Top 5 Best & Worst Animated Films of 2022 

Despite all the love that Puss in Boots 2 has, it's sad that everyone overlooked Florence Pugh's masterful voice work as Goldilocks. Pugh is one of the best actresses working today and she crushed it with this role. Probably one of my favorite voice acting performances in an animated film and I find Goldilocks to be a criminally underrated character.

I like how the 2 best animated films of this year (Puss in boots the last wish, and Guillermo's Pinocchio) kinda dealt with dark subject matter like Death, and living your life to the fullest/appreciating the life you have with the people around you

Face it, Disney. Netflix gave us the Pinocchio we deserve.

It’s kind of funny how Dreamworks and Netflix debatably did better than Disney this year, at least animation wise.

I really liked The Bad Guys. Sadly, it was also the last animated film my mom ever got to watch before she passed away in August 😿

To say 2022 was a turbulent year for animation, would be an understatement!

Aside from the unfortunate stories of many animated shows and films getting cancelled, I will say that this was easily the best year for theatrical animated films, since 2019!

Outside of the current unfortunate events going on this year, at least 2022 was a great year for animation especially a huge library from mixed to masterpiece animated films. I’m honestly excited to see the 2023 films this year especially with Mario, Spider Verse, Elemental, and Wish

I have to politely disagree with your line-up - I felt like the writing for Wendell & Wild was just too messy to ignore and it took a lot away from the final product while with Bad Guys, I loved the characters enough and still had so much fun with it that I was able to forgive a somewhat predictable story. So yeah, I probably would've have switched those two on the line-up personally. I definitely agree with the choice to put Puss in Boots 2 near the top though, that movie is just INCREDIBLE.

I agree with basically this entire video. Except for the placement of the dreamworks movies. The bad guys should definitely be in the top five, and although the story was predictable there were plenty of fun twists and some really good development and character chemistry. Puss in boots the last wish on the other hand is just so good. I recently watched it for the second time and I really do think it’s the best animated movie of the year. Although Pinocchio was good, and it admittedly made me cry, I felt like the plot was a bit all over the place. Something super serious and dark like kids in a war camp being bombed would be followed by getting swallowed by a giant fish? Not to mention the old man was missing for a good 30-40 minutes. I get it, it’s fiction, and I can tell there was a lot of directive freedom in the movie, but it felt a bit all over the place. But the morals and themes, and just how dark it could get while staying barely pg definitely made it a good movie. Just not better then puss in boots. Puss in boots had all sorts of scenic messes, and a clutter of characters, but it all somehow just worked. I wouldn’t argue a single character got more or less screen time then they should, and even though there was so much going on theme wise it was just balanced out perfectly. The animation, the characters, the voice acting, the villains, everything was great.

Here's what I say: 2022 was a great year for animation, on streaming as Netflix put out not only great animated films, but animated films that showcase the power of alternative forms of animation like 2d and stop motion. The most notable ones to me were The House, The Sea Beast, My Father's Dragon and Del Toro's Pinocchio. In terms of theatrical animation however, the year was weak as DreamWorks basically carried the year with two of their all time best in The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Turning Red was entertaining but had none of the heart or emotion that a Pixar film should have and Strange World and Lightyear were just awful. The rest that came out were just forgettable. Judging from this year, I'm hoping that alternative forms of animation, as well the great mixture of 2d and 3d like we we saw with DreamWorks films this year can become popular again. I honestly thought this year was a pretty good year for animated films since there was so much variety even though there were a couple of stinkers. But the entertainment/animation industry on the other I will agree it was one of the worst.

Even though you gave both Transformania and Buck Wild the same rating (with the numbers being the same). I'd predict that Buck Wild would be #1 because it's continuing a franchise that was long past being extinct while Transformania at least knew when to end Edit: I was wrong

I did NOT expect The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild AND Hotel Transylvania: Transformania to be the worst films of 2022! I was surprised by that because that has NEVER happened before. Normally, there is only one film as the worst.

2022 was a pretty prosperus year for animated films, some of them may have been good and others not great but the amount of animated movies that were made this year was very good and may the animated films for 2023 be good too!

Imagine if Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio got a Best Picture nomination

At least two of the years best films came out in December. Guillermo Del Toro had a pretty good year all things considered with Pinocchio and the Cabinet of Curiosities.

