Stephan Weissman discusses the controversy that has swirled over alleged U.S. Government responsibility for the assassination of the former Belgian Congo's democratically elected Prime Minister.
@@robertdore9592 Not enough! We must get a member of King Leopold family for a public trial and sentence them to death. Just symbolic when compared to the hundred of thousands whose hands were cut off and or lost lives. Mobutu was late Bush's best friend until he no longer was useful and they sent Mobutu's brother in arms, Kabila, in exile to overthrow him. The French tried to keep him by sending mercenaries but they could not repel Kabila's thugs well equipped by the CIA. They again, later had him killed. It's amazing how they keep committing the same crime over and over till as of late Kabila's death. Just what is so precious for the USA in Zaire to keep murdering leaders with impunity for over 50 years!!! Who are the real beasts here? Talk about human devolution ....
A son cf Africa is being discussed without any of his sister's and brothers on the table! This is very disturbing especially when you consider that he was killed cause was against exploitation of Africa
You're right of course. But I think the coverage of the topic was more than adequate and the issuance of blame, such as it is, was damning enough. I don't disagree with you. But I think the lecture and discussion addresses your concern.
You and me as Africans should rather question ourselves for not discussing this on the continent and looking for solutions to counter it. We sit at home, feel comfortable using currencies like CFA(Colonie France Afrique) which is printed and managed by France fail to elect competent leaders and make noise when others talk about it. Respect to this man for exposing their own system how many of us expose the useless regimes in our various countries?
Forget CIA accountability- it will never happen. The presenter seems to go out of his way not to address the “why” of the story. Why was Lumumba killed? Didn’t it have 99% to do with the clash of Lumumba’s vision for the Congo as controlling its own economy with established American business interests in the region?
Your brothers have taught the West well. It was Africans who started the odious practice of selling their own to the Arabs and the West. Today, Africans continue to exploit their own.
Remember its not "all" the people of the west who are complicit in this sort of murder and corruption. Us small fry are treated the same way by our own criminals in charge, look at the mass convid genocide for example
What find interesting is there isn’t one person of African descent in that room expressing their opinion of the regime change policies of the USA government in this topic as well as others. The irony of that! Wow!
At first I was offended by the casual nature of suggesting the conversation continue over a glass of wine given the subject matter, but upon further reflection, maybe the conversation might be a little less guarded. On RU-vid there is a video of the CIA agent and Belgian officers being interviewed admitting to the murders and they felt no remorse. They go into detail about how the Congolese shot Lumumba and his 2 associates against trees above pre-dug holes. The Belgian officers explained that they had additional instructions to dismember their bodies and dissolve their body parts with the enormous amount of acid they brought with them, they had to do this without the Africans knowing about it. One Belgian officer laughs and brags about having stolen some of Lumumba's teeth as trophies. He went on to say how funny he finds Congolese people saying Lumumba might reappear one day because he'd be missing his front teeth. These are truly evil men and the fact that their government apologized means nothing, especially since so many years later, they had no empathy. I hate that they're making money writing about their participation in this. I think they see how much Lumumba is still beloved with movies and sustained interest and they wanted to "clout chase" to say "I killed someone important and I'm somebody because of that."
MALCOLM X TAUGHT THAT LUMUMBA WAS THE BEST OF THE PAN AFRICANIST LEADERS.... HE MENTIONED NKRUMAH AND NYERERE.... OF GHANA AND TANZANIA.... BUT HANDS DOWN LUMUMBA WAS THE BEST!!!! IMAGINE IF THESE TWO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO COLLABORATE ON LIBERATION FOR THIER PEOPLE IN AMERIKKKA AND THE CONGO!!! WHAT KIND OF WORLD WOULD WE HAVE TODAY????

