@@lukepedersen2899 after playing the witness i found it to be extremely boring. Played through like half the game and I just could not go any further, and it seemed to be the general consensus on it. I was surprised when the looker seems to be a lot more interesting to play
Make you think did anyone really like the Witness? Like I have played it off and on for 45 hours now and understand that the puzzles are very clever, but still wont say i love the game
The Witness is one of the greatest games I have ever played, but it takes itself sooooooooooooooo seriously. The Looker is just so pitch perfect in its send up. And free on Steam?!?!?!?!?!?!! We don't deserve you, Subcreation Studio.
@@OlafLesniak It's absurd to call the Witness a bad game, it's leagues above just about any puzzle games ever made except Baba Is You. The "philosophical" commentary is absolutely pretentious and has almost nothing to do with the game itself or arrives at any interesting points, but even so that hardly detracts from the game at all, just don't play the audio tapes if you don't want to.
@@diogocabral7762 if you're assessing it as a whole, then you can't just ignore the commentary/narrative in the assessment. If the commentary/narrative ruined the whole thing for you, then you can certainly call it a bad game. End of the day it's just their opinion. Imo it's a beautiful game with some initially interesting puzzles, but it ultimately couldn't solve one of the more compelling puzzles in games, which is how to harmonize narrative & gameplay. I'd be willing to bet Baba Is You may do a better job at that, and while not quite a puzzle game, I know Outer Wilds pulls it off.
@@GmrLeon Disregarding the entirity of the actual gameplay, which is 99,9% of the game, because there are some secret audio tapes with bad philosiphical commentary, completely reasonable criticism /s Their opinion is a crap opinion. Also I don't really think The Witness failed to "harmonize narrative & gameplay", there just isn't really any narrative, and it's fine like that, _some_ of the audio tapes do try to relate to the game's themes but I'd hardly call that the narrative of the game.
@@OlafLesniak sounds like you think it's awful purely because of the commentary if so then it's ironic bringing up the stupid remark since that's a stupid way to view video games
@@pinkguy8205 See the note in game addressed to JB, "❤ with candor" from "The Management". Very deliberately placed next to the master/novice audio log in the chess area
@@benabaxter I was specifically thinking about the part at the end where he's mocking the secret in The Witness where the player character wakes up and starts seeing the line puzzles everywhere, having seen it done completely seriously in The Witness and thinking how poignant of a message it was, it's so much funnier to see the absurdity of this game about line puzzles. Especially where he calls the books "nerd shit" but with the book of line puzzles for kids he says "now that's a book", making fun of how Johnathan Blow seemingly sees The Witness as this artistic masterpiece and such a high brow work of fiction when it's mostly just line puzzles. Not hating on The Witness, I still love that game, it's just great satire is able to point out the absurdity of things you know that you never thought to think about before
This game seems like an idea you might have and say "that would be funny" and never think of it again. Im glad someone took the effort to make this into an actual game lol
that's what seperates the geniuses from the normies: putting in the effort to make a stupid idea that no one else would be crazy enough to fully develop, come true
i see what you did there , by dunk you meant real life dunkey and by the maze you're referring to real world here which is indeed a maze , very thought provoking
Play outer wilds. Is it relevant to your comment? No. But will this game be an unforgettable experience that you will love throughout your life if you finish? Yes.
The witness is one of my favorite games and yet I can fully believe they were ticked off by the eclipse puzzle or some of the boat puzzles enough to do this
@@alphabassist Indeed. To make a good parody, you have to love the base material. I believe it was something the people behind Space balls explained, that they loved Star Wars and that was the basis for a good parody
Sometime I noticed, the puzzle at 0:29 doesn't have a proper way through the maze. They literally made you think outside the box, and I think that's neat.
"The game respects the players time" was written in the bio of The witness. The creator of this really funny videogame took that mocking veeeeery personally after playing The witness.