Sadly I haven't seen all of the films this year 😞 I have been pretty busy since it was my first year as an adult. Graduated high school, entering college, practice driving, getting my passport, getting a job. As I grow older I have to spend less time with animation. But I that doesn't mean I will ever stop enjoying it. In fact it's my major, I'm so excited for this new area of it and I can't wait to see more of it.

6:04 Despite the AWFUL animation and some mean-spirited moments, I actually really like this movie. It's pretty heartwarming, has good chemistry between Greg and Rodrick and most importantly, it's a HUGE improvement over the first film.

Even with the weaker films, they are still leagues better than what we got in the past, especially in the 2010s. Not once did I consider one film out right bad and some I consider okay at best. This, to me, is a really good sign for animated films!

2022 was a pretty good year for animated movies imo. So here are my top 5 fav animated movies from this year: 5. Turning Red 4. Lightyear 3. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Doesn’t count as an animated movie but whatevs) 2. Minions: The Rise of Gru 1. Notice how the #3 best of 2021 and 2022 are from Pixar. You'd see Pixar's previous work on the transition and then Turning Red. They're both similar since they have the same animation style and AniMat gave them the same rating with the story, animation, and characters.

I love how AniMat took a jab at the infamy that was that was Mr.Enter’s take on Turning Red.

Also, again, Mr. Enter was criticizing the lack of school security in a movie meant to be a homage to 2002 (i.e post-2001). Then again, he made a video about critics where he took his 9/11 comments back.

My predictions are Hotel Transylvania 4 is gonna be the Number 1 worst and either that Pinnochio version is gonna be number 1 or Last Wish. Turning Red will make the bottom half of the best list and Windell and Wild will either also be there or an honorable mention. Paws of Fury will obviously be on the worst list if not 1. Bad Guys will be an honorable mention. Lastly Strange World would be towards the bottom of the worst half or an honorable mention. I can't wait to see if my predictions are right! I love watching these every year. Edit: Wait I completely forgot about DC Super Pets. In that case, Strange World doesn't have a chance at getting on the worst list, which is good cause I liked that movie.

I agree with your list for sure. Bad Guys was a favorite of mine but the story was a little predictable. Nevertheless, this was an iconic year for animation. Great video as usual

“Some lucky ducks, get all the luck!” Transitions to luck, was that intentional?

considering that Luck of all things was Skydance's first film Brad Bird's Ray Gunn better not suck!

Even though I found the first scene with Death too be a little bit to obvious because 1 Erie whistling, 2 a strange hooded figure, 3 he has red eyes, 4 Death being a grey wolf and 5 his main weapon being sickles. However just because it was obvious doesn’t mean it was bad because everything I just listed is what also made the scene amazing. His whistle is discomforting yet also kind of peaceful like Death is singing one last song to you before you die. His sickles suit him perfectly and the choice to make him a wolf very much suits the Puss In Boots world. His red eyes are nice and menacing and his masterclass of skills that immediately show Puss that he’s outmatched truly make the introduction scene to Death even better. Instead of getting another cool fight that Puss wins we get to see a fight that Puss cannot win with an Enemy he cannot yet beat. Just making Death all the More terrifying because now the audience knows that If Death ever does finds Puss there will be nothing Puss can do except run while being chased by a merciless hunter.

This has to be the best end of the year list you’ve done. I agree with you on most of these . I’m also glad that the beginning about the other stuff in the year was quick so anyone who doesn't like to hear about that stuff can enjoy this too. Of course I do understand your opinion on talking about politics but this felt very open to anyone. Out of all the films of 2023, I’m most excited for Super Mario. Finally Its that time again! Love watching these videos every year and personally Turning Red is my movie of the year overall! I really need to watch Puss in Boots so bad when it comes out on Blu ray!

As crazy as it was behind the scenes for animation (well, this year was nuts in general, though I'd say personally it had at least _some_ bright spots) it's nice to see that the films themselves continue to go strong! I'm definitely hyped for that Mario movie, I must say..

To me this year was alright. Felt bad about those who had it rough due to Russia giving Ukraine a bad time. But certainly this was the year where humankind found out that the biggest animation companies are getting greedy with all the canceled proyects and eliminated shows. Oh well, the fact that the best animation content and news came at the end of the year is a flicker of hope. Del Toro’s Pinocchio was beautiful.

