18:00 Basically Gandalf and Saruman are two of many "angels" of the Tolkien mythology, sent to Middle Earth to advise and guide the races against the Darkness. 5 were sent, called the Istari: Saruman the White, Gandalf the Grey, Rhadagast the Brown, and the two Blue Wizards who disappeared into the East and whose names aren't clear in the mythology. When Saruman betrayed his mission and Gandalf fell, the Valar (the major angels or demigods of the mythology) sent Gandalf back as a replacment to Saruman because he was the only one of the Istari/Wizard who remained true to his mission. EDIT: The proper Tolkien name for the "angels" are Maiar, they each roughly served a specific Valar. Saruman served Aulë the Smith, which is why he was easily corruptible. Ironically, or maybe fatefully, Marion (the true/angelic name of Sauron) also served Aulë in the beginning. Saruman and Sauron naturally had a mind for machinery and smithing, but above all, Order. Which may be why their names are similar, they're two of a pair. Gandalf served Manwë and Varda, the "king and queen" of the Valar which is probably why he's so incorruptible but he also served Nienna, the godess of pity, which is why Gandalf is brave but also has pity (pity has a negative connotation in our current time, but in Tolkeins time the connotation roughly was 'compassion')
@Crispy111
@Crispy111 3 года назад
@@Fnelrbnef I don't think Tolkein had a clear vision for them, I think they were just concepts in terms of physical literature. At one point in his life they failed and had one set of names, later in life they were basically guerilla warrior Wizards in the East and had a another set of names. The names change based on the context of their actions because they're Elvish.

Elves are simply "too hasty" for the Ents. I think they developed "Entish" on their own though, it can't be spoken by anyone but them as it's literally just low vibrations and swaying. Treebeard is always scolding people about "being too hasty" in the book because speaking quickly or needing an immediate answer is foreign to them, so being hasty is kind of synonymous with being angry or rude.

Leading with the extended editions is a surefire way to kill the enthusiasm of any first-timer to this series, especially if they're not already a fan of the LOTR-verse. Mrs. Movies is clearly bored by these movies, and who can blame her? Even though I like this trilogy very much, the theatrical versions are overlong as it is, and they clearly benefitted from the initial editing. Extended versions are for mega-fans still geeking out years after watching the theatrical cuts and just can't get enough. Next, they'll incorporate the bloopers.

I think people would have voted for him, knowing just how big the film was, that it was winning every other Oscar, and Gollum/Smeagol was such an extraordinary achievement in so many ways.

18:38 That's correct. When Gandalf killed the Belrog his physical body ended up dying but his spirit ascended to the realm where it came from. Since he accomplished such a tremendous feat, while sacrificing himself for the betterment of middle-earth, he was allowed to come back as a White Wizard. When he said he was Saruman he was speaking metaphorically meaning now he can be the White Wizard Saruman failed to be. In the lore White Wizards are good and fight against the forces of evil.

When Saruman tried to study and defeat Sauran, he tried to understand his own magic. He broke the white light into its constituent parts and he became “Saruman of many colours.” ( this was a bit too much for the films to get into) Gandalf said that “He who brakes a thing, to find out how it works has left the path of wisdom.” So Gandalf became Gandalf the white who was purer than the now Saruman of many colours. Gandalf can now defeat the magic that poisoned the King of Rohan.

We never had wizards, orcs or magic (unless you count magic as science not calculated). Not sure what you are going for here. As a history teacher I adore Tolkiens work but it's also hilarious since it is based on several things from our own world. And as a nord it's interesting since it's based on a lot from our folklore and old religion.

Recall how heavy the ring sounded when it fell to the floor in Frodo's Hobbiton burrow, how it caused Frodo's hand to weighed down when it was placed there by Gandalf. The closer to Mt. Doom Frodo gets, the heavier the ring becomes, a literal "anchor" around his neck. Yeah, the "real life" orcs have unionized and if you hire one, you get the whole lot! Karl Urban was also in one of the Bourne movies with Matt Damon; he was a bad guy (assassin). Brad Dourif = Wormtongue = Saruman's baddie in King Theoden's castle at Edoras, who poisoned the king's mind was Doc Cochran in the HBO series "Deadwood." "A man, an elf and a dwarf walk into a bar. ... " What's the punch line, y'all? Hobbits = Shirelings = Halflings. King Theoden = Captain Smith in "Titanic" = actor Bernard Hill. Would the ACTOR who delivered the motion that was captured be recognized in a new Osacar category? OR would the new prize go to the technologist(s) who developed the capture software? And would the artists who "fleshed-out" the captured motion character have yet another category in the Oscars?

