Is Tom Bombadil mightier than Sauron?

I remember much that has since been lost…
I remember the Three Rings, that were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven were bestowed upon the Dwarf-Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings, was bound the strength and the will to govern each race.
But all of them were deceived, for another ring was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged in secret, a master ring to control all others and into this he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One ring to rule them all, to bind them all, to enslave all that lived in freedom under the stars, and bring to them the domination of the Dark Lord.
But deception breeds deception, and arrogance breeds failure. For there was one, who would not fall to the whispers of the One Ring. One being, who did not falter when confronted with the greatest weapon of the Enemy. One… to whom this plain, golden ring… was just that.
For even when wearing the One Ring upon his own finger… Tom Bombadil was the Master…

Tom would slap Sauron and say “Take that silly ring off- you look better without that jewelry.” Sauron would take off the ring, apologize and then sit in the corner with the Valar. The end.

Austin struts out with a purpose, gives Tom the stone cold salute and stunners him right there where he stands, turns to Sauron and gives him the same treatment before downing a few steveweisers. The End.

I always liked the idea that Tom was instead a part of the Song of Creation and therefore not like any of the angelic beings. His lands, as he defines them, are His part of creation. He was First and will be Last and nothing within those bounds can harm him.

There is an obvious clue within what Tom says about himself, that coupled with a piece of trivia about Tolkien that provides more evidence than anything else. Tom says he is “eldest and fatherless”. If he is being honest about this he cannot be an Ainu, Eru is their father. Now Tolkien has explicitly said Tom is not Eru. So what’s older than Eru? Are you guessing “Tolkien!” That’s a red herring. Tom Bombadil was the name of a Dutch doll belonging to one of Tolkien’s children, and much as “Roverandom” was turned into story about Michael’s toy dog, Tolkien wrote a couple of poems about this doll. These poems became part of “The Adventures of Tom Bombadil”. It was only later Tolkien wrote the poem “The Voyage of Earendel the Evening Star”: the very first piece of writing set with the mythology of Arda. That means Earendil (the spelling changed) was the first character created but he was created *after* Tom. Similarly Eru, the Ainur, and Morgoth were all later creations. And now comes the twist. Tolkien’s bedtime story for Christopher becomes “The Hobbit” and is published to wide acclaim. Tolkien’s publishers push for more stories and Tolkien proposed more about Tom Bombadil (He was still very much more a poet than a novelist), but the publishers are adamant the readers want hobbits, elves, dwarves and dragons. So Tolkien sets about on his new story, incorporating his now expanded mythology but sneaking in Tom for what’s essentially a cameo appearance (just because he can, and he did have a roguish streak).
@punkypinko2965
@punkypinko2965 10 месяцев назад
@@danielriley7380 Exactly. Eldest and fatherless. He is eldest because he was a character in a poem predating The Hobbit and LOTR. And he is fatherless, because he is not a creation of anything in the LOTR pantheon. Also, Tolkien said in one of his letters, I think 144, that Tom was an intentional enigma. All the people trying to figure out who Tom really was or is are just heading down a dead end. it would be like if Bigfoot appeared in The Hobbit, would we need to explain who created Bigfoot? No, it would just be a cameo appearance, like you said. Tom is a mythological figure within LOTR who just appears and is not really part of the story. He might as well have been a dream.

Tom Bombadil, I can imagine, that he is: a form of Forest Gnome, (santa). He was good at singing, he was best friends with the animals and understood them, and spoke the same language. He said he was very old. Older than the forest itself. I think he was Eru himself in disguise. Because the ring didn't bite him. Tom was helping Frodo and Sam, in the forest, when the Nazgul came after them.

