Is it just me, or do all bad movies have at least one side character whose story would be far more interesting than the actual protagonist's?

You mean the Onceler? He IS the main character in the book. EDIT: Actually, I saw the part talking about Audrey just now. I heard a theory that she was a tree nymph of the last tree who needed humans to care about trees to be a human herself. Wouldn't that be more interesting?

Making Audrey the main protagonist instead of Ted actually sounds like a good idea. Maybe she found some old photographs or archives from her relatives who were around before Thneedville existed, and she became interested in studying more on organic life. She hears about the Onceler and sneaks out of town to go see him, wanting to know if there is anywhere to find more trees. At first, Audrey mostly just cares about seeing and feeling one for herself, but quickly realizes the severity of a lack of nature and wants to help bring it back. On the other side, the Onceler is shocked to find that someone actually still cares about the trees and confides in Audrey to plant the last seed, as he is too old to leave his house, and too ashamed to face the damage he had caused. Sure, switching over to a female protagonist would be a relatively large change; but it would also work in context to a progressive era that has pushed for more depictions of gender equality and three-dimensional female leads in media.

The one thing I never got behind, was at the end when Ted tells the townspeople, "I speak for the trees." I remember watching that and going, "...I do not believe a word you just said." All Ted has been doing is listening to a story to get a seed to 'get to' a girl. If he had maybe used his spare time to look into the public library, only to find propaganda texts telling how bad trees were, or finding out how maybe the elderly had been executed for even mentioning real trees (given how Grammy seems to be the only person who still remembers what trees were actually like!), it might have made Ted seem a little more 'real' in believing what he was saying. As it is, the 'good will' of the film seems as fake as the fakeness of the town. Plus, the logic of the town just drives me nuts. It looks like the kids of the old times would have become the adults we see now, and none of them recall living in a world of Truffula trees? Did they all just submit to a lobotomy before being allowed to live in Thneedville? For that matter, their economics system also has me quizzical.

I honestly feel like we were moving(albeit maybe a little more slowly) towards better female leads in media before the recent push for them, but in any case, that idea sounds a lot better than having Ted be the lead the way he is.

Honestly, the entire original demo sounds like it’s selling-not a great movie-but a much better one than we got. The fact they cut Biggering from the movie in itself is criminal, but I enjoy most of the fan animatics far more than what Illumination would’ve probably come up with around it anyway.

It also makes no sense how the town even operates. If the town is happy and healthy the way they live why would they even care about trees at the end. How does O’hare make air. Does he use trees? That could have been an interesting plot twist but instead this movie decided to be b-rated crap.

@KeybladeMasterAndy
@KeybladeMasterAndy 6 лет назад
Dem H78 The length isn't the main problems with these adaptations. It's the attempts at modernizing what are timeless stories. Think of The Peanuts Movie. That is a story simple enough to not need to be feature-length but, with the Schulz family involved, the source material was respected well enough for padding to be an absolute non-issue for most people who see it. It FEELS like a feature-length Peanuts movie.

They should've made the Onceler a well-intentioned person who just wanted to help poorer areas by creating jobs but starts down a slippery slope of becoming short-sighted towards the suffering of the environment and convincing himself that what he's doing is helping other people until the time it's too late. For Ted, meanwhile, I think he should've taken Audrey's place and interested in the world outside after hearing about it from his grandmother.

