In this lecture, Dominic Sandbrook, the acclaimed historian of Sixties Britain, marks the 50th anniversary of the City of London Festival by looking back at Britain in 1962. Fifty years on, the Britain of Harold Macmillan, Acker Bilk, Jimmy Greaves and James Hanratty feels like a vanished world. But was life back then really so different?
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:

For someone born in 1974, he does a good job, but I would have liked a little more analysis, which begins only at around the 30 minute mark. But it's still too descriptive (very well done description) and inward-looking: Dean Acheson's 3 sentences, rejection by the Common Market and the Cuban missile crisis were not the only events beyond Britain that shaped Britain. Did the withdrawal from empire lead to rising self-centredness in Britain?

Mr. Sandbrook possesses that rare ability needed to hold his audience: interesting tidbits about life in 1962 Britain and a mellifluous voice. The things one learns….for free no less. I’m all ears.

Sorry for my outburst. Yes, women don't have to drap out carpet and beat it any more. That said, I look around me, and I see women going crazy running a house, cooking meals, raising children and, oh yes, having a career. The lucky ones have domestic help (and from what I've heard, SHE PAYS FOR IT!) We still have a way to go before equality, in my very humble opinion.

Free from household drudgery -- give me a break! The only way you're free woman is if you have a cook, a cleaning lady, a child minder! THEY can use the washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc. Besides the above, great lecture!