I think in terms of 2023 I'm most interested to see what Illumination turns out, mainly because the Super Mario Movie seems to be actually trying (whether that's because Nintendo is also involved I don't know) and I hope it turns out Great, not perfect but Great as it could Signal a change in how Illumination handles movies. Because they have shown only once (Maybe twice depending on how your opinion of sing 2 that is) that they can make decent films, with that one time being despicable Me 1.

My favourite this year is undoubtedly the bobs burgers movie. I'm biased anyway since I'm a huge fan of the series, but it's been years since a film has brought me so much joy. This is the year my mental health finally took a turn for the better, and with the bobs burgers movie as my new comfort film, I know things will only keep improving from here. This is also the year my daughter was born and I'm so excited to watch it with her once she can actually pay attention and take it all in.

I enjoyed Strange World, I feel like the writing could've been stronger but I'm a sucker for spec-zoo sci-fi and Indiana Jones stuff! My favorite of the year has to be Puss in Boots 2, it was well written, had amazing action sequences and a solid art direction (I love the 2D influence) and I'm biased because Puss was always my favorite Shrek character

Some of them I am personally excited for are: Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 Dune Part Two Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Creed III Wonka Shazam! Fury of the Gods and my the movie I’m looking forward to seeing the most in 2023… Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One.

The thing about the Bad Guys was (as said in the video) is was a bit predictable at times. But I was fully expecting Puss to die at the end of his movie, and was very happy when he didn‘t, but simply came to terms with dying at some point. I felt that was better than just straight up dying

Aside from the noteworthy phenomenal films this year, we also got some underrated gems such as Beavis and Butthead Do the Universe and ROTTMNT the movie.

The fact that the Pinocchio despite having happy ending is not a happy ending is masterpiece.

Here are my thoughts on the upcoming animated movies for 2023: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - Sorry Sonic, but it looks like you got some serious competition with this movie. And as for you Illumination, I can definitely see why Nintendo trusted you with this. :) Nimona - It lives, IT LIVES!!!!! Eat that, Chapek! High in the Clouds - Looks like fun. The Monkey King - I personally don’t know much about the legend, so we’ll see. Across the Spider-Verse - Frick yeah!!! :D Elemental - Looks interesting. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - Looks like it could have potential. Spellbound - Eh, I think I’ll pass on this one… Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie - Another Paw Patrol movie? Actually, we had FOUR animated Pinocchio movies released this year. There’s Pinocchio and the Water of Life, which had Tom Kenny as the starring role. It’s also the second one produced from Russia.

The sea beast is hugely underrated imo. It’s really entertaining and engaging all the way through. The animation is absolutely stunning and it has some really great emotional beats/ thematics. I honestly think it was just under advertised so it doesn’t really get the credit it deserves.

To me, 2022 has been a year were we wanted to escape from reality as mush as posible so I´m glad that we got alot of good animated movies that helped us with that. However I think many of the big companies had been bad with making us exited for there projects and if you werent keeping up with animation news you would esay miss som good ones, I mean Disney had there bigest flop in years with "Strange word" and all I got from them was one weak teaser and nothing else. But anyways, here are my favorites from this year: 5. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Animation great, the threat was felt throgh out the movie and all the main leads were likeble (I thought the dog was gonna be anyoing but he was just a good boy). I really like the wolf villian due to him having such a great timidation aura and a really god polt twist) 4. Turning Red A movie that took me back to the time when I was a teenage girl in the 2000. although there was many time I felt second hand emberensment from Mei´s mothers action overeall it was a great and sometimes even boltsy story about growing up. 3. The Bad Guys This movie was funny, sweet and it was beautful to look at. Sure the story was a little cliche but with so many likeble character, I hope to see a possible sequel. This movie is just what I need in a time of escapism. 2. Del Toro's Pinocchio Probably the best whriten story I seen this year with intresting setting and a bittersweet ending. there was no contest to which Pinocchio movie was the best. 1. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the movie As a fan of this version of the boys this was a highly anticipated movie that deliver on all front. The stakes was big, the animation was at all high, with the fightscen being the highligt and it left me wanted more of them (to bad that Nickelodeon dident them a chance to shine). You don´t have to see the series but it leave you with some extra content. If you ever want to review this movie AniMat you can find it on Netflix :) Now I hope 2023 will be better and I´m looking forward to many of them (espasally to the mario movie, spiderman sequel and the new TMNT movie)

Puss In Boots The Last Wish is the best movie of 2022 for me

Imagine if Shrek 5 has similar animation to the new Puss in Boots movie. That would be amazing!

