I remember when I finally got passed the second level I was so overcome with happiness I had no idea what to do.

Adult me is angry at this game right now. Elderly me will be angry at this game in the future. I only played the SNES version, so all I can say is: Fuck the monkey level. Fuck this game.

I loved this game as a child. It was so difficult, but I finally managed to beat it.

They purposely made the second level harder, this was back at the time when companies were fighting Blockbuster with renting out video games. The whole idea was to make it so hard that in order to beat the level you would need to own the game to have enough time to master the level

The amazing thing is that company that made this game would go on to make Command and Conquer.

Just for reference, The Lion King is basically "Lions perform hamlet" so the Lion King 1.5 is a reference to "Rosencrance and Gildenstern are dead" which is about the comedy relief characters are doing off screen during hamlet.

The Genesis was a weird case when it came to the sound..... It eather freaking amazed you or really disappointed you.....there was basically nothing in between

God, I remember me and my friends playing the SNES version a lot back in the day. The Lion King was to the mid 90's what Frozen has been to the last 5 years or so. It was EVERYWHERE!!!

An AVGN Lion King Episode would be awesome, especially playing the SNES version with by going over the poor jump detection and hit detection in certain levels and comparing it to the Sega Genesis version.

I always played the SNES version, and it was good. Very hard, and entertaining at the same time.

I remember renting the Snes version a lot as a kid, and I could never get to Adult Simba. My experience with the second level and beyond were rough. It's refreshing seeing the game played with ease after so long.

I love, what they did with the ’Easy Mode’ in Lion King. They gave you 9 lives (because 0 counts), and Simba’s a feline. Get it? 🦁

I had the SNES game as a kid...in 2001. This damn monkeys level was my hell. Eventually I got so depressed about it my mom called Nintendo customer service to complain, and stayed on the line so long they offered to mail her a coupon for half off a gamecube if she'd stop yelling...and that's how I got a gamecube for christmas!

I could never beat this damn game

My friend and I saw a playthrough of this game here on youtube. It sounded like a little girl playing the game and when she would die she would shout and curse. We only saw it once and we have been trying to find it ever since. We still bring it up from time to time!

My suggestion: Do an AVGN episode on a whole bunch of Disney games, including "Lion King", "Beauty and the Beast", and also "Fantasia" on Genesis!

I remember wanting this game for Genesis back around 1995. My mother got it for me for Christmas. Christmas morning. I open it, excited to play it. I stick it in the Genesis, doesn't work. I looked at the metal connectors and most of them were missing. The game was bought from Target. My mother goes shopping that morning and returns the game, getting a replacement. She calls from the store (we didn't have cell phones back then, so she actually called from Target's electronic section) and says they don't have another copy of The Lion King, so she gives me some choices to choose from and one of them is Power Rangers: The Movie for Sega Genesis. I chose that one. She came home with that one and I played it. I was so happy The Lion King didn't work because this Power Rangers game is undoubtedly the best Power Rangers game ever made. It was absolutely wonderful. Later on, the closest I came to playing The Lion King was at a cousin's house for his SNES. Didn't make it past the second stage as stated in this video.

This was by far the hardest SNES game that I owned, and wish I had owned the Genesis version since that seems to be sort of a revision that ramps down the difficulty. I owned the official Player's Guide that I bought at the grocery store out of frustration after trying to beat level 2, which did help with that but I obviously still had to complete all of those jumps. Eventually I got to the level with all of the volcanoes but could never beat that one and gave up trying to beat the game. I was around 10/11 years old and it still haunts me.

Fun Fact: The Lion King was the highest grossing film of my birth year of 1994.

I do remember the SNES version had a dedicated button for throwing (needed to defeat Scar), whereas on the regular Genesis controller it was a button combo of some kind that was harder to execute, which made the final boss battle on SNES WAY easier. Edit: Mike explains this at the end.

Fun fact. On the top label of the cartridge they have the number for the Sega Hotline! They knew this game was hard!

