from Isabelle to tom nook, kk slider and redd, let's look at every single special animal crossing character's lore, backstory, and details because why not. / rocketelijah
Reese and Cyrus were already married in New Leaf. They have you "recreate" their wedding day for their anniversary in New Horizons. Cyrus calls her his wife after being introduced to a guy character for the first time in New Leaf.
@Leeloo_the_fox pretty sure she just says "Don't go falling for my Cy-Guy", not specifying that he's her husband. I've played a lot of New Leaf over the years lol
The NPC gossip is one of the reasons Wild World is my favourite AC game. The wildest one by far was Phyllis feeling like she was being watched, and eventually catching Pete stalking her through the window. 😱
The reason Capt'n sings about cucumbers a lot is because in Japanese folklore it is believed if you offer a Kappa a cucumber they will prevent rivers from flooding. I guess since cucumbers are green and kinda watery they just associate them with Kappa.
Also, giving Kappas Cucumbers also prevents them from stealing children away. As Kappa favors eating children who water too close to rivers. To which they grab them and drag them under. In turn, drowning the poor child. All to be eaten.
If you play Harvest Moon or Story of Seasons Mineral Town you can throw cucumbers in the mine lake and Kappa will pop out to accept it lol but he only takes cucumbers
🧑🏽🎨 Capt'n is Kappa..yes yes Not only associated with Floods and Stealing Children, but also Super Smart and a Gentleman. But don't Cross him or he'll eat your Heart, Liver and mostly Consume you starting with your FLESH!! Scary Stuff if you ask me.
A few extra details about Sable. She's 10 years older than Mabel and she loves soap operas About her relationship with Tom Nook. They were very close when they were young, they played together all the time and stargazed in the roof of the observatory at night. After leaving for the city Nook kept contact and frequently wrote letters to Sable which she would read before bed, she described them as "very cute". One day she received a wooden box, inside there was an incredibly beautiful high quality pair of scissors and a card from Nook wishing her a happy birthday, she had forgotten about her birthday because she was so busy and had no other friends to remind her, this combined with her knowing how much Nook was struggling in the city made her burst into tears, she still cries a little when remembering it. Sable prayed every night for Nook's safety and for his pure spirit to be protected from the harshness and apathy of the city, but alas he returned jaded and broken, "a completely different soul" as Sable said. We don't know how their relationship developed since then but Sable will still talk about him occasionally and mention things like how he has a beautiful singing voice
a few things: -Blanca isn't *just* a faceless cat. She's a cat who, apparently, is a very messy eater and loves spaghetti. But she wiped at her face too hard when wiping off spaghetti sauce, causing her to eventually wipe her entire face off, leading to her current appearance. Back in the days of Wild World and City Folk, she'd travel over WiFi. Once I got her in my town and someone had drawn the Joker's face from Batman onto her face. Freaked me out. -The reason Wendell is in PJs in some footage is actually not because of him sleeping in and being late. In New Leaf, if the town you visited in a dream had custom designs that the dream uploader was willing to share with everyone, Wendell was how you got those designs. There was no kiosk like in dreams in New Horizons, it was Wendell.
Rover is such an interesting character. Like, if you do a bit of traveling, at some point I feel like you will eventually encounter someone just like him. Someone who goes out of their way to talk to you and get to know you before eventually parting ways and never seeing him again. It's something to think about. There are many people in this world, but there is so little time to know all of them. Rover is making the best out of this situation.
It is true! I'm slightly traveled but I've met a lot of very interesting people that I had deep conversations with that I never seen again through the years and it was always really satisfying just knowing that they'd probably hold that conversation just as high as I did, even if we never see each other again.
Yes! I'm so glad to see some love for Rover in the comments. He's always been my favorite special character in the series, and despite how little we see of him compared to others in the franchise, he always had this feeling that there was more to his character than meets the eye. There was a popular theory during the New Leaf era that he was going to be the initial mayor of the town before the player got the role, which I was always a fan of
I really would have loved it if Rover was in the waiting area in acnh. Like he’s waiting on some mystery plane on the seat next to you and y’all have a chat before the game starts. I really miss him. Not to mention his design too!
Pre-release I thought it would've been a cool idea if he could be the flight attendant of the plane. It would fit with his traveling persona, and instead of having players stare at a black screen anytime they wanted to travel to a friend's island, they'd talk to Rover and he'd share tips about the game, like how Cappy does in Super Mario Odyssey. But alas, I don't work for Nintendo...
