Hey guys! Today, we return to the world of Disney Channel Original movies with The Luck of the Irish. It's a movie about a kid who finds out he comes from a leprechaun family and it's trying so hard to be Irish but it's also very bad at being Irish.
I'm Irish/American so I thought this would be fun to cover as a late St. Patrick's Day thing. I would love to see an actual Ireland native talk about this movie so feel free to send this to your favorite Irish RU-vidr (and then recommend their channel to me because I'd love to have more Irish accents on my feed. XD
I hope you guys like this one and are staying safe. Have a good day and I'll see you soon! Bye!

So the more I worked on this video the more pissed I got that Disney tried to make a bunch of white people seem like a marginalized community in the present day instead of actually turning their attention towards racism. With that being said, I'm linking a nonprofit that I love here that's actually doing great work to promote social justice. hateisavirus.org/ Hate is a Virus is an organization that is raising awareness and funds to support Asian communities and businesses and combat the rise in hate crimes being directed towards AAPI due to the pandemic. If you are able to, I encourage you to donate or purchase some of their merch but if you can't I ask you to sign up for their news letter to stay informed on how you can help AAPI in your community. If you know of any other resources on this topic feel free to let me know and don't forget to rep your favorite Asian owned businesses in the thread down below. Thanks!

America's history with immigration is a rocky. While the Irish did very much face some discrimination(especially the KKK but they hate almost anybody who isn't a White Anglosaxton, but that's beside the point) but they were far from the most marginalized group during that time. Its actually something that's an interesting and depressing point in interesting. An American Tail is a film that does it in a fashion that well done that I didn't even notice what it was all about as kid.

@@shelbymckinney8888 Exactly! Which is why the whole movie trying to make them seem marginalized in the present tense...it's not a good take disney channel.

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I think what the writers should have done is put more enthasis on the Irish lore rather than the discrimination aspect. Like mention the Leprechaun stuff earlier in the movie and have that be the main driving point as to why the family had to hide there Irish heritage and it would have been a little better. Also is it me or did the last half of the 3rd act just turn into Space Jam.

i remember watching this as a kid and it was so weird. it's like they wanted it to be Irish but there weren't a lot of actual Irish things in it. the whole thing was so weird. things that could've been in the film that weren't: - Irish stew - Irish Gaelic - IRELAND - Irish people from Ireland - what the face on that coin was from - why the dad doesn't seem to know his own heritage - what Bonnie's heritage is since she wants to get all up in Kyle's face about it - why would they give a teenager a special coin instead of just leaving it in the house where it's safe - what the hell is leprechaun magic

Conceived as a Saint Patrick's Day film, it was first broadcast on Disney Channel on March 9, 2001. I watched the movie, the year I was in 8th grade at Krueger Middle School in San Antonio, Texas at that time, during the early 2000's.

I grew up watching the Disney Channel original movies and the few that I enjoyed was the Thirteenth Year the Luck of the Irish and the Phantom of the Megaplex and I actually enjoyed more this movie even though nowadays it has a lot of cultural stereotypes by the time it was a fun movie with Irish culture and stuff and even though it looked weird the scene when the mom was making Irish food was so delicious I wish I could try them also I had no idea until now but the guy who plays Sheamus was Robbie Rotten from LazyTown may he rest in peace

when he said "well at least they got paid!" i was so shocked, i was like, they did not just say that and then spend the entire movie pretending like a bunch of white people were the most marginalized group ever?! but of course they did, lmao, it wouldn't be an early 2000s movie otherwise.

I hate how Americans think that because they are vaguely connected to Ireland that they can just use a culture they aren't a part of for jokes or discrimination points
@AveryTalksAboutStuff
@AveryTalksAboutStuff 3 года назад
I definitely don't like how it almost dismisses white privilege and suggests that white people in the 2000s in America know what true discrimination is. And they really don't even know anything about Ireland (although, I'm just Irish American whose been handed down traditions so I'd like to see a proper Irish person talk about it.)