@wannabehistorian371

...Okay, now I want someone to make this movie. Heck, maybe I should write a fanfic for this. Don’t know if anyone would read this, but here it goes. Thneedville would be shown at the start, but it’s a clearly depressing place; the air is foggy, and everyone has to wear oxygen masks manufactured by and running on O’Haire air when going outside at all times, at home breathing in air supplied by air-purifying air-conditioning or pumping in air also manufactured by O’Haire. That, or O’Haire doesn’t exist in this story. Ted is still the main character, but hears about trees from his grandmother. Maybe she’s wistfully looking at the plastic trees as she walks by them, or brings it up at the dinner table after the mom talks about the new plastic trees, leading to the Disco gag, but the grandma isn’t amused. Maybe she’s the one painting the murals. Or maybe she collapses trying to go without an oxygen mask and they bring her to the hospital, and it’s heavily implied this has happened before, and in the patient room she tells Ted about trees. She then points him to the Once-Ler. The Once-Ler could be a guy who was already rich, like idle rich. Then one day he spots squatters on his grounds, comes across some beggars, or is taking a walk through the slums for whatever reason and gets pickpocketed, and he yells at the offenders. They get into an argument, leading to the Once-Ler shouting “Why don’t you just get a job?!”, and the person he’s arguing with says “Get a job?! Who do you think would want to employ me?!”, taking off their false leg, “I haven’t even completed high school! You think I haven’t tried?!”. There should probably be a scene where he witnesses the horrible conditions the poor live in himself. This leads him to have a revelation to do something with his life, and he leaves his rich life behind to start his company. That, or he grew up in the slums himself, and started the company to get his friends and family out of the situation, finding that some handmade thneeds he made from some Truffla fluff were popular with the rich. He’d call the mechanics from the slum and they’d make a factory that at first is rickety and unstable but eventually becomes an industrial machine. He’d probably be shown as a good boss to his workers. At first they would have handpicked the trees, or tried shearing them off, but the amount of trees needed to make one thneed isn’t worth the labor of plucking them, so they start cutting them. The amount of workers grows and grows as the company gets bigger and more poor people rush to the factory, and Thneedville is built as a town to house them; high-quality housing as they have never known before. Maybe Ted’s grandma is among the workers here, and is among the first to notice that this business model isn’t sustainable but stays quiet because this is her revenue now and has a great house thanks to it. The Lorax would try to stop the Once-Ler, of course, but the audience would be very conflicted because they’ve seen the horrible, poverty-stricken conditions these workers and maybe the Once-Ler grew up in. But ultimately, the workers once again become unemployed, the animals have no place to live either, the ecosystem is ruined, and the Lorax gives a Reason You Suck Speech to the Once-Ler. Thneedville degenerates into a polluted, once again poverty-stricken town as the Once-Ler goes into hiding out of shame, or the threat is looming. Then, O’Haire swoops in to fill the employment and clean air void, giving him a vice-grip on the town’s economy as well as the air supply. Other employment options spring up initially financed by O’Haire so that O’Haire can get profits instead of the economy being cyclical. No one can speak up against him or he raises the price of air, so everyone continues to stay quiet until the grandma tells Ted. That, or the Once-Ler gives all his CEO profits to his workers since he has no use for it anymore, and with that and their pre-existing money the town is polluted but economically stable. There could be no climax, like the book; the Once-Ler could give the seed to Ted, and he goes home with a mission. That, or if they have to give it a climax, it would be kind of similar to the movie, if O’Haire is still in the story. But I really think he shouldn’t be, since it would brush off the message by sweeping the question of what happens to the people O’Haire employed under the rug. They could also give a conclusion without a climax by the town finding out about the lie they’ve been living, and the grandma and Ted plant the last seed. Cut to a feel-good shot of trees growing around Thneedville yet again or the tree growing at the center of the town, and/or the Lorax smiling, maybe he turns to the Once-Ler or his house and tells him “You did good.”. Roll credits. Yeah, I should definitely write this sometime. Maybe that’s a bit dense for a kids’ movie, but hey, anything’s better than what we got.

It kinda surprises me how little this plothole ever comes up: why didn’t he just harvest the tufts of the trees, since (assuming) they’d eventually grow back; he does this at first, but why couldn’t he automate the process to speed up production? Or, assuming you’d NEED to chop the entire tree down, shouldn’t he be planting more to make sure his supply doesn’t completely run out and thus force him into bankruptcy? Actually, because of how long it would take to grow a fully mature Truffula Tree, that’d just mean that Thneeds would become exceptional scarce and exponentially more valuable; that’s basic supply & demand (the lower the supply, the higher the demand).

