THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT (1996) Revisited: Action Movie Review

When you're doing a video series like Reel Action, you can never go too long without mentioning Shane Black. And when it comes to Christmas action movies, Shane Black is the guy to turn to. The holiday spirit brought us our video on The Last Boy Scout last year, and this time the yuletide tidings bring us another Shane Black classic, The Long Kiss Goodnight!
The Long Kiss Goodnight wasn't just another action movie. With Geena Davis as the star, playing a role traditionally designed for a man, the film was a rarity and a ballsy gamble. Davis also would've seemed like an unlikely pick for this type of assassin flick, but then she was married at the time to director Renny Harlin, the guy behind Die Hard 2, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, and Cliffhanger.
Um, he was also the director of Cutthroat Island, an infamous big-budget pirate movie known for being an epic box office flop that destroyed careers. Davis starred in that, too, and its impact on The Long Kiss Goodnight would be felt and not in a good way.
But The Long Kiss Goodnight is insanely good, with Harlin doing some of his career's best work, using the icy setting to let Davis pull off some really crazy stuff on ice skates. Tonya Harding ain’t got nothin’ on her!

I absolutely hated this movie when I saw it in theaters. Thought it was just a bad movie, thought the action was ridiculous and overly violent. But on subsequent viewings on cable in the years following it's release, I gained a much, much higher level of respect for it. The action set pieces are excellent and the comedy is hysterical at every turn, it actually upstages the action in this film. The humor has not diminished at all after 25 years. It's Still hysterically funny. And, the film has a real heart and characters that are fleshed out and developed. It has held up remarkably well over these years and is a true bonified classic in my eyes. Highly recommended.
@tjroelsma
@tjroelsma 2 года назад
I like the movie, I don't like the casting. Geena Davis feels terribly miscast, as to me she's not believable as an action hero. It all feels forced, unnatural and despite her giving it a lot of effort to look menacing as Charlie, to me she just looks like someone acting tough, not actually being tough. Samuel Jackson plays Samuel Jackson: a fast talking, much swearing and "rough around the edges" character he's been playing for decades now. It's a shame, because with different actors this movie could have been so much better.

There were a few other female protagonist action movies before "The Long Kiss Goodnight", but not many. There was "La Femme Nikita" (1991) and the American version "Point of No Return" (1993). There was "V.I. Warshawski" (1991). "Aliens" (1986).

I love this damn movie. Guess I'm watching this before I head to the theater for the Matrix Resurrections. The chemistry Sam and Geena have is pretty incredible. Edit: Just realized Brian Cox is in this, playing nearly exactly the same character he plays in Bourne several years later. Kinda cool. Shane Black's dialogue is fantastic. While Predator was atrocious, I think his dialogue is up there with Tarantino's.

Usually today, when there's another discussion about "strong women" in movies, people mention Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor first, but for me this is always my #1 choice. And it was done without any agenda behind it. What a shame Geena Davis never got another chance to kick ass in a similar movie! She and Samuel L. Jackson are just as good as any famous mismatched couple in an action flick!

Davis' Charly Baltimore is one of cinema's greatest (albeit, little known) Action heroes. Unfortunately, _Cutthroat Island_ bombed so hard in '95, Harlin & Davis were box office kryptonite a year later.
