@@silburne shoi definitely has way more variance, i always felt Kitamura was making the same track over and over again. Like this, Dancing Lion and Mother of Fingers are all by Shoi and they all sound completely different. Way ahead of her.

Even if Midra is a "failed" lord of Frenzied Flame, his theme still absolutely sells the "you have to kill this guy before he leaves the room and ends the world" vibe of this fight. It already begins during the battle with the walls and drapes burning!

Definitely, as the fight progresses he only gets more powerful. The frenzy attacks become more prominent, frenzied fire engulfs the arena. Guy was seconds away from burning the entire dlc to the ground.

@@VForte112 not sure. The weapon piercing him is one made by the local peoples inquisition. So they most likely did this to him. Nanaya as you probably already know is dead in the manse cradling a frenzied flame torch. I'm not sure if the "sword" piercing him is actually suppressing the flame of frenzy (like a certain needle) or if he is holding it in via pure force of will until we show up. I'll look if I can find any more about him in any other item descriptions.

Pure madness is more this ost represents since its way more distorted and chaotic than any other things in elden ring. While other evils like mohg's theme is way more structured, you can almost hear how cunning and scheming he is.

Very long-standing trope with demons and chaos. Take warlocks from D&D which is often the base inspiration for this entire sub genre in fantasy: they are a charisma class. Evil and chaos are charming

Having that *huge* bass in just *this* song really makes it feel otherworldly, like they saved it for THE fight with a being that's on the verge of breaking reality. Something that *does not belong* in this world, a purely artificial sound in an orchestral soundtrack. Considering the obvious King In Yellow influence, I think it's the perfect fit.

The powerful bass in the Phase 2 section actually sounds like a tuba "splatting" or "overblowing", where you force so much air through that the instrument overvibrates and produces a distorted, blaring tone. This is almost always discouraged in normal playing but in this case it's terrifying and perfect for the composition

Straight up the best boss in the game. When I came across the Abyssal Woods a wave of dread and excitement washed over when I saw everything desolate and burned with the only remaining wildlife being tainted with the Frenzied Flame. The descriptions on the items we find along the way to the manse telling of a man who failed to become the lord. It was only when we find him that he completes his destiny in becoming the Lord of Frenzied Flame. I remember seeing the Frenzied Flame ending and thinking that would've made a rad boss fight. Lo and behold Fromsoft were thinking the same thing.

I interpret it a little different, you assume failing to become the Lord of Frenzy was unintentional. From reading Nanaya's item descriptions it seems like Midra was on the path of becoming lord of flaming frenzy but had a change of heart mid way. The sword on his head and Nanaya's last words, "Endure" tells the story that he was suffering on purpose to stop himself from becoming the Lord. Just my take

@@YogiYarnham1709 Maybe! I think its more like Midra was definitely on the path to becoming the lord but was then put a stop by the Hornsent. The item description for the Greatsword of Damnation reads: "Golden greatsword that once pierced the body of Midra, master of the manse. Used by the hornsent in the execution of a damnation like no other." So I think the Hornsent caught wind of Midra going down the path of the Frenzied Flame and went to "execute" him, basically sealing the frenzied flame inside of Midra. Nanaya, who I am assuming was his fingermaiden or something, might have also been against the coming of the lord, so she told Midra to endure, to which he did until we showed up and he decided that he had endured enough. So I think his suffering was forced upon him by the hornsent, but Midra continued to endure the pain at the words of Nanaya rather than a selfless act for the world.

The fact that torrents whistle said he wouldn't come out because he was too scared made it 10 times more scare knowing I was gonna have to out run whatever was in this place on foot. Took me back to my darksouls days.

The whole area is a visual story and build leading up to this guy. There are almost no enemies, there is almost no life. The trees have withered and twisted, almost looking like faces of damned souls sometimes. The very water is stained black with corruption, orange veins carved through it. The very rock of the cliffs around this place radiate a maddening orange glow. And it all gets more and more intensely orange the closer you get. The only living things around are the animals that have succumbed, the hornsent tasked with guarding this place (some of which have also succumbed), and those.. terrors that cannot be touched, seemingly hornsent that are so far gone that they became something else entirely. And this is what happened to this place while Midra was SEALED! Getting to that manor, with the bodies lined in front.. a sense of dread washed over me. And then getting to him, seeing paintings of what he and this place was once like, seeing how it is all scorched by his mere presence now.. there is a sincere sense of tragedy at play. And then the cutscene in his fight. It clicked for me in the same moment it clicked for you. And the fact that he twists that which sealed him into the weapon he uses against you.. chills. 10/10, coolest moveset I have seen so far, and as someone else said in these comments, on an audiovisual level this guy is peak. And the HORROR aspect of it all. He might be my new favorite.