I believe it's that they're taking instant gratification over sustainable living, which is also the case for using fossil fuels ect. It would make sense for humans (that is, the fat cats in the government) to spend our time building solar panels and wind turbines, but we just keep using fossil fuels because it's easier
@KlutzyNinjaKitty
@KlutzyNinjaKitty 5 лет назад
Exactly. It reminds me of that one campaign PETA did where they had a fake, butchered looking lamb with 'here's the rest of your wool coat' or whatever on the poster... Except that if shepherds mauled their livestock everytime they sheared the sheep, they'd spend more money on medications or through breeding/buying more sheep only to kill them after one shearing. It costs less to take care of your resource than to treat it like garbage. Things like sheep and trees are somewhat different than fossil fuels in that the outcomes of burning fuel weren't apparent until much later. If I cut down trees for lumber, I'm not going to look out at my lumber yard and OK the cutting of the last one since removing my resource is the worst possible thing for my lumber business. I find the majority of pro-environment media gets the delivery wrong. If you want people to actually care, you have to show them what'll affect them directly. Like most animals, people are selfish and only think about the now. Blue-collar John Doe doesn't care about animals losing their homes, he cares about going into work at his factory, working his hours, and coming home with food for his wife and kids. If you want John Doe to care, you need to make the message basically grab him by the ear and shout "Hey, asshole! If we don't stop, your kids are going to die from (insert outcome here)!" Once you get John Doe and his coworkers to care and start having sit-down strikes, then the bigwigs will care because they're not making money anymore. Right now, experimental green energy sources and practices aren't lucrative, which is bad for business. I could probably keep going all day; but, I think my point's been made.

@Swiftbow
@Swiftbow 5 лет назад
@@carysbebard3690 That's the old thought, but it's steadily being proven more and more inaccurate. First off, there is increasing evidence that the Earth produces fossil fuels continuously. This is evidenced by having MORE known resources every year than the year before. Secondly, wind turbines and solar panels are good supplementally, but the technology is (currently) incapable of supplying the power needs of our civilization. The areas that produce the most solar and wind are also difficult to transport the power out of. Additionally, since batteries are still incapable of effectively storing power during peak production, nighttime and calm conditions remain the bane of these technologies. It's good to have SOME solar and wind production in a grid to add to the supply during peak demand. (Especially residential roof solar, which spreads the grid out instead of centralizing it.) But slowdowns at night force fossil fuel sources to pick up the slack. To show an example, Germany recently was able to meet their power demands completely with solar. HOWEVER... this was only during the day, and only during the summer. At night, they had to fire up the fossil fuel plants. (They burn additional fuel going from off to on, so this is a waste.) They have to turn the coal plants off during the day, though, because the solar production was SO high, it overloaded the grid and they had to shunt power to elsewhere in Europe. This isn't a problem if the grid is multi-sourced. Consider this situation: Protracted winter cloudiness in a country that has replaced their entire grid with solar/wind. People end up either freezing, or (ironically) chopping down forests to stay alive. This is a long-winded way of saying: ALL these technologies are good, including fossil fuels. We should let the tech and the market dictate where we go long-term and not force a situation that could end up being worse. We have time, the myth is that we don't. (Oh, and to reply to the original poster, the Onceler is a moron. Modern lumber companies actually plant two trees for every one they chop down. The result, in North America and Europe, is MORE forest cover that we had during the 1700s.)

Now is my time to gush about how much I love The Lorax cartoon special from 1972. It's still so relevant today in our modern political climate, on top of managing to be an emotionally stirring musical. It's amazing (or just sad) how a movie telling the same story from 2012 manages to feel more dated and less relevant despite so much potential to make the message...mean something beyond "trees are pretty and cardboard-cutout Captain Planet villains are bad, I guess". It's also really telling how the 1972 film builds its emotional crux around the Oncler's downfall and how not-black-and-white the Oncler's way of thinking is (i.e. him bringing up directly to The Lorax how he's supporting the economy and creating jobs and communities despite acknowledging the damage he has caused, highlighting the political sides of conflict) while the 2012 film confines that storyline to a single musical number with basic, taunting lyrics.