So here’s two really cute backstories one about Sable and one about Celeste So her big red bow was actually a gift by her brother one time her bday was coming up so Blathers decided to walk into Ables to get her sister a present, he walked into the woman section but got scared and chickened out. He later returned with more courage and when he walked into Mable who saw him run out before asked if he there was a problem, he told her about Celeste bday so Mable helped him pick out a big cute bow for his sister And for Sable, the pair of sisters she uses everyday was also a birthday gift but given to her by Tom Nook. It was recently after he left to become a big entrepreneur in the city, but he wasn’t making alot of money and knew it was Sables bday so he spent the only remaining money he had to buy her a nice pair of scissors which she uses everyday
@@vanyadollyabsolutely, idk how long I'd been playing but I remember being mystified when suddenly I got extra dialogue from the authority characters in wild world. I remember Nook once told a story of how Timmy and Tommy had tucked into one of his snacks (a pot of honey I think) because they were copying him and trying to be just like him. For some reason that stuck in my brain, inaccurate as it may be, but it humanised Nook to child-me lmao
Some quotes from Sable to make the story even sweeter. "Inside the wooden box there was a pair of beautiful burnt orange colored scissors, incredibly strong and sharp, the finest scissors I had ever laid my eyes on". "The enclosed letter said 'happy birthday Sable', so sweet, I was so busy with work I had forgotten it was my own birthday, to think he would remember". "I'm sure life in the city was hard for him at the time, and I knew his job paid poorly. So for him to buy me those scissors . . , when I think about it it makes me so happy that I cry"
Franklin isn't just paranoid, he was absolutely a target in the original gamecube AC. 😂 He was invited over "for dinner" by Tortimer, and he's hiding because the villagers are looking to complete the main course.
@@CatalinaLinal7710 That's why it was so great! 🤣He had a whole rant about how he'd been lured to town and the villagers kept pinching him. Best AC holiday ever.
As someone who grew up in the Northeast, I had frequent panic attacks whenever I played during a snowstorm. Nothing worse than having the power come back and being greeted by Resetti as a kid.
Gracie is also a man in the Japanese version with their name Grace being associated with a drag persona. Same as Saharah and Blanca but those were changed unintentionally. The Western translation team associated Saharah's long lashes with being female, it seems.
Kapp n talks about cucumbers a lot because his origin is the “kappa” (a Japanese yokai) that love cucumbers!!! If you research more things about them you will see things start to add up LOL
I could be totally wrong, but I think Harriet's blue, white and red apron in CF was just meant to match a barber pole's colour scheme. Sure, poodles are often associated with France and all that, but her dialogue doesn't really sound French-influenced - for example, she calls you "shug", which isn't very French at all lol.
I was thinking the same thing with the barber pole. Also this is my headcannon Harriet is a Southern Belle like from New Orleans or something. That is just the vibe I got as a child playing the games. Or the 60s hairspry era lol. But I miss her and Shampoodle shop.
Sad you missed the weird unexplained connection between Rover and Blanca! They have matching names in Japanese (simply Strange Cat and Suspicious Cat, respectively) and Rover seems to be looking around for Blanca in Wild World.
I thought having a deserted island would mean finally building a shop for every single one of these characters, and I hope a future game can have us build like a shopping district with all the entrepreneurs, a government section for all those characters, and an island with houses
As for 28:27 - there's suggestion in the lore that your character moved from the human world to live with the animals! So all the real world locations would still exist - animals just live in a hidden world that humans rarely take part in.
@@OstentatiousGrace True, I remember that. But that begs the question, is he going to the human world to see those places, or are they in the animal world?
Something interesting about Copper and Booker is that Copper being an Akita is a native dog breed in Japan, the origin country of Animal Crossing, while Booker being a bulldog that originated from England might explain the language barrier
For Digby/Lottie - Lottie has a HUGE crush on Digby in canon. I’m not sure if they’ve ever gotten together officially though. She talks about it to the player in the original Happy Home Designer and in Pocket Camp (during some events) AND even one time where she took over the official Animal Crossing Twitter.
