The thing about Rembrandt lighting is that there should be a soft edge shadow at the cheek (since it's a form shadow) while the cast shadow from the nose is hard edged.
- Introduces the information - Mentions some history - Spits pure knowledge - Refuses to elaborate - Goodbyes WHAT A LEGEND GUYS! I LEVELED UP MY SKILLS JUST BY WATCHING IT!
I found this method a few months ago, and truly each time I look at my face or sometimes others in sharp lighting, I can see the triangle This is even more prevalent in movies because of the deliberate lighting
I did this by accident when we were told to do lino cut self portraits and I've never forgotten since when my art teacher pointed out "hey you did this thing thats kinda cool"
I sort of got that the triangle is somehow created by the shape of the face, but didnt know how exactly to make it. I think I once tried to google it a long time ago but it didnt help much. But when you broke it down to “shadow on the side of the face + shadow on the brow + shadow of the nose” I finally understood
Thank you for the tip, been wanting to make this for some time, but I cannot take it seriously when you suddenly showed Saul Goodman's picture out of nowhere lmao. That picture breaks me everytime.
I love drawing this kind of lighting too, it’s just more fun and interesting! I had no idea it was called after Rembrandt tho, that’s a pretty cool fact
i accidentally picked this up at a young age from watching the dragon prince (which uses a lot of very hard rembrandt lighting) and didn’t know the actual term until i went to art school
we studied this lighting for a full term in my first and second year of college so whenever i see it now i say "rembrandt" before i can even register what;s in front of my eyes