1. You made a point I've been griping about for years: they changed so much about this wonderful story... why didn't they excise Ted and make AUDREY the protagonist?! They changed everything else! What, were they afraid of ruining the integrity of Seuss's book?! Guys, you've been there, done that, got the promotional Thneed! 2. Lindsay Ellis also pointed out the biggest, gaping plot hole in this movie: Where in the ever-loving hell is O'Hare getting his oxygen?! And is this the only place in the world?! Why don't they know about trees? Were Truffula trees the only trees? Who are these people? Where did they come from? And if this is the only place in the world, where are the Once-ler's family? I know world-building is tricky and rarely perfect, but a house of wet, torn up cards is sturdier than this! 3. I will always hate that we can see the Once-ler. The darkly enigmatic character who was so haunting in the book... is now every Illumination or lesser DreamWorks character. And remember how rightfully melancholy and guilt-ridden he was in the book and the old animated special because he ruined everything? Well, now he's wacky and eccentric and crap! Because who wants yucky old EMOTIONS in a kids' movie?! Who wants to teach kids that negative actions can have adverse consequences on their lives? 4. By trying to make the Lorax more "likable, relatable, and accessible"... he's now even less likable, relatable, and accessible. Good one, screenwriters.

They could have done giving The Onceler a face correctly, by showing that he's a human too, and anyone can be consumed by greed, but they did it wrong because they tried *too* hard to make him likeable. They made him just a quirky entrepreneur who didn't notice the devastation he caused. And to think, if the corporation behind the studio didn't feel so attacked, not turning Biggering into How Bad Can I Be would have saved his entire character by showing that he knew *exactly* what he was doing, he even had it screamed in his face, but he simply ignored it for money.

Besides, he could make a side business selling all the stuff you need to keep trees alive (fertilizer, comically oversized flowerpots, watering cans, etc). There's plenty of money to be made from a properly-constructed tree racket. (Also, selling fresh air is a kinda...weird business model when you don't live in a space station or wear space suits or something. I get casting pop stars in musicals - If you've got a musical, you want people who can sing, and pop stars can sing. But... Why cast a pop star and never let them do a solo number? I mean, ideally you want someone who can do both, but for some reason 'casting broadway stars' never seems to be done and 'people who have been known for both acting and singing in their careers' for some reason never seems to occur to anyone (...Kylie Monogue, Billie Piper... Heck, both James Marsters and Gareth-David Lloyd have some sort of music sides to their careers. Or if you want to torture me both David Hasslehoff and Jason Donovan have notable careers in both music and acting.)

I think possibly the most upsetting part of this is that they _were_ going in the right direction, then turned that ship around. Look up "Biggering", the Onceler's planned corruption song before "How Bad Can I Be", it hits all the marks. The Onceler creates his own demising, half-recognizing the damage he's doing but refusing to acknowledge it. The Lorax is a surprisingly ominous and intelligent source of foresight, calling the Onceler out on not just his actions but the destructive mentality behind them in a way far more dramatic than the annoying houseguest gag we get in the movie. The Onceler is a character, and a tragic one. and, well, the song is better imho It may just be me and my angst-craving heart, but I find it genuinely sad that they passed up that dramatic storytelling path to make the memefest we got :/

Believe it or not, I actually found a FANFICTION that made this premise better. The basics were still the same, except The Once-ler was known around town as a boogie-man like monster (because he actually kinda looks like one), O'Hare actually USES his power and manipulation to try and get in Ted's way, the Once-ler CALLS TED OUT on the fact that he's just doing this for a girl and refuses to tell him more until Ted realizes he has to actually care about trees for HIMSELF, the Once-ler is still goaded down the evil path (it pins the whole thing more on his Mom than him) but he still holds himself responsible for it since he let himself be manipulated so easily for so long that the land was beyond repair. It's called The Tree With a Tongue and it honestly felt more like a movie than this did (despite the songs in the movie being a guilty pleasure of mine)

Lindsay Stern Personally, I think Ted is no better than O'Hare. Yes, O'Hare is against trees because they're a "threat" to his business. But, Ted's goal is for selfish reasons too. He only sees the trees as a means of getting into Audrey's pants. I'd say that if they either made Audrey the protagonist, or just cut her from the movie altogether, I would have enjoyed it a little bit more.

As catchy as “How bad can I be” is, it came at the expense of a much better song called “biggering”. In addition to being a solid rock opera on par with a lot of classic Disney villain songs, it does a much better job at framing the Onceler’s greed as his own fault. ( That and the fault of the growing demand from people he was willing to sell to). Apparently the folks at illumination cut it out because they were free children would find it too dark. Even though as mentioned earlier, a lot of kids favorite songs and Disney hills are the villain ones.