2022 was a great year for animated movies, but I am excited for 2023 because of the Mario movie and the Spider Verse sequel!!

I only had the opportunity to see 2 of these movies, one being Turning Red and the other (unfortunately) being that Ice Age sequel. Should be kinda obvious which one I enjoyed more. As for what's coming up tho: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - Hoooo boy, we got a big one here; hopefully it'll be fun. Nimona - I'm guessing this almost got cancelled? Idk what's the hype for this one particularly but should be cool I guess High in the Clouds - This should be good! The Monkey King - Ehh, we'll see Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse - This is setting up to be even better than the first already and I am SO HYPED FOR IT. Elemental - I really like where this is heading. We'll see how it turns out. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - Should be fun! Spellbound - I think I'll skip this one PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie - Idk about this one Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget - Yeah no one really asked for this, but I faith in Aardman Trolls 3 - Okay, definitely skipping this one. Wish - Just don't get it confused with the cruise ship. Migration - Idk...

I really enjoyed all of the films on the Best list and liked the ones I saw among the Honorable Mentions. The only Worst entry I've seen was that "Buck Wild" spinoff (I was binging through the Ice Age franchise btw) and it stunk. Good thing the "Scrat Tales" shorts more than made up for that. As for the upcoming films: The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Reach for the stars Nintendo and Illumination Nimona: Long live the last sample of Blue Sky High in the Clouds: Never heard of this one, but being based on a book by one of the Beatles seems interesting The Monkey King: I'm curious about this new take on the titular figure Across the Spiderverse: Let's hope Sony spins this new web as well as their last one Elemental: After seeing the trailer, I can't wait to see how these opposites attract TMNT Mutant Mayhem: I'll keep my fingers crossed on this iteration of the turtles Spellbound: At least the visuals look nice Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie: Not my cup of tea, but I'm sure little kids will enjoy it Chicken Run 2: Hooray for more Aardman! But did this really need a sequel? Trolls 3: Never saw the other "Trolls" movies, so I don't think I'll be seeing this one either Wish: I'm wishing for the best with this one, both for the story and the 2D elements Migration: This could be cute, but I'll wait and see

My thoughts on the upcoming/possible animated films of 2023: The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Looks like I'll have fun seeing this. Nimona: Cool. High in the Clouds: I never read the book, so we'll see. The Monkey King: I'm not sure. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: The hype is still on! Elemental: This looks good. TMNT Mutant Mayhem: Wait, the turtles are back in theaters as an animated movie since the 2007 version? Spellbound: Not interested. Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie: I was not expecting the dogs would come back to the big screen. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget: I like the original movie, so I'm interested to check it out. Trolls 3: I want to go back to the Shrek Universe. Wish: So beautiful! Migration: One of the directors of "Ernest and Celestine" is making this? Interesting.

If I would rank the ones that I’ve seen this year from worst to best; 7: Lightyear 6: Strange World 5: Wendell and Wild 4: The Bad Guys 3: The Bob’s Burgers Movie 2: Turning Red 1: Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio (Please release on DVD or Blu Ray eventually 🙏) Puss in Boots 2 unfortunately isn’t being released in the UK until February so I can’t add that one yet. (I have one question for God; WWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!) The others I mostly weren’t interested in and the only other notable movie I watched was the Disney Pinocchio remake which considering the original is not only my favourite Disney animated film, but next to Fantasia it’s also my favourite film in general of all time, that film was just a complete and utter insult and easily now up there with The Lion King remake as one the worst films I’ve even seen. The only two animated films next year I’m really familiar with and are excited for so far are Mario and Spiderverse 2. Like Matt, I’m more excited for Mario because of my personal bias of being a huge Mario and Nintendo fan for much of my life, but Spiderverse is also on high priority as well. (As long we don’t die next year from a possible nuclear attack or from heatstroke after the summer weather we had this year) Happy new year anyway!
