The crux of this is that most people (myself included) do not like to actually make completely open choices, and when given the chance to do so, will often take the easiest or most comfortable path, which is usually the one resulting in no changes. Something I find very useful is to do something that essentially takes the choice out of my hands by making one small move towards one direction or another. Say I have a lot of shopping I need to do, but I don't want to do it because it involves a lot of driving, standing in line, spending money, etc. If I am at home I will never suddenly be able to drag myself out of my comfort-zone, get into my car, and then go shopping. So, I make the decision easier by doing my shopping after leaving work. Instead of driving directly home, I go in the direction of where I need to shop. Instead of the seemingly-Herculean effort I need to make the choice to go on this shopping trip, the decision is easy: turn right or go straight. This is a bit like, "If I drive straight, I must go shopping." Once I've begun upon this path of heading toward shopping instead of toward home, I find it very easy to choose to continue doing this instead of turning around and heading back. This way, I'll actually get done what I need to get done.

Big difference that I have made in my life is to keep up a routine. Looking back now, I'm actually very surprised at how far I've come from my lazy life! I usually have a fixed time to have meals and they help me run my day on track. As usual, amazing video. Amazing content! And thanks a lot!

I suffer from pretty serious social anxiety. Part of what helps ease anxiety in other parts of my life, like schoolwork or engaging in hobbies, is to make a full-scale plan of what will happen when and what I will do in response to unexpected (or anxiety-driven) obstacles. I started doing the same thing for having to go check out at a grocery store or going to an event, and it's helped me to be more calm in the preparation and aftermath of the thing, helping me to get it done even if there's some discomfort in the process of doing it.

This does work, but I would add it is vital that you actually right it down and read it again if you faulter. Remind yourself why it mattered enough and why you are committed to doing it. And it can work on many other things, like remembering to appreciate ones partner or working towards a better job. It is important not to let it slip from the mind if it really matters to you. A post it note can be all that is needed to maintain the reminder. And often writing things down has greater impact than simply saying them or thinking about it.

the fact that I got to know that the 90% elements required to make our bodies are made out of stardust, so literally a star had to explode or die so that you could live. After hearing and reading such stuff you just, I don't know, you find more willpower within yourself and do that just extra bit to get better everyday. So yes as mentioned in your previous videos, we do have limited will power, or do we? I think the thing is not the amount the amount of will power we have but how we harness it, use it and you'll see for yourself that we do have tremendous amount of will power. That's just my opinion though. Cheers man, a great channel.

I drastically cut the sugar intake I was getting. Before, I could eat like 3-4 candy bars a day, drink coke, and sit behind a computer the whole day. Now, I don't eat any sugar (if I'm particularly desiring something sweet, I take one cookie, or 2 squares from a chocolate bar) and I'm exercising. I lost 70 pounds... Also, a lot of people tell me I looked better fat - the fuck's up with that?

Pushing past my perfectionism to get my Zazzle store (zazzle.com/ZeyovianPathways) going last November, that was a small change that hasn't made even a single sale yet, but it feels big in terms of how I feel about my art now. I'm able to appreciate my art as worth being sold, worth being on objects for sale -- blankets, clocks, even jigsaw puzzles now -- and that I don't have to wait for the perfect version to be able to post a reasonable version right now. Yesterday I finished up my first-ever jigsaw that's based on a photo of a person (my niece, several years ago), testing my image-editing skills and making a neat little story with the combination of photos. Looks like it'll be a challenging puzzle, too, because the floofy dress she's in shows up four times so you get to figure out which piece goes in which quadrant :) A similar step that made me feel better about the worth of my art was posting my poetry on my Deviant Art account. It's hard to push past the resistance and the "oh no it's not good enough" feeling but having done it once or twice it's much easier to keep going. Other small changes with big results have been mostly short-lived, which reduces the benefit. But I did cut soda out of my diet like a decade ago, figuring that since I didn't like the fizzy feeling all that much, why keep drinking it? That was a big chance and I think good for my health. Recently I've gotten back on it but I drink it maybe two per week (my friend stocks soda for our get-togethers), rather than all the time like I used to. Getting to the YMCA regularly was also great. Oh, and reaching out to some of my favorite authors when I was little. I got replies from at least two of them, and since I recently (at age 37 here) found out that one of them has been dead a long time, it feels even more special to have spoken with her when I was a teen, and gotten some encouragement at that time. Also reminds me that it's much better to reach out to the authors who don't have a big following, compared to those like J. K. Rowling who are huge, because I didn't realize at the time how rare it is to get personal attention from an author of any note. And I'm glad I didn't worry about it back then, or at least not worry about it enough to make me give up before getting started.

Were the studies specific about the permanence of the if-then plan? I had a couple of these plans in the past, for fun, and they were very effective. I eventually moved on though. I don't know why, and sometimes I ask myself if I should try again. But that's only me. Maybe some of the studies can give some insight.