To answer your question as to why he brings his family into it despite their behavior towards him, I have an answer. Abuse makes us feel like we need our abusers. We feel like we need to try harder, to appease them, to include them in the hope that they'll see our value and change. Seeing that he's found success, the Onceler includes them so they can witness and have a piece of it. It's really sad because no matter what he does, it will never be enough...as we see when the last one falls. The story doesn't center on that (because the real story should be so much more than what they did focus on) but there is another story lurking in there. And I do adore the irony of merchandising in this. I remember it being eeeeeverywhere. IHOP, the cars, toys...they completely missed their own message.

To this day I am disappointed my assumption watching the trailers wasn't actually in the movie: Ted and Onceler looked alike to me, so I thought Ted was his descendant and he was learning his family's horrible legacy. I... guess the "crush on someone's who's too old for you" theme is potentially a relatable element of early adolescence ripe for poking fun at, and that's what they were going for there? But unless you really go full Stacy's Mom highlighting the absurdity and/or actually have some growth and development happening (didn't Bart Simpson go through some of this?), you're basically playing this as a regular old "here's the couple of this movie!" just with a little sprinkling of "LOL he's a kid with a crush" gags thrown in. (Writers, there's a difference between wanting to do something nice for someone to "get" them, and deciding you want to do something that will make someone you like happy. No, it's not too sappy to take seriously.)

I think that How Bad Can I Be and Biggering could have been both used in the movie. The former is played shortly after we meet the Lorax as the Once-ler’s Justification for what he is doing when he is confronted for the first time and thinks he’s doing no harm. And then Biggering plays as the start of the second act where the Once-ler is slowly being corrupted by corporal greed and actively ignores the harm he’s causing to the environment and the Lorax pleads with him one last time for him to find another way to make Thneeds without causing harm and destruction and this time the Once-Lee ignores him because his greed has overtaken his sense of morality with the nagging mom telling him how proud of him she is while wearing an expensive looking full fur coat and expensive jewelry with valuable gems such as diamonds and emeralds and shows that she is to blame for the Once-ler not caring about the animals or environment as he has finally gotten the approval that he craved for so long from his extremely toxic mother. It would provide character growth and a more identifiable reason why a guy who originally was so nice and caring suddenly became a heartless and greedy man. The mom could even be used as a metaphor about how a parent can poison their own children’s minds through their words and actions and cause a drastic change to happen from within.

They botched the execution (mostly with the cop-out happy ending), but I think I get what they were going for with this version of the Onceler. You're right that the Onceler in the original story is wonderfully creepy, but in a way he's almost...too creepy. He looks even less human than you're average Seuss character, and when you combine that with never seeing his face, he becomes a boogieman. It's easy for audiences to distance themselves from him and the evil that he does because they don't see themselves in this spooky, shadowed figure. The movie version, on the other hand, is so incredibly likable and charming that (in theory) it comes as all the more of a gut-punch when we see the depth to which he will sink. It reminds us (or at least it should; see botched execution) that even the people we love and care about most are capable of this level of destruction. And if they are, perhaps we are too. Or at least that's what it would have been like without the tacked-on happy ending.
@elsie8757
@elsie8757 6 лет назад
I don't think it's the happy ending's fault so much as the movie going out of its way to show us that "Look, everything went bad because the poor Onceler's obnoxious, uncaring family kept pushing him! Not because of anything _he_ did, not at all! He just wanted so badly to earn their approval!" Which isn't a bad character arc in itself, but it totally flies in the face of the point this particular story is trying to make.

Personally, I think that the 'distance' between the audience and the Once-ler is really effective at showing just how ugly human nature can be without making the story too on the nose and preachy. Thing is, people are generally very, very resistant to seeing ugliness in themselves or people they like. They'll ignore it for as long as they can and when they can't ignore it anymore, they'll find excuses for it. The Lorax manages to sidestep this nicely by presenting the Once-ler as this creepy, almost inhuman figure; he's different and distant enough that you can just accept his greed at face value, you don't try to make excuses for him (or yourself, you know- "I'm not like that") but just familiar enough to recognise... Less a gut-punch and more a cold, nasty feeling at the back of your brain. Or at least that's how I felt the first time I saw the original animation. I do totally agree with you though, the new version would have been much better without the tacked-on happy ending. The original ambiguous ending would have made a really nice contrast to how bright and lively the rest of the film is.