Greetings fellas! Mr Cowboy explained very well actually but i can contribute generally about some issues... In the opening scene Gandalf and Durin's bane falls through the foundation of the stone. So guys Khazad Dum (Moria) much bigger than you think. When they fell they kept fight. Dwarves had made endless stair from the roots of the mountain up to its peak. One of the three peaks of Misty Mountains called Ziragzigil (Silvertine) by dwarf language khuzdul. Then, on January 23, 3019, Gandalf and the Balrog climbed the Endless Stair to the summit of the Silvertine. There they fought the Battle of the Peak, which lasted three days. During the battle, Durin's Tower was destroyed and the stairs were blocked. The Balrog of Moria was finally destroyed. Gandalf the Grey died and was soon returned to life as Gandalf the White. Gandalf was rescued from the Silvertine by Gwaihir the Windlord on February 17, 3019. (I copied pasted this part from internet) 7:14 small fixing... Uurk hai meets with orcs. If you look closely Orcs are smaller sized and careless. Orcs also doesnt like to show up at sunrise. Meeting in books happening after sunset. 7:25 its an Uruk hai medicine. taste like shit but makes body stronger and resilient. Motor oil made me laugh tho :) 12:06 Aragorn shouts: What news from the Mark. That word ''The Mark'' only called by rohirrim. Means ''The Land'' for rohirrim. So Aragorn's political manner just like he talked elvish with Haldir when they entered Lothlorien remember? 15:34 Frodo falls into bog. Its not about ring. Everybody can fall if they look and lit their own candle. At the end my favorite movie is first movie.I could explain why with pages but I dont wanna make ppl bored :) But all 3 movies are totally masterpiece. Take care

18:48 I was also confused so I had to look it up. If I'm getting it right, Gandalf is the same race as Sauron, the Maiar, which are immortal. Their physical bodies they have at the time can be killed and their spirit/essence will wander or linger until they gain enough power to come back in physical form, whether naturally or by being summoned back and offered a body, or something like that. Saruman is also a Maiar. I'm sure I'm missing some other major points but that's the gist of it from what I could gather.

@paulsmith8510 2 года назад
Pretty much spot on. The Istari/Wizards/Angels were sent by the higher Valar/Archangel/demi-gods at the will of Iru/God to guide the beings of Middle-Earth. It is said Gandalf was the only one to stick to his mission. Saruman was corrupted, Radagast avoided humans and stayed in the woods, and the 2 Blue Wizards appeared 1st but also disappeared. Saruman has fractured the White light and was Saruman of Many Colors. He studied under the same Valar as Sauron, they were smiths. Probably why Saruman was so easily corrupted, but had the most hope understanding Sauron.

In short and to not go into too much detail: Gandalf's true Name is Olorin and he is a Maiar, a lesser spirit sent by the high spirits/Gods of Middle Earth (the Valar) to help it's inhabitants. He has been put in the body of an old man (just like Saruman and the other wizards) to avoid hurting them if they ever fall into Darkness. Sauron was also a Maia (Much more powerfull of course) who turn evil.. The Valar to avoid it by restricting their powers and shape. So basically when Gandalf died he was sent back to complete his task.

Yup. Gandalf was sent back from death by Eru (God). Tolkien makes this clear in Letters 156 and 181. Gandalf passing out of thought and time is a direct reference to Eru as Tolkien writes that the Valar's business is only with this embodied world and time. Tolkien writes that Gandalf "was handing over to the Authority that ordained the Rules, and giving up personal hope of success" when he sacrificed himself in combat with the Balrog.

Another great reaction looking forward to part 2, and yes Gandalf was sent back by Eru Iluvatar to finish the task that was given to him and because he was the only Maiar left because of Saruman throwing his lot in with Sauron Gandalf was made head of the Istari and given extra powers and the white robs, also a bit of info for you Samwise Gamgee is based on what is called a Batman or what you would call an orderly basically a personal servant for a British Army officer from the lower ranks like a private or sergeant which Tolkien knew and had one himself during WW1 which was mentioned in a letter to a fan in 1957, Bernard Hill the actor who plays Theoden the line "no parent should have to bury their child" was told to him by a woman in Heathrow airport and he asked Peter Jackson if he could use it at the funeral of Theodred.

