The world record was set a year earlier by Jonathan Edwards at the 1995 Gothenburg World Championships. He broke the World record twice that day. Going into Atlanta 1996 Olympics only Kenny Harrison had a chance of beating a prime Edwards & boy did he produce much to our chagrin. ☺ I can look back at as the best triple jump competition ever much like the long jump of Barcelona 1992 Olympics

Amazingly Edwards nearly broke his world record of 18.29 in the final jump but it was a foul by nearly 0.02m... Just watch the highlights of that final and you'll see his reaction after that jump was called foul..though he took gold 4 years later at Sydney 2000...but Atlanta 1996 was really amazing...And for people who dont know Edwards also jumped 18.41(the biggest jump in the history of triple jump,but it is not considered a world record because it was wind assisted... If wind is more than 2.0, it cannot be considered a world record though it would be counted for that games but not more....That day when Edwards jumped that jump,wind was 2.4....Sad,isn't it.. )

Jonathan Edwards had a great jump rightly ruled out as a foul, but by millimetres off the board. It would have been 18.30 something and beaten the world record had it been legal. Kenny Harrison won fair and square. He was on fire that day!

I’ve attempted a few Triple Jumps back when I lived in Kamloops when the public was still allowed to use the long/triple jump pit at the Tournament Capital Centre...I only went about 9 meters but it’s still a good effort. Now I live in Campbell River and besides, the long/triple jump pit is now only being used by people who are taking lessons in the sport

Olympic record can only be achieved in an Olympics event. On the other hand World Record can be achieved in World Championship, Olympics and others. E.g. Jonathan Edwards achieved a World Record of 18.29 meters leap, in Göteborg World Championships, in 1995, but it is not considered an Olympic record because it is not held in an Olympic Event. Sometimes an WR = OR, if a world record is achieved in an Olympic games. Sometimes WR > OR, like the example above. But there are no such thing as OR > WR.

Kenny Harrison's 17.99m jump is not listed on the IAAF's list of longest jumps. There must have been a tailwind over the allowable limit.