Not to mention the pop music which will horribly date this movie. The irony is that Illumination is probably one of the worst studios to have as the adapter of Seuss' works. They shamelessly market and shill out any of their products that gets a modicum of attention so they can squeeze every last bit of money out of it, usually to the detriment of the original work. At least Disney (mostly) knows how to hide their corporatism and knows when to reel back on the saturation of popular characters.

As much as I too love How Bad Can I Be, it's also the movie's greatest flaw. In the original animated short, most of the movie focuses on the Once-ler's gradual rise to power, giving him more reason for his actions. But in the movie, they go from full forest to no more trees in about 5 minutes. It doesn't make you feel any of the weight of the Once-ler's actions, nor sympathize with any of the characters for the consequences. Had the movie spent most of the run time focusing on the rise of the Thneed Empire instead of pointless slapstick and pandering to make it more "kiddy", it would have been a much better film.

This movie hurts me. The Lorax is easily my favorite of all Dr. Seuss' work. I read the book multiple times as a child, I absolutely love the TV special that captured the spirit of the book perfectly, and not once in my life have I ever thought to myself "ya know what this timeless piece of my childhood needs? Modernization, a forced idiot villain, and pop songs". I actually agree that this could have been more interesting if Ted had been dropped all together and Audrey was the main character. Her fascination with trees gives her a perfectly valid excuse to set out to learn what happened to them without some stupid try-hard romance, it could have given her a worthwhile connection with the Onceler, and it would have helped to maintain the "unless" theme at the end of the story. Also, just cut out that entire final bit with the chase and terrible song. Let the damn movie end with the air of ambiguity it was meant to end on! Leave it to the audience to think about the themes and messages of the movie without trying to hammer it in! Even if you don't want that air ambiguity at the end, it would still work better for her to have the seed because the kids can rest assured that she'll plant it, giving the studio it's happy ending without the pointless bullshit and it would keep them from butchering my childhood! Stop butchering my childhood fuckers! There's not much left that hasn't been reduced to a bloody stump!!

I’m with you having Audrey as lead would have been interesting. You could still have the grandma as the person who tells her where to find oncer but also have her be the one to tell her about trees in first place as well. Or another idea that makes ted more noble is have him and Audrey be siblings and him doing it for the more noble reason of making her happy (like maybe have the painting over audrey’s mural being the catalyst of why he goes to the oncer and have him saying “I will be honest it’s my sister who still cares but I want her to be happy,”.).

17:45 - You just made a solid point there?! Why wasn't Audrey the one who went to the once-ler? I know the book had an illustration of a boy go see the once-ler but it could have been anyone of any gender! Plus audrey cares about the trees so she deserves the spotlight!
@thomashuffman3237

The Who Editor Yeah, she'd be a more likable protagonist, since she has genuine concern over the environment, unlike Ted, who only views trees as a means of getting into Audrey's pants.

to be honest, O'Hare wasn't really a bad guy more so an entrepreneur. think about it. all of the trees are dead, no clean air is available, and the land is full of trash and chemicals. in reality, as far as O'Hare knew, the trees and natural air were all gone. so this actually makes him kind of a lifesaver. and I'm pretty sure the economy is forever screwed up with the purchasable air now gone.
@carysbebard3690
@carysbebard3690 5 лет назад
Being an entrepreneur and selling people things they need doesn't preclude someone from being a villain lol. Because he wants to make money more than he wants to help the world, he deliberately tries to stop people getting the thing in a more effective way through trees, instead keeping them slaves to his monopoly. The film doesn't show it particularly well but imagine having to pay someone to breathe, that's pretty messed up.

I think the whole " doing it for the girl " could have worked if ted (I think that's his name?) learned to care for the trees as the movie progressed. So his interest starts only because of the girl but laters evolves, maybe after learning the once lot's backstory. There could even have been a scene where the girl gives up because idk she thinks it's to hard or impossible and he convinces her to keep trying showing he isn't doing all of this just to get with her anymore

My school's chorus, band, show choir, and jazz band came down to Universal in Orlando and preformed there, and each group did a work shop. Chorus and show choir did the choir workshop, and the band and jazz band did the band workshop (unless you were in both band and chorus and you had to choose which one you would rather do) the band's workshop dubbed over the scene in Despicable Me when Margo Edith and Agnes get into Gru's secret lair, and the chorus(which I am a part of) we did the stealing of the bed scene from this particular film. It was fun to dub over. Especially when we made the sound of the onceler turning the light off a meow.