They don't talk about the private multinational corporate motive, behind the C.I.A' and Belgian assisted coup of Lamumba. No real mention of the resources that stood to be lost from Lamumba nationalizing, and essentially reclaiming Congo's resources for themselves and not private interests. No real threat of the Congo becoming a Soviet proxy, just Neo-liberalism taking the place of Colonialism. Consequence is dire for the people, an oppressive dictatorship working with multinational mining interests and other extraction based multinationals, who refuse to use some or basically any of their profits selflessly, by giving back to the Congolese people with proper social institutions that they desperately need and deserve.
Their objective is not humanitarian it is driven by the profit motive. If Congo does not demand it will not get. We have to try to be a more practical people and we damn well better succeed or we will be removed from this earth!
Yes this talk is weak!!! That's why they have no African there because they would have been hard questions to answer. This talk is weak and we will continue fighting for justice over Lumumba
All this atrocities because of Natural resources and Lumumba and many other great leaders like him, continue to be killed. Would be polite to have an African at this meeting....anyway I forgot that once your are melanated your are disregarded. I wish Africa unites but as long we have Puppets running the continent, this will never happened.
The two things that African are fooled with are the international organization term and the foreign investment term , these two terms are made in favour of the west .
The tragedy is that all these years later and africa is still as vulnerable now as it was then. Just a couple of leaders seem to understand the urgency of the situation and one of them recently died. At some point one has to look at the Africans and ask why are you still so stagnant and living in the richest continent.
It's simple , Africa is still stagnant as you call it because of the dishonesty, greed ,wickedness, devilish intentions of few so called powerful nations . Using the media to paint bad image about Africa, lying to their kids historically about Africa, and so on. Interfering into the affairs of African nations. Empowering misleaders of Africa ( the sellouts I call them), against the enable leaders , distablising the continent for the interest of few . Slowly the truth is coming out and together as honest human beings we can overcome ✊🏿✊🏿, and we will overcome.
If he was aligned with the communist what is the problem? Wasn't his right to align with anyone? Does the governments do not have the right to ally with any country they want?
Fight between the US and USSR for congos' uranium in the race for nuclear weapons. Also, tribal warfare in the Congo and Lumumba was a nationalist caught in it.
USA didn’t want the USSR to gain access to the most uranium on earth and the Belgians didn’t want to lose control of a former colony and mobutu was given as opportunity that only the most steadfast of men could say no to. But what they didn’t plan on was after they die what would happen

Infact God is the answer. The first shall be last and last shall be first. I always says . @@setumomahakoe7791 I know of none. Above and beyond some disconnected intellectuals having such a discussion, I would rather see it as a part of a broader historical subject in schools. Africans generally know European history but not their own.
Now it the time of repentance and recognition of leadership change. Killing of not a solution and I believe that this massive massages goes outstanding.
Oh I understand now. The US with the CIA make Lumumba be overthrown, arrested, tortured and at that point they leave him at the hands of Mobutu and he was who murdered him hahaha. So it was Mobutu who killed him, even though the over throwers didn't do anything without the CIA's green light.
@Emilio Guifarro- Mobutu was used by them, and on their orders. And actually, unlike what this video says, way way before Lumumba's transfer, the CIA with the U.N. had agents under-cover on the ground in DR Congo prior to Lumumba's capture and during his murder of Lumumba. Those agents were part of every move that was happening in the country, with westerners mercenaries working along side the few local traitors westerners paid in the country, CIA U.N. etc...had to be there to give money and arms with Belgium, and were helping eliminate the many locals who were rising up and fighting back. Check the movie "Lumumba" by Raoul Peck as well as his documentary on the subject. Also, you will find many western whistle-blowers additional material on the internet backing up what I just explained. Don't even bother listening to the covering up this video is slowly but surely trying to establish to erase so much of the culpability. Senator Clinton knew exactly what happened by the way, she, her husband and many of her partners currently have stocks/shares in companies exploiting minerals of the Congo right now thru genocidal wars in the east Congo back with western mercenaries.

People forget President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt gave Lumumba’s widow and children a home and a stipend after his death despite his own personal dislike with communist leaders because he was Nasser was a great leader of principle and saw the assassination of lumumba as a grave injustice and crime against humanity.
CIA was on the ground with a clear mission to get rid of Lumumba. My CIA friend (now deceased) told me in detail about what they were doing there. He was a pilot and had nothing to do with the actual assassination.
Don't worry about that - how is it that next ''Africa conference will be in Africa : Topic : How England and USA relationship causes World conflict and the attendances will be Africans
Why are so many non-African people sitting and discussing about the assassination of an African leader, how many such meetings take place discussing what about Africa. Would be interesting to know the agendas of such meetings 🤔
And by fighting I mean everytime one shines a light he is taken down, the shooter aims and fire and he is assassinated we take some time again give the shooter opportunity to reload point aim and fire another one bite the dust, we know what the strategies are why can't Africans rise up not separated but utilizing strategies of basic defence.