Rivendell and Edoras were both constructed on public lands in NZ and had to be built very carefully to avoid causing any lasting impact on them, and were taken down after filming ended. There was significant environmental concerns in particular with the Edoras set and they had to do quite a lot of work to restore it as it was. I believe all the other sets with buildings were constructed on private lands, in parking lots outside their studio, or indoors, or were miniatures ("bigatures") with the actors shot on green screen and composited in. The Shire was on somebody's farm, and still exists for tourists. All the other stuff was taken down after filming, and some of it reused for multiple sets so they had no choice but to do so.

quote from Gandalf as he describes the betrayal of Saruman: “For I am Saruman the Wise, Saruman Ring-maker, Saruman of Many Colours!' I looked then and saw that his robes, which had seemed white, were not so, but were woven of all colours, and if he moved they shimmered and changed hue so that the eye was bewildered. I liked white better,' I said. White!' he sneered. 'It serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken.' In which case it is no longer white,' said I. 'And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.' Saruman ceased to be The White just prior to when Gandalf went to him to seek aid, and had unwittingly removed himself from the Order, leaving the position of White open to one who had never strayed from the task: to serve as a voice of council to the free peoples of Middle-Earth and rid the world of Sauron's influence once and for all. Saruman abandoned the task for his own greed, Radagast preferred to assist the flora and fauna and cared little for the troubles of men, Dwarves, and Elves, and the Blue Wizards disappeared into the far East, and are never spoken about again though Tolkien did speculate that their deeds far to the East were probably of greater significance than anything the other three Wizards did.

They're both very method...coming up with voices, really diving into the character, etc. And Serkis is just unbelievable in bringing Gollum to life. The level of attention he put into the character is brilliant.

Gandalf and the balrog fell just like what we saw in Frodo's dream. At the bottom of the chasm they hit the water of a subterranean lake. The balrog was basically at home, and he knew the way out. Gandalf followed him up the Endless Stair to the top of Durin's Tower (no one had gone this way for an insanely long time)...this whole journey took days. Then they battled at the top of the mountain with Gandalf killing the balrog, which basically broke the mountainside. Gandalf died, but he was sent back by the God of this world to finish his task. An important note is that both Gandalf and the balrog were basically the same beings. They were Maiar, which were spirits that were meant to help shape the world. Think of Gandalf as an angel and the balrogs as demons. Sauron was also one of the Maiar. So if Gandalf or Saruman were to take the one ring, they would become something very similar to Sauron.

To answer your question, all three of the movies are equally strong, but if I had to pick a favourite, it would be Fellowship, just because, when it first came out, I thought, well, Ralph Bakshi tried and failed, I’m not sure it can be done, but somewhere in the first hour, after the twee Hobbiton sequence was over and the ringwraiths showed up, I started to feel like, damn, it CAN be done. By the end, I was thoroughly elated. Even though Tom Bombadil was absent.

Picking a favourite part of the trilogy is *hard*! For tragedy and redemption combined, it has to be the death of Boromir. So that would mean Fellowship 'wins'. But then there is the drama of Helm's Deep ... so that would mean Two Towers 'wins'. But then there is the charge of the Rohirrim and the "You bow to no one" and the 'sailing into the West' scenes ... so that would mean Return of the King 'wins' :chuckles:. And, of course, Sam and Rosie ... that always breaks me - that might sound odd as it is such a happy scene but it is because she reminds me of my wife and that bit always recalls to me the joy of having her in my life and the bitter sorrow of her loss. So, the short answer is I can't choose a winner here :D.

In the books the eye of Sauron was only seen in a metaphysical sense, by those powerful enough, like Galadriel, Elrond, and the Wizards...and Frodo, because he possessed the Ring. In his "previous" form, Sauron could take on multiple forms, elf-like, human-like, vampire, werewolf. Once his body was destroyed in Numenor's destruction, he could no longer take on a fair form. When he died a second time, when he lost the Ring, it took him thousands of years to form another body, and Gollum said his hands looked "burned", which means whatever form he took must have been humanoid and horrific.

