When she went up to sing, and danced instead, and then the other girls laughed at her... I couldn't help but cry. I wish the movie had been this deep and beautiful...
When Triton demanded "What have you done to my daughter?!" Ursula should have replied, "What you failed to do - I made her happy." Or something else like that, what do you think? Besides, Ursula really did make Ariel happy when she made her human to spend time with Eric and see the human world, after all the hell Triton gave her when he destroyed everything she loved.
I have to admit, I will always like Vanessa for the movie, but the Contest scene for the Broadway show is equally as compelling. Even though Vanessa doesn't appear in the musical, they still use a similar kind of concept, Eric hearing Ariel's voice in the distance and thinking it's someone else. But this time, he ultimately says "Tell her she's too late, I've made my choice". It's similar to what he does in the movie, just without being hypnotized. Remember, he is about to choose Ariel when Vanessa shows up singing with Ariel's voice and putting Eric into a trance. Ursula singing with Ariel's voice and pretending to be another contestant is what I believe to be Broadway's version of the "Vanessa" concept, and I've gotta say, it's very well done.
regarding the comments about not having vanessa: thats something that they rendered too hard to do. to get sherie out of ursulas costume and into something that "vanessa" would wear was too much of a time commitment. also they couldnt make her get all big and then have to boat stab her. this is a stage production. its hard to do cinematic things like that.
(Eric) That's the voice! (Grimsby) Well, let's get her at once! (Eric) No. The contest was until sundown. She's too late. **I'm so glad he really does choose Ariel in this version! :'D**
i actually really like the idea of ariel having more agency here in that she's the one who defeats ursula. ursula's not defeated by ariel smashing the shell on its own, but the fact that she underestimated ariel and didn't believe that she would do it. however, i'm in total agreement that we should have seen vanessa here, even if played by a different actress. here, all the humans just accept that ursula "brought the sea with her" without blinking an eye. it's weird. there's way too many elements of this production, particularly the blocking, costumes and choreography that make it come across as hokey and therefore not as magical and effortless as the producers intended. as a lot of people have mentioned, some of these things are an easy fix, but sierra boggess and sean palmer have great chemistry that helps make up for what the show lacks overall.
I actually kinda like the fact that Eric loves Ariel based on her just being herself in this version than in the film version. Now that actually showed moral details of finding true love for someone than just a personal trait. That and the fact that they've re-wrote Ursula's demise in this scene.
Me too, but u forget. In the film Eric was about to confess his love to Ariel right when he got hypnotized by Vanessa. If u ask me, he would have kissed and married her voice or no voice if not for Ursula’s influence.
I don’t think this version is that funny, but I love it when schools do the contest, it’s absolutely hilarious. They’re practically falling all over each other, and they all sound awful. It’s great.
I don't understand why everyone is getting worked up about costumes and who's in it. Why can't you just watch it and appreciate all the talent that came together for the sole purpose to entertain you?
I REALLY wish I could've had the privilege of seeing this(whether in pre-broadway or on broadway..definitely would've LOVED to have seen it once Drew Seeley took over as Eric..Sean Palmer is great,I'm just ENAMORED by/with Drew Seeley)!Thank you SO MUCH for uploading these videos Julie Winchester! I GREATLY appreciate that I get to see this in some way!Watching this has brightened my day! This is/was SUCH an AMAZING show&I wish it was still playing so I could see it!Everyone in it is FANTASTIC!
This is really extremely better then the original cartoon because is more sadder from the movie and much more calmer in this one is nothing compared with the movie there’s no contest which one which
@bart11114 You missed the point. This is supposed to be a character-driven moment for Ariel. This is the moment where Ariel makes her choice to possibly sacrfice her life for her kingdom. Her guilt for being so manipulated & self-centered was stronger her desire to be human. It was her choice how this battle would end.
They know its possible, but not everything stays the same in the Disney Stage versions. Maybe it was cut for time, or they just didn’t need that plot line for this version to get the same story and ending. It would have been amazing if they had done it, however. Also, Disney on Ice is never too high quality. I’m sure it wouldn’t fly as well on stage as it did in a hockey stadium.
A giant Ursula would've been to hard to create every single night AND include on the eventual national tour, especially a giant Ursula that's stabbed to death with a ship and explodes/sinks. However, I just wish that they made it so Ariel had to -really- work hard to steal that magic shell; she just walks up and takes it. If it was so important, I don't think Ursula would just let it sit there. I also wish that there was more emphasis on the part where Ariel might die if she breaks it.
@JexNexSaisxQuoi yeah, all the girls and guys (except leads of course) plays about three roles, the guys are sailors eels fish and soldiers while the girls are contestants maids and mersisters
@00Nessa00 I do too! I love how Vanessa is a popular character even though she's just a clever disguise Ursula used. I think it's because she was really pretty and evil which isn't common in Disney movies AND it was so cool that she had a short song of her own with Ariel's voice.
Hi there. I was wondering if you remember the scene where Ursula show and Ariel, Eric Grimsby and Carlotta are all wondering who Ursula is and Eric who is she and what does as what Ursula tells them. Ariel goes to the other side of the stage. Then king Triton shows up. While all this time eric, grimsby and Carlotta are still on the stage what are they going. Is Sean still acting like Eric. Please get back with me.
Keep in mind, this was the pre-broadway script. Imagine a demo for a videogame--they need to check for bugs (bugs being bad scenes/songs) that they cut or change to make the show better. Granted the Broadway version is still not very similar to the MTI script, it is much more similar than this.
I like this version better than the re-worked Broadway version in some ways. I like Ariel not getting her voice back and all, but I also like how's she's turned back into a mermaid and Ursula like, tempts her with the idea of being a human again. I think I just like this death better. idk, something about this one just rolls better.
in the broadway show, they changed it so Ariel changes back to her mermaid tail...except they use a double for part of this scene until Sierra is changed.
@wiikid41 Well to be fair this ending is more faithful to the Hans Christinan Andernson Fairy-tale as opposed to the film which took a completley different direction.
While the live action remake uses the same idea in this play to make Ursula Ariel's aunt, I wish they also used the idea in revealing that Ursula was the real one who killed Ariel's mother and not a human.
@pokemonumbreon1 none know for sure, but Triton seems to act more like the older brother type, while ursula's underhanded sneakiness is the kind of attitude one has to have to get back at someone growing up who's older and bigger.
@bart11114 The only reason for her death this way is because it would be a bit too hard to make her a giant and stab her with a boat :/ But I understand what you mean it is a bit cliche
@BubblegumPopMusic13 I'm happy that I'm not the only one who felt that way. I love the musical's costumes and songs but I think the story felt much more balanced in the movie and I liked the characters more in the movie.
@vamprix97 actually, if you pay careful attention, the ocean was split between the two of them. Then ursula went evil and Triton took her half away from her.
did anyone notice how when the Prince cried out Ariel's name sounds exactly like the Prince Eric in the disney movie ( 6:40 for those who wonder what I'am talking about)
The way they killed Ursula here is so lame. Smashing her shell? Really? And it's not like there was a struggle, which would've made it somewhat suspenseful. Ariel just goes up to her and snatches it without a fight. So anticlimactic. In fact, this show left a lot to be desired, and it had so much potential.
Compared to Aladdin, this is much more satisfying. Jafar doesn't even turn into a giant cobra, nor does he put up any fight at all. He's only turned into a sultan, tricked into becoming a genie and then poof. gone. The only cool part about it was his on stage costume changes into the sultan and genie. I wish though, that Ursula would have at least been lifted up a bit with a larger version of her tentacle dress around her. It would have felt more like the movie then.
