One of the best "scenes" (in the book) is when Legolas and Gimli go into the caves of Rohan where all the women and children had been taking refuge. They discover beautiful arrays of stalagmites, stalagtites and water ... and Gimli proclaims it as a place which dwarves will go to "improve". Legolas is wary and fears they would destroy it with far too many changes, but Gimli replies that they would make maybe one chip with a tiny hammer once, after contemplating about it for a month. One of the best "warnings" of being careful with "the nature that surrounds us".

“If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end as to be worthy of remembrance.” You have to understand the Germanic mindset behind this line. Rohan is based much on pre Christian Germanic culture. Honor, bravery and steadfastness were all traits highly valued in this society. We also need to consider the King’s mindset at this point. “Where was Gondor when the west fold fell? Where was Gondor when our enemies closed in around us? Where was Gondor...” he trails off before he can actually say the words “when my son died.” This is a man facing all odds against him and yet he still wishes to fight. An extremely important theme moving forward into movie 3 and his comparison to how both he and Denathor process despair.
@britlitsch6571

@EvelyntMild
@EvelyntMild 3 года назад
Being from Texas, I can see the parallels with the Battle of the Alamo leading up to the battle at Helms Deep. Except we didn't have a company of Elves come to aid. Theodin's "...we will make such an end..." hits deep since "Remember the Alamo" is a phrase genetically ingrained in all Texans.

I think he might have confused him with Galadriel's husband Celeborn who was standing next to her at the greeting and is often forgotten. Fun Fact: Galadriel and Celeborn are Elrond's parents-in-law, Arwen's grandparents. I don't think that is ever mentioned in the movies.
@PhilBagels
@PhilBagels 3 года назад
In the book, Denethor did not know about the ring. Boromir went to Rivendell largely because of a vision with references to "Isildur's Bane." But nobody knew that that referred to. As they said in the intro to the first movie, "Mush that should have been remembered was lost." Gandalf had to do a lot of research to confirm that Bilbo's ring was indeed the One Ring. So Gandalf knew about it, and thus Frodo, and therefore Sam. And Saruman. And Gandalf would have told Elrond about it, but that's about it. Denethor would not have known. And Faramir was never tempted by the ring (in the book), and never took Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath. "By rights, we shouldn't even be here," says Sam. Yep. By the book, you shouldn't be there, either. Faramir was wiser and humbler than his brother. He understood well how the ring would have brought Gondor to ruin, just as it did to Boromir.

Elves are supposed to be light as a feather ('featherweight' according to Tolkien), so that's why Legolas can mount the horse that way. Not sure how literal it's supposed to be in the books, but they are certainly not bound by gravity in the same way as men and other creatures of Middle Earth.

Fun facts: - Treebeard's name is Fangorn, yep, the forest's name. - When the trees are aggressive towards Gimli, is because ents were "created" to protect trees from the anticipated destruction that Dwarves would cause. - Treebeard is kind of oak/breech, the books not mention nothing about, but "professional entmologists" say so - in the books there are another type of "small ents" that are half-tree and half-men that fight as well

That elf is Haldir, they are elves from Lorien, but Haldir is not Galadriel's brother (That was Finrod Felagund, who was killed by one of Sauron's creatures centuries before) He's just an elf noble. By the way, the elves of Lorien are mostly the remnants of the Noldor, the High Elves who returned from the Undying Lands in the West to fight Sauron's former master, not Wood Elves. (Legolas and Wood Elf nobility are Sindar, but most Wood Elves are Silvan elves - the different Elven peoples gets quite complicated.)

Around about the 5:15 mark ... yep, she's a good one all right! I do admire her ability to be so stoic and in-command of herself - you can sometimes see in her eyes when something has hit home but she is very good at keeping her 'poker face' to the world. We might have to offer her some honorary English-Reserve points for stiff-upper-lipdom :). I nearly commented earlier that I could see the Missus being excellent in a crisis and, possibly, just a little bit ruthless if she needed to be for the greater good. I am happy to see that she also has a heart to go along with that pragmatic spirit :).

Theoden gets a lot of shit from the main characters for taking refuge in helm's deep. As if any other option would have worked. Making Saruman throw thousands of orcs against the walls of Helm's Deep was the freaking smartest thing anyone could ahve done. Freaking aragorn wanted to face them in open battle. Yeah, that would have worked great.

Haldir...one of the Elven Captains of Lothlorian. Actually in the books it is Rohan alone that fights this battle. The king rides out to war, sending the women to Dunharrow which is further away from Isenguard and very defensible on cliffs (you'll see that in the next movie). Only the women and children that have already sought refuge there are at the Hornburg. Eomer is at the seige, Gandalf gathers the soldiers scattered ftom the battle of Isen, and the Trees (Hourns, conscious trees) cut off the other escape route. There is a larger company that rides out in the books, and Eomer and Gimli fight their way out of the caves (in the cliffs behind the wall, not in the keep)

I waffle back and forth about this opinion, because I saw all 3 movies multiple times in theaters before Extended Editions were released, yet all these waves of new reactors seem to immediately get recommended to watch Extended as their first viewings. I can't help but feel she would like the pacing better by watching the theatrical releases first, to then swing back around to Extended if she ended up becoming a mega fan.

Those big sticks are called pikes and they were given to them because they're assaulting known horselords. It's a perfect weapon against oncoming cavalry as any horses coming in droves will all impale themselves. Since horses don't go down gracefully, and range helps, pikes are incredibly long to break a front. Sort of a pointless weapon in a siege of a fortress though, but they were all armed with swords also. They're strong enough to carry both in full plate because they're Uruks, who are bred to be much stronger than average orcs. Interestingly though, they're still much smaller and weaker than Black Uruks of Mordor, who are quite strong and seldom even need armor to fight.

I love the movies, but hate how they changed Boromir going to Rivendell. In the books, Farmair has a dream a few times (and Boromir once) with the riddle: Seek for the Sword that was broken In Imladris it dwells; There shall be counsels taken Stronger than Morgul-spells. There shall be shown a token That Doom is near at hand, For Isuldur's Bane shall waken, And the halfling forth shall stand. Boromir was told by Denathor that Ilmadris was another name for Rivendell and to go there because Elrond was a lore master. He did not not know how to get there and ended up coming at just the right time to ask questions about the above riddle. In fact everyone present showed up at the same time due to a "coincidence" and were invited to the Council of Elrond since the same thing, the strengthening of Sauron/Mordor, was effecting them all. Elrond did not call them to come (like he says in the movie). /rant

I've had a lot of comments to make, but the "really long staves" and "they're trying to reach over the wall" remarks, I'd point to weapons like the pike, and other things generically called polearms. Their long haft is meant to allow 1-3 lines of infantry to put their dangerous end of the weapon past 1-2 lines of shields If you envision the S below to be a shield man, basically interlocking their shield into a solid barricade, and the | to represent the pole arms. S|||S|||S|||S You have 4 shields (extended as far as the line reaches, which can block arrows and take the brunt of an infantry rush without breaking. and between them protrude 9 blades or spikes that can be individually directed. Especially effective against cavalry, since pointed polearms (such as the pike) can impale a horse by the haft being set into the ground, and the point piercing the horse before it impacts the shield line, likely throwing the rider to the ground. [Even the best trained warhorse will try to stop moving forward once something is pressing into its neck or chest from the front.] Good catch in the eyes, I didn't notice until id watched a few times, but there was a scene where the fx were not in place, I've heard, but cannot confirm, there were contact lenses that were forgotten about during one shooting day.