Another thing I noticed that I haven't seen people mention is that if you try to call on Torrent while in this area, you'll get a message that says he's too afraid to be summoned here. Given that the Frenzied Flame can burn spirits, Torrent being a Spectral Steed and his summoning ring being literally turned to ash in the Frenzied Flame ending, it adds even more to the feeling of this place with everything you've mentioned. Absolutely terror inducing and I love how they've portrayed it.

I was too awestruck by the environment so it just skipped my mind to even try Torrent. As a huge fan of horror, and especially cosmic/eldritch horror, this place was a feast for me. Clear inspiration from Hastur, The King in Yellow (on overall feel and color scheme, there is a lot of originality here).

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. Messmer's crusade caused so much suffering that the Flame of Frenzy started to manifest. You can see a painting in the Manse back when it was a lush forest full of flowers

@@seafoam6119 The Frenzied Flame doesn't work like that, it isn't conscious. Frenzied Flame is just an advanced form of Nihilism that leans toward omnicide. It's a philosophy, not a living thing. The Flame of Frenzy doesn't choose to manifest on its own, people choose to manifest the Flame of Frenzy themselves when they go through too much suffering. Just like Mt. Gelmir. Neither side of that war had anything to do with Frenzy, but it still appeared, because of all the suffering

@@buckyhurdle4776 While I don't know about seafoam's theory, I am fairly positive the Frenzied Flame _does_ have a will of its own/is a conscious entity. It's an Outer God. I would think that just because we don't see it manifest by itself or of its own accord (as far as we can tell) doesn't mean it isn't sentient. Nor does it being a representation of a concept or philosophy, such as nihilism, preclude it from also being an entity. "Living concepts" is a fairly standard trope for extradimensional eldritch entities.

Has to be the coldest boss cutscene in Fromsoft's history. A man merely saying he's suffered enough before ripping his own head off. Standing from the ground as an all consuming flame meant to destroy the world erupts where his head should be. Especially with the more ambient, unnerving intro to this theme playing.

There’s a theory I have that Madness, or the Frenzied Flame, isn’t something that we harness or channel. I think the Frenzied Flame is harnessing it’s victims. When one becomes the Lord of Frenzied Flame they are fully assimilated into the Frenzied Flame’s consciousness. Like that conversation with the Frenzied Finger Maiden, or when Vyke almost completes the path. That being said there’s something else that makes me love the Frenzied Flame even more. In Midra’s boss theme you can hear the violin of the buried Merchant clan, a massacre that was aimed at the wrong people. They were buried because they were suspected of partaking in the madness, but they weren’t, and they all suffered for it. I think the Frenzied Flame is channeling the sounds of their violins to us in the bossfight as a way of boasting. It’s proud of the aimless, unjust suffering that it caused. Not only displaying it, but once again assimilating it into its identity.

While this boss was pretty easy for me, this might have been one of my favorite overall areas in the dlc (and the game in general). The obscure means of discovering this location, the whole stealth-horror vibes of the abyssal forest (especially whatever tf those flame of frenzy monsters were), and ESPECIALLY this track when the solo violin and the synth/brass bass kick in with the nomad and flame of frenzy themes all at once.

One of the best boss reveals ever. The Abyssal Forrest was hell and the imagery of him rising up without a head was spooky enough. But when the fucking music hits right as the flame appears, you instantly feel like you are witnessing something extremely _wrong_ happening before your eyes, like this cosmic force of nature that was never meant to exist in the world has just arrived.

Ik it's what half the comment section is talking about, but I love how the use of St. Trina's lullaby mirrors the story of the nomads and Midra. It was given to the nomads in an attempt to ease their pain after being falsely accused and locked away if I remember correctly. Though ultimately the lullaby ended up being futile, as their suffering was too great, and frenzy flame was brought into the world, having prevailed due to their suffering. The song reflects this when the solo starts. It somehow breaches through the chaos of the song, albeit barely holding itself together. Near the end of the solo the St. Trina lullaby melody meagerly worms its way in, almost feeling like one last cry for help before the solo dies out very quickly in wake of a powerful, menacing melody that plays a few times throughout the song. We even hear this evil melody near the very end of the song as well, making it feel more inevitable and absolute. Just like the nomads, Midra was suffering as well. The difference is he changed his mind and rejected the flame after already pursuing it. Once again it was all for naught however, as his pain could no longer be fought, and so he gave in, giving way to frenzy. I love how both their stories reflect this in the song, and how both can be applied. It's definitely my favorite part of the song, and overall this may be my new favorite song from any fromsoft game. Amazing musical storytelling.

Everything before we even reach the abyssal woods makes a lot more sense all of a sudden: The veritable gauntlet that is the catacombs being the only way into or out of the abyssal woods, the vulger militia camped out at the entrance, the absolute darkness of the catacombs themselves so that they are harder to navigate and so that certain things that should not be there are easier to spot shining in the dark, the huge cannon imp, the imps themselves (mindless constructs that are immune to madness), and the Head Inquisitor favoring teleportation and spirit summons.