This effect has been found to backfire for people who score high on a term called social perfectionism* according to three researchers**. I think you should add that with the video or else you'd risk making the lives of social perfectionists worse, to put it bluntly. I'm sorry for sounding so harsh but I believe incorporating caveats like these are important, and I'm Dutch; putting it blunt is what we do ;) I like your videos though, this one as well, very inspiring and I will implement it myself :) * from mosaicscience.com/story/male-suicide: If you’re a social perfectionist, you tend to identify closely with the roles and responsibilities you believe you have in life. “It’s not about what you expect of yourself,” O’Connor explains. “It’s what you think other people expect. You’ve let others down because you’ve failed to be a good father or a good brother - whatever it is.” ** Powers, T. A., Koestner, R.,& Topciu, R. A. (2005). Implementation Intentions, Perfectionism, and Goal Progress: Perhaps the Road to Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions. +M. Roest Can you elaborate on this? I've worked with trying to improve my habits and cope with depression through implementation intentions, but I often fail anyway. I keep my goals as small as they could reasonably be, I feel, and yet it's still insanely difficult to change my habits. I'm also totally a social perfectionist. And just a perfectionist more generally. In what way does this strategy backfire for people like me?
@melvin6228
@melvin6228 8 лет назад
+Hannah Elisabeth that I wouldn't know unfortunately. This video just got me interested so I looked up the wikipedia page as a quick/dirty introduction to the topic since this video was very very optimized for a compelling presentation (which I love, it allows for very quick and effortless learning). I did think about it though but I find it hard to understand why. I will read the paper, since I'm a student and it's behind a paywall (I only read the abstract). Maybe the authors say something useful about it, if they don't, then I really wouldn't know. I'll update the answer later.
@itisdevonly
@itisdevonly 8 лет назад
M. Roest Yeah, I tried looking it up, but with the article being behind a paywall I was unable to find any further info. Let me know what you find, 'cause I'm curious.
@melvin6228
@melvin6228 8 лет назад
+Hannah Elisabeth I looked it up now. My writing can be quite terrible since I'm paraphrasing them in my own words quite quickly. Sorry about that, I'm a bit on a time budget (I also only read the introduction section and the discussion section of the paper). This is definitely not my best writing, I hope it's helpful though :) The authors have several possible clarifications. It has to be said that none of these clarifications have been studied yet. The only thing that they know is that social perfectionists happen to not respond well to implementation intentions (most of the time this is where research stops unfortunately). Some interesting facts before that they also wrote: - implementation intentions mainly help for *difficult* goals - they furthermore are of more help to people with *poor* self-regulatory skills or who are easily distracted (they give as examples: schizophrenics, drug addicts and frontal lobe patients) - compared to frontal lobe patients implementation intentions help less for students (I guess they still do help though, just less) - self-oriented perfectionists do respond well to this goal setting strategy :) The authors thought before the study that social perfectionists would elicit self-criticism when they'd formulate a goal implementation plan. In other words, they'd judge negatively about their plans in most cases. So what they believed was in the way is the self-denigrating self-scrutiny that social perfectionists have over their goals. In that sense, it's not really the social aspect but more a negative rumination that impedes goal progress. Self-criticism and hypervigilance are a bad combination indeed. In their own words this explanation is supported, and I quote: "The idea that self-critical self-evaluation and/or concern about the harsh judgment of others can impede socially prescribed perfectionists who try to make implementation plans, however, received support in Study 2. "* Another explanation is that social perfectionists have a propensity to see the idea of making an implementation intention as a form of control from other people. *Cited from: Powers, T. A., Koestner, R.,& Topciu, R. A. (2005). Implementation Intentions, Perfectionism, and Goal Progress: Perhaps the Road to Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin 31 (7): 902-912, doi:10.1177/0146167204272311
@itisdevonly
@itisdevonly 8 лет назад
M. Roest Thank you! That's very interesting. I hope for more research in this area in the future. "implementation intentions mainly help for difficult goals" Well, what makes a goal difficult? (Not that I expect you to be able to answer that question.) I mean, the things I strive to do are objectively easy (like, take 15 minutes to meditate, or spend 15 minutes washing dishes), and yet, actually getting myself to stop procrastinating and avoiding and actually DO THE THINGS is extraordinarily difficult for me, though it seems like it shouldn't be. I don't know why it's such a challenge to do simple things, other than perhaps that I expect myself to fail and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy? "So what they believed was in the way is the self-denigrating self-scrutiny that social perfectionists have over their goals. In that sense, it's not really the social aspect but more a negative rumination that impedes goal progress. Self-criticism and hypervigilance are a bad combination indeed." Indeed! Welcome to my life. :-P Perhaps I should look into how to overcome social perfectionism. It's hard to feel a sense of owning one's own goals, since they inevitably feel like a way of filling a role or garnering social approval. It's hard to separate out what I want out of life from what kind of person I want or expect myself to be. I wonder if in these instances it comes back to an issue addressed by a different bite size psych video on how attempting to suppress negative thoughts backfires. Which really just makes me think the key to success is meditation. But what's the key to succeeding at actually getting myself to meditate regularly every day?

Generally I agree but to exercise when tired can't be healthy... Better to work on why tired (late night RU-vid....)

Through My Eyes Especially doing sport becomes dangerous like this, but also reading stuff for work makes little sense. I went through such phases when my job put me to my breaking point.

edi the point isn't that it always works: when you set goals this way consistently you end up actually doing them more often, which means you achieve more. it also works better if you're regularly reviewing what you did and what the result was, and if your goal is to recover quickly when you miss rather than to never miss.
