As a child it Shipley Glen was magical. It was like being at the seaside for the day. We'd walk there in those days from Windhill.

My grandparents bought the Japanese Gardens from Mr. Hartley in 1926 and ran the tearooms there for many years. The Gardens were created by Mr. Hartley for his wife who was an invalid. The small castle on the island in the boating pond and the arches in the gardens were made from cinder/clinker and whitewashed. It is a great shame that the Gardens and fairground were built over. By the way, the Hen you refer to was actually called the Duck. It was an open vehicle, probably a car, with modified bodywork to look like a duck with seating for about 8. It used to go in a circle near where the swing boats used to be.

It may be hard for some to comprehend but places like Shipley Glen were so magical to so many kids who were growing up in harsh poverty. I grew up on an estate in the 90s not too far from here and this place was such a beautiful escape. I’ve not lived in the area for a very long time so it’s very sad to see it disappear because those estates are still there.

Sensational video and presented like a professional. Far better than what is on tv. I've said this before, I'm an overweight 51 year old that drinks too much but I would give my right arm to come with you on these adventures. You may need to wait for me to catch up but I make a decent brew! Great video Darren, you're one of the best on this platform.

Darren, just watched your video of Bradford and now just watched this video. i grew up on baildon green and remember walking through the woods to the funfair on rainy/foggy sunday mornings with my two mates, i was approx 8 years old. We would climb over the wall into the funfair and play on the swings for free. They were the kind a bit like a gondola, with two ropes that were pulled alterternatively and the swing moved, i seem to remember they were red and yellow.. There was also the aerial glide that we used to play on and climb on. i remember also the old penny arcade games that used to line one of the sides of the funfair, the type where you fire a steel ball and try to land it in one of the cups and if you were succesful, you turned a round handle and you won a packet of fruit polos or something. We also used to swim in the reservoir at the bottom of the glen and collect tadpoles there too. i had a fantastic childhood there,

My mother was born in Bradford in 1926 in Melville Court, known as Sh*tpot Yard by the locals. She developed dementia in her later years and would constantly talk about their annual trips to Shipley Glen from the Woollen Mill where her father worked. It seems like it was a magical and exciting place for a child growing up in 1930s Bradford.

I seem to remember that somewhere near the garden lake boat ride, there being another garden with a little railway in it where you sat on it straddled the track and the train just went back and forth. (A bit like the ones in Keighley and Shipley) but I have never been able to find photos of that so not sure whether I remember incorrectly. There was a youtube vide with a bit of the garden boat ride too. I guess you will cover the fairground in a different video as there was a lot to cover there. Great video for memories.

Damned Darren, thanks for these episodes, all my childhood flooding back but not as far back as the Victorian era 🧐. I was correct when i said last week (and in the past on Saltaire) that group walking took place from the Glen pub/tea room/amusements on Bank Holiday Monday (Easter?) As a family from in and around Birkenshaw and Batley it was a trip out, bus to Bradford, then Saltaire and walk to the Glen Railway and up to the Glen amusements. Kids had pop and crisps, adults a few beers, a rest then the group walkings over to Ilkley then the main attraction for us kids was the train ride back to Bradford. Your film shows the crowds walking on the Glen top. There was also another pub on the Keithley Road(?) which was another pit stop before the Ilkley Moor walk started. Im sure some others who follow you must remember the Ilkley walks on that Bank Holiday Mondays. Honestley im not imagining it 🥴 Anyway Cheers DougT
