As an S5 user, I feel a sense of pride seeing the reaction to the S5ii from all the reviewers. We know how amazing the camera is, but now that it's fixed its "fatal flaw" everyone else can experience just how much of a joy Lumix cameras are to shoot with. Panasonic really puts a lot of thought into their cameras and while I wish they solved the AF sooner, we can definitely say it's paid off.

panasonic ruled the video world from 2010-2015. I've been waiting for them to get back on top.

I picked up the S5 last year and have loved it for both photo and video work. Definitely upgrading to the MKII in a few weeks. I'm so excited about this launch.

Great work Sam! So cool you managed to go to Japan to try them out! The autofocus was the missing link. I use Sony but if I was starting over now, I’d get this.

I think the best thing out of all of this for the likes of you and Josh... Lumix is going to blow up this coming year, being the more affordable and better option than most now... Which means your channels will also get smashed with new users looking at tutorials and content to support. I always felt Josh and you were doing amazing concentrating on the underdog camera... AND HERE WE ARE! Great video... Sucks the USD is so strong against the pound these days. Can't wait to invest in one of these beauties.

Great to see Panasonic address the elephant in the room. Loved everything about my S1 except for the autofocus. S5II will do wonders for the Lumix brand!

but, IMO, equally as important to me is the ability to toggle on and off exposure features, such as toggling on and off waveforms while recording. Very great feature. I love this camera--the best and easiest to use I've ever owned.

Thanks for the excellent video, Sam. These videos do help in evaluating a camera purchase. Since I have no camera/lenses at the moment I was looking at either a Micro 4/3 or a Full Frame body. The Lumix S5 II/S5 IIx changes all that for me. With the Lumix S5 IIx (coming in May) I will finally be able to have the camera I've always wanted from a Lumix body. Note: I've used the Micro 4/3 cameras before - Lumix G7, so I know what the Lumix Micro 4/3 cameras are like. I've compared the prices of Panasonic and Sigma L-mount lenses compared to other manufacturers of Full Frame lenses - there are plenty of relatively inexpensive lenses. Love the Panasonic Lumix f/1.8 prime lenses - going to get all five too for all the types of photography I will be doing. Also, Sigma has released all the lenses they have for E-mount in the L-mount. The Sigma i-Series lenses look quite nice. From all the videos I've seen so far on the S5 II the new PDAF is amazingly accurate. Saw a video comparing the S5 II to the Sony A7 IV - the A7 IV lagged behind the S5 II almost every time in acquiring focus. Can't wait to see other Lumix cameras come out with PDAF - Full Frame and even Micro 4/3. I will get better low light photos going with the S5 IIx when it is available. I'm going to be doing lots of astrophotography and low light photos, so getting a camera with a Full Frame sensor makes the most sense for me. Panasonic hit it out of the ball park with the S5 II/S5 IIx and the cameras are only pre-production right now. I'm sure that the PDAF will be even better once production firmware is released with the cameras. Would like to see them update the firmware with 10-bit HEIF images for stills, because you get better color reproduction vs. 8-bit JPEG files. Shouldn't be that difficult.

Soon as I can, I gotta grab one. Have the S5 currently and have loved it. So that’ll become the perfect B Cam once I get the Mark II

I use my Fujifilm X-S10 on a daily basis as a RU-vidr and I am satisfied, but as you mentioned: The S5 II offers so much more in terms of video. Of course it comes down to Skills, but sometimes the tools help to develop them and maybe lead to the next step as a filmmaker. Just having different customs modes on the dial would be nice and I Iooove the 20-60mm. Although it’s only a kit lens, the focal length in combination with the IBIS is sooo good. F3.5 at wide end is still ok for vlogging and with some zoom you still can separate your subject. Size also decent for FF. Went to BIC camera in Tokyo and Osaka two times already without buying it.. but next time I go I can’t say no 😅

I wish this was around a year ago. I tried the S5 and the GH6 and loved the video centric features but hated the lack of competent autofocus. I ended up going all in on the Sony A7IV and a bevy of E mount lenses. I don’t love the Sony colors and would switch to the S5 IIX tomorrow if I could afford to. Now I have to figure out how to offload the Sony system. I always said if Panasonic could get the autofocus to work in their cameras along with all the bells and whistles they throw in their camera systems they could be a force to be reckoned with topping Sony or Canon. Great video by the way and well done Panasonic! I can’t wait for future iterations of Panasonic models that bring the phase detect autofocus to the table.