So James was able to figure how to be decent at the giraffe level before Mike was finished explaining it to him. I remember in 1994 thinking I was so awesome cause now I was 10 years old. And then here comes my cousin with this game and he was like "you should let me do the stampede for you, you're not gonna beat it and you're gonna cry." So I did it myself and I lost and cried, lol.

Loved this game. Was an adventure to beat and re-beat, the Dark Souls of my childhood, where you just had to git gud

Unfortunately, I was that 9 year old. This was the only game I got for my birthday that year. I played this game non-stop and did beat it on SNES. It's my claim to fame as a gamer.

Seeing that second level activated my PTSD. I beat that second level after 100 tries and some tantrums.

Loved this game on SNES when i was a kid...i got it for chritmas when i was 9 or 10...love this game

The Gorilla in Hakuna Matata was the roadblock for me, mainly because one guide made me think rolling the coconuts back at him was the only way to beat him, when in fact all you had do was dodge the coconuts and jump on him when he pounds the ground.

I played the hell out of this game on PC, no cheats. The hardest part was figuring out how to beat Scar without any help or reference. In 95 was friggin hard and only managed to do it once.

Would AVGN review the SNES version

I'm going through a really shitty time right now and for some reason watching these videos and just knowing that James is out there getting to use his brilliant and creative mind and bring happiness to so many fans with his hilarious thoughts and observations makes me know that everything will be ok. I've been a fan right from the start and I can imagine it might start to feel like a drag to keep making theses videos, and it's your choice if you ever do elect to kill the nerd; but however you do feel about it your videos will always mean a lot to a shit ton of people :)

I was that one 9 year old.. I beat this game off of a 2 day rental on the SNES from blockbuster. I don't remember the "can't wait to be king" level giving me trouble. It was the one with the thorn bushes running away. I had to spend a lot of time figuring that level out. After I got adult Simba, it was cake until I got to Scar. I remember getting frustrated because I kept measuring him up but he wouldn't fall. It felt like forever before I figured out tossing him off the edge worked, which afterwards made perfect sense considering the movie.

I never really had trouble with the second level when I was a kid and I was playing the snes version as well. Then again these are the same guys who were having trouble with Donkey Kong as well

One of the best movie tie in games and made by Westwood studios who made the command and conquer games.

This reminds me of the Toy Story game on Genesis where you have to use Woody's pull string to swing on hooks in many stages. Difficulty aside, these games incorporate scenes from the movies quite well

The Snes version is far superior!

the reason James had such a disconnection with TLK is because he was a heck of lot older when this film came out- unlike most of his fan base which grew up with the series

Every article I looked up told me the SNES version was superior, but I remembered this video when I bought the rerelease. None of the articles explained what Mike talking about. Id trust Mike more than the internet at this point.

Played the sega version. That one was hard enough. Never beat it. Aladdin was the best

I was on safari a few years back and it was cool to see juvenile lions hopping on the heads of giraffes and riding on the backs of ostriches. This game is so true to life.

Oh man I just got ptsd from watching that clip from Mike's playthrough at the end there. Those pillars at the final level had horrendous hitboxes and I died so many times.

As a kid I could get to the the lava level when you are adult simba but couldn't get past it. I tried the game again 20+ years later and beat the game! (Genesis version)

I don't remember how old I was when I played this game as a kid, but most of the parts isn't as hard as people make it. The monkeys are obviously different colors which means something, and the thing you are dodging when double jumping are the bird nests. It isn't about jumping at the right time, you need to dodge certain objects.

This game was so hard when I tried playing it at my cousin's house in the 90s.

I would rather play the Snes version than watch the 2019 remake. 100%!

I really did beat this game when I was like 9 or so, but I had to look in GamePro or something to figure out how to get up that damn waterfall.

I remember playing this game on the Game Gear. Played it once on the SNES, but never beat it because it was hard. But I did beat the Game Gear version.