@WaggaDaBagga
@WaggaDaBagga 5 месяцев назад
@@UnseenHitman-1932 ? Don't mix the Holy Christian Trinity into Tolkien Lore. Don't forget that Tolkien was a Catholic Christian. And used his "Faith" and create a fantasy universe. Eru Iluvatar is the Lord God in Tolkien's Fantasy Universe "Middle" Earth. He has created: "The Great Song". But Melkor(a Vala) made his own song. Eru was there before everything came into being and is very old, older than the forest, and he can certainly understand animals and talk to them. And the ring does not affect Eru himself. Only his children. Tom Bombadill is not Eru's child, because the ring does not affect him. Tom sang and smiled. I can imagine that Eru has the ability to disguise himself, if he wants to. Nothing is impossible for God, my Lord, the Almighty Heavenly Father. And since Eru is the God in the Tolkien Lore universe. I reckon that nothing is impossible for him. Tom is not human and not a spirit. But within him (the soul) the spiritual within him. He has a beautiful wife. (She who is responsible for the trees, the light in Arda) these Melkor destroyed. So some elves didn't see the light so they turned grey.

Tom was outside of the Valar. Tom made the Valar. Tom Bombadil is Tolkien inside the story. Why did Tolkien make this character? I think he did it as a joke. Just a whimsy of imagination? I can imagine Tolkien laughing at the thought of himself in the story. The one that made it all up. That is why Bombadil was written in as a mystery.

Tom is a visitor/immigrant from another story, a fairy tale. The ring is deeply part of the narrative of Arda, a high fantasy with themes of good and evil and deep history, whereas Tom is a silly man from a silly story for kids. If Sauron attacked his realm with armies he could resist for a time, but Tom would eventually take Goldberry and leave for a story that wasn't so dreary.

There are some very subtle clues in Tolkien’s writing of the council and such. Tom would be ‘last’, could not stand alone. Overall kind and jolly as he is, to know the world around him had been emptied of joys and beauty would damage his spirit, draining him of his wonderful will. But while his world without and within were still intact, I don’t believe Sauron would have any ability to harm Tom. He is more an element than a creature. Like life and death, matter and thought, Tim simply is.

I'm gonna say that Tom Bombadill was really an avatar of Eru Eluvatar, or at the very least someone who truly understood Eru Eluvatar's true wishes, and also perhaps the essence of joy of Eru. Call him a secret creation of Eru so that even He could experience what life is like in his own creation. Of course, my other thought would be, that he is one of the lost blue wizards... but then again, who the heck knows? Maybe he's just someone who is one of absolute truth strength and love of the world, and just doesn't care for evil.

From the viewpoint of what Bombadil does for the narrative, he shows that the world is much older and broader and deeper than it appears to the characters through whose eyes we see it. I tend to believe that Tom is Arda, or at least the personification of the forest since the forest stretched over most of Arda in the beginning as the Music of the Ainur first sung it. I believe this is why he sings, why he stays in his realm. Still singing the song that made him. This is why he has no desire for bending others to his will, only to observe because Arda observes all that happens on it, but has no ontrol over what happens to it.

There are a lot of theories about Tom, I found what made most sense to me is he is a particularly mighty Maia, perhaps even more so than Melian was when she dwelt as Thingol's companion in Doriath. I think he is inherently more powerful than Sauron, based on the Ring not being able to alter Tom's being into an invisible state, and only because of his life of seclusion did Gandalf and Elrond believe him to be vulnerable to Sauron. As he did not spend the ages building a machine of war and evil armies, I think the White Council believed Tom would simply be overrun and beaten down by sheer numbers of foes. It's fascinating to imagine a final conflict between Tom and Sauron, with Sauron and all his remaining wraiths, balrogs, and trolls coming in unified strength at Tom. It would make an epic, but tragic tale.

