would be to represent bills etc. The party responsible for drafting the bill would be anonymous. To ensure that drafters and voters wouldn't be the same, you could have seperate representives working on each matter in turn. By using this process, you would also force drafters to be more moderate, as hard line positions would be recognised as such, and not be voted on by the opposing party.