Has anything changed at all in the Kongo and for Kongolese while Anglo-Saxons are still committing atrocities through their stooges Museveni (Uganda) and Kagame (Rwanda) ? When will be leaders be bold enough to establish an International Inquest on all Kongo Genocide or Atrocities ? Kongocide requires revisiting.
When we allow public policy and racial interest to yet suppressed an exploited country like Congo,It baffles where these policy makers and executors had placed religion and the law's. Was it forgotten this time that the exploited should be given the opportunity to repair things? Had History escaped them that we all grew out of the lineage one that Righteous NOAH?
The problem faced by Africa is that despite the language of democracy, rule of law, equality and many other concepts, Africa has been and still continues to be denied a voice on the negotiation table. For example, in the above video, there is no involvement of Lumumba's family, nor an African delegation. If an African leader or politician speaks out to challenge the powers that be, the wheels of regime change start rolling. Propaganda speech acts start to fly around in order to convince the public to support the next drastic decision taken. Lumumba was murdered, but his legacy lives on. The questions continue to be asked about what happened to him. Yet the legacy of his killers, the ones who hatched the idea does not and will never surpass his. He lives on among the African people, from generation to generation. His legacy continues to shape African history. The killings of African leaders and regime changes of the powerful, has been a western foreign policy practice and continues to be. Truth can not be hidden for ever, especially in this digitalised world.
This is so disturbing there are talking about the son of the soil but no African are present how disrespectful that is then admitting don’t mean a dam thing these Ppl are evil and we stand aside and do nothing . Long live lumumba

1) Congo was an artificial state, grouping tribes that often didn't like each within the same borders. Sometimes, these artificial borders cut right in the middle of the areas of some tribes. In 1885, that wasn't a big problem yet, in 1960 it was: there was a lot of rivalry between regionalists, who wanted to separate from Congo, while Lumumba wanted to keep everything together. This led to serious clashes between important Congolese political figures before Lumumba's killing 2) Lumumba's personality played a key role in his death. He wasn't only "dynamic", he couldn't resist provoking his political enemies, not treating them with the respect they thought they deserved. Not only his words, but also his whole body language was used in this process. His death certifcate was signed weeks before his official death 3) Let's remain intellectually honest for a while: Congo wasn't just another African country: except for cupper, gold and diamants, it was of crucial importance because of the deposits of uranium there. That fact alone, in the middle of the Cold War of course explains the line of action or inaction with regard to Lumumba. Condemning this today is too easy. Hindsight is always 20/20 vision. Of course, Western countries shouldn't be "proud" of that achievement, Lumumba still was a young guy (with a minor criminal offense) and it is always sad when there "have to be" victims to achieve certain political goals. But stakes were extremely high (I don't hear that explained sufficiently). And Lumumba being Lumumba, releasing him, or even not killing him but keeping him in jail would have led to continuous unrest, either by him or his followers. His death prevented that, and was also meant as a warning to other leaders. Today we look very differently to that era, and with other standards. But in the 1960's, Lumumba was not different than Mossadeq, than Arbenz in Guatemala. Business as usual for the CIA. And with that uranium in the back of my head, to a certain extend, I can follow that reasoning. Today it is easy to condemn, and political correctness imposes such condemnations, if you don't want to be branded crypto fascist. But folks, reality and the perception of that reality was VERY different in the 1960's. The lecture focusses on the relation CIA-Congolese and Belgians-Congolese, what about the relation Belgium-CIA ? Didn't Devlin also threw poisonous pills or something like that that came from Sydney Gottlieb into a river, not wanting to use them to kill Lumumba, or not being able to get close to him ? To everyone who's interested in this topic, you have to watch the fantastic movie simply called Lumumba about the assassination.
Hindsight is of course 20/20 but at any point in time, the atrocities brought upon the Congolese people should would & could be condemned. US loves to meddle in other countries affairs causing more harm than help
“Let’s remain intellectually honest” how about let’s remain morally honest, there is no justification for what the west did to the Congo. Sections of your essay is nothing but hurtful and disrespectful for the millions slaughtered by the Belgiums. Congo had a right to negotiate, trade or have political ties with whoever they wanted, they were a free state. The US, Belgium and the U.K. imposed their ideology on an African state because it failed to conform with foreign strategic policies. All African states have differing tribes Patrice wanted to bring those tribes together but was totally undermined by the west. He had a right to be provocative towards the hostile west, after all he had watched them murder and rape his people.
This is your movie, our reality. Lumumba is one, there is about 20 African leaders who have been taken out for the greed u seem to be justifying. Then we move to count the S. Americans and ....
@@markparker2893 U my friend is making the mistake of thinking the author of this essay sees the Congolese as people, even 3/5 humans, rather chess pieces. The "moral justifications": Lumumba's body language was wrong; his personality did not confirm; Congolese tribes hated each other; there were diamonds there and gold. The world is almost overtaken by immorality. The people who have robbed and exterminated humans whose names have disappeared, animals we do not know of, still continue to give themselves a justification for doing so. It is so refreshing, to find oneself not a member of this group. Wow!
