CaptainMeme and Ezio continue their commentary of the 2012 webDiplomacy World Cup Final (Public Press), the longest game of Diplomacy ever played. In this video, they cover the events between Spring, 1921 and Winter, 1930.
Diplomacy is a negotiation-based board game set during World War One. 7 players each control one great power (England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey) and fight for control of Europe, using their diplomatic skill to make covert deals with one another and to backstab their friends.

Just as an answer to the 1922 question of "How are Budapest and Trieste not eliminated here" - by this point I believe every other game in the tournament had wrapped up, or was near it. I believe 4-5 teams could win the whole thing at this point - some with a draw, some with specific draws excluding other players, and some with a solo. I don't believe drawing was seriously discussed. Editing as I'm going. Holland to HEL in 1925 was a misorder and meant to go to North Sea. In the fall Russia wanted me to build a fleet that would be a Russian mercenary fleet in the Med. And generally by this point the big guys gained street cred by keeping little people alive and helping them (All while growing). My game was basically to play Germany and Russia off each other and have each keep units *reasonably* near by, but not too many, and not take things without permission. Eventually, I became a Russian puppet and Italy a German one. I also won't say more about board dynamics than I did in the first paragraph, to not spoil things. But Russia was trying to constantly co-opt people.

As I was watching this it was the only reason I could see for Russia to give Austria a build, because there's nothing else an Austrian build could accomplish for Russia that Russia couldn't do themselves with another army.

Yeah, keeping minor powers around is hugely helpful for any solo attempt. Not only does it make any opposition more difficult to coordinate (especially in Public Press!), but any minor power with a grudge is a potential wild card in breaking a stalemate. All of this is particularly relevant to this game, given how important soloing was for several teams (especially Russia)! And, of course, anything short of a full elimination leaves room for a potential comeback. Especially when you've got literal decades to work with!

Allan Calhamer, inventor of Diplomacy, sadly passed away while this game was in the 1920's. I wish that he had lived long enough to know about it. It would have been an honor to get to know him!

Super long commentary on each phase and lots of jokes and humour. For me the best diplomacy channel on RU-vid. Love you guys!

I can't not read this in Biden's voice with your profile picture :D But more seriously, thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it.

@@DiploStrats haha yeah I do this thing where I have the current US president as my profile pic. I’ve recently converted my RU-vid profile to continue this admittedly strange tradition I’ve started 😂

Apologies for the difference in audio levels between myself and Ezio at the start! It gets a bit better as the episode goes on. Edit: Also, I'm not sure what that annoying humming is. I'll try to make sure it isn't a thing in the next one.

@ 2:17:14 I think the Ionian move to Greece was to make sure TYS supporting ION didn't work, then ION is free to retreat to either Tunis or TYS depending on which one is free

This makes sense! Greedy move by Austria given they could've held the RT back, but it makes sense for him to be selfish, especially given what happens afterward.