@@cyjanek7818 every time something moved slow there was a reason for it, there was something else to notice or do while the animation is playing, as for the boxes, those are fast enough that you cant get to the top of the mountain before they fire. and the whole game was made such that you could run to any single place within a minute. It does want you to take a more meditative approach to playing, but it really doesn't force you into one. Exception being that hour long movie, but like, thats a running joke throughout his games and fully optional to do as well. I feel it respected my time much more then any AAA game with boring cutscenes and grinding for bs
@@DemonixTB I disagree personally. Don't get me wrong, I don't need my hand to be held, but a big problem with the game is also, fittingly enough given the theme of the game, getting the perspective of the devs. Now the puzzles themselves aren't the problem, but a common complaint I've seen in the game is that its difficult get the gimmick of each section of puzzles. Some are easy like the tree with the apple, but others like the bird chirps or the sonar are so hard to guess what the puzzle meant. Same with the slow bits, you know that something is there but you don't know where and if you miss it, you have to painstakingly go through the entire slow ride again. The art, theming, and even some of the puzzles are pretty good. And I don't fault those that enjoy it because there are things to enjoy. But this game has some bullshit and it purposely skips out on several Quality of Life mechanics for the sake of its "Art." And I hated that running "gag" of the developer where he wastes a real life hour of my life to do nothing but wait. It was bullshit in Braid, and its bullshit here. It does not respect my time.
The only joke that is dependent on playtime is the intro/castle courtyard and the laser. Everything else is just "line puzzle" joke. I guess audiologs but again that's a super early thing.
"They forgot to put an ending on this one." Fool, the ending is clearly found in another part of the game that you'll find 8 hours from now when you already forgot this puzz- *cough* maze existed.
As someone took the time too complete the witness to it's entirety, I actually love the comedy gold that is this game and dunky playing it. I never knew I needed this
@@schebbi you mean the classical music challenge thing underground? Yeah it was a nightmare because it reset whenever I paused the game 🤣 the hardest parts in the end was the environmental puzzles like the clouds or random walls and stuff
@@Theo-ki3lu oh for sure, I wish I could come back too it for the first time again. The whole thing was magical. Stumbling on voice notes. Finding those video codes. A true masterpiece
I have legitimately never even heard of the game that this is apparently a parody of and yet this still works as its own game even in terms of at least some of its humor. Gods, it's so nice to see a parody that isn't just lazy given how sadly rare that is.
It's so symbolic because I am the looker in the sense that I am looking at the video and you become to looker too because you are looking at my comment. Another masterpiece Dunkey.
I love The Witness, dont know what the audio and video logs were all about i mostly ignored them, Jonathan Blow has a habit of making super fun puzzel games and for some reason insists on layering a weird philosophical message on top that's totally unneeded because if you love puzzel games you'd love Braid and The Witness and you can ignore the "storyline", if you hate puzzel games the philosophical message and story line will not make you like his games they will make you hate them even more.
I definitely find his interests thought provoking, but I can see how others see it as pretentious. I'm just glad that layer is mostly hidden unless you go out of your way to find it, moreso for The Witness. Seems like the only people upset about the philosophical stuff really went out of their way to get annoyed.
Seems the creator of this game is in the comment section thanking everybody for the praise, lol. This is going to be one of dunkeys best videos, right up there with his super Mario maker videos. Best thing to ever happen to dunkey was leaving league of legend lol
@@Oldstalk It was a beautifully-crafted puzzle book with occasional audio logs of people giving vague philosophical musings. The puzzles are very well-made and it felt immensely satisfying to complete them, but calling it “One of the most brilliant games ever” feels like a stretch to me.
We all know most of us would just be annoyed playing this game but dunkeys versions of these short joke based games are always so perfect its like the games were created to be played by him so i can watch him while playing
Shit I feel this way about literally every game in existence pretty much... I mean, I have NEVER experienced unbridled joy while playing ANYTHING the way Dunkey does when playing a new 3D Mario Game, or finding ridiculous glitches. Real talk? I can physically feel the joy he experiences in those moments through the screen, and that literally staves off my constant overwhelming depression! Not a joke, I mean that. Dunked is a gem and is probably the only person alive that could convince me to join a cult...
2:38 Extremely accurate representation of feedback in the creative industry. Art directors not knowing what they want and give you misleading feedback to make you do iteration after iteration until you get ptsd from watching a dunkey video
hey dunkarino, been going through a hard time. heart failure, motorcycle accident, breakup, just a huge poopoo doodoo time. Thanks for making me laugh all the time dood. you're doing great
I finally played this after first learning about it from this video. I'm still really impressed by a solo dev who has such a strong love/hate relationship with this game to make a free game like this from scratch lol.
I remember when I played through the Witness over several days in uni. Extremely satisfying and frustrating. I loved the experience, but I don't think I would want to play anything like it. Except Talos Principle cuz that was also insane.