Watching this video makes me giddy about Animal Crossing... but then I remembered that Animal Crossing hasn't had much emphasis on characters in years, which SUCKS! When I think about the original Animal Crossing, so many ideas are novel. Like, Tom Nook is a tanuki, which in Japanese culture are known to be a little shifty and can change shape. This is represented in what he sells, which is furniture, which you can change into the shape of a leaf! Furthermore, many Japanese business have a tanuki statue to symbolize good luck! Brilliant! Then, we have the museum curator, which you would expect to be wise and knowledgeable, and of course they made that an owl! The old town mayor that is as old as the town itself is of course a turtle, one of the longest living creatures. The mail man has to have an easy way of traveling, so he is a bird that can fly. Of course, they could've left it there, but they decided to make 3 birds in charge of the mail service, with a love triangle between the three! I love what they also did with the police! Having one being an active akita and a lazy bulldog is so smart! I love it! Then, we got Joan, a boar that sells turnips. Boars are known for being a little secluded, but they can also eat turnips! The guy in charge of the fishing tournaments eats fish and the guy in charge of the bug tournaments eats bugs! Nowadays, I can't think of anything New Horizons did to really expand on this and most of the characters feel so flat to me. It's sad and it sorta removes the magic from Animal Crossing for me when there is nothing to say about the world.
To add onto this, Gulliver being a seagull that washes up on shore was super clever on Nintendo, since they're associated with the seas and beaches. Same with Redd having the appearance of a sly fox who tricks players into buying fake pieces of art. In the Japanese version he's labeled a Kitsune which are known to be enemies to Tanukis- the creature that Tom Nook is. SOO many ideas like this are why I was drawn to the game as a kid, and make me appreciate it much more as an adult
CJ and Flick are definetly a couple. I do not refer to my friends as "partners" and I don't think a roommate would really call their roommate "partner". And if you scan CJ's Amiibo card in HHP, Flick will live in the same house. Also inviting one to the Roost will also bring the other. Idk, 2 people living together, vacationing together, calling each other "partners", sure as heck sounds like a romantic relationship. Also I don't know any cishet man that would call anyone "fish-tonista" 😂
@@NiggaKilla-ub6hs Your name outs you as a troll so nice try. I hope you know that many of the characters were intended to be male but were made female in the English version. Including Gracie.
In New Leaf, Rover actually refrences Animal crossing for the game cube, saying something along the lines of riding trains since some time in the 2000s (I took a picture with my phone, so I'll probably put the exact line of dialog here a bit later dw) I ran into this when I decided to make a new character in my old town and try to play it a bit again from the begining and somehow went: "Wait, isn't that when the original animal crossing came out?" even though I never knew what it was to be begin with xD Just a hunch I guess that ended up being true!
I love how much of a pure musician K.K. Is, even slipping you bootlegs because he spites his record label. If that doesn’t scream down to earth musician I don’t know what else does
It's really neat how much we can interact with the special villagers through the café and the happy home designer island on New Horizons. I almost forget about these features sometimes.
I wonder if Booker being an English (or whatever language you as the player choose) language learner is a weird translation thing where in the original Japanese, Copper is a very traditionally Japanese breed of dog, and Booker, as a bulldog, would be from somewhere else (likely England), where speaking Japanese is very uncommon. Either way I like the characterization that he probably moved from far away because he was interested in the country your town is in, and now he just wants to try and do his best to help the people who live there.
Can we please talk about how animal crossing pocket camp has so much cuter wig/clothing options 😭 and literally a lot of these wigs can even be DIYs like for example for the pink Sakura bun wig can be made with a bun wig and Sakura petals, which would be another cute DIY for the Sakura season
Yeah pocket camp was made to have a longer lifespan than any other animal crossing game and therefore was given its own team of devs who just continued to develop new items and make the mainline players jealous 😂
I'm surprised you didn't mention that the reason Blanca's face was gone in the original was because she ate spaghetti and wiped her face too hard, this *literally wiping her face off* Also, didn't realize Redd was in THAT many backstories Edit: You forgot that Wisp used to serve someone and hand souls to them in the original, that was where the catching 5 souls came from
I don't remember 100% but I also think in CF that Lyle had a job digging either graves or fossils before Happy Home. That he had to lay low for a while cause he got caught. 😅 But I miss getting the know the characters and the episodes of learning their back story.
Actually Timmy and Tommy have slightly different ear shapes while hard to notice it normally on Halloween they go as the other and you can see a hat on their heads which have specific ear shapes and that’s another way to tell them a part is by the ear shape
Here is something I noticed about Gulliver and gullivaar, they have different eyes, Gulliver has + shape irises his eyes as for Gullivaar has x shape irises in his eyes.