The oscars are somewhat of a joke compared to what it used to be. It's really a shame it has become(more) political... Yes there needs to be more awards, especially since it seems that America doesn't make as good movies as they used to compared to other countries. Not sure about "first film" though. The Oscars should be about the quality of the movies/producting themselves, imo -Not about the genger, etnicitet, age or background of the people making or starring in them.

@@rikk319 He was writing about some of the changes he wanted to the Oscars - So I wrote about the oscars, and some of the actual changes been made. Yes, it is all about money and clapping each others shoulders within the (mostly American) business, but it used to mean something more for people around the world. "gender" and "ethnicity" - I was referring to why adding a best "first film" didn´t sound like a good idea to me. Why should it matter that it is some ones first film? - is what I tried to say before. It should be about the quality of the film, only. And not about people´s background regardless of it being; experience, gender, age, country, ethnicity etc. I know this is political, but it is also relevant. There are other filmfestivals for the upcomming directors etc. more suited for that, imo. The oscars should, ideally, be about the best of the best. Also each one of the Maia had been pupil of a Vala once. Gandalf was pupil of Nienna (goddess of compassion and healing) and Saruman was pupil of Aule(god of soil and craft) if memory serves right. Not sure about Radagast but I suppose he was pupil of Yavanna ( goddess of nature) regarding to his skills. So either Nienna sent Gandalf back or Mandos (god of judgement of spirits) did that which seems more accurate since afterlife business is within the domain of Mandos and he can easily approve a "white rank" handover between two wizards while he's resurrecting Gandalf

Song grew different because of Melkor's disharmony that's true yet Eru accepted disharmonized version of the song and gave it reality thus evil became a natural part of the earth. So to me it's more likely Eru knew gandalf was gonna get resurrected eventually and his return with white rank was gonna change course of events. That turning point led to Sauron's fall eventually.Maybe that was Eru's thought during the orchestration of the song yet his direct invovlement with gandalf's resurrection sounds contradictory for such a distant being.

The funeral for King Theoden's son is the one part where the movies do kind of ask you to care about complete strangers out of nowhere. But it ends up paying off longterm bc they are characters you will follow the rest of the series and care about. There's nothing in the series where it's totally irrelevant afterwards and doesn't build to anything (there was one such thing in the first book, and they chose to leave it out of the movie bc it didn't connect to anything later on). Even things that in the books are somewhat one-off (such as meeting Galadriel), in the movies they make a point to tie it in again afterwards. They don't want anything to belong to just one film.

The ' color' assigned to the wizards is more of a role/job. Radagast the Brown's role was to shepherd the animals and tend to the nature of the realm during these times. The 'Grey' was meant as what Gandalf had originally done: travel and inspire the peoples of Middle Earth into deeds greater than anybody thought they were capable of. The 'White' was to actively oppose the Enemy: Sauron. Sarumans role in Middle Earth was to rally the free peoples of Middle Earth and oppose the great enemy. When he turned away from that role he was no longer 'The White' and he mantles a new title: The Multicolored. In this way he becomes an agent of his own ambition. Some would say as this new title he's doomed to fail, in the same way that you could say Sauron is doomed to fail, but I personally think that this outlook removes the choices and valor of the free peoples themselves when faced with ultimate destruction. Anyway, Gandalf returns as 'The White', mantling the role as somebody who will take an active role in opposing the Enemy. It's at this point that Gandalf (who is an 'angelic being', as detailed in other posts) returns to Middle Earth to fulfil his newly assigned duty.

I love watching LotR reactions. But of all the LotR reactions I have seen in some time, this viewer feels the least enthusiastic about the trilogy. I often feel like she is quite bored judging by her comments. Now everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And I understand that not everyone is going to love LotR like those of us who consider ourselves huge fans of this universe. A couple of examples are how slow she thinks the movies are, and how she wanted to know if Rohan was even relevant. During the last movie she seem to be perturbed that the movies were all about this long journey to Mount Doom. As a huge fan of these movies I wouldn’t mind more of the epic panoramas with that fantastic score. But now that Rohan is widening the plot and the story beyond the journey established in Fellowship it seems to be irrelevant in her opinion. To each their own. I know it might sound like I’m complaining. But I’m merely sharing my observations about the reaction. I am curious to see if her enthusiasm changes at all over the course of the rest of the trilogy.