Tom Bombadil is a poem character that Tolkien wrote for the Oxford Magazine before his wider Silmarillion stories. The character in LOTR is entirely a call back to his earlier work and more of a cross-over character than a being of Arda. He needed a Deus Ex Machina sort of character and used the funny, light-hearted character from his poems. In fact, Tom Bombadil is so unimportant to the world of Arda that he doesnt even have a Silmarillion entry. If Tom were inportant to the story, we would know more about him.

it reminds me of a book i read on the intelligence of dog breeds..it drew a distinction between intelligence and what humans often equate with intelligence, trainability/usefulness, but it said that a dogs vary in both intelligence and the desire to please humans, so one that doesn't care what we think might not be very trainable, but still very perceptive. so a creature could be extremely powerful, but if not concerned with rulership then not claim any dominion over lands and peoples. he seems to be like that...powerful but not like a king. he banished an undead but didn't go out of his way to crusade against all undead and get rid of them. i wonder why he liked the hobbits...it seems like he has an appreciation of "good" character and isn't neutral to the point of being cold and detached from everything..

Hot Take: when the earth was sung into existence Tom Bombadil came into being as a result. This is why he can draw such power from song and why he lives where he does. Both song and the land in its most natural form are weaved into his being. Without either, Tom would not exist. If you teleported Sauron at his most powerful to Tom Bombadil during the earliest days of the world then Sauron could do nothing to harm Bombadil. And while Tom could no doubt curb stomp Sauron if he so chose, he would probably not want to do any more than than sing the dark lord into a really long sleep. However, if Sauron were given the chance to corrupt enough of the land--much as Saruman did to the Shire--then Bombadil's power would wane and he would eventually succumb to the forces of evil (and over-industrialization).

Melian's connection to HER forest, and Sauron's connection to HIS ring suggest that Maiar who form a strong connection of some sort gain power at the expense of greater vulnerability if something happens to the thing/place they are connected to. It's been suggested that the hunter Vala Orome's horse and dog were Maiar that had taken those forms to serve him, and they seem to have had greater power when working with Orome as they didn't falter in the battles with Melchor. Then again Tolkien was known to do things for story purpose and not think them through until later.

Like as if he is made up of the "left-overs" ... the most fundamental elements of good, that originally came from Eru Illuvatar into all existence. I do think the Nameless things are much the same. I find it odd that no one seems to know where or what the 'nameless things' were or came from. Read Ainulindale towards the end where Melkor names Ea as his own kingdom in its beginning. Many spirits followed him and they became the 'nameless things' as is implied in Of The Enemies in the Valaquenta. It says he was not alone for many of the Maiar in the days of his greatness before he squandered it in fighting the other Vala with the worst being the Balrogs who even defeated Ungoliant.

Maybe Bombadil represents an ultimate expression of individual liberty, in that, a free man is master of himself. In a war torn Europe, the casting off of tyrannical rule (Sauron) in place of democracy was what WWI was largely about. Constitutions would come to replace monarchs. Tolkien's life was greatly impacted by that struggle. Bombadil is an 'everyman' literary device. His realm is himself, and he is the only master.

I think in some way Tom is analogous to Ungoliant. Ungoliant was intimately connected to Melkor's Envy. "She descended from the darkness that lies about Arda, when Melkor first looked down in envy upon the Kingdom of Manwe," Somehow or other she is a personal substantiation of Melkor's envy. I think in someway Tom is a personal substantiation of the other Valar's love and delight and understanding of Arda. They sang Arda into existence-thus Tom's singing everything. They delighted in its existence and they understood it completely. The source of Tom's power. They were not merely Lords of it they were the powers in it's very fibers. Ungoliant ended up living in a forested valley that was treacherous to navigate. Tom lived in a forest that was treacherous to navigate.

Tom Bombadil is in some ways a frustrating character. As readers we want to know more, and as readers who sympathize with the protagonists we want him to be moved to apply his clealry considerable power toward helping the forces of good. But that's not who or what he is, and just like the characters in the story, we have no choice but to take Tom on his own terms.

