An overview and retrospective of all my Lord of the Rings movie sets. Retro Media Room on X (Twitter): 👇 x.com/RetroMediaRoom?s=09 #TheLordoftheRings #bluray #dvd #movieset
@@zzygyy Blurring out every detail to the point of erasing things (such as the top of Gandalf's staff for example in one scene), giving things a white shiny edge from oversharpening, idiotic vignette effect in retrospection/vision scenes, just to name a few problems
Pretty nice collection you have there! I have some myself including vhs. The DVDs in the lord of the rings extended trilogy are only the extras, not the movies themselves, and the hobbit has the extras on Blu ray.
I met Elijah Wood a couple of years back and got him to sign my Lord of the Rings Australian extended Blu-ray box set. I especially asked him if he could put a little "Frodo" underneath his signature. Nicest guy you could ever meet. You have very nice editions of the films there.
Those steelbook are absolutely beautiful, all the the sets are but the steel books are definitely my favourite. I love the magnetic black blu ray case sets and then of course the original dvd sets, I was blown away when they came out. Steelbooks rule though, certainly in terms of looks and packaging. I always prefer the matte finish for steelbooks, look better and they’re not fingerprint magnets.
I have the DVD LOTR extended bought them separately as they came out and not in a set. I also have the Blu ray versions extended, but its the Best Buy exclusive which comes with the chess pieces. Also just blu ray of the hobbit movies extended.
I have the first box you showed, extended LOTR. I also have have the Hobbit dvd's, like yours, but bought separately. So, outer box around the three.. too bad. Then the regular (theatrical) blu-ray boxes of both and recently the Middle Earth Ultimate Collector box with both the BD and 4K in both versions. So 4 x 6 movies on 31 discs, wtf😅 love it, though.
@@RetroMediaRoom search up “lord of the rings blu ray blu tint” and you will see what I mean, it’s very noticeable when they are in the mountains walking to Moria. :) They fixed this in the new 4K editions.
You know, I haven’t seen the 4Ks yet, but this “tint” on Fellowship is something I’ve read about but never noticed. Even in comparison pics, I don’t see it. Maybe I’m just not as sensitive to it? Who knows.
@@RetroMediaRoom I can. I'm considering updating for BR version. And I know you haven't really seen all the BTS and so... But does any of those versions have the same audio comentaries / making off's etc... as the Dvd's?
Unfortunately, I don’t have LOTR in physical media. Well, the Extended Editions, anyway. I only have the movies on Amazon. And that’s great, but to have the Extended Edition would be awesome!!!!! Why do you have Desolation of Smaug before Unexpected Journey in your Hobbit set?
At the very least the extended editions on blu ray are rather cheap, and the 4K standard releases of the extended editions were just on sale and will be again.
I bought the 4K standard LOTR trilogy and just threw the 4k discs into the Blu Ray trilogy set. That way I can have the 4k and all the bonus features 😂
The dvd extended sets is my favorite also. I also have the movie versions I got them before I knew about the extended. I did get the blu ray which are amazing but I hear bad things about the 4k so I wont buy those.
10:55 The hobbit dvd set is in the wrong order it’s the hobbit: an unexpected journey, the hobbit: the desolation of Smaug, and the hobbit: the battle of the five armies
In my opinion, DVDs are still around not because it’s the number 1 best selling format but because it’s more cheaper to produce when studios are too lazy to put in effort, mostly if it’s a tv series (especially cartoons)
Directors like Peter Jackson and James Cameron are sadly examples of "overseen by the director" is not a good thing. Running them through programs that remove tons of the actual detail is the antethesis of what the point of 4k is. More detail not less texture and literally erasing out objects accidentally.
Outside of a moment or two that I noticed looked a bit pasty, overall I love the look of these new 4K transfers but yes what you have stated has to be taken into consideration and try not to go too ham with the filters.
You LOVE the Hobbit movies? I will never understand when people say that. What a MASSIVE let down they were. So utterly inaccurate. beyond BLOATED story. Overused, cartoony special effects (That Jackson literally apologized for). No grit to the films whatsoever, mostly clownish. Made up characters that never existed. Lord of the Rings characters that were NEVER there. Mostly poor casting. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. There are TONS of RU-vid videos out there that shred that trilogy into utter oblivion. This is coming from a person that worshipped the story of The Hobbit as a child. Bilbo was an inspiration to me. The 1977 Rankin and Bass version was FAR better that this ridiculous excuse of a trilogy. Richard Boone knocked it out of the park as Smaug in the animated movie.
I didn't grow up with the books or the cartoons so I'm biased towards all the films and love them, when you consider the behind the scenes hell they went through to make the movies come together as well as they did, it's pretty crazy.
@@RetroMediaRoom Go watch the 1977 Rankin and Bass cartoon. If for nothing else than the Gollum and Smaug scenes. As far as what they went through makes zero difference to me. The designs and implementation of the story are what matters. There are so many ridiculously dumb ideas in the trilogy but the thing that made me certain the entire thing was going to be shit can be described in two words: Bunny Sled. As soon as I saw that scene, I said out loud in the theater "Oh, FUCK YOU!". I truly don't know why I stayed for the rest of the film, but I knew for certain I wasn't wasting my time or money on the next two. Then Jackson, in his senile old age has the horrible idea of ruining the 4K version of LOTR by trying to make it look like his inferior trilogy of The Hobbit. Just so it looks "Seamless". Almost certainly the last release of LOTR we will ever get too.