You know, if they had just established Ted and Audrey as good friends (cause you know, guys and girls can just be friends. I know, huge shocker) and he wants to do the tree task for her purely out of the goodness of his heart cause he's her friend and all, Ted's character would be 10X more likable. Simple fix really. Now I know you're probably thinking. If they're such good friends, how come he doesn't know about her tree fascination until now. Well that's simple too. Its a new fascination. It would take some tactful exposition, but she had recently found a book on them and now wonders what they look like in real life dreaming she could see one. Once again, problem fixed.

Usually when some movie gets announced and people are saying it looks bad, even if I agree I have the policy of 'let's let it come out first, then pass judgement.' It might not end up as bad as it looks. *Not this movie.* I saw the poster with the big orange face and said 'NOPE! No way modern Hollywood won't completely miss the mark on this one.' In the end we got pretty much exactly what I expected.

I did not hated the ending, but I didn't loved it, too. In my version, Thneedville was a small happy city like in the movie, bit after the Air Bottle's creator died, is a unhappy and noisy, city because they cant breath well,and there's no enough bottle for all. Audrey found some Truffulas photos and ask Ted, who has heard about trees since he was born, and they go to the Onceler to find more, but the hustory conviced them to care even more. In this history, well, Onceler lives with his poor family and he decides to go to another city and sell his Thneed one night. He ende up in Greenville, a city with no tress except one forest right Next to them. He cut 3 trees igniring the Lorax. The Lorax saved hus life and tried to be his friend, especially after he's annoyed in Greenville, but Onceler doesn't want anything bit being succeful. After he finally got acknowledgement, he tried to just cut the tufts of the trees, bit IT's too slow, so he decided (by himself) cut more trees, with no rest. After a year, during the "1,000 Thneeds" party (and a scene based on the original, when he's fighthing to speak for the trees) Lorax visited him and tells him some Barbaloots has gone, and there's just Lou and Pipswick in the forest. Onceler talks with himself and asked if he is doing good. He decided ti continué 'cause he is making the people happy and "progress is progress and progress must continue". After the Thneeds becomes more succeful, he becomes more ambitious and the dong "Biggering" plays on. After a year, some of the animals are gone, but there's some of the them who stays. The Lorax tries yo find ant seed, but he failed, and talks with Onceler one more time, explaining him why he is doing wrong and needs yo stop, and also explains that he was biggering too fast. Onceler tells him that he can't fired a lot of people and he has his little speech to the Lorax. Then, the last tree falls. The Lorax and the rest of the animals go. The Onceler gives the kids the last seed, after they asked him if they could help, making Onceler know that they do care, and they comeback to their homes. They planted it with Norma, Sarah (Ted's mother), and Fletcher (Audrey' father). The movie ends with the seed being planted, a take to the Onceler talking with the Sky ("Lorax, that seed I found is in good hands") and the voice of the Lorax ("I know") It sucks but is something. Sorry my shitty english.

I kinda like what they do with this onceler- for me it's supposed to show that even a generally good person with decent morals can easily end up doing something very bad when motivated by greed and refusing to look critically at the people around them. I think the audience is supposed to relate to him and look at themselves.

The biggest crime in "kids" shows and movies today is that they don't challenge the viewers anymore. I say "kids" in air quotes because according to Disney. If you write material aimed JUST at kids, you're hurting yourself as an artist. "Because what are adults but kids all grown up anyway"

If the Once-ler could make a machine that could pull off the truffula trees tuffs, then why in the unholy hell, didn't he just cut the tuffs into squares and not take the entire tree? Yes it would be limited, but I'm pretty sure he could artificially create truffula trees or something.

What was the point of the Humming-fish and the Swanee Swans in this movie? In the book and special they represent the air and water that became unsustainable for life, but here they are treated like Bar-ba-loots and they're all sent at once, it's like Ted and Aubrey's names just here for eye-candy, but with no thought added to it.