It's almost come full circle! Went from Panasonic to Sony over 6 years ago because Panasonic lacked full-frame and phase-detect AF. Now Panasonic's back to retake that space!

This is very exciting. I enjoy the L mount especially the lenses but have always dislike the contrast only auto focus. This is where I want the system to go and it makes me happy. I'm a Leica SL2 owner so I'm hoping this makes its way into the SL3 and SL3s cameras. I'm also wondering how the new phase detect works with Leica's lenses since they are slightly slower than Panasonic's in general.

The s5 ii looks incredible. I have a s5 and it's been perfect for me. Wish I had to money to not sweat the upgrade. the new EVF and IBIS are worthy reasons to upgrade alone.

I bought the GH4 when it was first released. Everyone was using it for TV shows, etc. and it was top then. After that, it seemed Sony took over so I'm happy to see Lumix back on game!

The cool thing about Panasonic cameras is that they don't need to cripple their entry level mirrorless cameras to protect the sales of their higher end cinema line, like Canon or Sony. The VariCam and EVA1 seem to slowly fade out without any successors so they can put their whole research into the Lumix line. I hope they put this AF system in a future MFT GH7! I love the smaller sensor size and with better AF and maybe an even lower pricepoint, this would be awesome.

Bought the Sony A7IV with some GM lenses a few weeks ago. I might regret after seeing this video :'). I still work with a Gh5 on a weekly base for shooting a- and b-roll footage. While it lacks autofocus, it still has features i would like to see on my sony camera and the body fits my hands well. I never really used autofocus since i started filming with DSLR back in 2009. But autofocus has changed the game for sure.

Sam, thanks for the great content. I'm going to move from a GH5 to an S5ii, is there any features that I might be loosing? I mostly shoot video, but do the odd product photograph / macro shoot... and I just don't how to check each feature to make sure I won't end up with a new camera that can't do something I could do with my old camera?

I would consider upgrading my old Canon M50 to Lumix S5II but I am solo content creator and I use wireless remote control all the time which Panasonic does not have! I know we can use mobile but it is not as handy an small remote control I could touch with my toes while using both hands to hold equipment I demonstrate!

Hey Sam, great video thank you. I want to upgrade from my ZV-E10 and want full frame. This looks like a perfect camera for me, I was looking at the fx30 but this looks way better for the price. I normally do indoor video with controlled lighting and B roll on product reviews. Occasionally I do outdoor shots. My question is, what do it all lens do you recommend for this Panasonic S5 Ii camera? I would only be able to afford one lens to start with.

Looks like it has great video features overall, but 4K60p being cropped is a bummer.

Sony still has an advantage with its large collection of first party and third party lens choices and the huge community of users. I hope manufacturers like Tamron start to make more lenses for the L mount.

I have a question, do you think the new autofocus is good enough to record an interview and not worry? And the other thing, do you think the 4K 60fps clipping could disappear with a future update? Rolling shutter is a problem for me. The reason I went with the Fujifilm X-H2S. That stacked sensor is clutch for video.

Sony A7iii was a gamer changer camera which led to bigger and better things for Sony. I see a similar pattern unfolding here with the S5ii. Sony and Canon better wake up. I've been shooting Sony and Canon for quite some time and switched to Fujifilm as the whole experience is so much better. I just ordered the S5 ii. A pro video camera at the current price points is insane.

Between the G9 w/ firmware v2.4 for full feature MFT, the GX9 for super pocketable MFT and this beast for full frame Panasonic pretty much has a damned near perfect trio.

Iam really impressed with lumix but being a sony fan boy i hope sony will come with some new bangers 😀

I got a chance to see the camera yesterday in the CEIF 2023 exhibition in India yes AF in S5ii is like AF in sony cameras in 2015 a lot of hunting Panasonic think customers are foolish you cannot be still hunting for focus or have focus breathing in 2023, but if you're looking to use manual focus n photography Panasonic is one of best our there

Any idea what the photo buffer size is? It's a spec curiously lacking from every bit of info I've found so far! 😅 I'm really curious to see how viable this would be for wildlife photography. Without a stacked sensor it might have too much distortion but I'd love to swap fully over to Panasonic.
