Join us on a sunny and cold winter day as we check out the Loon Lake Copper Mine in NE Washington.
You can find a lot of different minerals at this location, such as atacamite, azurite, baryte, bornite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, cuprite, hematite, malachite, pyrite, quartz, and tetrahedrite.
It is quite difficult in my experience to accurately identify which is copper ore and which is malachite coming from this exact mine location. In some of the others in the area, it is obvious which is which, but not here.
Any way you spin it, they are both pretty green rocks.

Like you said, bring a gravel rake and then hit it with a bucket or three of water to get the azurite and malachite to display. Thanks for taking us along!

I live really close to there, in fact that creek Grouse Creek flows through my property. Shot a nice heavy 3x4 buck a couple hundred yards up stream from the talings piles. Unfortunately the place changed owners last year and got logged and no trespassing signs everywhere.

"If it's garbage, we take it." I carry at least 5 of those reusable bags in my back pack. My kids ask for them when we find trash, anywhere we go. Sometimes it's not what we do, but the impression we leave on the next generation. Rock on!

Generally speaking from a gem quality concerns, the lighter in color generally means less quality or less stable. The dark nuggets should be heavier, and could be cut and shaped. But beautiful in a jar nonetheless. I'm jealous

Very vibrant minerals, I like the mixed malachite and azarite. Are they heavy? They look almost porous. Thanks for taking us with you, I for sure would have fallen in a 3rd of the way across the river lol, great video 👍🏼🌟
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 4 года назад
They are not very heavy and they are somewhat weathered and porous. I have a feeling that late in the summer the creek will be almost dry.

Ever find chrysocolla there? I'm not sure about the differences in how they all form, but my hunch is you might find some there. Lol! I had to laugh at the river-crossing! I understand you're out there for fun, and wet feet from cold water is no fun, but I couldn't tell you how many times I've ended up up to my waist in mucky swamp water or a chilly river to cut kilometers off prospecting traverses! Get to the LZ or spend the night! LOL!
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 4 года назад
I guess you can find chrysocolla there but I haven't, mostly due to only knowing about the spot since winter and the ground is still frozen and partly covered in snow. I agree man being wet and cold is no fun.

This time of year it would be really hard, lots snow and mud but in the summer the road is rather flat and dry.