Tom (if it can be expressed like this) simply IS. That is what Tolkien says through Tom wife's words. He is not the Master of anyone else but HIMSELF. He is fully master of himself and that is why all materialization of the physical realm hold no power on him. Becuase he is the master of his being and nothing else can hold mastery of any apsect of himself. Gandalf in the counsil of Elrond mentions Tom would loose interest in the ring if it was to be given in Tom's keep. He would forget about it as no connection to his existence can be created.

Technically yes but has no care for such things long enough to make a difference. He would lose the one ring if it was ever given to him because he just would not care about it in the long run

I think there needs to be a differentiation between power and mastery/control. Tom Bombadil has power because of his mastery of his environment. His range has dwindled, a symbol that he is no longer able to master or control as great Of an area. Alternatively, Sauron has great power, and desires mastery over the world. Indeed if power alone can cause mastery of the world he would have done so. But as is evident by the overthrowing of his power with meekness of the hobbits, power alone cannot master all. I believe a head to head face-off between Sauron and Tom would have ended in Tom’s destruction, but that is not how either of the characters work. Sauron would rather have intruded and slowly eaten away at Tom’s dominion until Tom was left with nothing left to master, and would then himself dwindle to nothing.

I think the conclusion reached here is correct - the wisdom of the Council of Elrond was that Tom could not have stood before the Dark Lord. His power extended to his own domain and while he was not affected by the One Ring while in his own domain he also had no power over it and while there was a suggestion that it be sent to him for safe keeping there is no suggestion that he could destroy the ring but only delay, for a time, it’s discovery. Tom is an anomaly, the most puzzling character perhaps but i see no evidence to suggest that the powers he had were of a kind or indeed great enough to have defeated Sauron. I vote with the Council of Elrond.

A lot of people think Tom Bombadil was Tolkien's attempt to insert himself into the story somehow, so... in that regard, Tom might benefit from the world's strongest plot armor.
@j7a1k1e

Tom was less of a self-insert and more of a call back to some of Tolkien's earliest publications and work. He's literally not a being of Arda. Entirely unimportant to the story. A Deus Ex Machina that was only ever used for LOTR.

Glorfindel implied that Sauren would only defeat Tom after he had destroyed all of the natural world around him and all free people first. Then and only then would Tom fall, last as he was the first. If Sauren attempted to attack Tom without first achieving destruction of the nature around him then Tom would have the power and will to repeal him and protect his lady and his home. But Sauren that had achieved victory over all else and was able to destroy and burn the world around Tom would then be able to defeat Tom.

I always assumed Tom was sung into existence by the ainur, if not an ainur himself. He can accomplish so much through song alone it makes sense that he would be an ainur, or created by them at the least. Maybe he is a lesser one who chose to enter Arda and live there in seclusion.

What does Tolkien know about Middle Earth? I was about to make an even sillier joke but at times I wonder if Tolkien actually created this world or did it come to him from some other reality. So rich and complex it seems impossible to actually create.

Sauron is a mere fly to Tom. It's the Forrest that gives Tom power however he's the spirit of Arda while his Forrest stands nothing beats Tom but Tom can't be everywhere at once. Also it's not that Tom would Fall in battle but he would leave arda because ALL he loves would be gone

Tom Bombadil is Mirth. As Saron was a vestige of cruelty, so was Tom to represented the Mirth of the world. As stated, Mirth wouldn't survive in Saron's domain. And I still believe that Tom Bombadil is nothing more than Tolkien appearing in his own creation - as Mirth.

If Tom is Tolkien, he is Tolkien untouched by war. The graves from the great battles border him, but have no power over him. Part of his meaning seems to be that for all the great drama, death, and destruction, somewhere life goes on.
@PrometheanRising
@PrometheanRising 7 месяцев назад
Here's a random thought. He and Goldberry are also a sort of foreshadowing that all will not remain untouched in the Shire. Tolkien wants an untouched element, but he already knows what will happen to the Shire. In fact, the ring itself has already happened to the Shire, but when he brings it to Tom it has no effect. Tom remains untouched.
