I love the fact they used CGI only in necessary cases. Miniatures, costumes, figurines, lava tables... I hope that this type of practical effects will return...
@Eddie Venkman Speak for yourself, you underestimate how easy the human eye can tell when something isn't physically present. Unless there's something wrong with eyes, in which case I'm sorry
@@MaeMaeTube Also because PJ had to jump in and save the day, because the old director quit. So instead of having years/months to prepare. He had to leg it almost the whole time. What a legend. Sadly the movie still suck :P
CG makes it a lot less difficult. So little location shooting makes it a lot faster and easier to get more shots to choose from. Just imagine this without all the live horses, setting up scenes and camera's. There's a massive difference.
58:55 "We're only here to do one here, that's tell a story. We're not here to make great effects, we're not here to do cool sound mixes. We're here to tell Peter's story and Tolkien's story. That's our only function." My, I just love that.
No wonder the film won 11 Oscars. The effort and passion put into making the movie was immeasureable. It's a good thing if was released 20 years ago. 10 years more, it'll all be CGI.
I lost it when Christopher Lee started talking directly to the camera "There's something vaguely familiar about this situation...." and then I made the Dracula connection. Love it.
Gandalf is the only man that needs to shave to grow a beard. Unreal how much work goes into something like this. Thank you, from the caterers to the guy whose skull they molded 20,000 times.
such dedication to creating a masterpiece rather than relying on CG. 20 years old and still looks better and more real than movies today. i wonder if they knew they were making the GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME
I've enjoyed these movies multiple times a year for the last 15! Since I was under 14. I cherish them so much, they've brought so much peace and joy to my life. To any new lotr fans and finders, I'm glad you're here enjoying in the art and wonder. It's special.
watching all these people doing their very best, so we can enjoy these films, just makes them even better and much more fun to watch! Thank every one on the set!
When you watch the movies you will think wow the actors really made this movies into what it is and of course they are the best, but i wanna give a huge shoutout to everybody behind the scenes who worked soo hard to make it all happen. You deserve the credit too so i'm glad we're able to watch videos like these. You can tell that they are really one big family who have made a phenomenal Trilogy. I am a forever fan of Lord of the Rings ❤❤
Man does anyone ever get depressed about the trilogy ending and just wish you can go back and re live , the days these films where coming out... so many great memories nothing will ever come close to these movies,
I love that with these Behind the scenes films (LOTR) and vlogs (The Hobbit) they show pretty much every department involved in the filmmaking. From the main actors and director to the extras, costume makers, set builders and even the caterers. It shows how much appreciation they have for everyone that was involved into making these films!
I love seeing all the different time stamps people put and just getting a feel of all the different things that brought people joy in these movies. So much love went into this trilogy.
44:08 This is insane. When you watch the movie, you assume lots of it is CGI. I am so surprised in some scenes like this one that almost everything is a practical effect. This staircase, etc. is amazing!
Early 2000 were the final years when movies weren't littered with cgi. All these real sets make movies so much more beautiful and relatable. Shadowfax "actor" was my favorite, really well trained horse
@Codey Snow I wasn't being rude or anything I grew up on these movies and they are some of my favorites I just misunderstood what he was saying so don't be a fucking dick
Real sets do have their own magic, and it makes life easier for the actors but a nightmare for everyone else. The biggest reason why cgi is so much more prevalent these days then back when LOTR was made is that it’s significantly cheaper and easier to do it now. Back in the 2000s it was simply (as crazy as it sounds) easier to build miniatures and large scale sets, than to build it all on a computer.
i don"t think its strange at all when considering how extremely good the visual effects are, best effects in a fantasy film i have seen. its super rare to that a film crew earns a oscar for special effects these days.
That's just a testament to movie magic. 5:00 and Gandalf is sat on half a prop horse in a wheel barrow being pulled by Mike and pushed by Bill. And we'd never have known...
What a massive undertaking. Props to PJ and his backers for having the balls to shoot for perfection, no matter the effort or cost. They could have half-assed it and still had a great film.
Not all of them, Hobbiton has been rebuilt with sustainable material for the Hobbit movies, so you can actually go and visit the movie set in New Zealand (:
No they took apart Rivendell. But the site where they built it remains and it's a public camping spot now. It's a 40 minute drive from my house and it's amazing. They kept a few of the special big trees that were showcased in the movie on site. Truly magical.@@EvenstarSaima
45:50 He is so impressed over that one TFLOP of computing power that was set up in only 3 weeks.... I'm trying to guess how he would have reacted if he knew that in late 2017 you were already able to put 110 TFLOPS into your computer by just simply slotting a card in.... took seconds... That's kind of depressing and awesome at the same time.
very ambitious and passionate film maker. glad they make it right. this make me want to watch LOTR again. sadly this practical method mostly unused now bc of the very large budget.
The fight of Pelennor is one of the most beautiful and powerful scene of the complete trilogy and it looks very simple to do when they made it. Amazing
Thank you very much for posting this. I can't get my DVDs to work, and there was so much in this video (in all of the extras, indeed!) And not only that, but I wanted to see a bit of how the Orc with the diseased cauliflower head was designed and acted - of course the emphasis in this video wasn't on design so much - but there was in fact a few seconds of him (it?) was dealt with by the famous three, so great!
Well, LOTR scooped all the Oscars and I don't remember the Hobbit doing that. I know there were lots of problems on Hobbit but I think he means Technically and logistically here! But LOVED this footage. I thought I had seen all the extras and blogs, but it is so GREAT to see something new after all this time!
The Hobbit was obviously harder, but because of the very different circumstances. Del Toro had already set up most of the movie, and then PJ had to come in, with no time at all, and change it to be more what he would've done, with only a few weeks to prep, where he spent 7 years on LOTR storyboarding, planning, prep etc.. I didn't know how terrible a situation it was on The Hobbit, until I watched one of these videos on it. Now I know why it ended up being terrible in comparison.
I still love this trilogy all these years later all three films are in my top ten best ever I can watch them every week and still don't get tired of them and you can't say that of three films a lot normally you'll have your favourite one of the three but they are so integral to each other I can't pick one above the others and I know Peter Jackson did the hobbit movies but they don't come close to the first trilogy
