The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) sit down with Collider to talk about their whirlwind career in comedy and music. A childhood friendship in Berkeley, CA transformed into a hugely-successful career on Saturday Night Live, where "digital shorts" went viral, beginning with Lazy Sunday, and led to cult-status feature films, Hot Rod, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Next up is Palm Springs, produced by the trio and starring Andy Samberg, which premiered at Sundance in January 2020 to rave reviews and a record-setting bidding war. It drops on Hulu July 10th.

Well, my personal favorite experience with Lonely Islands is working at Bonnaroo 2019, setting up their stage and equipment prior to their performance. Andy Sandberg was very personable and seemed excited to perform. I watched him walk towards the stage, scheduled to talk with winners of a contest, meeting Lonely Islands backstage. He seemed very genuine and present during the entire night, with them admitting to it being their first festival performance. I have always been a casual fan of their humor, but now I consider to be more of fan of their decision-making and personalities; for what it's worth, they have my respect.

Yeah, it's really heartbreaking to see Hot Rod and Popstar not performing well when the movies came out, considering how much of cult classics they're becoming now... especially when we see how much this seems to have affected them.

I've watched Popstar so many times I purchased it on dvd when they took it off of Netflix. I also loved Hot Rod when I watched it and was in tears from laughing, I need to watch it again soon. I watched Palm Springs last night and felt the same, a wonderful movie with heart and lots of laughs - these boys make media like no other

So nice to hear praise for popstar, I adore that film but in the Uk it was such a limited release - the nearest cinema showing it was 3 cities away. When the dvd came out we had a watch party with friends and had such a good time

I love these guys so much , thank you for this great interview. I was always wondering how they meet. Andy's first impressions were very funny. And I want to add real cool fact: The Chronicles of Narnia aka Lazy Sunday , aired in December 2005; that week, traffic to an upstart video-hosting site called RU-vid jumped by more than 80 percent.

This was a great interview! Felt genuine, thoughtful, interesting, well-paced, inviting and calm interview style.... so enjoyed it! I love The Lonely Island 💗 I am the same age as the guys- have enjoyed their work since SNL and now get to share their body of work with my teenage son! TBH, I showed him Shy Ronnie when he was 7 years old then was like,”crap, he’s too young...I’m a bad mom!”🤣

I love all of the albums they've produced, and love their movies. I have the Popstar soundtrack in my car and watched the movie for the fifteenth time really recently when I had something incredibly awful happen in my life and it allowed me to get out of my head for a couple of hours. Palm Springs is amazing. Hot Rod is amazing. Bash Bros is amazing. The shows they've produced are awesome. These guys have a knack for making stuff that I find hilarious. Please never stop never stopping.