Cornimer is definitely Tortimer dressed up, haha. Also, I feel like Bonnie from fnaf sort of looks like Zipper. (I'm pretty sure Zip came first?) Blanca is one of my favorite characters from the og game because I liked to draw her face. Once I gave her a cyclops face and she loved it. Another time I drew Rover's face on her, and she accused me of doing scribbles.
Ok….. but why is my life story ALSO going to school for anthropology/archaeology only to end up in a museum in my 20s 😅 me and blathers are same same lol
Should point out. It is common for those who are sailors to not know how to swim. So Gulliver not knowing how to swim or swim pretty poorly is rather truthful. Though, as they say, the best way to learn to swim. Is to throw you into the deep end first.
I’m kinda sad that we don’t know more about Phineas, when he started showing up to my New Leaf town I fell in love with him. I wish they brought him back 🥺
I saw a fan comic once of him tying presents to his balloons and sending them out for the player to find. Unless Nintendo cracks down and outright says this isn’t true, I’ll stay convinced this is what he’s doing today.
Copper has also been known to engage in a bit of town gossip, asking the player to get more information on the postal love triangle in the GC one, Pete also mentions his crush on Phylis in GC Great video!
19:56 In ACNL after you work for him for a while in the cafe public works project he will give you his gyroid and he says that somebody else a while ago gave him a gyroid and he tried to make his own gyroid so thats the like lore behind the brewstoids :)
Kapp’n sings about cucumbers because it’s connected to lore associated with the kind of creature he is! He’s based on a Japanese river yokai called a Kappa and one of the ways to get rid of them/befriend them is by giving them a cucumber!
Hey Elijah, I have been watching you for a long time now and I love the videos. I was wondering if maybe you could look at the white (paper?) background you have for certain bits because it makes it hard for me and possibly others to watch the videos sometimes, still love the videos and hope you have a good day :)
I always just assumed that Tortimer was Capn’s dad because Capn’s whole family stays at Tortimer island. Of course looking at the characters now, it’s clear that Tortimer is a tortoise and Capn is a sea turtle, and they talk and act completely differently. But I do have to wonder why they were out there with Tortimer if he was retired and therefore probably not hiring them?
There has to be a military in the AC world. I have Hopper (he's my dad) and he mentions being a veteran and going to bootcamp. Same for Harry (who I hate)
The reason Kapp'n really loves cucumbers is kappas, the yokai (Japanese folklore creature) he's based off of *really* like cucumbers. They also like eggplant and melon. I'll let you do your own research on why they're obsessed with cucumbers specifically though 😅 (the eggplant is a bit of a hint)
Brewster is a pigeon and pigeons (both male and female) have something called 'crops' in their throats and that's how they produce the pigeon milk that Brewster will ask if you want in your coffee. They usually produce the milk and give them to their young, so maybe Brewster offers it to you because he sees you as the child he's never had.
I always assumed part of the reason Leila offers so little for things is 1. Grams has stated they don't use Bells on the island, therefore Leila probably has very limited supply (she's also a child and wouldn't have that much anyway) and 2. It already made sense to me selling island items on the island wouldn't go for much because like... that's all they can get. It's like how your town's native fruit sells for less in your town.
31:32 Now that I think about it, the gyroids are like this funeral sculptures, and the original name of the Club LOL it's Club 444, and takin in consideration the symbolism of the 4 in the japanese culture, that place was haunted no doubt on it. (That or maybe Shrunk has some secrets about it)
I feel bad because i didn't enjoy new horizons the way i used to enjoy playing wild world or new leaf... The characters had their own personality, they had more deep and interesting dialogues... It felt like it had more soul.
Once Fuchsia told me she was in a rebel in her younger days and was in a motor cycle club or gang or something... which kind of explains her catchphrase and piercings maybe?
Amongst others Tom Nook and Captain are Japanese folklore characters for example Tom Nook is a play on words for the Tanuki, however Tom Nook and Captain are not the only Japanese folklore characters this carries on to Red the fox I believe a couple others that I can't remember right now
kapp'n is designed similar to a kappa, in japan there are stories that kappa likes to eat cucumbers, hence the songs :) also cyrus's story about the motorcycle and the way his hair is styled could mean that he was in a bike gang (for a period of time japan have a lot of bike gangs) cyrus could very well be one of the gang member who have gave up his bike gang life for the love of his life! :D
